This little Japanese mom and pop shop has been quite the sushi gem for quite some time in North Burnaby. With it's short opening hours it sure speaks volumes how well they are able to maintain regular customers with the quality of their sushi. Their sushi are more on the traditional side and absolutely fresh and delicious! We ordered Saba Battera + Scallop/ Hamachi / Uni Nigiri + Dynamite Roll + Nigitoro Roll + Kilala House Roll. It's very hard to pick a favourite but saba battera and uni nigiri definitely stood out and their house roll is enormous even with half order!

Charashi Don. Must order.Traditional Japanese food at it's finest.

Traditional Japanese style, my favourite. The charashi don was delightful, the cut of fish and the portions are on point, compared to fusion portions. The vegetable udon was beyond simple that it was actually delightful. One can taste the almost undetectable kombi broth and just salt.

House roll half, negi saba shiso, unatama. All so good.

I stumbled upon this place after getting cakes and pastries from Chez Christopher which was a few doors away. With the latest restriction it was take out only. No dine in. The menu was simple and I appreciated that. I never really like those fancy special rolls which seemed to be the highlight for many Japanese restaurants in the lower mainland. I prefer traditional Japanese food, things you get in Japan. This is Japanese mom and pop shop and I think it makes a difference. It is the subtle little things which show the attention to details. The take out box was the typical Japanese tray, none of those styrofoam or plastic containers. I had the house roll (half portion), negi saba shiso and unatama rolls. They were fresh and really good. The house roll was huge and had lots of crabmeat (no mayo to bind it) and stuff. It was a thin layer of rice which I preferred. I would definitely go back to try the nigiri next time.

Small mom and pop shop that recently reopened dine in, enough to sit maybe 10 ppl. Sushi is fresh, flavourful and delicate and the wasabi tastes like the real deal. Not pictured are the toro + hokkaido hokkigai nigiri and negitoro roll which were absolutely mouth watering delicious. The chopped scallop roll had slightly too much mayo for my liking but still good. Service was quick and friendly. It's a bit of a drive from where I am, but it's always worth the trip-- of all the restaurants that survived Covid I'm most happy this one made it through! ‍‍

    Assorted Nigiri ($17.50)

Late Lunch: Assorted Nigiri ($17.50) and Spicy Tuna Don ($16) Sushi Craving Day. This is one of my favorite authentic Japanese sushi restaurants. Everything is fresh and melt in your mouth. Unfortunately they don't have uni today because uni is out of season. They only do take-out now. Taste:

Avocado roll, yam roll, negi saba shiso roll, ebi battera, ikura and scallop nigiri

Amazing sushi for an amazing price in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. In particular, I am a big fan of their nigiri as the fish was quite fresh and melted right in my mouth. They are currently not having dine in so I would recommend calling in ahead of time to order as it was about an hour wait on a Thursday evening. Overall, would highly recommend!

Sushi Bar Kilala is like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that, in my opinion, is one of the Burnaby Heights neighborhood's best kept secrets; which may be for the best given the limited amount of seating. I've been fortunate to get a table immediately every time I've gone. Here's everything I love about this place: - it's run by a friendly, incredibly down-to-earth couple (the husband makes all the food, while the wife attends to guests. Instantly, you see how well they work together) - all the seafood is fresh and full of flavour (in other words, they're the star ingredients) - the food is prepared in traditional Japanese style; it's deceptively simple, which makes you appreciate it even more - the uni nigiri is to die for; so much so that it earned its own bullet point What I would change: - I'm a girl with a low spice/heat tolerance, so I usually steer clear of wasabi. At Sushi Bar Kilala, a little bit of wasabi is used to bind the rice to the seafood in various rolls and pieces of nigiri. So if you're like me, that's something to keep in mind when ordering. I'm trying to build up my spice/heat tolerance though, and I find now that this small dose of wasabi is manageable :)

Need to practicing actually cutting the hamachi

Super fresh sushi and you can taste the quality. But some feedback for the owner while his daughter is apprenticing is making sure she cuts things right and checking. We recently ordered a large tray and order of hamachi and the pieces weren't cut through. It was terrible slicing.

Party tray 5 ($68) with ikura subbed for unagi

I finally got to try the sushi from Sushi Bar Kilala. It's a small little store run by an adorable Japanese couple, currently only offering takeout. I got their party tray 5 ($68) with the ikura substituted for unagi. Also got a salmon maki ($2.75) and ika nigiri ($2.50) cuz I had cravings . Everything was very fresh and a nice portion size. I really love that their uni has at least 2 pieces of roe on it the sushi rice is seasoned well and I love how their California rolls aren't overly saucey! It's rare nowadays that sushi restaurants just do simple sushi, cuz sometimes it's just what we want to have! Mind you, I love my saucy rolls and fusion Japanese food too! Not on any food delivery service and no website, best to call in advance the good ol'fashioned way to pre-order for pickup!

Sushi Bar Kilala has been on my list of Japanese mom and pop spots to try for ages. Seriously, this place is right up my alley. It's small, prices are fair and run by an older Japanese couple. It's close by to Chez Christophe. The inside is small with four seats at the sushi bar and 6 tables. Service is friendly, sweet and attentive. Love how they drop off a whole pot of green tea for the table. Note: they don't take reservations. The menu is split into combination, sushi (bowls, roll and pressed), hot food, nigiri and sashimi. They also have a whole page of party tray options. There were three specials available on their nigiri board. Trip #1 We dropped in on an early Wednesday evening (around 5:00pm) and were the first ones there. - Deluxe assorted sashimi ($29.75 for 15) - they gave us salmon, tuna, hamachi, tako, botan ebi and ika. Everything was fresh and good quality. Favourites were the hamachi, botan ebi and ika. - Saba battera ($11.50) - pickled mackerel pressed with sushi rice. Excellent and you get a touch of the tartness from the shiso leaf. - Chicken udon ($7.75) - a couple pieces of chicken and spinach. Simple but noodles had a good bite and broth was solid. - Umeshiso ($3.00) - Japanese plum and o-ba leaf. Don't see this too often so always order it. Love the tartness. - Negitoro ($3.95) - chopped tuna and green onion. Simple but well done. - Unatama ($5.00) - torched eel and egg omelette. Never seen this type of roll before. Everyone liked it. - Nigiri - we tried a couple of nigiri's including uni ($4.95), salmon ($2.00), tako ($2.75) and tamago ($1.80). Rarely order uni but this is their speciality. It was creamy, melt in your mouth and stuffed to the brim. Salmon and tako hit the spot but let's talk about the tamago. Man, oh man, this is always how I grade a Japanese spot and their tamago was money. Fantastic eggy texture, not overly sweet and creamy. - 2x Hokkaido hotate ($3.50 each) - this was on their specials board. Large scallop from Japan. Sweet and plump. Trip #2 We came on a late Saturday afternoon (around 2:00pm) and it was busier than we expected. - Beef udon ($7.75) - honestly, a good udon is hard to find in town. Like the broth, udon has a good bite and beef slices were good. Cheap too! - Negihama ($4.00) - yellowtail and green onion. Excellent. - Chopped scallop & tobiko ($4.75) - good chunks of scallop and fresh. Similar quality to what you get from Sushi by Yuji's version. - Negi saba shiso ($5.25) - pickled mackerel, green onion and o-ba leaf. Haven't seen this roll before. - Nigiri - we tried all of their specials; uni ($4.95), Haikkado hotate ($3.50) and anago ($3.00). Anago (torched sea eel) was fantastic; flaky, melt in your mouth. Really impressed. We also ordered toro ($3.00), saba ($2.50), beef tataki ($3.00) and tamago ($1.80). The toro is market price on the menu but reasonable. Not oily but good, buttery texture. Saba was solid; not too salty, almost as good as Makoto's. Beef tataki could have used a squeeze of acidity. Tamago still excellent. I'll be back for more traditional, quality sushi eats at SBK. Makes my top 5 sushi spots in the city.

Decent sushi place in Burnaby Heights. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as Hastings. The place seems to be a (Japanese) mom and pop shop. The interior looks rather plain a bit dated. Guessing the owners have been here for a while. There is a large mirror against the back wall that makes the place look twice as big as it really is. Service is friendly. I tried several rolls. Good quality. Nice springy rice. Fish tasted great. Pricing isn't the cheapest in the area and I did leave slightly hungry, but for those who want the old school authentic experience and don't mind paying a few bucks more, this place is worth checking out.

    Saba battera, tamago roll
    Hero F.

Ordered take out overall was good- the Saba was quite fishy so I saved some for the next day , u know good sushi rice when overnight in the fridge the nigiri rice stays strong n moist. Their Unagi is rly flavourful w/ no fishy flavor I recommend it. their tamago n mushrm rolls is the style I like My salmon in the salmon avo cone was bland, wouldn't go for it. The uni was pricier but it was an overflowing mouthful of delicacy, once in awhile as a treat I would get it. I almost couldn't find the place despite it right on hastings. Extra credit for the location Wher food choices lacks.

House Roll - Top left Bottom left to right Tamago, Taco, Tuna roll

I didn't choose this place, a vendor took me out here, and ranted and raved about how good it was! Usually I'm let down, but this place was GOOD. Definitely not the best sushi I've ever had? But I would recommend this to anyone who was in the area and craving sushi. The house roll was a bit big for me (that's purely my taste and not a flaw) but otherwise tasty enough. The taco nigiri and tuna roll were quite good, but I found the tamago lacking a little. Overall though? I want to go back!

We took awhile to look so we were asked at once point if we were ready and we sis we needed a bit more time so the server was delightfully accommodating and said whenever we were ready to give a server a call. Later on when we were ready our order was taken by a male staff member. We ordered a decent amount. Miso cheese eggplant, chawan-mushi, fried fish collar served in some kind of broth, 8pc nigiri omakase, blue fin tuna&uni hand cone, another hand cone but I can't remember what was in it..wifey ordered it, vegetable tempura and a black truffle dynamite roll. The highlight for me was the black truffle dynamite roll, it's taste was perfect. The right amount of truffle used and not over powering like I've had at so many other venues. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted. It was smokey, earthy and tasted wonderful. The miso cheese eggplant was delicious, slightly salty from the miso and wonderfully roasted soft eggplant. The fish colar in broth was light and delicate, beautiful flavor and texture. Chawanmushi was soft and delicate, excellently flavored. The omakase which had fish from Japan was delicious, super fresh and masterfully prepared! The tempura came with a green tea seasalt which was different but very nice. For dessert we had the green tea tiramisu which was very tasty. The restaurant itself is small but cozy and wonderfully decorated. My wife and I had a wonderful meal and I would go back for special occasions.

We sat in a separate section of the restaurant with 3 tables at the front. We ordered chicken wings, assorted tempura, miso black cod and an order of beef teriyaki that was not on the menu. The servings are very small for the prices charged. We found that the chicken wings (only 4 small wings) $9.50 were a bit dry. The tempura batter was not as crisp or crunchy as we've had. The miso black cod was a very small portion - maybe 4 oz. for $18.00. We did not feel that there was value for the money. The food was average and the prices were too high for the quality and amount of food received. We did not enjoy the anime that was playing and we were glad that we were not sitting in the main dining room. Overall, we feel that there are better options for a Japanese meal.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays).
