    a variety of sushi dishes
    Paula C.

Sushi 990 has always been an old favourite for Japanese food in the Port Coquitlam neighborhood! Everything is very very generously portioned and priced here which always makes it a great choice for families when you need to order lots and are around the area! In our recent visit we ordered the Salmon/Tuna/Ebi/Unagi Aburi Oishi Sushi + Prawn Tempura + Beef Yakisoba + Assorted Sashimi + Chopped Scallop/Toro Nigiri. Everything was very tasty and the chopped scallop nigiri is soo stacked scallop! A great choice when you are in the area!

Ordered from here for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised! We ordered a combo which basically had a half of 3+ of their special rolls. They were delicious and tasted fresh! We also each had an ebi snomono (fairly good - not the best I would say from the ones I've tried but would order again for sure) and the nigiri sushi combo which came with sockeye salmon and tuna. The only thing is that I found the rice a bit bland. I had to use quite a bit of soy sauce but, also might just be me! Overall, very great first impression through SkipTheDishes and would order again! Everything came to around $55 with tip and delivery which is great!

Cozy little sushi place in PoCo near Costco. Not a lot of restos in this area so this is definitely a good option. They have a lot of rolls and sushi selections but not for the hot food. They do not offer bento boxes as well. We got the seafood teriyaki, beef udon, sushi 990 oven baked roll and a bunch of nigiri sushi. The only thing that was more unique is the oven baked rolls. The others are just okay, nothing really special. Seafood teriyaki came with one prawn, squids, salmon pieces and 2 mussels on a bed of cabbage and bean sprouts. The squid was rubbery and the salmon pieces were too small and thin. Service was friendly. Orders came out fast and they kept refilling our teas. Parking is a pain so if you see an empty spot, go for it.

I honestly didn't expect such a hidden gem all the way here in Coquitlam. Their sushi rolls AMAZING. especially their California rolls and salmon rolls. Their baked special rolls are also a must try, it melts in your mouth like hot fudge. All in all, it's pretty damn good. Service was excellent. 12/10 would come again.

Dragon roll, negitoro roll, ikura, toro, ika and fruit garnish!!

Clean, little modern Japanese restaurant tucked away in the corner of a plaza. We sat beside a luscious green aquarium with a handful of fish swimming around. We arrived around 8 pm and the restaurant was nice and quiet. The servers greeted us warmly and took our order promptly. We ordered a dragon roll, Ika, ikura, toro nigiri, beef udon, negitoro roll and salmon and tuna combo. The food arrived pleasantly plated and garnished with strawberries, kale and a slice of lemon. Food: dragon roll was basically a California roll topped with unagi and sauce - dh thought it was a bit simple. Negitoro was actually tuna (not toro) and green onion, a little disappointed. All the other items were standard and fresh and nicely presented. Atmosphere: laid back and quite chill. Servers were friendly and responsive. Value: reasonably priced for a good portion of food.

    Dynamite roll!

My favourite place to get dynamite roll! It is $4.99 for 6 pieces and they are a very good size! They don't rip you off. The rice is just the right amount and it is filled with a lot of crab. This is the main thing I order here. Also the miso soup is just $1.00. I have also had the teriyaki chicken here. It is a good size and has the right taste. I keep coming here for the dynamite roll and I have seen the other maki rolls and they are also a good size. This is the only place I will go for dynamite roll! The place itself isn't very big they have two tables that are closed off and then 3+ tables that are more open. Their service is fast and the server is kind. I will coming back here a lot during my summer in Canada. :)

    The fish tank!

A great little place for family! We discovered this little gem about two months ago next to Orrange Kitchen + Bar, when our family wanted to eat and watch the UFC Fight - Orrange was "too busy" so we needed a "Plan B". The name and signage next door at Sushi 990 did little to encourage us to visit before, as we thought it was just another sushi place in Port Coquitlam. We were wrong. Don't judge a book by its yadda yadda! It's small inside, probably 4-5 groups can dine inside... so you're sure to get served relatively quickly, as there aren't a lot of other tables to take up your time. When you walk in, you'll notice the cute fish tank, "private area" to the right with full bench seating, and 2-3 tables on the left. These tables have a bench seat by the window and regular chairs on the other side. The big screen LCD is playing Japanese and Korean Youtube music, and the mood is right. It's a clean little restaurant and you can notice they do a good amount of take-out as well. The service is great. The place is small so you will most likely get the same staff helping you each time. The server is polite, attentive and nice. The kitchen staff bid you fareful in a fun and stereotypical "arigatou gozaimasu!"... you don't get that experience everywhere you go, so for odd family that comes in to a sushi place for the first time, it's something you talk about. I don't think it gets old. It's fun. Did I mention the food? Very good. Some very unique dishes - many cooked fusion sushi rolls which are sure to fill you up. They've got the usual sushi menu and new things to keep even the pickiest happy. They didn't have "natto" but I can forgive them for that. They also don't have Korean kimchi or Japanese curry rice, so they're really focused on what their name advertises... sushi. The price for many rolls is what you would expect... some inexpensive, some in the higher end. Their name, "990", is incorporate in their menu, where you'll notice many dishes that you would expect to code $10+ priced at $9.90. Their $20+ dishes at $19.90. You get the idea. Interesting that this price idea is right in their name... but again, who really cares about all that. The place is small, food is good, and you get service with a smile. One thing mention: don't be surprised if they give you a dish or two free, on the house! Very nice touch. I'm glad we found this place and have mentioned this place to many friends - some who have become regulars I recently found out. You should definitely give it a try.

Wow. Night and day from my previous visit. Order the same beef donburi and gyoza. Got chicken donburi with not even enough sauce to coat the chicken let alone the rice. Gyoza were cold. There are too many options in the area for me to even think about returning.

Teriyaki Combo from the $9.90 section, a regular Salmon Roll and a Miso Soup.
    Young L.

A nice cozy place in PoCo, Sushi 990 has nice food for its price. The servers were friendly, refilled my drinks before I even had to ask, and the restaurant has a nice comfortable atmosphere. They also play relaxing jazz music, which I personally always appreciate, but that's just me. That said, the materials used felt a little cheap, which was nevertheless expected for its price (hence the 4 stars). The rice in particular is a little starchy(?), and the rolls have too much rice compared to meat. The miso tastes standard (could've been served hotter), the gyoza feels pre-made. The salmon and tuna were both of average quality, but was filling nonetheless. The teriyaki and vegetables were probably the best; they tasted very freshly cooked. I would recommend ordering from the $9.90 section of the menu for the best value. I would definitely come here again.

A no-nonsense restaurant that has simple decorations, but really fresh food. Came on a weekday and had made a reservation, but it was quite quiet around dinner time. Isobe-Age (4/5) - $7.25 Taste: Never had an appy quite like this - raw tuna wrapped in tempura style seaweed. It was fresh, served warm, and the dashi broth that it was dipped in was delicious. The textures were complex, the fish was soft, while the seaweed was crunchy and somehow it worked. However, I'm not sure if I would have preferred this served as either a cold dish or a hot dish, but instead it was a bit of both? Portion Size: 4 pieces Deluxe assorted nigiri sushi (5/5) - $34.75 Taste: I would order this again in a heartbeat. They offer a wide selection of fish that is not served at most Japanese restaurants including shima-aji, homemade tamago, amaebi. I think the quality of the fish is extremely fresh and comparable to omakase spots in Vancouver. The tamago was especially delicious and I don't even typically prefer tamago. Portion Size: Good portion for 1 person [Value for Money] While it's quite far away from the city, I can vouch for the drive out. It's worth it to try this restaurant for the quality of its fish. Perhaps omakase you can get elsewhere, but the deluxe assorted sushi itself was WELL worth its price.

An absolute A+ to Chef Keith and Chika for their mastery of perfecting a great omakase experience in the tricities. They are reservations only (and for a good reason!) and this can be done on their new online portal!! by controlling the number of seatings, Chef K and Chika are able to interact and share their craft with patrons in an intimate and personal way. There is no hustle and bustle or fakeness that would otherwise follow some restaurant vibes. There is purely passion for fish, customer service and, of course, metal music! I urge you to dine at the chefs bar and let Chef K tell you his extensive and wonderful background from catering some A list bands, to being on tour, and changing restaurant models all while being fed an amazing feast. The fish is sourced from Japan and screams quality and flavour. He knows exactly what he's doing with all the fish profiles and pairing them with a variety of notes like shiso, yuzu and ginger. Between the 14 unbelievably mouth watering and satisfying dishes, Chef K and Chika's kindness shared the spotlight easily.
