Met a friend for lunch here today. We were greeted promptly and were able to get seated immediately. The restaurant interior is small but cute and super clean. And our server was very attentive, filling our teacups without us asking and taking our orders and bringing our meals in good time. We were both impressed by their "lunch deals" on the back of the menu. They have quite a few options, most for $12.95. And it's a LOT of food. So... I think that's the best deal offered, for sure. My friend ordered the California roll lunch and her meal came with many Cali rolls, some maki rolls, a miso soup (which she commented was one of the best miso soups she's had. Not salty, but well flavored), and maybe one other component (I'm not sure). I ordered the the Udon lunch deal and it came with WAY too much food for me: 5 pieces of tempura (two prawns, 3 various vegetable tempura, all perfectly cooked and not greasy at all. Super good), a HUGE bowl of udon noodle soup (I honestly didn't eat one bite of this soup as it was hot out and I can't have hot soup on a hot day, and it was SO big, I just could't!), AND 6 or 8 pieces of rainbow sushi (these were fresh and good, but not the best sushi I've had as the rice was perhaps too firm and it just had a different texture than rainbow sushi I've had in other restaurants. But it was okay). That said, it was a very good meal, with a lot of food, for a reasonable price. Here's why I'm taking off one star: I wanted to bring home the rainbow sushi (I only ate 2 pieces, so there were a lot left. I love leftovers! Less cooking for dinner, yeah!). When I asked for a take-out box, the server said that'd be an extra $1. What? I know it's just a dollar, but it's the principle. I have SO many take-out boxes at home. Had I known there'd be a charge, I'd have brought one with me, as I do an extra tote (I always keep a Yelp tote in my purse! Yeah, Yelp swag!). Anyhow, I get the extra charge for bags, but now take-out boxes too? C'mon! I order take-out sushi from a nearby sushi joint regularly and I don't get charged extra for the cartons they pack my meals in. Same when I get poke and other meals. This is the first time I've been charged to get a take-out box. SO .... if you plan on coming here, bring your own bag and bring your own containers if you suspect you might want to bring your leftovers home. read more

Back for dinner tonight. They have more special rolls on their menu, which are the same ones that are available at their Irashai Grill location in downtown. We tried the Summer Roll...with prawn tempura, cucumber, mayo, masago with marinated tuna and avocado on top, and the Wild Fish Roll, with salmon, tuna and green onion, topped with hamachi and avocado. These were unique rolls and each of them had its distinct flavour. I liked the Summer Roll more; the marinated tuna and the avocado goes really well together. We get the other usuals- ebi mayo, dynamite roll, chopped scallop roll. Again, this place has never failed on us. Consistently good food. read more

Food is okay, but the rolls are overpriced for the size. Sushi rice is a bit hard. We have been in two times, and the service has been absolutely abysmal each time. Unfriendly servers, long waits to be seated, no drink refills, etc. Found 2 hairs in my oyakodon and the waitress looked annoyed and flicked the hairs onto the ground behind me, no apology. read more

No ginger included. $20 for 6 thinnnnn slices. Not listed on their menu how many pieces would be included. If you are gonna charge this much then have some better chopsticks as well. Average taste too I could definitely get this same quality at other locations. This place is a joke. read more

Since my fave place is still on vacation, I decided to give this restaurant a try. It's been here for years. For the sushi snobs, this is run by Chinese servers and chef and it's a little pricy. Looking around, the food and presentation is quite large and they do have a loyal following. I ordered Lunch Box A, which has a nice mix of their hot food. $15 Miso Soup - served hot and very flavorful, not the typical Miso that gets dole out from a giant luke warm pot. Gyoza - skin nice and thin, pan fried nicely Ebi Sunomono - nice and refreshing, not too vinegary at all Chicken Teriyaki - nicely done on a bed of veggie, asking for Teriyaki sauce on the side really show the difference in how they present this. Rolls - Salmon, Tuna and California.. All on the small side. Bonus point is that ALL SALMON in this restaurant is Wild. The quality of food is good but the price is quite high to make this a regular spot. read more

I decided to come here on a whim walking home from work since it's the closest sushi place to my apartment. Am I glad I did? Sure. I don't regret this meal. It's definitely not the best sushi I've ever had but not the worst either. I ordered the California combo because I liked the idea of a mango California roll. There wasn't exactly any mango in it - or maybe there was? Just a sweet brown leathery bit instead of avocado. Was that supposed to be mango? Maybe I just don't know enough about sushi. The miso was pretty good and I like to think you can judge a place by how good the miso is, but lately I've been proven wrong. Oh well! The service wasn't too great either, I walked in and had to find my own menu and then was never really sat, just sort of picked a seat to sit in myself and was met with a "okay, you sit there". The lady was pretty sweet but seemed distracted. It must have been a busy day. TL;DR this place is good, but not the best in Kerrisdale. Walk up a block for Asa Sushi (decent) or Ajisai (phenomenal) if you want some good Vancouver sushi. read more

Hunger brought us here. This was my first time and the taste of the food is good, but it is on the pricier side. I had the stone bowl which was $15.50. For this price, it would have been nice for them to bring out the bowl and mix it up in front of you so you get a sense of the before and after. But the server did bring it out to us post-mixed. I was hoping for larger beef slices and it was more like minced meat compared to the AAA beef that was in the description so you could not really tell. The sauce was good which gave it a lot of flavor. We have a few pieces of nigiri (4 pieces) and a fancier roll. The total came to about $41 tax in plus tip. On a side note, they only accept credit cards if it is over $15. The service could use some improvement. Overall, this place is in a nice location which is where they get most of their traffic. read more

Fresh sushi ! Very good food, great service and polite staff! I'll return. Of note: and speaking to staff integrity- I inadvertently left my wallet there and didn't notice until I returned home. I immediately called the restaurant minutes after they found it - the staff were willing to drop it off at my residence a fair distance away. I insisted that they don't put themselves out and that I'd be there to grab it. I offered to leave some money for their troubles and they refused. Long story short- great service integrity and friendliness read more

Small little sushi restaurant in the heart if kerrisdale! Tried the summer roll along with the salmon sashimi. The salmon sashimi practically melts in your mouth! It was super fresh. I only got 4 small pieces so in my opinion even though it was delicious it was a bit on the expensive side. The summer roll was delicious and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. The food was great but the service was bad. The server was not attentive and seemed annoyed when I asked her for a glass of water. It's a small restaurant and I can understand that when it's busy things take time. But there were only 4 other tables that were occupied still my food took a good 40 mins. The price of food is a bit on the higher side, but worth it because the sushi is super fresh and is made from good quality ingredients. read more

This restaurant has seriously gone downhill. Stopped in Saturday afternoon for lunch. The woman who greeted us was unfriendly and cold. We ordered toro and salmon sashimi which was dry and tasteless. Next came three rolls, real crab California, chopped scallop and an avocado roll. The rice used for all three was chewy and tasted old and the crab and scallop was almost non existent. We couldn't help but wonder if there were new owners because Irashai used to be amazing. Safe to say we won't be coming back. read more

This is one of our favourite sushi restaurants in the city! It's a pretty small restaurant but I know we have made reservations before so do that or get it to go and it's perfect! A few of our faves: Summer Roll Mini Sukiyaki - comes in a cute pot with fire underneath to keep it warm. Shredded beef, glass noodles, tofu, veggies Chicken Teriyaki - Classic but they make it really well Baby Hamachi sashimi - this was our first time trying it and it was really good. Practically melts in your mouth! Salmon sashimi - another classic, super fresh The prices can be on the higher side, but worth it for super fresh and good quality sushi, sashimi and cooked Japanese food. Tip #1: They get their shipments of fish on Tuesdays so if you want the freshest selections, go for dinner on a Tuesday night! Tip #2: They offer a 10% discount when you pay in cash read more

There are 8 or more sushi choices in Kerrisdale but I keep going back to Irashai for lunch. Why? The Chicken Katsudon. If you are ever in need of a warm hug inside of your belly, look no further. This bowl of rice, chicken, onion, sauce and soft egg is the answer. Other than that I recommend the Rocker Roll, The White Tuna Nigiri and the Wild Salmon. read more

Came here with a friend after work for a quick and easy dinner last week. It's in his neighborhood and the food was good he says. First off, I always judge a Japanese restaurant by the nationality of the person making my sushi. It was quite the disappointment when I found out they were Chinese. Immediately I was not expecting good sushi. Yeah judge me all you want, I'm a food rascist! Anyways, gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised! Good solid rolls, the fish was fresh, I ended up being happily fed. Their fare was pretty standard and even though the dinner was just last week, I can't even remember exactly what we ordered but I can tell you the rolls were tasty and the oysters were actually unexpectedly fanfastically fresh. I probably won't be back because it's not in my neighborhood but if I'm in the area and want decent sushi, I'll know where to go. read more

In the heart of Kerrisdale. Place fills up fast. The bento boxes have strange combinations and not many boxes to pick from. Service was actually pretty good. The waitress kept refilling out tea. They do take credit card but purchase has to be over $15. read more

This is possibly the best sushi in Vancouver. I've knocked a star because portions have decreased in the past year and they cut corners in packaging. I ordered takeout during my recent visit and hot items were in the same bag as cold items. Miso soup on top of sashimi? No. Given the pricing, it's absolutely not acceptable. 10% off orders over $50 if paying in cash. read more

Recommend the red Dragon Roll; good size portion of unagi eel, avocado, & their special house sauce. comes with the white ginger, so that's always a good indication that this resto doesn't cheap out. Tomago they make in-house, so it was good, not great, not sweet enough for my liking, still go w/ Samurai on Cambie st. for that. think others would like it still. Came here on Provence owner's recommendation so you can't doubt a highly successful chef like JF ;) good service too. too bad they close for a few hours between lunch and dinner. plenty of parking on this end of 41st. and it's quieter than near Arbutus. definitely a fast repeat here. read more

Peppercorn tuna roll....yummm! Soft shelled crab...drool... This place has plenty of specialty rolls they make that we enjoy, and the standard Japanese fare that we all know is good, too. Nice, well kept Japanese diner (2-3 store fronts next to the CIBC) Service is good and friendly. Prices are higher than most of the other joints in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood we've tried (Bento boxes are pricey) - still, we keep coming back to this diner for the specialty items for lunch. read more

I am surprised when I see somebody else would actually give this place 3 stars or more. You might think that It was just my bad day; however I thought that's not the only reason. I used to went to this place about more than several years ago as I love their spicy tuna don. However, I stopped visiting because it was just far from my apartment. I moved into another apartment recently which is very close to this restaurant. So I just decided to give it a try on my way home. I ordered Sushi Combo D $22.50. What would you normally expect from a combo that worth $22.5 when it states 9 pcs of sushi? Since I have tried Ajisai, Asa and other sushi restaurants, so I had my hope up. Guess what did I have? tekka maki, 1 salmon, 1 tuna, 1 frozen hokigai, 1 tamago, 1 sweeten tofu wrap, 1 FAKE crab meat, 1 saba, and 2 more i totally forget what that is because it is not something special or anything i remember to be tasty. I was stunned when i see the sweeten tofu wrap and the fake crab meat.. are you kidding me? How can that worth $22.50? HA, NO WONDER IT DOESN'T TELL YOU WHAT TYPE OF SUSHI IT HAS ON THE MENU. Not only the price is so rip off, the sushi isn't that fresh at all. Why would I pay a $22.50 for a frozen hokigai? I love saba to be honest, but their saba just taste .. BAD. By the way, that's just my first time experience. I tried not to be bias. I thought that the chef might be just not in a good mood to give me some good sushi. So, I was stupid enough to give it another try. This time I ordered chirashi don, other sashimi, and the clam soup. Again, the chirashi don just doesn't taste right Not only the sashimi wasn't fresh, they lack of variety of sashimi. The clam soup was soso. The clam was overcooked. At this point, I start to think that I am expecting too much. I ordered 2 Ikura sushi, but it only came 1. At the end, 2 showed up on my bill .. YEY! Total came up to 2 BAD EXPERIENCE. I would rather walk a little bit further to Asa sushi or Ajiisai next time. Come to think of it. How can this sushi place still operating? read more

I love this place. I actually drive far to get their aburi salmon sushi. If you liked pressed sushi from minami but don't want to pay the price come down to this place. I have no photos as I'm usually way to excited scarfing down my food. I usually order pressed sushi and chicken teriyaki. And that's a must get too coming here. It's skin is cooked to crispy perfection. Once and a while I would get oysters too. It's my go to sushi spot in arbutus. Parking is street paid parking, and it's a smaller restaurant. I just love this place! Don't ask questions just go and get your indulge on here!! read more

I went to school in Vancouver and this is where I came almost every lunch break! The service is not great, a little rude at times but the food is always exceeding my standards. Their summer roll is to DIE for, and their tuna sashimi has me drooling just talking about it. This restaurant isnt completely authentic as it does use spagehtti noodles for their yaki soba but none the less its one of my favorites. The portions are not huge, and the prices are a little high so I usually only end up ordering one or two things. read more

If you prefer slightly finer Japanese this side of Kerrisdale but aren't prepared to shell out for Shota, Irashai's your spot. Their rolls are solid, while the oyako don doesn't stray too far from being authentic. And heck, even the ramen's delish (but at $12/bowl, Jinya definitely makes more sense). So do come here for decent Chinese-prepared Japanese, or head over to Asa for Korean style instead. Your choice. read more

Sushi and sashimi are really fresh, though the service isn't great. There were definitely communication challenges. There was also one person serving the entire restaurant, so getting help was really challenging! Also getting a cup of green tea took ages as there was one person that served everyone. For the price, I really hope that the service improve, as it was really challenging just getting our order through correctly! Hopefully this place will listen to their customers more. read more

Although there are many in the area, Irashi is a great local sushi choice. Everything is fresh and delicious. On this particular meal, I had a small lunch of just miso soup, goma-ae salad and their Grilled eggplant with shrimp and miso sauce. All great! One of my companions had the Salmon Aburi sushi which also looked great and I will try next time. Total cost for me was a reasonable $20. read more

I have to say that my visit today to Irashai Sushi, I was not as impressed as my first. The food was great however the service was a little lacking today. Staff didn't seem too an the ball. What would have been a 4 star I feel I have to rate as a 3. read more

If you hate waiting for a table, come at around 5PM since this place fills up pretty quickly. So let's start with the food. The rolls are excellent - their real crab California roll and negitoro roll make me happy. The sashimi is fresh but the portion is disappointing (I wouldn't come here if I was only craving fish). Prawn tempura is excellent; I highly recommend the ebi mayo as the sauce and portion size are pretty darn good. The soup base for their udon is decent - nothing spectacular but above average. If you order the tempura udon, the tempura comes on the side with the dipping sauce, instead of all broken up and soggy in the soup. Overall, their dishes are tasty. Portion size is reasonable too unless you're ordering sashimi. Now the service.. My friend and I were starving when we came here for dinner today. After ordering 2 sashimi dishes and 2 rolls, my friend wanted to add udon as well. The waitress looked at us shocked, gasping, "what, udon too??" with a bit of snickering afterwards. I found it a bit offensive that she felt the need to guilt-trip us on how much we were ordering. I guess this is a good place to come if you're concerned about portion control. But besides that little comment, everything else went pretty smoothly. read more

Ordered take out and got the chicken karaage, mango veggie roll, spicy chopped scallop and spicy chopped tuna roll, all for $24 which I thought was on the pricey side but wouldn't mind if the taste and quality were on par. Of all 4 items, I'd only get the karaage again but for almost $8 I think there should be enough for 2 people. I guess their proprietary blend for spicy rolls is to add tempura flake which I find takes away from tasting or feeling the texture of the fish. It became more of a tempura roll that wasn't very spicy. I'd give this place another try but mainly only if I want hot food otherwise, I'd rather go down the street to Ajisai where I can get more than 3 rolls for $16 read more

What a rip off, for $28 I got so little food. The Dynamite roll was miniature and only 6 pieces, same with the California roll. I ordered the Nigiri Combo $28 for 6 pcs California roll and 6 mini Dynamite roll, 4 sushi and 6 Nigiri. Very disappointed! read more

Irashai Sushi - Almost too beautiful to eat... mmm - Japanese Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

In the most blunt way possible, while avoiding any unnecessary use of profanity and crude hostility, this restaurant is by far the most appallingly rude and terrible food establishment in the Greater Vancouver area. As a local Vancouverite, I've come to expect a higher quality of food and service when it comes to seafood and Japanese cuisine, whether it be a cheap all you can eat restaurant or a high end Izakaya, given the fact that there is the largest Asian population housed in the Lower Mainland, a competitive service economy in BC, and not to mention an abundant and affordable supply of seafood by being so close to the Pacific Coast. Irashai, while not particularly bad in terms of its food quality, prides itself on providing reasonably priced hand rolls to the surrounding Kerrisdale community. The rolls are fresh and most of its seafood, while being refrigerated/frozen packaged tastes like its fresh from the pond, which is definitely and impressive facet to find in terms of location and price. Furthermore, to follow with the previous posts, many of the rolls are unique and can't easily be obtained or made anywhere nearby without close experimentation or investigation. While that is all good and well, Irashai defeats its self-proclaimed title of sushi baron and even restaurant by its absolutely TERRIBLE service. Prior to setting foot into the establishment, I was told by at least 5 former patrons that the service was unbearable and that they were considering not even paying the bill and walking out on them. Now, usually with rants like that, any person would simply ignore the place and go try somewhere else, but determined I was to try to find out for myself just how bad it was..maybe exaggerations at best. NOPE While the restaurant itself was small and looks a bit crammed, the table and benches were spaced reasonably enough to fit about 20-25 people without much clamor. When I got in I was greeted by an Chinese woman who literally pointed at a corner table and yelled 'Go There!' to me in a scorning tone. At first, I didn't take this as an offense, as most people not bearing English as a mother tongue could mistakenly have tonal difficulty, but I soon found out that that wasn't the case. All the people who work there are Cantonese Chinese; I know because I am one. I've been raised in Hong Kong for 4 years prior to immigrating here and I can speak the language and understand the colloquialism of the language. Throughout my dinner, I heard the servers, hosts and cooks swear, at one another, make fun of the Caucasian patrons, and even call me a 'dark Filipino servant'. The food was served to me promptly but with a swift shove of the plate to my corner nook, having the soy sauce spill all over my lap. The server looked down at me and simply shrug and walked off before I could ask for a napkin. I pretended not to know what they were saying, given that they probably thought I wasn't a Chinese person, but given that a racial slur was thrown around in at their own business let alone in close quarters was not only daringly brave but grossly inappropriate. When the bill came, I felt compelled to deliver to them myself, wanting to complain to the woman at the till of the service I encountered. To my sheer amazement, the she grabbed the money tray from my hand, and asked why I tipped under 10% as if I had wronged her. Now you may think that this review is a bit subjective but let it be known that the whole reason why reviews are cast is to grab a full on mosaic of opinions to help customers. In no way was I arrogant or pompous when ordering nor was I in the restaurant at peak times where the service would be somewhat chaotic...quiet Tuesday night around 6 on an October night. Racist and arrogant, these people actually had me running out the door in a fit of anger. I think the reason they can even charge a little bit above $15 per person on a bill is because it's in Kerrisdale and they have exotic rolls. But the service is tremendously evil and quite frankly, bear a gruesome resemblance to a xenophobic hatred reminiscent of war torn countries which not only shames the Chinese race but also the restaurant business on Vancouver. These people deserve to be shut down. read more

It was a rainy Wednesday. I didn't feel like making lunch so we went out for late Lunch. My hubby didn't order because he had already eaten. We ordered the "Udon Lunch special" which I thought should be fool-proof to make (I am new to the area...). To my disappointment, the tempuras were very greasy with oil dripping around the veggies when they were presented in a basket with oil soaking paper. The batter around the veggies were excessively thick that i had to peel them off to eat the veggies within. The BC roll came with was an "epic". My husband and I both tried a piece and found that the salmon skin was gone and a bit fishy... We talked to the waiter, but he didn't even listen to us and our concern. The hygiene and freshness of food in the restaurant weren't something he wanted to hear about. He kept arguing with us that he could make us another one while we said what was the point when it's GONE!!! We even offered to pay the difference to get another type of roll and it took us forever to get it clear to him that we WOULDN'T take the same roll again!!! That was a tense and tiring lunch. He obviously didn't want his customer to leave happy... didn't take responsibility of his food quality. We will never go back again!! Good luck if u give this restaurant a chance... read more

Simply delicious. Quick service. Good prices. Been here three times. Plenty more in the future.

The Chinese-operated Irashai Sushi has some delicious special rolls, and the quality of their regular rolls and cooked items is decent. Terrible service especially this asian girl with short hair. She is so rude to customers.

Good quality sushi but the roll sizes are very small. Same goes for their sashimi slices.

Great sushi and hot food selection, even though the place is run by Chinese not Japanese as some food snobs would point out. Their teriyaki chicken is the best in town. Crispy skin, full of flavor and the veggies are of good variety, not the typical bean spouts with cheap cabbage. So why do I only rate it 4 stars and not 5? Their service sucks! They have the rudest servers in town. Funnily enough, their delivery guy (a big guy) is the most courteous. Yes inspiite of this I will go back, just for their food, not for the service. read more

I finally had the chance to go to this place after their latest "revision." The store looks much more modern than the old one. The store is pretty small so there was a small lineup at night. Probably one of the best sushi places I've been to. Great taste with great presentation. I come to Kerrisdale once a year to visit family and I always go to Irashai Sushi on every trip. I wanted to try something different this time so I asked the server for suggestions and she said the Hawaiian roll and the Summer roll. Wish I had tried the summer roll because when I tried the Hawaiian roll, it was absolutely delicious. When I saw that mango was in the roll, I was a little doubtful. But when it came out, the mango was thinly sliced and it wrapped around something that I can't remember what it was. Everything was very flavourful, loved it! read more
