Alaska roll - unlike some of the Alaska rolls you get elsewhere, this one doesn't come with a sauce on top. What it does come with is fresh salmon! I had a little time to grab a quick late lunch before heading back to my company for a meeting so decided to give this place another go because the last time wasn't so great. Easily got street pay parking outside the restaurant, didn't want to circle to its back parking lot. The waitress greeted and seated me promptly as the restaurant wasn't busy and the restaurant definitely needed some better ventilation. Here were the food I ordered; 1. Assorted sashimi. The portion was okay, the fish selection could be a bit better, and the tuna and amaebi could be fresher for the price. 2. Miso soup. Was nice and hot, that was good! This was a complimentary soup, thank you and much appreciated! 3. Tamago, salmon toro, tuna toro, chopped scallop, tsubugai nigiris. Everything was tasty and fresh especially the tuna toro!! 4. Ikura nigiris. They weren't so fresh as you can tell by the pic, I tried one or two eggs then didn't eat them, don't want to take the chance and get my stomach mad at me. Overall, the service was nice and friendly with a casual dining ambience. My first experience with this restaurant was at its Coquitlam location. Everything were okay but needed an improvement on the sushi rice; some part were slightly undercooked a bit and the sushi vinegar and seasoning were a bit off balance. Returned for lunch today and their service was acceptable for such a large party! My friend and i ordered the sashimi and kamamameshi set which came with appetizer sized sashimi (salmon, tuna and hokkaigi) as well as a chicken and veggie hot pot that was flavourful and very generous in portion! The pot itself takes 20-30 minutes but the sashimi, small salad and pickles come first so you dont feel like the wait is too long. We also got an alaska roll and negitoro roll, both well priced for the amount of filling. The rice was not bad this time BUT i did feel extremely thirsty after my meal here! Im not sure if it was the sushi rice or the rice pot but that is the reason for 4 stars. Overall, great prices for tasty Japanese food and some interesting choices! read more

I am very sad that every time I go there it just gets worse and worse. It's still a good valued sushi restaurant with a big menu but the quality of sushi is no longer better than other places. I have been going there since the owner had a tiny to go sushi place called sushi house. There's still a sushi house in Richmond, of course a different owner but they might be better. The presentation of sushi is no longer beautiful, with deformed nigiri and sloppy rolled sushi that falls apart. We ordered toro and they were not even toro, chu toro at its best but really not belly enough to call it toro. Other good restaurant would not define that as toro. I would prefer real toro even if I have to pay double the price. So embarrassing that I took guests from Japan saying they are the best sushi restaurant. They were not impressed at all. Their special assorted nigiri has farmed salmon and masago!! Why can't they put local salmon and salmon roe instead, to call it tokujyou!! Does tokujyo sushi ever have mayonnaised chopped scallop? Do not bother ordering assorted, just order what you know is good otherwise they are just fillers like boiled surf clam. Only tokujyo quality was sea urchin and maybe prawns. no toro either, it was just regular tuna. Also one of my sushi had a bone in it so be careful feeding sushi to your little kids, they should never have bones but they may have it.. My recent visit, my brother in law from LA was craving uni, we called ahead of time to make sure they had some. We waited about 20 minutes before getting seated. A nice place in the High Gate are. The rolls are good, service is decent and the prices are really good. The portions are average. My friend and I ordered the garden salad, dragon roll, spider roll and aburi chopped scallop roll. The prices for these are lower than other places and just as good. It was just right after we had hiked Quarry Rock and wanted to grab some food. Also I had beach volleyball later so I needed some food before a 2hr volleyball session. When we were there, it wasn't busy but it was only 4:30-5pm. There were lots of people ordering takeout though so it was still busy that way. We ordered the fire roll, mexican roll, oyster motoyaki, sashimi salad, salmon sashimi, and a fish which I can not remember the name right now. For some reason, I just know what kind of sushi dinner I'm going to have when I see their garden salad and dressing. The dressing is a thicker creamy dressing with wonton chips on top of the sashimi salad. Big portion. Fire Roll- The spicy sauce for this roll is sweet thai chilli sauce, I don't know how I feel about that. I didnt eat it after one piece. Mexican Roll- I got this without the cream cheese. This was suppose to have spicy sauce, but not sure where it is? But if their spicy sauce is sweet thai chili sauce, I'd eat it without. Ate more of this than the fire roll. The price and food were alright. So did the service. I had been here eating dinner before. The environment was not very comfortable. It was packed and the environment was kind of messy. Servers were rushing to clean the tables and bring in the customers. Tables were not completely clean (kind of sticky or greasy). The service was not good when the restaurant was fully of customers. The tray I ordered that used to be good is terrible. Sloppy, tonnes of rice to fill up the volume, and quality of the seafood lower. Whenever I am in Burnaby, I always try to come by. This time I ordered the signature Kamameshi dinner set along with the lobster sashimi. The Kamameshi dinner order comes loaded with tempura, sashimi, salad, not just 1, but 2 kinds of soup - miso and chawanmushi. The lobster is later cooked in miso soup mixed with udon for a nice finish. I really wish there are more Japanese restaurants like this one... oh yeah, the beloved chef and owner, Nao opened his second new shop in Coquitlam, so he is usually at that location, but I think the quality standard is still good here. It's my second time here and I think I'm in love!!! There's an abundance of Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver (we are so spoiled), typically not run by Japanese people but Nao is! So you know they probably know what they're doing! I had an amazing experience yesterday! My mom and I ordered the "Lobster Sashimi & Miso Soup Combo" and added udon to it. the whole meal between the 2 of us was about $38 and boy was it worth every penny!!!! First off, I've never had Lobster Sashimi, it is excellent! and of course the regular Salmon, Tuna, etc, i think they had Escargot in there, and some other fish, all delicious!!! After you finish that course, they will take the left over Lobster and steam it into a miso soup for you! we added udon to it for more substance and i definitely suggest that! Came here with my boyfriend and his family. I read about Nao from a Japanese pamphlet, and decided to come here. We ordered the saba battera, the asari kamameshi, assorted sashimi, dragon roll, and the ichi roll. I was so excited to see battera, or pressed sushi on the menu, as well as kamameshi. These are two things that my grandma made or bought for us quite often. The Saba battera tasted incredible; it reminded me of the ones that I had in Tokyo. The saba was well salted, along with the kombu. The kamameshi was seasoned well and is definitely my favorite dish by far. The ichi roll was interesting; there was tamago on the outside and overall tasted more sweet. I will most definitely be back to try more authentic dishes. read more

In love with the food! This place has some pretty amazing sushi roll creations. All the ones I've tried so far are good. The quality is fresh. The presentation is nice. The ginger are in jars on your table, which is brilliant. I always have a thing against the ginger sauce soaking my sushi rice when it's placed together on the same plate. The only reason I didn't rate this restaurant 5 stars was the service. The service is definitely slow and although the servers are nice and polite, we had to ask twice for low sodium soy sauce and twice for cold water. As a few others have mentioned, takeout appears to be horrendously slow, especially during peak times. We ordered on a Friday night on several occasions (the most recent being a few days ago) - from the time I ordered until the time I received my food - 1 hour 45 minutes. I get that places may get busy, but this seems a bit extreme. If they are this busy, there's a clear staffing issue that needs to be addressed. With the long waits, it appears there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of coordination with the preparation of the food. A few of our appetizers we had ordered clearly must have been made at the beginning of that 1:45mins and left to sit as they were cold (gyoza) and soggy (agedashi tofu) while waiting for the other food to be completed. If you're going to make people wait this long, you may as well make the hot/fried food closer to the time you're handing over the food to the customer. The food itself generally is fairly decent - having been here on several occasions. Pricing is also fairly good for what you get for "budget sushi". However, more attention needs to be paid on punctuality, especially for takeout orders, and some better communication with customers if you can't meet the expected order ready times. read more

The place is very convenient for me, as it's located in the Highgate area beside a very residential neighborhood. Nothing here really stood out to me although I've tried a variety of things. Then when you're done, they take the lobster back to the kitchen to make a soup enough for 2. Just pick your noodle! I've only started to go to this place a month ago. Now practically going at least once a week. I'm not sure if it's a regular item but they have aji (horse markerel) sashimi. Besides the typical sashimi part, they present it with the rest of the body. After you finish the sashimi they deep fry it, covered with a peppery batter, and serve with a lemon wedge. Squeeze the lemon on the fish creates an awesome lemon pepper deep fried fish! It's amazing! The bones become so tender one can eat the whole thing even the head! This place use to be on top of our list whenever we crave for sushi but don't feel like going far. They offer seared/aburi sushi and I'm always a big fan of that. The business went into renovation about a year ago then had some down time due to quality/service change. A few of my favourite items were also deleted from their menu at that time which made me a bit skeptical about going back for a long long time. However, my husband and I decided to give it one more try today and I'm so happy that we had made that decision. We arrived at lunch time and the place was just about to get busy. We got seated and served with tea right a way. As I went through their menu, I was impressed that all of my fabourate items (aburi rolls)were back and there are quite a lot of new items got added too. We ordered some nigiri and selected a few to be seared for extra charge of $0.2/each( worth it). The nigiri are reasonable priced, or somewhat cheaper than many japenses restaurant. We ordered: Salmon belly nigiri $1.8 x 4 Salmon nigiri $1.5 x 2 Tobiko with quail egg (one of my hubby's fav) $? x 2 Tamago nigiri $1 x 2 Unagi Kamameshi $12 Aburi chopped scallop roll $7.5 Aburi spicy salmon roll $6.5 All sushi are nicely made especially the seared salmon belly nigiri. I love it so much that I ended up ordering another 2. Overall, I'm impressed with the experience though the kamameshi came a bit late and there were only 3 pieces of unagi. But the wait is worth it as the rice was cooked raw in the stone pot so the flavours of all toppings get absorbed well. Also, the waitress nicely warned us about the cooking time when taking the order. I'm glad this place is finally picking up its standard and got back to where it was before. Dropped by Nao Sushi on Kingsway for lunch, it was fairly busy but we were able to be seated right away. We ordered the salmon sashimi, the zaru soba combo which comes with tempura, the house roll, two tamago nigiri and a toro nigiri. The zaru soba is really good, the noodles are always so refreshing. The batter on the tempura is light and not too greasy either. They make their tamago in house here, so if you like tamago we would recommend it. All the other sushi dishes were pretty good, nothing to complain about.Something to note, their house rolls are massive so you will be good getting a half order, which is equivalent to ordering a full house roll anywhere else. I don't care what you say about raw fish or raw food, get the lobster sashimi! Yes, get the lobster sashimi. Super fresh, no iify "weird raw food" flavor that people say about raw fish, since, lobster is a seafood. But also, because it is super fresh, as close as u can get from catching it fresh from the ocean. They also use the lobster to make an udon soup, which is packed with freshness and flavor. We also had another sashimi platter with the lobster, and it was just amazing. If you are one of those who like "authentic" and/or "traditional" sushi, then for sure, you would appreciate Nao Sushi's efforts to make good quality food. They also have the everyday yummy stuff you love from sushi garden as well, but their target market is quite different. Go there for good quality, comfortable atmosphere (yes, you can sit and chat there for awhile, which is a huge plus). As I arrived with party for ten, I was seated at a table for six and we had to wait till other tables opened up when seated to make it bigger before all other guests arrived. I thought the layout of seating could be better, and reserved could have been handled better. It seemed like a large variety of goodies to order from. But as I ordered the Alaskan roll and dragon roll - it's good to say they were good, my ebi sunomono however was - off - taste wise, something was but I can't put my finger on it. My friend felt that way about their oyster motoyaki - as it has been a long time since I've ate it, I can honestly say I don't know if that tasted off or not.
