I placed an uber eats order from them this evening. My order was around $80 and let me just say that money went in the garbage. We ordered $20 sockeye salmon sashimi that was slimey, discoloured, and rubbery... clearly old. We received prawn tempura and yam tempura that had been double fried and pretty much brown in colour.... The gyoza tasted like plastic... it was even properly crunchy it was bubbly and stale.... The rolls were not good either and stuck together... seemed to be stale as well. Very disappointing and ruined our family dinner night for sure. read more

This is a really cute restaurant in Burnaby. They do have dine in and their meals are actually quite reasonably priced. Although with the cost, comes smaller portions (or atleast I've noticed for the sushi rolls compared to other sushi places I've been to). Having said that, they do have additional charges such as an extra charge for extra sauce or different sauce, or if you are dining in but want a box to take the remainder of your food home - they charged $0.50 for a box. read more

Ordered the sashimi bento box. Miso soup is quite tasty. Salad is pretty tasty as well, with the avocado slices as well as the sweet cucumber dressing. Great Japanese spot in the Brentwood area. Wide variety of menu items and affordable pricing too. You take a seat, browse the menu then order and pay at the counter. They will bring your orders to your table. Overall, we had a pleasant first experience and paid less than $40. We ordered the following: chicken teri bento box, chicken teriyaki don and Jessica roll. I enjoyed my bento box while the hubby enjoyed his teriyaki don and Jessica roll. Do note that the chicken teriyaki is lightly breaded and deep fried before doused with sauce. I had to peel of the breading as I try my best to avoid gluten. Portions were quite big and sushi (inc. sushi in the bento) tasted fresh. Update: We've been to Joy Sushi 3 times in the past two weeks (one was for pick-up) and food is consistently good. The hubby loves their chicken teriyaki and has ordered it every time (yes, he is a creature of comfort HAHA). On the other hand, I've tried their chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki and salmon teriyaki and all three were great. This is my go to neighbourhood sushi spot. The bento boxes are delicious and all come with miso soup. The teriyaki chicken is fresh and the tempura box is nice and crispy. The rolls aren't as big as sushi garden but the quality and flavours are excellent. The prices are affordable as well. They are also very speedy with service. Good prices for decent sushi in the Burnaby area! This place is really small but they had very good prices for special rolls, bento boxes and cooked dishes. We ordered a daily bento and changed the cucumber roll to a negitoro with a small add on price. The beef was a little bit tough and sparse but overall, it was not bad for the price. Unfortunately, the tuna was a little fishy but not bad! The special rolls were the best as they were well priced and tasty. The scallop tataki and tuna tataki were both yummy and their john roll was a good melange of flavours! We got a final chicken katsu don and there was a nice large chicken cutlet with a good balance of rice ration. Overall, the prices are good but their fish quality is not the most amazing. Love supporting local businesses especially during the last two crazy years. Joy sushi is a tiny restaurant on Dawson in the Brentwood area. The prices are average compared to most restaurants. I've only tried the sushi here, and was a bit disappointed on the quality and size of the sushi rolls. Their rolls tasted okay, but are about the size of a kappa roll... which is pretty tiny! Also the BC roll was mostly dry salmon meat, when it's supposed to be crispy salmon skin! Not somewhere I will be back to visit. For similar prices, and larger sushi i would recommend just sticking with Sushi Garden! read more

There are fewer than 10 small tables, but it wasn't too busy when we went around noon on a Friday. Yam cream cheese roll: creamy, crunchy, and slightly sweet. Yum. Tuna gommae: love that the sauce is not too sweet (I hate sugary sauces)! Fresh spinach with good tuna. I would order this again. Toro and wild salmon nigiri: good quality for the price. Recently order from here via Uber Eats. Extremely disappointed. The salmon don has paper thin slices of salmon on top, max 5-6 pcs. For a similar price to the salmon sashimi you'd expect a similar amount of salmon. I called and was told there is less salmon because there is extra cost to the rice and veggies (if you can call paper thin cucumber slices and tiny pieces of pickled radish veggies). Cute sushi joint located in Brentwood. Pleasantly suprised how fresh their sushi and sashimi were. I really enjoyed their chicken teriyaki. Not your typical teriyaki; the chicken was breaded and tasted like a tonkatsu..yummy! The salad tasted unique. They added avocado on the salad with light seasoning. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I think the only issue is finding parking and parking around this area is metered (unless you come around 8:00 PM then it's free). Just had our second take out order. We've been eating sushi at least once per week for over 30 years. Did not order during the whole Covid and finally tried a big takeout after a 5 month hiatus. We figured to try a new place. Both times we ordered 3 party trays for pick up. Both meals were 5 stars. The combination of quality-variety-price make this a real good spot. The Great Joy party tray (is actually 2 trays) and makes an awesome meal as it offers variety for everyone. The quality of the pieces is there. Hokkigai is juicy, salmon is red, scallop chops are loaded, tuna is not fishy smelling. The rolls are different and taste unique from one another. Most importantly, the rice is good. Someone in that kitchen knows what they're doing. The Crispy Joy roll is gone in 30 seconds at our table. Next time we are ordering another one on the side. Had slightly higher expectations of this place, but it turned out just average. Maybe it's what I ordered- I honestly kind of regret not just going along with a bento or some good old fashioned nigiri. My order- the fish cutlet set- was just... Boring. I don't know how else to describe it. Believe it or not the best part of it was the salad. The biggest problem was that the only sauce for both the fish and the croquette was kewpie Mayo. After a few notes, it just felt like a Mayo coma. There was no lemon to cut acidity, and the salad wasn't enough for the huge pile of fish. I ended up just getting half of it taken out because I couldn't handle any more Mayo for the day. The miso soup was weak and watery. Do not recommend. Salad on the other hand, was good. The dressing was delightfully tangy and I liked the avocado and tomato that came with it. My advice is to just lay it back on the Mayo. Make some more sauces. It can't be that hard. read more

Awful service. Has one or two decent take out. However, I paid 8.50 plus tax and received this. I arrived back to work and opened up my takeout container and couldn't not believe it. I usually don't complain but felt like I had to. Gave them a quick call and said that this wasn't what I expected. They mentioned that the tobiko is sprinkled like that for decoration. NO. The menu clearly stated that it is topped with Tobiko. The sushi was falling apart and I just couldn't eat it. I called if they could just remake it and they offered me a refund. They told me I could just toss it- which I did. And they called back to tell me to return the sushi (during covid). I could hear the owners in the background refusing to give me a refund. Clearly Joy's is used to serving take away rather than sit down customers, but the sushi is still delicious, as is their sashimi. However, it's not a place one necessarily decides to sit down and absorb the atmosphere, which is neither eclectic nor offensive but just plain. Nonetheless, the quality of the fish is really great and I'm sure the regulars periodically entering the establishment who clearly the staff knew understand the benefits of Joy's. So take away, gleeful on the expectation of wonderful sushi delights at your your home table. Never ordering at this restaurant again!! I ordered a spicy salmon don for take out, it costed me $9.71. It was 90% rice, 5% salmon, and 5% veggies. The salmon sashimi was the thinnest I've ever seen! There were 6 thin pieces of salmon sashimi (1/8" thick) which equivalents to one single slice of salmon sashimi you would get anywhere else. Normally, spicy salmon sashimi comes mixed with the spicy sauce but oddly not at this restaurant. The spicy sauce was separated in a small plastic container. I would not recommend going to this restaurant. They rip their customers off like no other! read more

Brand new place or at least brand new to me. This is very close to the train station. I came here before eating dinner at another either because sushi is more a dietary compliance where I was supposed to go for a friends birthday. I wanted to make sure that I was fed and I was healthy compared to where were supposed to go. I got my usual avocado roll and fried tempura. It wasn't busy and the service was a bit slow but I managed OK because I planned at least 40 minutes and advance to when I was supposed to meet up just in case I would plant been terms.
