Visiting this Japanese sushi restaurant on a sunny day during Sakura season was truly magical. From the moment you step inside, you feel transported straight to Japan. The atmosphere, both inside and out, captures the spirit of a real Japanese neighborhood - charming, peaceful, and authentic. This family-run restaurant is lovely and cozy, with a warm, welcoming vibe. The owners are incredibly polite and friendly, making the experience even more special. And the food? Absolutely top-notch. Every bite tasted fresh, carefully prepared, and full of flavor. If you're looking to experience a little slice of Japan without the cost of international travel, this is the place. A perfect spot for a relaxing, memorable meal, highly recommend!

Since Yelp doesn't do half stars, I must clarify that I would give this place a 3.5 stars out of 5. I've seen this place time and time again on Instagram but never could bite down on the long drive over from Richmond. However, I happened to be in the area this time and was finally able to try this quaint little sushi shop. As mentioned, it is run by an elderly Japanese couple with limited English. Reservations are highly preferred due to limited seating and even if it is seemingly empty, the grandpa behind the counter may wave you off with his hand (as I had witnessed first hand) at his discretion. Someone else in the reviews mentioned liking the rice and I agree on this one! I liked the temperature and softness of the rice and it paired very nicely with all the nigiri. The fish I would say is not top notch but still good quality. I am quite sensitive to the taste of fishiness (yes I know it's funny to say that about....well literal fish) and can be picky with fish but everything was good. For the price, this is good sushi I would say. The power went out halfway through eating which was kinda funny but they handled it just fine and dinner went on with no hitch. Overall, I would say this place is a nice little nook and cranny to check out if you're in the area but I'm not sure if I would specifically trek out from Richmond for it. For the low price, you can expect decent food but there won't be much service or ambiance with it.

Don't let this plain looking mom-n-pop shop fool you from having some great sushi. At $40/pp for an Omakase, you really can't complain. The service can be slow at times, but adds to the charm of the place. As you sit watching the chef slice through hunks of fish, your mouth just waters as you enviously watch others have their fill before the chef finally gets to you. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and interacting with Toshi-san. Though his English may not be the best, his genuine intentions are well communicated through sign language, and of course his sushi. Definitely recommend getting the Omakase. Worth every penny. Do have to say that you will leave smelling a little fishy. Perhaps why I couldn't give a higher rating, still a very honest and modest spot for a decent Omakase experience!

Tried the $35 omakase at Matsuzushi and unfortunately wasn't a big fan. The set came with miso soup and 10 pieces of nirgiri plus a temaki cone. For the price paid, it was not very filling and I feel like you could get better omakase for $35 at other places. I would only recommend coming here for their regular sushi. It's also a really small shop just run by your local grandma and grandpa

Talk about the bang for the buck! It was so hard to make a reservation for this place and I just kept trying and finally got through, so worth it and I'm so glad I was able to take my friends to their first omakase experience even if it was a little untraditional where they aren't making it in front of you. Because we had such a large party, we weren't able to be seated at the bar with the chef, it was a party of 5. Which is understandable because it is a really small mom and pop shop. Because it was family owned the service was a bit slow for all the heavy traffic they were getting but luckily we weren't hangry or in a rush so it was fine at the time at the rate it was going since it was only the chef working as quickly as he can. I def recommend if you want to have a fun experience and to chill with your friends. Again BANG FOR THE BUCK!

I came on a weekday around dinner time and this cute little sushi restaurant wasn't too busy. There were still a couple of tables left. I ordered the deluxe 8 piece nigiri set with 3 pieces of California roll ($25). I was surprised that I found a bone in one of the fish. The owner saw this but didn't say anything. Instead he gifted a small marinated dish. I'm not sure if everyone receives this but I was thankful.

Food is fine. I m not sure if I will go back again. Please don't come here if you are in a hurry. This place is run by grandpa/grandma. I placed an order for three sashimi appetizer, salon, Toro, hamachi, tempura, plus three rolls: california, unagi, spider roll. Also have hamachi karma, baked black cod. They delivered an abi-roll instead of California roll and they missed my tempura order. I had to bring my sushi back and talk to chef. Chef also reluctant to give me more wasabi. He was telling me the mis-ordered dish california roll and my and spider roll don't need wasabi. Sorry, I just love to eat my appetizers w me wasabi. This restaurant air is super stuffy. The place is small and I was the second table, after I ordered at 12:15pm, the place is full (6 tables only). Sushi was fresh but facility (toilet/furnitures) are very outdated. Waitress(grandma) don't speak much English, I don't expect a lot as it's run by old couple but I don't think I will come back. There are better choice , good service and better parking somewhere else. It seems like so hard to get here to have lunch. My lunch is over $150 w tips for three people for lunch, I did not paid for the standard cheap set lunch, they ring it up on a 1970s Cash register and I never seen my itemize receipt. This old world way of running a small business is very outdated. Something dinning experience is more than just good food. In my humble opinion, It's not worth the experience. There are better choice somewhere else. You only come here if you are looking for a Japanese chef not Korean. Spider roll is also not maki style (not a large roll, small size roll only-Japanese style)

Had the Omakase at the sushi bar with the chef and it was a great experience as usual. Had a variety of higher end fish. I feel a lot of them tasted the same but very fresh. We had salmon, flounder, aji mackerel, hamachi, hotate, ebi, toro and uni from what I can remember. Just like last time, they do the sushi rice so well here. These decor is a bit tired but the food is delicious. The service is a bit slow but it is a mom and pop shop.

some handrolls and nigiri
Nami A.

My best friend brought me here a while ago. We ordered some handrolls, futomaki, and some omakase. Everything was SO fresh-- especially the uni. So much so, I now have incredibly high standards when it comes to uni, and I feel like it will be hard to satiate my cravings unless I come to this specific restaurant. Be forewarned, the service is a bit slow, but that's because there are really only three people working: the elderly couple who are the owners and the dishwasher in the backroom. The husband is the sushi chef and the wife takes the orders and together they are so cute and very caring. The restaurant itself is very small and quaint, but it really doesn't matter, because the food they serve deserves to speak for itself and be the highlight of the experience. Definitely recommend this place!!

Made a trip to Port Moody just to try this little hole in the wall. Prior to this, it took several tries to get a reservation here as they are always full. We even tried to order take out, which was turned down. So PRO TIP --- call ahead of time if you're planning on going here. The food here was all super authentic and fresh. One of the shrimp that was served with our omakase is rarely seen at your average sushi joint. Def a must try

Simon L.

Had the omakase. This place is great. All fish imported from Japan, very fresh, and ran by an older japanese couple. The main chef/owner has been making sashimi for over 45+ years. Call in for reservations a head of time, the restaurant is really busy on weekends and i've seen them turn down multiple customers after not having resos. Sit by the bar counter for omakase and the chef will make it for you piece by piece. Had a great conversation with the owner. We talked and joked around during the entire meal. The fish was very fresh. It's firm and bounces right back. No fishy smells or scents at all. The price for omakase is also very reasonable for what it is. I would highly recommend to others and come back again. This isn't my first time here either :)

Omakase for 4!

I wish I discovered this tiny gem sooner! In my opinion, the sushi is the best bang for your buck in all of Vancouver. We can't wait to come back! We came here just after the lunch rush on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all. Of course, we all got the omakase. The price of $35/person for 11 pieces and 1 handroll is a total steal, especially considering the quality of the rice and fish! The rice is seasoned well that it doesn't overpower the flavour of the fish and each piece of fish was so fresh and delicious. No wasabi is served since it's already included in the nigiri. The restaurant definitely has Japan hole in the wall vibes, which I love. I believe the owner and his wife run the restaurant on their own so you'll just need to be patient if it's busy there. It's definitely worth the wait. Note the restaurant will be closed between mid July to August 24.

Matsuzushi has been on our radar to try since we first heard that they offered omakase for $25.00. Well, it's been awhile cause that's no longer the price. It's run by an elderly Japanese couple; husband is the chef, wife runs the front. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon with reservations (which weren't even necessary). We sat at the sushi bar where we were able to see the chef do his thing. Oddly, we weren't given any menus; he just assumed that we wanted the omakase. Service is on the slow side and we were only offered refills of our tea at the end of our meals. I did snag a menu afterwards; the lunch menu consists of appetizers, salads, rice bowl, sashimi, nigiri, rolls and pressed sushi (oshi sushi). There were a couple lunch box specials ($15.00) that looked like good value along with a today's special board. - 4x Omakase ($35.00) - chef's choice of 11 pieces of nigiri and one temaki. We were also given a miso soup. Nigiri pieces consisted of kampachi, mantis shrimp, abalone, saba, ika, salmon, ebi, aburi toro, stripjack(?), uni and negitoro hand cone. Favourites were the last couple pieces. Ebi (pinch of salt and squeeze of lime), ika (not chewy), aburi toro (excellently torched, fatty/buttery texture), uni (fresh and clean), stripjack (not sure if that's correct but this was a great bite) and the temaki (perfect ending). - Tamago nigiri ($3.00) - always have to try a piece of tamago. Nice touch that they warm it up but it tasted more like cooked egg than that sweet, luscious, eggy goodness that I prefer. Some pieces were good, some just okay. Pricey for lunch! If I were to come back again, I'd opt for the lunch box specials. 3.5 stars.

The donburi looked good with sufficient portion for a strong man. It was tasty, however as I kept eating the soy chicken karaage got more and more salty. Finally I couldn't have anymore. I finished the rice and it was well cooked. I drank two cups of tea after having the donburi. I didn't try other dishes, perhaps I will give them a try when I come here next time. I do hope the chef could make it less salty. Apart from that, service was fine and the ambient was quiet and tidy.

It comes with miso soup, shredded cabbage and rice The sauce wasn't the typical tonkatsu sauce but a more mild version of it. I think it was well priced for the amount of food. The Deluxe nigiri came with 7 different pieces of fish, including squid and ebi. 2 shrimp tempura and a vegetable one. The beef udon broth was flavourful with a soothing mix of dashi and beef. We were very full after all of the food and the service was good. The only negative is probably the parking. Pay parking around the area or maybe park at the mall and walk over.
