Returned for take out and I was reminded that I should come here more often! The menu doesnt have much other than nigiri, sashimi and rolls but they do these few items extremely well. The rice for all of the nigiris and roll are not tightly packed and the perfect ratio to the toppings/fillings. We especially loved the shiro roll because of the variety inside the roll and the fresh flavour of the fish. The chopped scallop nigiri had large pieces of scallop that bursted in your mouth as you bit into them and the negitoro was also great! I also love their chirashi don because its a reasonable price for high quality tuna, salmon, hamachi, ika, saba and a bit of scallop (my favourites!). They add a few shiso leaves and ginger for added variety in flavour and again, the rice is perfectly vinegary. The standout fish was definitely the hamachi that was buttery and had a beautiful colour! We also added their takoyaki and it was great with a nice chunk of octopus inside (but i am not sure if it is house made). Overall, we will remember to visit more often but keep in mind their portions are quite small! Bite size nigiri but thats just an excuse to order more! :D

Instantly my new favorite sushi bar. It's a super authentic spot Japanese owned and operated. The quality of the sushi is on par with the super fancy omakase type places where you would pay $200 per perosn. Their hamachi is 10/10 which is hard to find. They have blue fin and it's fairly priced and very high quality. And even their regular toro is really good, almost as good as the blue Fin. Pretty much everything I tired was good. Only thing I didn't like was the Saba. But keep in mind this is not a fancy place. Doesn't have much ambiance, just go here for the food :) they're sake is really good too.

*Updated review After a long week at work my project finally launched and it was a success! To celebrate, I decided to treat myself to one of my favourite sushi rolls - the full Shiro roll from Sushi by Yuji. I placed an order by phone to pick up. At $16 for 8 big pieces the Shiro roll isn't cheap but the quality is there and it is so worth it. The fish is consistently fresh and the roll is just oh so delicious and goes down easy. Getting the Shiro roll is a treat but one I don't mind getting every so often compared to others. Can't wait to order and share more sushi from Sushi by Yuji with friends and family, when I can.

My absolute favourite hole in the wall sushi place. The menu is quite simple, more suited for those who enjoy fresh fish and nigiri/gunkan. Quality ingredients which are reflected in the fair prices. This is a one man shop where one chef prepares everything, often with one server much like Shintaro Sushi in Richmond. Sushi by Yuji is a bit further out east and its hours can make it hard to visit (closes at 8:30) but when you can catch them, it's an excellent place for dinner. Due to Covid they are only open for dinner right now. Favourites are the ikura with egg gunkan, negitoro with egg gunkan and uni nigiri which is typically available between September to May. this is a very small restaurant, so when they resume down and I would highly recommend you calling ahead to make reservations. I miss the days where I could see the daily specials on a chalkboard hung on the wall instead of scrolling through an Instagram menu...

I haven't been here in years but decided to go tonight since they are close to home. It's funny how the server flipped the sign to "closed" when it was only 6:45pm and they close at 9:30pm. Also, there were 4 empty seats. They took forever for our food to arrive and when you see the other table food came out before yours, wouldn't you wonder (they ordered right after us). Sushi was okay, nothing special but I really dislike the alaska roll which had cream cheese in it. Anyway, with a plethora of sushi places we have in town, this wouldn't be my choice.

Was searching far and wide for omakase places that didn't necessarily break our wallets. Although Sushi by Yuji isn't necessarily an omakase place per se, it had that option. And for $50 bucks too! We got a variety of sushi pieces, some blow torched, some not. We wanted a specific sushi we saw on their social media, which was chopped up fatty tuna with quail egg on top. Each piece of fish we tasted was delicious. My favourite was the engawa (last one pictured). I've never had it before, but it's a part of a flounder and it melted in my mouth

This is an excellent, unpretentious restaurant. The dishes taste excellent. Ingredients are simple yet high quality. The bottom line is that this is an unassuming restaurant with excellent quality food at a fair price point. This place gets busy so would recommend reservations!

Such fresh delicious sushi for affordable pricing!! Quality of a fine dining restaurant tucked away in a small local shop. I keep coming back because the fish is so delicious.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! If I could give this place ten stars I would! I went there New Year's Eve and I am really glad I did. A wonderful reminder that simple things, perfectly done, can be wonderful. This is a place for perfect, flawless, simple sushi. If you are looking for specialty rolls, mayonnaise, dozens of options, lots of side dishes, or bargain sushi, go elsewhere. If you are looking for absolutely fresh, hand selected fish, perfectly cut, perfectly seasoned, perfectly assembled, so that every bit of natural flavor and nuance comes through, in the kind of place that pickles their own ginger, grates real, fresh wasabi by hand, and treats every type of fish as a completely different ingredient, you probably cannot do better anywhere in metro Vancouver. The menu is small. The prices are by the piece. You pay for every mouthful. But every mouthful is perfect.

Sushi By Yuji is a discreet hole-in-the-wall restaurant where the owners prioritize fresh and high-quality ingredients over fancy decor and gimmicks. The staff here are all very traditional, polite and respectful. You get either free hot tea or water upon arrival before your waitress explains the daily specials in addition to their relatively small menu of mostly classic Japanese dishes such as udon, sushi, sashimi and donburi (rice bowls). Everything is prepared freshly and efficiently. However, getting a spot at this place is quite difficult. You either need to make reservations way in advance, or come when they open up for dinner and hope that you'll be able to get a bar spot during their first seating. I thoroughly enjoyed their house roll and the classic "kitsune udon", which is a hot bowl of udon with a slightly sweet piece of deep fried tofu.

The only pro tip you need: GET A RESERVATION! Sushi By Yuji is a hidden gem and rightfully so. You can completely miss this place just by driving along Kingsway. Started with wild salmon sashimi which was super fresh. Normally I would order farmed salmon for the fattier flavour but this had a very clean taste to start the meal. We ordered several gunkan sushi and nigiri. All of them were excellent except texture wise I would stick to normal negitoro without the egg. They had a bunch of specials posted on the wall like the Uni Gunkan and Bluefin Tuna Roll I'm a fan of the uni and they did not skimp on the portion at $5.50/pc. The uni was so sweet with the right amount of brine and just melts in your mouth. I would probably skip the bluefin roll since it was akami which is the lean part of the tuna. It was super fresh but at $9 I'd probably not order it the next time around. What I did not expect was how good their chopped scallop was. Normally at other places you'd get mostly mayo for filler but these were chopped with bigger pieces and light on mayo and tobiko so you could really taste the freshness of the scallop. It was so good I ordered another roll! Overall I would be back and highly recommend trying this place if you haven't. Just don't forget to reserve!

Assorted Sushi Set + Egg for Negitoro

A no-fuss, authentic Japanese sushi joint that makes me cry literal tears of joy every time I pay them a visit. NOTE: Make a reservation in advance as seating is limited! [Items Tried] *MUST TRY* Assorted Sushi Set (Added egg to negitoro +$0.50) - $21 (5/5) Taste: The set came with 8 pieces of nigiri: - Tuna - Salmon - Hamachi - Kanpachi - Negitoro - Scallop - 2 random (in this case, Hamachi & Saba) - Tuna Roll (6 pieces) For me, I can tell the fish is fresh when you taste the Hamachi, which typically has a strong fishy taste if it's been sitting out for a while. However, the Hamachi was soft, buttery, and the right combination of fattiness and chewiness. Their tuna roll is also amazing - while simple, the ingredients are fresh and the fish has a great melty texture. Note that the saba sushi and tuna roll comes with shisho leaves which is a minty leaf that accentuates the flavour but not necessarily enjoyed by everyone's palette! Personally, I liked it in the tuna roll, but found it a little overpowering in the saba. Portion Size: Good for 1 person. Natto Roll - $3.50 (4/5) Taste: Fermented soya bean with green onion in a sushi roll. If you enjoy fermented foods, I would highly recommend giving this a try - otherwise, the slimyness and the stinky fragrance of the roll may deter you away. To me though, this roll was delicious. Portion size: Snack size for 1 person. [Value for Money] While this sushi place is not cheap, I would say that it is at a reasonable price point given the high quality of fish and variety of fish they provide. Again, one of my favourite sushi restaurants in Vancouver!

Dined here back in April and they had separated tables in an already small restaurant so make sure you book in advance! Very fresh fish and traditional nigiri selection. The hamachi here is amazing - even better than toro! Loved their assorted deluxe sushi combo and their special of the day, which was wild salmon cheeks. Definitely a must-return if you love traditional sushi (no fancy fusion rolls with special sauces. Just the fish, rice and soy sauce). Steep as it is, I decided I wanted a "quick little sushi lunch with a view", and a quick little sushi lunch with a few is exactly what I received. Although I don't recommend it, I walked right in from the street, no reservation, and was seated at the bar (in pretty casual street clothes I may add). I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

Michelin starred quality in their service by how they explained the menu, brought out the food, came back around to refill waters. Just top notch service and elegantly so. The food was good but not of value. Their lunch set was a good introductory to what they offer. I enjoyed the food for its flavours and presentation but I thought that it was a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, fresh and definitely elevated, but it was $50 for 10pcs of sushi, 2 appetizer sized samples of their appetizer or entree dishes, and miso soup (which we did not get and didn't realize till much later in the day). If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.
