A lovely 20 seat restaurant in the heart of Steveson with good food and a lovely host serve. I would recommend

The unagi is very tasty. Sushi is fresh. Their takeout service is quick and friendly. The restaurant got the order right. read more

This place is quite small and with safety protocols in place, there are only 4 tables available for diners. Best to make reservations if you really wish to dine here. I was lucky to get a table as I came in just before the lunch rush. It was a random thing and I was glad I got to try the food. I believe it is run by a Japanese couple and they are lovely with the Japanese hospitality. The menu features items not commonly found like the madai set (stewed madai head) -- limited quantities and only for lunch. I had the chirashi lunch set and it came with 3 mini appetizers and tempura. It reminded me of the ladies lunch set at Japanese restaurants in Asia. Not a huge portion but sufficient to feel 70-80% full. The food is good here and I will be back again to try other dishes. Maybe the madai next? read more

Excellent and authentic Japanese food. Great service to father and son working together. It was very enjoyable.

This is my must visit and dine in when I am in Stevrston. There has been several occasion I didn't time my visit right and they are closed between lunch and dinner and it was so disappointing. Anyhow, when I got to eat here....life is different that day. I absolutely love their chirashi don as it is one of the freshest and most authentic in Richmond. I love their miso soup as well as their prawn tempura. It is lightly battered like how it should be and never greasy when served. The dipping sauce is light and clean, acts as an enhancement rather than to overpower the dish. The service here is also always pleasant. It is a small restaurant but they are quite clever at creating a good amount of seats with some booth as wells. Highly recommend if you have never step foot here. I can't wait to be back soon! read more

My family has always been sushi lovers for years and we have our standards. We were in Vancouver for vacation and my nephew recommended that we should there. Every dish was a delight. We can't wait to go back. read more

Small place. Friendly staff. Clean bathrooms. Food was ok. We've definitely had better sushi at other places, especially in Richmond, so this place was ok. Not a bad spot, but not memorable. read more

It was great food and service. Nice place. I'll be back again. Will try many foods on the menu.

Came back again to have my favourites - uni and conch, and stewed beef tendon. Always a pleasure to eat here! Hamachi, toro, uni, and saba are my favourite nigiri here. I usually don't order hamachi elsewhere but the fish here is so fresh! Saba is marinated in house and all the sauces are made by Koji himself. read more

Steveston is full of hidden gems and Shintaro is definitely another delicious one. A small restaurant with 4-5 tables, this cozy Japanese restaurant, will give you an authentic and fresh meal. It's located up the steps, next to Cimona Café. I ate here with my little sister on a Tuesday Lunch time and it was't busy but I'm sure the business will pick up once the word gets out about this wonderful place so eat here before it gets packed. We both chose the Chirashi Lunch Set $16. The miso soup was nicely flavoured and had soft tofu, not overly salty either, I finished it all, which is uncommon for me and miso soup. The tempura was lightly battered and crisped nicely so you could taste the fresh ebi, green bean, melon and yam. The sashimi was fresh and smooth, the rice was perfectly done and the presentation was lovely. The santenmori ("3 side dishes") tasted truly homey and complimented the main dishes - mildly pickled cabbage, mini pork stew which was rich and tender, and an eggplant side. Lots of other delicious choices from their menu: simple and complex rolls, sashimi, nigiri, hot appetizers, dons, and more. Service was super attentive and friendly. Water and teas were topped up and the politeness was refreshing. Overall, a lovely Japanese sushi addition to the many other restaurant in Steveston, but the fresh sashimi, pretty presentation and kind cozy service make it it's own. read more

Personable and simple sushi that hits the craving for fresh chef's choice sashimi, anago don, and matcha cheesecake. The stewed beef tendon (not pictured) is also a popular dish and warms you up on a rainy Fall evening. It's upstairs of Timmy's Kitchen and only got 8 tables but this is another reason why Steveston is becoming a secret space for satisfying a hankering for good sushi. read more

Food is alright, but not anything spectacular. Service was really slow (seems like there was only one chef and one waitress?), and way too overpriced for the amount of food you get. Probably wouldn't come back because there are so many better options for sushi in Richmond. read more

I came in for lunch on a weekend and had the unagi set. The sauce was perfect and the unagi delicious. The sashimi and tempura sides really gave this set good value. The portions were a perfect size to be just filling but leaving room for dessert. The place was small but still inviting...spacious, bright, well appointed. If you're visiting Steveston you're likely not out for sushi...but if you're out for an amazing Japanese meal, visit Shintaro then think about unwinding in Steveston afterwards. read more

Got here right at 5pm tonight as they were opening. Had seen the high Yelp reviews and was excited for a great experience. However, the hostess/server immediately turned us away (quite rudely) upon entrance, saying "sorry I'm booked up the whole night." The restaurant was EMPTY. I repeat: EMPTY. So we went downstairs to the casual Chinese restaurant instead, which was at least willing to accept our patronage. After our meal, I went back up to Shintaro - just out of curiosity - and... lo and behold it was still totally EMPTY! This was at 6pm. We could have been sat and eaten and left as the place was completely available. Shocking! You are not a VIP hotspot in NY! Get a grip! I feel bad for the owners if employees are turning away business for no reason. Really bad. read more

Sashimi is good. Miso black cod is kind of salty. Termpura is decent. Inaniwa Udon is great!

Been almost a year since I last dined here -- delighted to say it's still umami-licious (yes, merits a made-up word). Fresh ingredients, nuanced flavours, dishes on the fresh sheet that quietly deviate from the typical Japanese menu (like the cold "fried" eggplant with a kick-ass ginger and bonito sauce that was probably not meant to be slurped up, agedashi mozzarella and real crab croquette that both offer creamy deep fried yet light-tasting goodness) with solid nigiri and whole fish sashimi to boot. Rice beer also worth a special mention...made for dangerously smooth drinking, I had to say "yes please" to another bottle. Here's to not letting another year go by before another meal at Shintaro! read more

Hooray for quality sushi in Steveston Village, finally! Another quaint and small sushi restaurant run by a japanese couple, Shintaro only has 3 two-seater tables and 3 four-seater booths. My dining companion and I shared several rolls, including a salmon roll, avocado roll, negitoro roll, and chopped scallop roll. The chopped scallop roll was by far the most impressive, filled with very fresh tasting scallop, like you would find on a piece of scallop nigiri. Unlike most chopped scallop rolls I have had, this one was not overpowered by mayo, and thus allowed the scallop to shine. The salmon roll was pretty standard for sockeye. The only disappointing one was the negitoro roll - it just tasted quite bland. The waitress was very pleasant and had our tea topped up the whole time. My only complaint is that the food took about half an hour to arrive, which felt rather long for lunch, especially given what we had ordered and the fact that there was only one other party at that time. I would just take that as a blip though, because a group arriving after us who ordered a couple of lunch sets had their food within 10-minutes. read more

Excellent sushi and Udon noodles. A real homely family run restaurant that focuses more on really making good traditional sushi. This is perhaps the best traditional sushi in Richmond. For Lower Mainland this is about as good as it gets in the heavily Japanese influenced fishing town of Steveston. Service was excellent as our server checked regularly if our needs were being met. Only maybe 7-8 tables and a sushi bar stool seating..Prices are quite reasonable considering the quality and t they have a great selection of Sake to boot. read more

Took me two hours to get here from my home metrotown, but it dodnt disppoint me. This is a little hidden gem around the steveston community, pretty sure this is the best sushi you can have in steveston. This sushi place is full of surprise. First the Madai is skin on, which is quite surprising as the skin of Madai is too tough to consume raw, this tells me a thing that they use a special technique, cover the fish loin with a damp cloth and pour hot water over, so the skin is cooked but the fish is not, as the skin doeant seem burnt so I am pretty sure they use this technique instead of Aburi-ing the fish. The maguro tataki which is the seared red tuna is topped with garlic ginger and scallions, not just gives the tuna a little refreshness and spiciness, but also brings out the inner flavour of the fish itself. The toro nigiri is a little over mediocre but I am pretty sure you can get similar or even better Bincho toro nigiri in other good sushi joint. The saba sushi which is raw is not a surprise at all, the saba nigiri is not a loss doe, just again around mediocre. The crab leg nigiri is a surprise on the menu as I don't see much sushi chef do this nigiri around, but the quality of the crab is a little bit inferior, the crab is quite stringy and rubbery. The ika is pretty good, gives me a glutinous kinda texture as well as a sweetness and a slight ocean breeze. The uni is not too good, as the uni has a weird scent, indicating the freshness of the uni is way passed its prime state. However, when we talk about the unagi and anago, especially the anago, I think its one of the best anago I ve ever had. If the anago nigiri from a normal sushi place is a machine gun, the anago here is a dynamite. The flavour of the tsume sauce of the anago is complex but also simple, the flavour of the sauce including hon Dashi since the taste of katsuo bushi takes quite a huge part of the scent and flavour of the sauce, the other flavours included sweetness, comes from mirin, sugar and aswell as a sweet but also a salty umami from the soy sauce, the flavour other than the katsuo is a little mildwr , but the balance of the flavour was well done, after all the tsume reduction is a tsume reduction, but this piece of anago really do surprises me, this piece of anago is simple yet complex, using the most tradition way to make a piece of anago but the balance of the flavour, if there is no points loss on the other sushi, this place might be one of my flavourite sushi place around the world, and again yes the anago is that phenomenal. read more

im rating the sushi and not the cooked food. probably the best sushi in richmond for me (i havent been to sushi hachi) if you like your sushi cut up in large parts, then this isnt the place for you. if you want your sushi to be authentic and tasty then this is the place for you. in the summer, he does a mix cold odeng which is soulful and refreshing. we frequent this place and found out the owner/chef used to be a sushi chef at kio on No.5 Rd. also, a decent liquor selection with some assortment of sake which always is paired well with sushi or sashimi. read more

We love this authentic Japanese restaurant. They do more than the standard sushi items. You can also watch the chef work while eating as they have an open kitchen. Every time we go the chef offers original dishes with catch of the day and the menu items never disappoint. Make sure you book ahead as it fills up quickly. read more

Authentic tastes of Japan - as close as you'll get in Vancouver. Their sashimi is some of the freshest I've ever tasted. Their fried items are a delicacy! There is only 1 chef who does all the cooking so wait times can be long and it is relatively expensive for the portions. read more

I had dinner here on a Saturday night around 5:30. My son and I were the only customers. It felt so relaxing to be overlooking Bayview street and be away from the crowds. The restaurant is small but it feels much bigger due to the vaulted ceiling and skylight. The two of us were seated right at the window. They were playing romantic French music. It was kind of funny. I told my son that I felt like we were on a "date". We ordered 1. saikyo (black cod with miso sauce) from the big list of specials on the fresh sheet. This was excellent. 2. Agedashi tofu - well done, with a lot of bonito flakes 3. spicy scallop roll - not too spicy, you can still taste the scallops 4. dragon roll - avocado with unagi on top. Very nice. Everything we ordered was very fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back. This restaurant probably can't accommodate large groups as there only one chef (the owner?) doing everything. We also found the waitress very attentive and came by a few times to top up tea and ask how we liked our food. read more

I'm surprised at the good reviews! Service was good but the place was empty( never a good sign). We thought the miso soup tAsted fat too seaweedy and the rolls were shockingly small for the price. I expect more than an appetizer for a $10 plus roll. They were not very good either and the tempera inside tasted like old oil. We will not be back. We had to go grab something else to eat after so it was a super expensive mistake. read more

Authentic japanese food, feels like dining in common restaurant in Japan. The atmosphere

Excellent evening with a great and authentic Japanese meal. The food is terrific and the service is great. I felt like I was back in Japan!

Best Japanese in Steveston, perhaps all if Richmond. Extremely small place, make reservations if you want to to be seated. Appreciate they serve seasonal only and sometimes don't have what you might be looking for. Service isn't over friendly (especially when walk-in customers come in) but it's efficient and the quality of the food speaks for itself. read more

If you want authentic Japanese dining go to Shintaro Sushi. They are always so welcoming and the food is excellent. We always go when we get the chance and highly recommend it. The food may a little slower coming out when it's busy but that is to be expected since there is only one person doing all the cooking and sushi. The service is always great and the food is too. read more

Definitely a place I will come back to. Fresh ! Worth the drive. A hidden gem in Richmond

Good food. Definitely different then the usual sushi joints I go too. Can get pricey but it's worth it ! The mochi ice cream is a must try!

A hidden gem. They serve great sashimi and sushi. They also have great sea eel which is miles better than any other Japanese restaurant that also serves eel. Their menu doesn't have lots of varieties but have enough from each category. Their restaurant is not that big and have enough seats for about 20 in total. Services are great and food are fresh. Their fish stock is real good. I will definitely go back. read more

Great sushi place, always craving it now! Owned by friendly Japanese couple. Taste of food always consistently good. Portion is a bit small for the price, but each and every item on the menu is delicious. Service is absolutely wonderful, with tea topped off at good times. Only complaint is that food takes a long time to come, mainly because it appears that there is only 1 chef. Otherwise, great food, great service! read more

Food quality was okay but food was so dry. Portion was ridiculously small. After paying full price of the food, we tried to reflect to the owners that their food was a bit pricey, other than that, taste is good... they had such a bad attitude that the woman owner rolled her eyes and stared at us very rudely while we walked out. The male owner then chased after us and intimidated us by saying "What's wrong? What's wrong???" We told him nicely (outside his restaurant) that most of the prices on menu were double of what we usually paid... he was sooo mad and howled ON THE STREET at us saying "I showed u the price... what's wrong?" We kept telling him- It's just our feedback.. he kept howling "u ordered the food, they were on the menu.. what's wrong?" OMG, we were just so surprised that restaurant business with this kind of attitude can still survive nowadays in this competitive world... JUST IN STEVESTON I GUESS!! Watch out!! fellow foodies.. read more
