Omakase Sushi for 1 ~ first time
    Amanda J.

Spontaneous decision to take myself out on a solo foodie adventure. I decided to dress cute casual and experience my first omakese outing. I'm so glad i chose Toyo. Not only is it nearby my place but it genuinely was such a spectacular place to eat out at. The ambiance was elegant, very clean and i loved the classy music to go with the omakese experience. I could definitely taste quality and freshness in every bite. Not going to lie though, i didn't catch each name of the omakese sushi, i was just so taken away and impressed with the presentation that i couldn't wait to devour the food. I'm definitely coming back for another omakese rotation. The service is top notch, they take credit card/ debit etc. Parking is on the side street. I have heard that they do get busier on Friday/Saturdays. Keep in mind only open for dinner Tues-Sat and their closed on Sunday/Monday. Good thing is this place takes reservations! What should i try next on their menu? By the way they have a wide range of items on their menu so if you don't feel like having an omakese experjnce don't worry. They have smaller items that are budget friendly!

Love this authentic Japanese restaurant. Everything is fresh and delicious. I always get the omakase sashimi where they take the shrimp shells and deep fry it, too. Be sure to make reservations before going as they tend to get quite busy even on weeknights!

High quality authentic Japanese sushi place in Burnaby Heights. Parking is available in front on Hastings, as well as on the side streets. The place is pretty small. There might've been 20 seats at most. The quality is there, but wow the pricing is up there. Also the nigiri is bite sized. Buddy and I left hungry. I guess this is the stuff that people would see on food shows. The sashimi platter came with 2 prawn heads. They asked if I wanted them deep fried (ie turned into tempura) after serving them. I wasn't sure what to do with them, but apparently they can be eaten once this happens. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Nice and fluffy. Just had to not think about what I was actually eating. Worth checking out if one is a sushi connoisseur, but be prepared to spend quite a few bucks more.

WOW! A very small Japanese restaurant that has some of the fishes flown in from Japan. Fishes such as the Bluefin tuna. The sushi chef are Japanese, so you can't get any authentic than that. Warning- the prices are a tad high but the quality is top notch! We ordered the Ika butter (whole grilled squid with garlic soy butter), so yummy - fantastic! The leftover sauce was used in my udon & some leftover rice - Heaven! Okra tempura- very good, batter was very light yet kept the okra very crispy, they served with a small plate of dipping salt. Okra was not slimy! My hubby said it taste better without the dipping salt. I kinda like the dipping salt, found that it accentuates the taste. We had the beef tataki( thinly sliced beef seared sashimi in ponzu sauce) very nicely done & tasted good. We had an assortment of sushi - fresh & good. Chirashi- big pieces of sashimi... they did not skim in the portion of raw fishes, the salmon was so red that it had to be sockeye. Had the house udon - fresh & good with lightly battered shrimp tempura. The abalone sashimi was pretty expensive, however it was very fresh & good - thoroughly enjoyed by my hubby & son. The hubby & kids had the handroll bluefin tuna belly & uni - they loved it... very very fresh. We then ordered 4 pieces of the bluefin tuna belly (otoro) The most expensive item of it all - the marbling of the tuna belly was a sight to behold. It was smooth & creamy, taste like butter. It had a very nice after taste to it. We throughly enjoyed the meal, needless to say. Parking available in the street - Proper Covid check, the restaurant is small... reservation highly recommended.

A must try if you love Blue Fin tuna! Their menu is authentic Japanese style so you won't get a variety of sushi rolls or combos here The servers try to explain their menu and dishes The use a dry erase board to show all the fresh seafood arrived from Japan The Toro and Chu Toro tuna were my favorite, so these are a must try! Each piece of nigiri ranges from $4-12 each. Depending on what you want, might as well get the Omakase (10-14 PC) sushi I wasn't a fan of the aburi, the sockeye salmon wasn't a good choice for this. I wish there was more sauce on the aburi The Tsukune was small meat patties with shiso The udon was a good price and the prawn tempura was freshly fried You can easily spend $50 per person here but the fish is very fresh Lots of free street parking too #lovetuna

Unassuming from the outside and the inside is kept a very simple but calming design. One, maybe strange, thing I really appreciated was that their AC was on just right- at most restaurants I find they blast the AC particularly during the heatwave, but I usually get too cold once I've settled down, but not here! We found we were all kept at a really nice cooled temperature. Moving onto the food, I got the house udon, paired with the black cod and oh my goodness, the broth had such a strong Unami flavor with a hint of sweetness, and the egg was poached to perfection. I will say I wish they had given a sauce for the ebi tempura, I tried using the broth but I personally felt the sublet flavor of the soup paired well with the udon but not as a dipping condiment. As for the black cod, while the portion was smaller than I imagined, every bite was cooked to perfection; notes of bbq filled each bite while the actual fish itself was juicy and buoyant. My buddies got the donburi; while the portions were a bit smaller, the same sentiments I echo above were reproduced by them. The sushi was fresh and flavourful, rice was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I usually do not enjoy tuna, as I find most has a bit of a lingering aftertaste but not this one! The bite I took had a prominent tuna flavor without being overbearing. Even though we were sat at the bar (place only has ~5 four person tables), service was really good however I would probably make a reservation the next time I come. The R5 is a 4/5 min stop away so very easily accessible and there is plenty of street parking available.

We came here for some sashimi on a weekday evening and were thoroughly impressed. We debated getting their omakase but in the end decided against it as we weren't super duper hungry. We ended up getting their three kinds sashimi which was very fresh. The only complaint I had was one of their pieces of salmon had a muscle fiber or something in it which made one section of it a bit tough but otherwise was delicious. I was a big fan of their aburi saba oshi which had the perfect blend of flavours. I felt the ebi smoke salmon oshi was a bit dry and didn't have enough flavor although they did not skip on the fish at all. However definitely the highlight was the pieces of sushi - hotate and ikura which just means that we need to come back for their omakase!

Came by for a simple birthday dinner. I ordered a selection of nigiri plus one of the daily specials, miso saba. Service is friendly and efficient. The food was? Delicious, though the standouts were the toro, amaebi (comes with a deep fried shrimp head), miso saba and uni. I didn't spring for the imported one but the local uni was still excellent. Sweet, creamy, briny goodness. And for $6, the miso saba was excellent value. I was expecting just a single piece of nigiri but it turned out to be a big slab of fish swimming in a lovely umami miso sauce. No complaints here! Will definitely come back again sometime.

I was just at Toyo sushi today and I have the urge to write this review right away. First of all, please disregard the 1 star review on this restaurant. The restaurant was closed for 18 months, of course they weren't opened. Please always do your research before leaving such an irresponsible review. I was looking online for an authentic Japanese restaurant in Burnaby. Many sushi places came up and Toyo Sushi caught my eye. There isn't much info on this restaurant, and their website wasn't even up yet. But I decided to give this place a try, and so very glad that I did. I made a reservation for 2 and were seated at the sushi counter. I noticed immediately how beautiful the counter space is, chef later told me that it's made of bamboo. The experience at the counter gave me an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant feeling. I felt that I had made a trip to Tokyo. We ordered the assorted sashimi, assorted sushi, anago nigiri, unagi nigiri, hotate nigiri, ikura and ika, and assorted tempura. All were very fresh, well made and skillfully prepared. The presentation was beautiful. Masa San was very meticulous and thoughtful, and it was shown through his preparation for our meal. We felt very well taken care by the chef and the waitress. We had two raw shrimp heads from the assorted sashimi which we didn't know how to enjoy them. We asked the waitress and Masa san, which he offered right away to deep fried them for us, and turned out to be super delicious. Again, his level of thoughtfulness and personable service excel any Japanese restaurants there are in metro Vancouver. Unagi nigiri was also the best I have had. Fatty and juicy. All of them are very good. Masa was also very generous, offered us sake and amintsu (Japanese dessert). The price is very reasonable, for an experience like this, to have such a skillful chef, providing authentic sushi experience, together with great customer service, excellent ambience and atmosphere (at the counter), this place is a true hidden gem! Housekeeping stuff: They are opened in the evening only Free street parking Credit card okay Counter seat recommended for an authentic experience They serve blue fin tuna (which I didn't order)

    Crunchy mackerel

My personal favorite .. Battera Unique touch with omakase sashimi : -they fried the mackerel bone once you are done with the sashimi...crunchy crunchy AND -generous portion of UNI generous size as well.

Perhaps one of the most disappointing sushi joints we have been to in the lower mainland. The menu is very limited and prices are around $5 more than other places in the area. Their explanation: "it's a Japanese restaurant." I thought we were having Italian! I have been to more authentic restaurants in the lower mainland and I think they had a more impressive menu with a better quality food; Ajisai, Toshi and Momiji to name a few. Maybe Saturday evening is not the right time. One chef, one kitchen staff and one waitress who brought blank menus twice! Just to be fair though, the seafood was fresh, nigiri sushis fell apart easily and the chicken Karaage was undercooked. I also felt cheated when we were charged $20 for salmon oshi when it says $15 on the menu. I mean if you're here you might as well go to 101 other sushi places on E. Hastings but if you end up here because you see have given it 5 starts, don't get disappointed like me.

This a quaint sushi restaurant just west of McDonald. If you are looking for authentic Japanese cuisine this would be the place to go. If you are looking for cali rolls or anything westernized you will not find it here. Unfortunately my gfs and I don't eat raw foods so we were not able to order any rolls. The ladies who did order it seemed to enjoyed their orders and their presentation was nice. I ended up getting the ebi tempura Udon noodle bowl, assorted tempura and adegashi tofu. The tempura is lightly battered and a good portion to share. The service was prompt and the staff were friendly. It is a nice place to come in small groups. We did not venture to the back of the restaurants so I'm not sure if they have group seating.

We took awhile to look so we were asked at once point if we were ready and we sis we needed a bit more time so the server was delightfully accommodating and said whenever we were ready to give a server a call. Later on when we were ready our order was taken by a male staff member. We ordered a decent amount. Miso cheese eggplant, chawan-mushi, fried fish collar served in some kind of broth, 8pc nigiri omakase, blue fin tuna&uni hand cone, another hand cone but I can't remember what was in it..wifey ordered it, vegetable tempura and a black truffle dynamite roll. The highlight for me was the black truffle dynamite roll, it's taste was perfect. The right amount of truffle used and not over powering like I've had at so many other venues. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted. It was smokey, earthy and tasted wonderful. The miso cheese eggplant was delicious, slightly salty from the miso and wonderfully roasted soft eggplant. The fish colar in broth was light and delicate, beautiful flavor and texture. Chawanmushi was soft and delicate, excellently flavored. The omakase which had fish from Japan was delicious, super fresh and masterfully prepared! The tempura came with a green tea seasalt which was different but very nice. For dessert we had the green tea tiramisu which was very tasty. The restaurant itself is small but cozy and wonderfully decorated. My wife and I had a wonderful meal and I would go back for special occasions.

We sat in a separate section of the restaurant with 3 tables at the front. We ordered chicken wings, assorted tempura, miso black cod and an order of beef teriyaki that was not on the menu. The servings are very small for the prices charged. We found that the chicken wings (only 4 small wings) $9.50 were a bit dry. The tempura batter was not as crisp or crunchy as we've had. The miso black cod was a very small portion - maybe 4 oz. for $18.00. We did not feel that there was value for the money. The food was average and the prices were too high for the quality and amount of food received. We did not enjoy the anime that was playing and we were glad that we were not sitting in the main dining room. Overall, we feel that there are better options for a Japanese meal.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays).
