In the past 20 years they have been at different locations around Metro Vancouver, but I happened to visit 2 years ago and have returned for a seasonal favourite. My last review of Take Sushi's Bento boxes was over 4 years ago on October 28, 2021. I have been back several times and haven't gotten around to post a follow up review. The Bento boxes are just as outstanding. Good quantity and great quality food. The chicken pieces in the Teriyaki chicken bento box are of substantial size and flavorful. The price as gone up to $16.99 for the Chicken Bento box, but in comparison, it is an excellent deal especially at dinner time when other places charge 20 bucks or more. read more

This place is filled with nostalgia, as I've grown up coming here for 10+ years . So far, it's been a favorite for my Japanese bento box cravings. It's a small restaurant that roots in a family business, which has been the same since I was in high school. Parking is not the easiest, since it doesn't have its own, but there's a parking lot behind the plaza. The shop, when you enter, has a calming and home-like feel to it. The server is usually welcoming (if she's not busy crunching numbers), however, the menu is considerably larger than average, packed with many options for just a double sided sheet. What I've always gotten and loved from this place was its chicken teriyaki box. I just think the quality and love put into making it is evident. The crust of the chicken has a crunch with non alike. The chicken itself gives a burst of juicy goodness. The salad is fresh, crunchy and punchy with the tanginess of the puree. The BC roll I get with the combo is also to die for. Most other places, the salmon skin is dry, and bland, when compared to theirs, is soft and satisfying texturally. Overall, I'd heavily recommend the chicken teriyaki box. I've yet to try the other menu items, but as for my favorite, it'll be a long-standing option for my chicken bento needs! read more

Have you tried eating Aburi Engawa? I've never heard of this fish until I ate dinner at Take Sushi on Hastings Street. If you've never tried it, you NEED to now. The aburi sear and pinch of sea salt on top just blows my mind. It has a buttery texture that melts in your mouth. They serve sashimi engawa but today we had it as a nigiri on top of seaweed and ate it like a hand held wrap. I prefer aburi sashimi because I could taste the freshness of the engawa fish more and also don't forget to add that pinch of sea salt on top. read more

Food was surprisingly very fresh and very important for Japanese food. Good fast service and she was very attentive. I fist had issues coming here as when I looked at Yelp and their website, the menu presented was 9 yrs old. Anyone with such a menu could not have fresh food. We got take out from here and would say that the food is okay. For the main part of our dinner, we got the salmon teriyaki box and the chirashi don. The sashimi in the chirashi don could have been a bit more fresh, and we also wished there was a cutout in the box for the salmon teriyaki as by the time we got home (40 minutes or so), the tempura was a bit soggy. For rolls, we got take roll, deep fried scallop roll, and the saba battera. I would have to say the take roll was my favourite and the saba battera was a bit pricey for what it was worth. Wow, it has been more than 3 years since I have been back here! OMG This place is still alive and still busy after the pandemic. Yes, this place is categorized as budget sushi, that is not that bad. I mean with Sushi Garden hiking their prices to the sky now, I think this place is A LOT more worth it now and on top of that, in my neighbourhood. The quality of the cooked food is one of the best though tbh. Their deep fried chicken (karage) and their tempura were on point. On top of that, their sushi rolls were decently priced too. The price were cheap for post pandemic, and on top of that they are a local business that has been there for YEARS! Yes, it is owned by a Chinese guy and a family, but at the same time it has been a part of the Burnaby Heights community for years and it is not that bad of a restaurant located here. Decided to try this place out and ordered some rolls for takeout. I liked how they don't use too much rice on the rolls and there is a substantial amount of fish/filling. Chopped scallop roll and the hamachi nigiri was just okay for me. It didn't taste as fresh as some of the other rolls. But the negitoro and aburi salmon nigiri was tasty. The maguro shooter was interesting, but probably something I won't get again. I got it as a cone and had no idea what to expect. Essentially it was tuna mixed with spicy sauce into almost a fish paste texture with some yellow tobiko sprinkled on top. I did appreciate how much filling there was in the cone. For everyone that gave 4+ stars, I am giving you the side eye. Tf you thinking. I am judging this based on a take out experience so maybe dine in might be better. Regardless, don't take out from here... The rice... so sad. So hard. Felt like someone is punishing me to eat it. The yakiudon was just littered with bean sprouts. At least make the sprouts tasty... there was no effort in preparing any of the food. The nigiri was falling apart like Brittany. The rolls were smothered with sesame for some reason... it may look haute with the added color but I don't want to floss after to get these seeds out. Everything was mush with specks of salmon and tuna. But I still ate it all... don't judge. Everything fell flat. If you want budget sushi then go to sushi garden. read more

3.5/5, +.5 for service First, I'm gonna begin to say this is not an authentic sushi restaurant; it's run by Chinese people. However, don't let that scare you away because the sushi is still top quality given the price factor. A Yelp search brought me to this restaurant after spending the sunset at Burnaby Mountain. After my experience in Miku, I wanted something on the opposite side of the spectrum: cheap, fill you up. Lone and behold this place came up, and it wasn't too far from where I was. We arrived at around 8:30pm, and the place was about half full. Eventually we were the last customers to leave. In fact, the owner decided to chat with us, seeing we were from Toronto visiting Vancouver. We ordered the take sashimi combo, tuna aburi oshi sushi (today's special), and prawn sashimi (also today's special). The prawn sashimi also came with prawn heads in which when we finish, the owner would fry the prawn heads so that we can eat those too. The take sashimi combo had quite a decent variety. The tuna sashimi, in particular, were extremely thick. I personally like it thick, but not sure what other customers would think of that. Otherwise the fish was really fresh for a $$ restaurant. The tuna aburi oshi sushi was also well done; I wish we had good aburi oshi sushi in Toronto! Finally, the prawn sashimi was very unique; it's nowhere close to that ebi feel, it's actually prawn. The fried prawn heads weren't really fully fried, as I still felt a lot of shell while eating them. I personally could've done it without anyway. Service was excellent, and I mentioned already how the owner decided to chat with us about our visit to Vancouver. He really appreciated us stopping by, as this place really isn't frequented by tourists due to its far location from downtown. read more

This restaurant has been in the Burnaby neighborhood for a while and I'm surprised i haven't tried it till now. The restaurant was relativity quiet for a Wednesday night where there were only two tables seated with customer and a few orders of takeouts. But I was pleasantly surprised by the quick service and the food. They were very quick to fill our tea, take our orders and serve our dishes. I ordered the tuna and salmon sashimi, sushi special and teriyaki combo to share with my husband. Overall, our favourite was the tempera in the combo. It was a lot lighter and crispier than a lot of the other japanese restaurants we tried - probably because the oil they use to fry is relatively fresh. The sashimi and nigiri in the special were pretty standard. Overall a pretty decent alternative to your typical go to Japanese restaurants like sushi town and sushi garden minus the crowd. read more

Take Sushi was a fantastic dining experience! My friends and I had just come from a hike and were cold and craving seafood. We happened upon this cozy sushi restaurant that greeted us with immediate seating, hot tea, and a table next to the heater (which greatly pleased me). All the rolls and fish were fresh and had amazing texture and quality, and their prices were very affordable. They had really unique rolls, for example the sunshine roll that combined mango and smoked salmon. Service was also friendly and attentive - both the waitress and owner chatted with us and really made us feel welcome! I would highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

4.5*? Fairly unassuming neighbourhood sushi joint! (Please do not equate a 4* Toronto vs. a 4* Vancouver because honestly, there's just no comparisons!) Food did take a while to roll out, but what arrived to the table was absolutely delicious! Highlights include mango tuna salad and Mermaid Roll. Ate a bit more than comfortable, but only ended up spending ~$25pp which included at least 2 things off the Daily Specials menu, i.e. catch of the day (uni and oysters). Tea seemed to be poured at beginning of seating, then after most people cleared up after the opening rush. Apparently this place gets busy so try to come early to ensure a seat! read more

I've been a huge sushi lover since I was a kid. I've literally been to almost a dozen different sushi joints and out of all of them, take sushi isn't my favorite. I mean this place is not so bad but it's not so great either. I came with my family in-laws for the 2nd time in a row.. But, it took them too long to serve our food. They literally took over an hour just to serve my brother in law's his sushi cones. Granted, when we were there, they're getting busier but seriously, some of the people who had arrived after us actually got their orders before his damn cones arrived. So I don't really see how it would take them that long just to serve his damn sushi cones. Although despite how their food is not that bad because I had much worse then theirs, but it's just that it their fish doesn't have real freshness taste and smell to it. Like if it had been sitting in the freezer at least a few days longer than it should've been. So most of the tastes that the sushi should've had was completely gone. This place isn't a terrible place to visit but out of all the places to go to, I would not recommend this place at first if you want good sushi. Consider going to Samurai Sushi beside Oakridge Mall or somewhere else with a good fresh sushi reputation before coming here. Lastly, I dislike how the changes on their menu. I was here last year with my mother and our in laws to celebrate mother's day and I ordered a deluxe combo. But then I came back here again on mother's day this year and ~"surprise surprise"~, they changed their deluxe combo slightly and not for the better, in fact, it's much worse. The sushi in the deluxe combo wasn't as good and the value of the combo went down while the price went up. read more

My favourite sushi place in North Burnaby. Everyone that we brought here loves it as well. From basic sushi rolls to the more unique rolls (such as the take roll or mermaid roll) to the udon in soup to their teriyaki dishes, everything tastes great! The head chef and owner is very nice as well. If you ask him what's fresh, he will tell you what he got in that day. We've never been disappointed by his recommendations. We are on the adventurous side; however, the chef tailors to not-so-adventurous individuals as well. Fresh seafood. Great and friendly service. Clean restaurant and dishes. Got take out for dinner. (Covid). Tried 5 different rolls... spider, bc, deep fried scallop, spicy tuna and dynamite. Everything was ok. Nothing great but nothing horrible. Just your average middle of the road sushi. I was happy that the bc roll was made correctly (with grilled salmon skin instead of just using chunks of cooked salmon the way some restaurants make it nowadays). read more

Been going to this place for years since the current owner took over. Everything is delicious from the donburi to the sashimi. The service is always efficient, the waitresses scury around tending to all the tables. Take Sushi is great for every size of party. My favourite dish is Teriyaki Chicken Donburi. I always ask for extra teriyaki sauce so I can drown my rice in sticky goodness. It's simple with just chicken with the skin on,rice and teriyaki sauce. Add a small green salad or a veggie roll and you've got yourself a well rounded meal. You'll pretty much always find the owner behind the sushi bar along side the sushi chefs or in the kitchen working hard. He'll even help fill a glass or two with water if needed. Its always a good sign when the owner works as hard as his staff. :) read more

This sushi place is a hidden gem in the large city of Vancouver. Not only is the fish very fresh, but the specialty rolls are unique and full of flavor. Some of my favorites from the resturaunt include the sunshine roll ( tempura, smoked salmon, basil, and mango) as well as the unagi roll. Other delicious menu items were the spareribs, grilled shrimp, and calamari salad. The service was great and would definately come back anytime I'm in the area. read more

The service could have been better.. they forgot 2 of my items and didn't come check on us at all, I had to flag someone each time I needed something. Take Sushi is a bit of a plain-Jane in the looks department, but it offers good value - plenty o' food for a little money. I rolled in with a friend for a late lunch at the halfway point of a bike ride around Burnaby, and we were hungry and craving sushi. We both ordered lunch box specials, of which there are several to choose from, most under $10. My nigiri sushi box ($9.25) included salad and miso soup; salmon, tuna, kani (crab) and tamago (egg) nigiri; and five pieces of assorted tempura. The sushi was fresh well-presented and satisfying. (I'm starting to find it tough to say new things about sushi when there's so much of it out there. It's either good or it's bad - and Take's was good!) The tempura was great - neither too greasy nor too dry - and I loved that they included shrimp with the lunch box special. Like I said, we were super-hungry when we came in the door, and when I got back on the bike my tummy was more than a little full. Take Sushi is definitely one of the better sushi places to go to in Burnaby Heights. While everything you eat is good, I want to point out the Tuna & Mango in particular. Unique and wonderful. I'm drooling writing about it. In addition, my husband & I agree that the Chicken Teriyaki is the best we've ever had. The crispy skin, the thickness of the sauce, the toasted sesame seeds. Mmmmmm.... The sushi is, as expected, always fresh and delicious. No skinny tasteless or frozen pieces of salmon sashimi to be found here. I find it on par or better than Sushi Garden (about five mins drive away at Lougheed & Madison). Even better than Sushi Garden, the wait time non-existent whereas there's too many people at Sushi Garden. The staff is friendly. We're always greeted immediately as soon as we step through the door. It's a small thing for a restaurant to do but always appreciated (and always noticed when it doesn't happen). Definitely our go-to place when we're craving Japanese food. read more

As I regularly visit this neighbourhood I have been meaning to try out TAKE Sushi. So on a Saturday morning, I visited with my family soon after they open at 11:30am. We were greeted warmly with a smile and they sat us quickly. Their menu is actually quite large but their lunch specials were quite a draw because of its good value. We ordered a lunch combo (salad, miso soup, rice, teriyaki chicken/beef and a choice or California, BC roll, or Yam tempura roll), a chicken udon, a tempura udon, and a yakisoba. The decor at TAKE is dated, nothing to brag about. It's clean overall but the place doesn't seem like its been renovated for years - the restaurant just feels tired and old. The food arrived a little slower than I would have liked, especially since we were the first table there so there was no excuse for the food coming out slow because there were numerous orders. The lunch box arrived first and the food looked good and tasted fine. The udon noodles arrived next and was a bit of a let down. The noodles seemed like the kind you would get in little packets for 50 cents each at the supermarket and the broth was fairly flavourless. The tempura was greasy and the coating was not flaky like some other places we've tried. The yakisoba arrived next sizzling. There was a lot of noodles piled high. The flavour again was a little lacking. Overall I would say TAKE Sushi is just ok. I would probably give some neighbouring restaurants a try. Actually Sushi Town up the hill is one of my favourite sushi places in the neighbourhood. Kid Friendly. read more

First I'all like to talk about service: We were 6 people and when we arrived the table had 5 chair and we are 6. So, I said to lady we are 6 and she responded a Ok! Then it's same again, she brings us five plates and stick. While my brother going to washroom because Don't Have Chair. Later I said excuse the chair please, and she put me angry face. I don't understand. what's problem? And I already said twice and she forget it. FINALLY she brings chair. And when she serves us cup tea, she strip us the cup and the table have tea and she does not clean. So, we had clean us with napkin. But Honestly. I won't get tip, because service was horrible. Then my friends say give 10%. And We decide that we never return, incidentally they are Chinese people *(but I went to other Sushi's Restaurant for Chinese people was good service. This place was really good. Actually I would give it 4.5 stars. But I really like they didn't put too much rice on their california rolls. The spicy tuna was okay, but they put a korean paste style spicy sauce on it. I would have preferred a more liquidy sauce on my spicy tuna. But that's just me. I really liked the ebi sunomono. It was very fresh and tasty. However, I can't compare it to anywhere else because I don't usually order it. But i might now. Okay so I didn't realize I still haven't written a review for Take Sushi. I've been coming to eat here since the store opened and I've always left happy. My review may be a little biased because the owner of the store is a family friend and so whenever we go out to eat for Japanese, it'll probably be here. The owner is a young man by the name of Jason and it is a family run business. They have your typical sushi (dynamite, california, yam, etc), as well as udons, teriyakis, tempuras, miso, and so on. Their tempuras are delicious (the mom makes it in the back) and do not have that nasty greasy feeling to it at all. They always get us to try appetizers (the green seaweed salad, delicious, not really sour like some places). The miso isn't bad either. My favourites (before I turned vegetarian) is this tuna dish and their calamari salad. The tuna dish is a large piece of tuna, that's been half cooked. So the outside of the fish is cooked, but inside is still raw and the entire dish is half submerged in this sauce. I really really enjoyed that. Also, the calamari salad has a really great mixture of greens that seriously compliment each other with a tasty dressing. They also have a lot of special house rolls (I don't even remember the names of), but they are all freshly made, some are very colourful, with a drizzle of sauce on top. All the sushi is at a decent size and the rice is consistently good. Like I said, cause we are close friends with the owner, service is fine. But I do notice that the other new waitresses they employ are not always very friendly. The owner himself is very nice and likes to talk to customers and get to know them though. This sushi joint does do a lot of take outs, so be prepared to see people waft in and out often. But totally go try their special house rolls, calamari salad, and the tuna dish. read more

Delicious lunch special bento boxes, super fresh sashimi and the sizzling pan-fried udon noodles are always staples at my table. I've been going to take sushi for the last 5 years. I used to live 10 minutes away. Now I drive from downtown to get there whenever I want to enjoy a Japanese dinner. Chicken teriyaki is amazing with tons of flavor and vegetables. The portion is just huge. Sushi is always fresh and prepared properly. I would recommend especially the kiwi roll and maguro shooter, for you cannot find them elsewhere. Kiwi roll is sweet with a tang and the maguro shooter is an amazing spicy tuna nigiri. Sashimis are also served properly with thick slices of tasty properly thawed fish. I lived in Japan and always hesitate to eat at non Japanese owned sushi restaurants. Jason and his family are serving better sushi than a lot of the Japanese owned restaurants. This place may not impress you with its decoration, but the food is always good.
