Another dish was served smoking and another with flames.. food quality was fine but the salmon dish was a bit overcooked and dry. It included lobster tail, 2 dynamite rolls, yam tempura, masago and 2 pieces of yakitori. This would have been enough for 2 people, but we ordered a couple of more dishes. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and around 1:20, it was pretty empty but their lunch specials were still going until 3PM! We ordered their sushi and sashimi lunch special, nabeyaki udon and sunset roll. All three were good quality and tasty, especially the fresh sashimi that went with the lunch special (they even let us sub the ebi for hamachi for a small cost) and the sunset roll, albeit small, was very tasty with fresh fish and a had a very reasonable rice to filling ratio! In addition, the nabeyaki udon was very good with plenty of vegetable toppings, chicken, frozen seafood, an egg and prawn tempura! This soup was also not too salty and there were plenty of noodles! Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to return in the future despite the slightly higher prices, especially for special rolls. read more

In a city filled with infinite sushi options, how do you stand out? Creative options, friendly service, and flavourful dishes. That's exactly what Mega Sushi excels at. I popped in here for a quick lunch meeting and from start to finish I was impressed. Since this is located a bit further than the main Steveston Village, there is more free street parking available. Upon walking in, my first two thoughts were "wow, it's very clean in here" and "it's more spacious in here than I thought". Since it was after the lunch rush, we were sat right away. Our server came over right away and brought both hot tea and iced water, which I loved. Usually I have to ask for water at sushi restaurants, so this was a first for me. Our orders were taken right away, our food was brought out fairly quickly, and our teas/waters were never empty. 5 stars for service alone. I love saucy maki rolls and Mega Sushi's menu is in no shortage of delicious looking saucy rolls. I had such a hard time deciding. I ended up going for the spicy yam roll and hurricane roll (crawfish filling). Both were delicious and the perfect size! My work pal and I decided to split an order of the agedashi tofu, which was perfectly flavoured. Loved my lunch here so much that I told my parents about it right away and said they needed to check it out ASAP. Decent sushi joint in the Steveston area. Parking is plentiful in the evenings on the street. The interior looks pretty classy, and there is a nice large outdoor patio. The sushi here isn't the cheapest, but is reasonably priced. The salmon isn't farmed. Pieces are very fresh and tasty. Special mention goes to the deep fried oysters. Fresh and piping hot, with extra crispy batter. The oysters are of the smaller variety. There are 6 in an order. The one complaint I have is that they kept messing up our order. We waited over 90 minutes for those deep fried oysters to show up, even after we flagged the staff down several times and watched other groups who showed up after us get their oysters. To be fair, in the end they comped those oysters. But it put a sizeable dent into an otherwise enjoyable dinner. read more

This is a great place to get quality sushi. You can really taste the difference between other sushi joints that don't serve fresh ingredients and this one. I had the dragon roll which was AMAZING and the sockeye nigiri was sooooo good. One thing I don't like about here is the prices. I think they're a bit pricey for the amount of food you get. I was expecting the roll to be bigger but it was actually pretty small... wish they would give a bit more because it is so good! On a side note, I find the restaurant quite small and it was pretty awkward sitting at our table being so close to other people. It was a surprise, especially on a long weekend Friday trying to find something the nomnomnivore actually wanted to eat, which was affordable sushi.... well that is a dime a dozen and it was just trying to find a place open on this Good Friday. Using the helpful app we called and they said answered, that means full steam ahead. We arrived at 6 and I have to say I was surprised as I have been to this place.. before it was this sushi joint, the other thing that was suprising.. it was packed... it's 6 only. I can see there was one reserved table and they really pinned us between two other tables, but we didn't care, we were just hungry and ready to eat. They handed us menu's and I have to say... standard fare for what it is nowadays, appetizers, rolls, fancy rolls, ooooh oishi sushi, noodles, rice, drinks, everything you expect nowadays from a Japanese restaurant. We were set on ordering scallop rolls, BC rolls, some plum blossom roll which I can't seem to find on the menu, and yaki soba. Everything came accordingly with the scallop and BC roll coming together presented nicely on one plate. I was really craving for a good BC roll and Mega does this right, with enough skin in each roll where if you are a fan of this like I am you will like where this is going. I wish they could have seared the skin just a little more, but what they have done is quite nice. Everyone talks about the balance of rice and whatever filling there is in their rolls, where let me tell you they don't 'over-rice' here where you are carb'd out. The scallop roll was good, but my stomach was fixated to the salmon skin. Very fair amounts here, wish they could have given more wasabi but they do give enough ginger slices. The plum blossom roll was a very different creation, a little on the sweeter side, but quite refreshing, a different take on the California roll, might order again. The last dish was the cooked dish, yaki soba, and it came out piping hot on a hot plate, the noodles were done just right, the nomnomnivore said it was a little too sweet, but other than that there was good bite and balance. This place is located away from Steveston Village, and there is a ton of parking away from their tiny parkade in front. They have a patio if you like to enjoy the outsides, you probably want to call if you are coming as I feel many people know this place and the wait can be quite long when they are serving up food like this. This place used to be amazing. When they first opened several years ago, it was the sushi place everyone in Richmond went to. I don't know what happened but it went down hill. Went here recently and the food was extremely overpriced. Lastly, the Unagi was SLIMY and stringy, and felt undercooked. I spat it out. What a waste of $4 for one bbq eel nigiri - I felt nauseated after even though I spat most of it out... it didn't taste fresh or fully cooked. I really hope I don't get food poisoning. read more

I've been here a few times now and most of my previous experience visiting this place has been great. However, the last visit was less than stellar. We had to wait over an hour for an order. Talked to 3 employees, all lied about our order "it's coming soon" and "it's on it's way" but never came until I went up to one of the girls and asked her where our order is. We were freezing outside sitting and waiting for our food to arrive. I think they accidentally gave our order to another table and they decided to eat it anyway because after complaining, they immediately served the dish to my table along with a few cans of pop as an apology. I went to Mega Sushi thinking I was going to try something new in Steveston, before realizing it had the exact same menu as another place in Steveston (Ora). No worries though, I got to try a new dish that day. The "Monkey Brain" name might deter you from eating it (and maybe ruin your appetite), BUT I do encourage you to try it especially if you love avocados. Imagine lightly deep fried outside, soft warm avocado drizzling with sweet sauces. And if you're worried about the spiciness, it's not at all spicy. I found it to be a perfect nice snack to get me through. Compared to Ora on a Tuesday (5pm), it is a lot more busier, so it did take me a while to flag down the one waitress that was working. I did enjoy the aesthetic of the place, with patio seating to boot. Would come here again to relax after hanging out in the park. read more

July 7, 2019 I'm sad to report that one of my favorite sushi places in Richmond wasn't expected on my last visit. Sockeye salmon and toro sashimi was fine big pieces seemed a bit stiff and frozen like. Big boss roll was as remembered but it looked a little disheveled and lost it's pizzazz in presentation. They have new aburi sushi nigiri and we tried the scallop and toro aburi. Scallop was big pieces and lacks in taste and presentation. Some white sauce and green onion didn't do much to this nigiri. Toro nigiri was simply flamed and thrown on same sauces from its rolls on the menu. Not what you expect from aburi and butchers this Japanese concept. Tried the special of the day Asari clams which were small and worse of all gritty to the taste. Not cleaned well. Very salty creamy garlic sauce and again not representative of true asari garlic clams. After these appetizers I hesitated to order more fusion type dishes. Tried the dragon roll which was nicely done. Chicken udon wasn't great, my first time having chicken udon where it's cutlet chicken in the udon soup. Old chicken thrown in soup. For dessert we ordered green tea and coconut ice cream. The last straw was when I saw the waitress get pre packaged ice cream in cellophane wrap from the staff room likely freezer in the back and put this on a large serving plate. Chocolate sauce drizzled on the green tea square ice cream didn't take away this 7-eleven feel. Coconut ice cream was really the coconut mango delight thing you see from Mario gelato pre packaged. We decided to try a half order lobster party roll and were kind of surprised/puzzled as to why it came with a chicken yakitori. We also ordered a tuna and sockeye salmon sashimi and both fish clearly weren't defrosted well enough. Every time I'm back in the Lower Mainland, Mega Sushi is the only restaurant I make sure I go to. This last time I was in, I noticed that they had updated their menu for the first time in years. All my favourite creamy special rolls were still in play, so no complaints there. There are some Korean dishes in the menu, and the servers I've met have been Korean over the years. In the very beginning, they gave out these tiny little pills that expanded into a hand towel in hot water - wish they still had that cute gimmick. We always recommend the mega tower, although this last time we noticed it was loaded up with imitation crab meat. We've seen the mega tower evolve over the years with slightly different ingredients adorning the tower of sashimi, but this is the first time there's been such an obvious ratio difference of crab to sashimi. Other favourites include the mega roll (if you're down for spicy) and fire dragon roll (which comes with tiny little flames on either side as decor). Their ebi mayo is really creamy the way I love it too. An extra plus is that the restaurant is right by Garry Point within the Steveston tourist district, so you can walk off all the extra sushi calories and/or get ice cream at the pier for dessert (after the milkita candies Mega Sushi gives away when you pay). It located on Chatham Street at Steveston, Richmond and opened a year ago. The interior is nice and simple. It's new gems at Steveston! It's not an authentic Japanese restaurant which runs by Korean. Sashimi: Hamachi (Yellowtail) - Fresh but extremely thin slices than other sashimi Salmon - Good as standard Red Tuna - Delicious Rolls/Sushi/Cone: Stanley Roll - Salmon and avocado in special home-made sauce, big roll and tasty sauce matching. Salmon Roll - Salmon and salmon roe in mayo sauce, simple presentation but salmon roe just a bit fishy. Mega Roll - Deep fried salmon and topped w/crab meat. Fabulous looking but not in bite size. Paradise Roll - Deep fried ebi and cream cheese topped w/seaweed. Tasty and rich cream cheese sauce. Uni sushi - Extremely fresh and cheap (only $2.99 each) Chopped scallop cone - Probably too much mayo and a bit soaky for wrapped seaweed. Assorted tempura - It wasn't crunchy outside but good thing was not greasy. Chicken Karage - Big deep fried chicken breast served in Chinese bamboo rack. After 1.5 hour dining, the server dropped off the bill to us without saying a word!!! My friend called her back and asked if we wanna order a dessert or something else, can we? The food was amazing. The service was spectacular. It was a great meal for me and my friends. This place is far into Steveston near Garry point but it is totally worth the drive. The waitresses were super and they even offered us free miso soup and a complimentary plate of beef carpaccio (see pictures). We tried the Mega sashimi boat with salmon, tuna, tai, ebo, Saba, hokkigai, roe and incredibly fresh uni. Crispy crunch roll, sexy roll (our fav- very refreshing), tuna tataki, tuna tartar and Godzilla roll (definitely recommend for something different). Everything was so good. My wife and I used to like this place a lot and we would choose Mega Sushi over any other place. The last couple of times we've been here left us with a not so Mega experience. Today, after almost a year, we came back to see if our weekend lunch experience would be different from the last few times. Before, every lunch visit came with a long line outside. Not today, and that should've been a sign. And I see why. The price increase, for one. I understand it's been almost a year and the ever increasing cost of living in YVR...but, WOW! I mean, I'd be able to justify it if there were some gold flakes in every dish. As a matter of fact, it went the other way and the portions have shrunk. We used to love the Mega Tower and we almost always order this dish. But it definitely wasn't like how we remembered it. The sashimi was good but the sushi rice wasn't fresh and tasted old and hard. And it tasted different. Or, did my palate change? The chicken udon used to be one of my kids' fav and even they didn't like it as much. The service however is pretty good. Update 3.5/5: I was pleasantly surprised that management reached out after our previous experience, and applaud the owner for asking specific questions about the experience and food, and for taking our concerns seriously. Five stars for the owner's customer service! Having said that, I can't really say Mega Sushi has improved since our last visit. We came here as a group of four last night with reservations and were seated immediately. We ordered the blue ocean roll again: it was tasty but compared to the first dozen times we came here, it looked like the chefs cheaped out on the fish. I'd say the same for the Godzilla Bite (less scallop more rice and greens now). Overall the food was mediocre and expensive. The servers were friendly although we felt a bit rushed to pay the bill even though there were plenty of empty tables and no customers waiting. One of the servers took the bill and proceeded to enter payment before any of us even had a chance to look at the bill. We keep having high hopes for this place we used to love coming to.....not a bad experience at all, but still a bit of a disappointment. read more

We were craving sushi, and I had asked if he wanted basic/classic rolls (Ichiro/Takeya) or fancy rolls (mega sushi). I brought my friend here as he has never tried this place. He was quite overwhelmed with the extensive menu. Beef Terriyaki Roll- He said it was good, but the roll is big and meaty, definetly a man roll. There was alot of meat and it was slightly chewy. He prefers Seto sushi Beef Terriyaki Roll as it the terriyaki sauce tastes better and both the beef and rice is soft. He said everything just goes together. I didn't get to try as I'm not a Beef Terriyaki Roll person, and it did look a bit too meaty for me. Unagi Nigiri I loved it! The flavor, the thickness and the portion is so good! $2.25 is cheap! Salmon Oshi This was good! I liked it. My friend said his favorite is still Kishimoto, but we need to go back to try it again before he can make that statement lok. But comparing all other restaurants I have tried, the Oshi sushi here is very close in quality as Kishimoto. Steveston Roll I like this dish. It looks like nothing special, but the sauce and sushi was sooo good. The sushi itself has tuna, cucumber and avocado, topped with sprouts, sitting on chili mayo sauce in the centre, and surrounded by hot sauce? Chilli oil? To me it wasn't spicy, but to my friend, he thinks it'll pack on heat for him as he continues to eat it. I've came here before and I wasn't a fan of the steveston roll. This place is probably one of the more decent place for sushi. It is not the most cheapest but the quality of their sashimi is it's definitely better than the average sushi joint. This is my second time visiting Mega Sushi - it's a bit of a drive and therefore it doesn't always come to mind when I feel like having sushi. We ordered some sashimi, beef capriccio, their crunchy roll and my favourite agedashi tofu! The sashimi was fresh, above average for sure. The beef capricious was very tasty and very tender! The roll was a huge disappointment- it wasn't crunchy like the name and the tempura prawn was a bit soggy and cold - felt like the rolls you buy from the grocery store. The agedashi tofu was good...if any Japanese restaurant fails this, they need to not be in business! If you want a good sushi place when you visit Steveston, this is one of the few places! Do NOT even go to Yokohama! My reviews are usually quite honest and straight to the point. I feel that when I pay to eat, there has the some sort of standards and restaurant should earn their reputation as a result of quality and service. If I may, 3.5 stars. I've never had such a RICH sushi experience before, and I blame my own ordering. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant is quite fabulous! It is clean, thoughtfully decorated, maned by attentive and friendly staff (came over at least 7 or 8 times during our meal to check on us), and boasts an impressive selection of innovative Korean-infused Japanese dishes. We started off with the Tuna Tartar that made everyone gawk at its beautiful presence: it is a creamy mixture of diced tuna, avocado and green onions laced with Black roe on top, surrounded by SPECIAL SAUCE that is made into a pattern. This is a dish that I highly recommend. Then we had the Crazy Boy Roll, which is deep fried Cali roll with 3 signature sauces that bind all the ingredients to a savory mixture, but now we are starting to feel the mayonnaise. The Godzilla Bite is very cool - deep fried seaweed and rice with tuna, salmon, torched spicy chop and alfalfa on top with special sauce. Again, note the SPECIAL SAUCE? The rice for the nirigi sushi are a bit starchy but at least they are sushi rice and have been given the effort to seasoned properly with rice vinegar. The SPECIAL Tuna Belly nirigi sushi are priced at $2.95 each, and to me it tasted sort of like the Aburi sushi from Miku but not quite there. It is too thin and not fatty enough considering is meat from the "belly." And in terms of price, I'd rather order another piece of Salmon nirigi. The Saba nirigi we ordered were very stenchy in its own aroma; salty and fatty, but weren't cut with razor-sharp edges. The bomb of the night (not in a good way) was the Mega Tower which was piled high from the bottom to the top: mashed potato mixed with diced shirmp, imitation crab mixture, assorted hamachi, tuna, and WILD salmon pieces...all covered with a creamy sauce and crowed with pink salmon roe. The salad around it was dressed in the SPECIAL SAUCE (well of course). By probably the third dish I had enough of the "mayonase" and the sweet and hot spicy sauce, and it was an expedition to scrap the last piece off of the Mega Tower dish. What mystified me was how did the chef manage to make all the dishes taste almost the same? I give it that the restaurant has given everything a lot of attention to details, but the dishes were decorated over the top and the flavors were in supreme excess that the delicacy of a light Japanese meal is lost in the fusion transformation.
