Stopped by mid week for lunch. This time around opted for the Roll Combo, salmon sashimi and the deep fried soft shell crab. The rolls were ok and the salmon was great...love the deep colour. The presentation of the soft shell crab was great but I found it quite bland and greasy. The service was good and our teas were regularly refilled. It was still a positive food experience. read more

Average no-frills sushi restaurant. The service was very brisk which is not inherently a bad thing but not what I'm used to at Japanese restaurants. It was all fast, but no extra niceties. I ordered the tofu box. It included the usual elements of a vegetarian bento box and all were standard. Maybe a little plain. Not much else to say about it. The one thing that was remarkable was the price for this full-sized bento was only $11.95. Really affordable! If your priorities are getting a basic good meal at a great price and/or getting in and out fast, this is the place for you. If you want some flair to the food and more personal service, this may not be the best choice, but I will acknowledge that the sushi menu had some more interesting choices so maybe the sushi is a different story. read more

We tried Hime as a recommendation and we're so glad we did! The seating area is tiny, with around 8 tables, we were lucky to have a table available around 5:30 on a weekday. I would not recommend parties larger than 4 here unless you are prepared to wait for multiple tables to open. Service was quick and friendly for our party of 4. We ordered a variety of dishes from tempura, rolls, sashimi and handrolls. My party can definitely eat a lot of Japanese food and ordered enough to be full, for a little over $100 we were very happy with the portions and food quality. We will definitely be back when we're in town. read more

Got three rolls for delivery and we thought that they were okay with a rice that was not flavoured quite right and was slightly heavy on the rice. We went with two special rolls, both with a california base and one with torched salmon, one with torched tuna. It was my error in ordering two that were so similar but I appreciated how they didnt drown the rolls in sauce. The negitoro roll was as expected and my favourite thing about this order was the very reasonable prices for rolls among the many places with rising prices! The rolls were under $13 each which is extremely hard to find in Vancouver and based on that alone, I would consider returning for another order. read more

I use to come to Hime Sushi (their other location) a lot when going to university in the area. After having not been here for almost a decade, I was in the area and decided to get a salmon and avocado roll and R got a tuna and avocado roll. I thought there was a bit too much rice on the rolls. Overall thought they were only okay and didn't find them to be anything special. read more

Not my first time here but for some reason it was worse than when I last remembered it.. We came here on a late Monday night wanting to order a few things to share. I remember I came here a few years ago but I only ever tried their prawn tempura and it was decent. But these dishes we ordered that night were less than mediocre to say the least. But at least they look nice on camera? Overall I felt that this place was overpriced for the quality. We felt a little bit cheated at the end of our meal that everything was less than mediocre but the prices were a bit higher. I wouldn't come again but at least we know for next time. SALMON BATTERA OSHI SUSHI This was the prettiest but also the worst one we ordered. The salmon pieces on top were soo hard and dry. The rice was also extremely hard and dry. In the middle of the rice they put cream cheese in it... which I never heard of oshi sushi having cream cheese in it. It was not tasty and overpriced ($13-14). Tasteless and dry unfortunately:( I recommend to avoid. FIRE DRAGON ROLL This wasn't bad and was a chef's special roll on the menu. The sauce was decent but it didn't taste anything special. TAKOYAKI This was actually pretty decent and yummy. Big chunks of octopus and extremelyyy hot inside the middle so be careful! ANAKE TOFU Deep fried tofu with a yummy sauce and bunch of veggies (carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, etc.). Very yummy, especially the sauce on top. CHOPPED SCALLOP NIGIRI This was actually not bad - the portions were huge and scallops were huge/creamy as well. TORO NIGIRI Toro tasted low quality and had a few bone pieces in the fish. Didn't like this at all one bit. read more

Don't order the spicy salmon roll the salmon looked like it went through a meat grinder and there was no spicy sauce on top

Hime Sushi is the best sushi restaurant in Vancouver. You pay $1-3 more for a meal than the average joint, but you get an order of magnitude increase in quality. The food is always fresh, professionally prepared, and delicious. They are absolutely clean, and through Covid maintained the highest standards. Not to mention the service which is always top notch. read more

Went here randomly and was pleasantly surprised! Everything we ordered tasted great! Good service and atmosphere. I would definitely come back to try more items on the menu. I was craving for Sushi tonight and couldn't decide which one I should try for.... Hime or Sushiyama? We walked by and checked out both of it then decided to go to Hime. Glad that we picked the right one! The food is so good for such reasonable price and the service is excellent as well. Everything is high in quality and very tasty!! Of coz, we ordered quite a bit of food for 3. Ankake Tofu - Deep fried tofu with Japanese mushroom on top (it's so crispy outside, soft and smooth inside. But, the crystal sauce was sweet) Ebi Mayo - deep fried prawns with yams in house salad sauce (the presentation was good and prawns was tasty) Okonomiyaki - Japanese style seafood and veggie pancakes (Delicious) Ika Kara Age - Japanese style calamari (it was ok, just a bit dry) Sockeye Sushimi - It was fresh and tasty (but not enough varieties of sushmi) Spicy chopped scallops cone - Was big and spicy, the seaweed still quite crunchy. Sushi - All were good. Dragon Roll - California Roll on top of Eel with avocado (Nice and yummy) read more

Sadly the change of ownership came with a horrible change in the food standard . Tempura heavy ( fish & chips type batter ) over cooked . As a UBC student, I come here way too often, sometimes 3 times in one day that I get a membership card which makes me think it's time to write a review. This is the only place near campus that I know for sure won't give me food poisoning and always has very good quality and fresh fish. It's expensive but for the quality and good portions, I'd say it's pretty decent. The sashimi is always great and I enjoy eating here with my friends often. Hime is a perennial favourite for me - one of my best friends lives just around the corner and I can't count the number of times we've gorged ourselves here! This evening, my dining companion had never experienced the deliciousness so I happily suggested we go. The sushi rolls are always beautifully presented, fresh, and tasty! The staff are attentive and courteous - my complimentary green tea was swiftly refilled every time it was getting low, and my empty miso soup bowl disappeared before I even noticed! My only complaint is that I'm so full right now I can hardly move - how dare you make your food so yummy! (I'll be back... And soon...) read more

I'm not one to turn down sushi in Vancouver... ever! (Well, except maybe for oysters at Rodney's)! So, when my dining companion for the evening suggested 3 different places for us to meet, I went for Hime without even blinking. I made us a reservation and was sitting in great company in no time. In addition to complimentary green tea and edamame, I started with a seaweed salad and my companion started with a miso soup. We then shared the House Vegetable Roll, a Tempura Yam Roll, a BC Roll, Chop Scallop Nigiri (Spicy and Regular), and a Sakura Spider Roll... Hime's service was friendly and attentive and everything was beautifully plated and most important of all, it tasted fresh! I found the prices to be reasonable as well. I go to school at VCC so I love coming into Hime for a quick lunch. I didn't realize how popular this place was because you can't really see in from the window outside so it took me a while to gather the courage and walk in. Just wanted to say that it's really cool that the people who worked there are actually Japanese so it says a lot about the quality of their food. I almost always order their chicken teriyaki donburi during my breaks because it comes out rather quickly and isn't very fussy. The price is very easy on my college-student wallet. Their teriyaki sauce is the sweetest and the portion size is perfect. I'm also a fan of their chicken karaage, ebi mayo, and salmon sashimi. They taste how they should. When I have time I like to indulge in their green tea ice cream. Unlike most would-be Japanese establishments, Hime is clean and well lit and not at all sketchy. And unlike the high-end Japanese tapas, they don't yell at you when you come in. When I sit at the bar I like to listen to the sushi chefs banter in Japanese - it kind of adds to the experience. Their servers are very sweet girls and they never pressure you leave. read more

Sashimi prices are pretty good ($6 for 5 pieces of salmon) and the slices are generous. The $9 nabeyaki udon was tasty, hot, and teeming with toppings. Should've been 4 stars based on the food, but service imploded into nonexistence when the restaurant got really busy. Checked out Hime due to the Yelp reviews, and was NOT disappointed! Free tea first off, which should be a standard I think. Is only tea :) Got pretty busy in there, also another good sign (there's nothing worse than being in a completely empty restaurant). I ordered avocado maki rolls and a chicken don. Both arrived promptly and were *delicious*. The avocado was so creamy! And the chicken don was just the right size portion so I didn't feel like I'd over eaten, and unable to fit out the door. Best of all, free chocolate when the bill arrived, to feed the sudden sweet craving :D Will definitely be returning, cheers Yelp! read more

Ordered though DoorDash today since I had a craving for sushi. Hime was on the top search so decided to give it a try. Ordered the following: takoyaki, karaage, veggie sunomono, chopped scallops roll and sunny roll. While the takoyaki and karaage were packed with flavour, they were quite small in size. So the fact that they were around $5 was almost not quite worth it since I've definitely had better and bigger takoyaki and karaage for that price. So 3.5/5 in terms of overall quality. Veggie sunomono was severely lacking in a nice vinegar flavour as I found it to be quite bland and warm by the item it arrived. Came with slices of cucumber and tomato. 2/5 Chopped scallops roll was pretty average, nothing special to write about and I'd give it a solid 4/5 as again, for some reason the flavour was very subtle and almost bland. The sunny roll was the best, however I found a big hair inside after I had already chewed up a piece of the roll for quite some time so I'm extremely disappointed with that. It was a spicy tuna with deep fried yam on top which in terms of flavour, was a solid 5/5 but the hair drops it down to a 3. Otherwise overall review of this place is a 3, since it was pretty average. Nothing particularly special about this place. read more

This place was pretty great. a large sake, about 6 pieces, an appetizer, 2 rolls, and the sashimi special all for $74. Everything was very good and fresh, the scallop was especially good. Tried this restaurant today for the first time and ordered take out just to satisfy my cravings. My go to order at any sushi restaurant is usually a California roll with WILD salmon add into the roll. I thought I was clear about this when placing the order, but it became apparent when I got to work and opened my lunch. Instead of wild salmon I was served with farmed salmon. I know this because wild salmon is more of a red color, whereas farm salmon is pink and fatty. It's unfortunate that I had to pay the extra charge of ($1) each roll, only to be disappointed. I should have triple checked because of the low price of a dollar. Anyways, if you're gonna order take out from here you should triple check your orders because I asked for extra ginger and didn't even receive that. read more

We ordered the Dragon Roll, Crunch Munch Roll, Alaska Roll, Tuna Roll, Agedashi Tofu and Spicy Tuna Salad. The Chef's Specialty Rolls were delicious. Spicy Tuna was spicy. A friend and I went out to for Japanese food on a Wednesday night. We ended up at Hime Japanese Restaurant. I counted 2 other Japanese restaurants on the same block as Hime, and there is a gaggle sprinkled all over the area. Man talk about competition! 2 thumbs up for Hime! We started with the Cold Organic Tofu. It was a good appetizer to get the taste buds going. Than we shared some rolls the Sunny Roll and the Paradise Roll. Both very good. The Sunny roll was a bit spicy, but not to the point where one had to run for water! I had the Unagi Donburi. Again very good! Lots of eel and the sauce was nicely spread on the eel and rice. I would order it again. Food wise no complaints! The restaurant is pretty small. It could maybe accommodate 30 people max. We came on a Wednesday night and it was 90 percent full. I'm sure the line up would be out the door on a Friday night. The service was excellent. As soon as I sat down I was immediately given a hot tea. The waitress was cute and not overtly ingratiating. As I said before 2 thumbs up! Be back soon! read more

Wasnt overly impressed with the food. The service was good tho. But I would have to say. They could do better maybe it was just that day.

I'm sad to give a one star rating because the food is good, pricing is excellent, the service is efficient, and it's a very convenient location. Nice ambience, nice almost everything. I'm giving it a one-star review because half way through my meal, one of the cooks standing in the exposed kitchen area ducked behind the counter and started clipping his fingernails. In the kitchen. With the food. The restaurant had very few patrons at the time I was in, and the sound of the clipping was very, very loud. Who has ever clipped their nails without one or two going flying? Where do they go? Well, if you're at home in the bathroom where this kind of activity is appropriate, then it goes on the floor somewhere, and it gets swept up. In a kitchen, however, where does it go? On a cooking, prep, or (heavens forbid) service surface. And then maybe in my mouth. This is an automatic disqualification for me, I'm afraid. Such a pity - otherwise, this is a great spot, however I will absolutely not be back. read more

Not fond of the food AT ALL. This is a Korean run sushi place so it's not as good as Japanese places to start with. Food portions were small, they had A LOT of cucumbers rather than avocado in their rolls. The tuna didn't taste like tuna, neither did the salmon. They looked like fishes but tasted like water. The gyoza looked like deep fried Chinese dumplings. Server was very inconsiderate and didn't feel like serving us. She didn't bring napkins and chopsticks even after the food came. We had to ask for them. We even had to ask for tea refills. Prices were high for a place on the east end. I love sushi, would definitely recommend sushi California on Broadway and cambie (Korean run as well) than this one. read more

Review Type : Late Lunch Hime or "Princess" in Japanese did not disappoint. The restaurant was very well designed with portraits of Japanese paintings hung along the walls. The curtains were drawn to keep the sun from glaring in the store but still left a warm glow that revealed the hard wooden counter top that separated the dining floor and the sushi chefs workspace. I found Hime off nearby locations from the Yelp app and decided to try it because of the reviews it had. Since we arrived at around 2pm, the store was decently empty, with only one other table. We ordered quite a few dishes which included appetizer sashimi to try their fish. sakura spider roll to sample their specialty rolls, ika karaage because the picture looked delicious, a few pieces of nigiri, and a tuna croquette because it was the special of the day. To our surprise, all the food was delicious. The deep fried squid came with a mayo they made which helped bring out a lot more flavor. The tuna croquette tasted like a tuna version of crab cakes and there would never be any complaints about crab cakes, the specialty roll we got was very elegantly plated, and when the sashimi arrived to the table, the waitress told us the chefs gave us a few pieces of expensive complimentary red tuna sashimi to taste. I've had a couple instances before where the chef would provide a couple pieces of fancier sashimi on days where there are only a few customers, but it never will cease to surprise me how grateful I am they took extra effort to make us feel special. All in all I had a wonderful experience at Hime. With the decor, food quality, and random effort to care for their customers, I am definitely pleased and will return. This may be one of the best sushi places around the area. read more

This sushi place starts out friendly. and the digs are nice and cozy (all wood paneling, fairly bright lighting but not enough to hurt your eyes). I took a friend who's basically a complete sushi neophyte (she'd never had raw fish, and had only heard of California rolls), so it was quite a fun time. We were in a hurry to get to a play, but they brought out the dishes in fairly quick succession, giving us enough time to get out east. So we went through the following dishes: 1. Grilled black cod with miso and mustard - the cod was smooth, slippery, and sublime; oily with that deep fish aroma you get from cod, yet it was very light on the palate, with a great savoriness. However, it was a really stingy serving (about 6 bites worth) for $8.99. 2. Fresh crab california roll - tasty and light, the roll really did bring out the salt and sweetness inherent in fresh crab that is unique and highly different from the pollock that masquerades as fake crab. However, but they did not shell the crab well. In particular, they didn't remove those shell portions that are at the top of crab legs, as I I felt a lot of those shell fragments (and saw them) when eating the roll. 3. Salmon and avocado roll - the salmon was the right balance of fresh salmon flavor with a small balance of fat, but the avocado was a little hard, so the roll wasn't perfect. 4. Nigiri - we had uni (sea urchin), ahi (red tuna), toro (tuna belly) and hotate (scallops). My friend was adventurous and she enjoyed the toro the most, which I expected since it's the most friendly to newcomers. Personally, I thought the uni was very nice and, the ahi was kind of tough and sinuous (another disappointment considering it was one of their special limited items), the toro sublime with a lovely finish, and the hotate that nice balance of light meat, sweet sea taste, without the rubberiness or fishiness that can come if the scallop isn't fresh. 5. Gomae roll - this made for an interesting concept but was poorly executed. While the roll was fine (the spinach and rice held together), they served a very thin sesame sauce for dipping that made the roll feel drippy and wet. I understand that they wanted to try and serve it like goma-ae (where the sesame is on top of the roll), but the sesame dressing is thick when it comes for gomae so people can mix it in... it's not a watery mess. Water around already kind of watery spinach is a bit of a fail. The service was polite and attentive, but didn't really know much about the menu. So nothing to write home about. I wanted to like this restaurant, but it just ended up being so-so when I went there. Sushi standards in Vancouver are high, and if you are going to charge what Hime does, then you'd better have good quality to your items. read more

I had "the feeling." Sushi lovers alike are the only ones who will understand the incredible significance behind that phrase, but I will do my best to break it down into 6 or 8 pieces for you. THE FEELING: when the universe is attacking you, and nothing in the world makes you feel better except for a sushi roll that hits the spot in your stomach that releases gastrin and hydrochloric acid in the most pleasant, digestive way. You feel satiated. You feel rejuvenated. ...and in that tiny moment where that morsel of perfectly flavoured sushi hits your tongue, everything in the world, doesn't seem so bad after all. Granted, you don't have to be having one of those days in order to come to Hime, but keep that on your checklist for the zombie apocalypse that's destined to occur. I've vouched to go to Hime rather than the other couple of sushi places that are a stone's throw from its door because its quiet and calm space echoes the Japanese way of living, or in my case, dining. I'm quite partial to less stimulus and a non-bustling atmosphere when I need "the feeling" and I believe that if I were to dine here in the circumstances of a zombie apocalypse, I would do well to sit and think of a solid plan of action in such an atmosphere, compared to the cramped and overpacked sushi places nearby. Not to mention the fact that the area is so open, I would have plenty of time to realize if a zombie was in the vicinity, and could vacate the area quickly- there's nothing worse than going to a place to eat, when you could get eaten yourself. The menu's quite fresh and diverse for a sushi place of its size- kudos to the chefs. The presentation is colourful, but not overdone. The only comment that I would make is that sometimes the staff is a bit "busy" to notice when a table needs service- not enough for me to dislike them for it, but enough for me to notice. Then again, it's not like I'm in a rush to avoid zombies or anything, but for now, I shall enjoy my visits when I need a good feeling. Recommended main deal: the Sunny Roll. Score: Grey skies are going to cheer-up when you're here- even if it's during a zombie apocalypse. read more

This place is great. We went last night as it was getting late, we were tired from work and too lazy to make dinner, and as soon as my boyfriend mentioned sushi I could think of nothing else. We were originally thinking of going to Sushiyama down the street, but I remembered some friends had recommended Hime and decided to give it a try. Glad we did! It's a cute, cozy Japanese joint with great sushi and friendly waitstaff. We ordered a bunch of different rolls and all were excellent with delicious fresh fish. The waitress was accommodating when we wanted to see the menu again and order a couple more rolls -- I told you we were hungry! Only a couple things would have improved the experience. I'm used to sushi restaurants where your cup of tea is never empty, and considering the size of the place I'm a little surprised that Hime couldn't accomplish that. Oh well. The other issue was that there was a bit of a mix up with our second order of food and the sushi chef had to be told again what we had ordered, so it took much longer than we had expected. Everybody was nice about it, though, and we ended up staying after they were supposed to close because of it, but we never felt rushed. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one because otherwise I had a great time here! read more

Hime (hee-MAY) is a nice little neighborhood sushi joint in Mount Pleasant. To my surprise, the proprietor and employees were all Japanese, and right or wrong, that usually gives me the impression that the fish will be of superior quality. The sashimi appetizer is only seven bucks and gets you seven pieces of fish: two tuna, three salmon, and two slivers of red snapper. The tuna was a bit mushy, I almost mistook the snapper for ginger due to the thin cut, but the salmon was excellent. You could tell that it wasn't some farm raised dreck. The hamachi was buttery and firm, as it should be. Mercury poisoning be damned, I could eat this fish all day. My only beef is that the restaurant is quite small. There are only four usable seats at the counter and the five two-seat tables are about eight inches apart. I almost put my ass into someone's plate as I was leaving, and I spent my dinner listening to two women talk bad about their men. Overall, a nice dining experience. read more

Blah. If I had one word to describe Hime, it would be that. If I had a second word it would be: No. Just no. I've been here twice now and been underwhelmed enough to feel qualified in reviewing it. The first time I got a very bland combo box which I guess was good value if you like sub-par chicken teriyaki and boring California roll.
