I love coming to this place after I finish my workout at a nearby gym. The food is consistently good, and the vibes are very chill and relaxing. I like getting their bento box combos, because it feels like the best value to variety ratio of things that I like to eat. On this particular day, I got the salmon teriyaki and sashimi combo, which I think came up to $20 or so (before tax+tip). Very affordable for something that got me very full! It also comes with miso soup, which is great. The salmon was perfectly cooked with delicious teriyaki sauce, and the sashimi was very fresh. I had asked to change the hokkigai and surf clam for tuna and salmon and that meant 11 pieces instead of 12 but still a good deal for the assortment. I'm now a fan here cause i couldn't forget the mouthful nigiri and scallop cone overflowed when I squeezed it midway. The rice with the nigiri was very good. Bumped into the place by accident as my aim was VBce directly upstairs. Their sign was bright enough for me to contemplate but initially I assumed it'll be those mediocre places. There was a lot of staff on duty and were quite attentive but I had to be proactive in telling them what I want and get served quickly. We ordered: - beef udon - 2x Bento boxes - Spicy combo which included spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, and spicy sashimi (they use that spicy sauce for Korean bibimbap) - agadashi tofu - spicy potstickers I thought the food was good, nothing to complain about. After brunch around 11am, I was hungry around 4pm. My boyfriend and I were shopping on Granville Street. We happened to find this sushi place. We saw a happy hour sign outside the restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. We looked at the appetizer menu, it stated 3-6pm and beer and appetizers got 30% off, so we looked at what we wanted to order from the appetizer menu. However, the waitress said sorry the happy hour menu was only for weekdays. We were like.... =.=" then they should state the days for their happy hours. The sign was misleading. We ordered Katsu don, sushi pizza, sushi tower and a pacific saury shioyaki from the regular menu. The food was okay. Not bad but not great. The restaurant didn't give us a "wow" feel. The texture of the deep fried pork chop in the Katsu don was very "hard". I had to chew for a long time before I swallowed. The service was okay. Pricing was average. Needlessly rude and unprofessional waitress :/ New to the area and I've been coming to SushiVan regularly. For the most part, they have been kind and welcoming. Today, the moment I entered I was aggressively hounded by the waitress, demanding I get her my vaccine card, which I immediately began getting her. Though I was glad to comply, she continued to be needlessly rude and aggressive so it only made sense that I leave. An ounce of patience and a modicum of respect is usually enough to make everyone happy. This is a great example of recurring business lost over a lack of basic professionalism. I eat at Sushi Van all the time. The food is excellent and the service is quick and friendly. All things you want in a neighbourhood sushi joint. They have an extensive menu that includes appetizers, soups, teriyaki, bentos, sushi and sashimi. There are plenty of veggie options. White or brown/purple rice is also available. I rate this place 4.5 out of 5 only because the restaurant is in a basement and although it is always clean and tidy it could use a little freshening up In the decor department. My family initially went to another place for lunch while we were shopping on Granville, but we got a bad vibe from this other place (high prices, limited menu) so we ended up here at Sushi Van. SO glad!!! Had a wonderful lunch here. Two of us ordered various Bento boxes and each dish was delicious - even the miso soup they came with. The portions were very generous, too. Our kid ordered a sushi roll (I forget what type) and it was super fresh and plated nice, too. We had lots of food left over to bring home, and we were stuffed. I come here every week and generally enjoy the food and service. I ordered my regular chicken and sashimi bento box today and noticed the quantity of rice has shrunk enormously to only 3 bites. For someone who needs to have rice with my chicken teriyaki, this is really not going down well with me. I know food prices have gone up but being stingy on rice is not the solution. Came here for a quick lunch one day. The prices were reasonable and the service was fast. Got there just before 12pm and they weren't packed yet. Of course, once the 12 o'clock rush came, they got pretty busy. I had the roll combo which came with a miso soup. I was surprised that the miso soup actually had flavour to it. Usually I find miso pretty bland. The rolls were good. I asked for spicy mayo on the side and the mayo was delicious. Even better, I wasn't charged extra for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have passable sushi in my neighbourhood but several things conspire to make me rate this place amongst the 2 star 'Meh, I've had better" reviews. 1 - Price. Sushi is one of those "get what you pay for" kinds of foods. Really cheap and you get sick,.. realy expensive and it is a life experience (like Tojo's). This place is "good" sushi,... right in the middle,.. but the prices are slightly higher - shave a buck or 2 of each bento box and it would be decent value. 2 - Bad seating. This part can be avoided. I was seated right next to the kitchen and in front of the cash register. The waitresses grabbed food from the chefs right over my head!! Probably 5 times this happened and when it dd not they were moving the chair of where my dining partner would have been if I had not been alone. ANNOYING. To add insult to injury, the people picking up phoned in orders had to stand within my personal space as they waited. Ok,.. Because this was a location close to an associate that wanted to meet me, we came here, or really I probably wouldn't venture here. With a name like Sushi Van, creativity is definitely not in this restaurants strong suit... or is it? Walking down the stairs.. yes, it's in a very odd plaza right no Granville, right beside the new weed joint...I saw the people I was going to meet, right in the middle of the restaurant. This place has quite a bit of seating, considering when you enter, how big.. or how small this place really is. If you are looking for pretty, well forget it, this is your bare-bones typical Japanese fare type restaurant, fast-food as what you probably would call it. The one thing I found quite cute was the flowery picture book sized menu they bring over. While looking through the menu I noticed the specials they carry, the normal roll orders, some appetizers and odd specials like stir fried udon, and their special rolls, cause nowadays every joint has got them. I steered clear of most things, but went for their spicy combo roll, not knowing what to order from the cute picture book. While I was waiting for my food, this place during a Friday lunch is busy... not just the people sitting in here.. but the line up of takeout bags... where when I eventually paid for my food, noticed 3 individual bags being ready to be picked up. Once my food came, there was a pile of small sliced sashimi drenced in spicy sauce, my other rolls had much of this sauce too. For about $10, I really couldn't complain, nothing special, but it definitely filled me up, without feeling over-riced. If I am in this area, if I really needed Japanese, and I needed something cheap that won't break the bank, I would come here, just your average joint that I would put in the fast food category but at least you aren't walking out with a pizza, or fries and a burger! read more

Staff are friendly and attentive, in saying that they could use one more person on the floor as timing was all a little off ie: guest waiting to pay, guests waiting for bills, bussing etc made it feel awkward. Now on to the food: Pork gyoza: mushy, under filled and completely lacked any texture or flavour. This product really needs work guys Veggie Roll: nice as the rice was well cooked and the items fresh and crisp Chicken Teriyaki: I know not very adventurous. If this was a stock market, this resto's moving average would be trending up, as the latest reviews seem to suggest: BUY rating! Initially, being a real Yelp reviewer, I'm quite loyal to what the overall rating is, and 3-3.5 stars can be a bit iffy, but the good quantity of reviews just got my curiosity going, so figured had to do some takeout. Knew they had been opened for almost a year (their sandwich board shows their anniversary coming soon, so expect some specials, hint hint) but so tough to find parking in this part of town but I digress. Ordered: Toro sashimi: highly recommend! 6 pcs for $7, fresh, and OK value--not the biggest or thickest slices, but quality, right! Dragon roll: unagi/avocado: very tasty Awesome roll: totally misled by Sushi Town's infamous version but far from it: only 6 pcs but oversized, no flakes (knew that before), but while tasty if you like a bit of a kick, just above average. Because Sushi Van is close by my work so I tend to go there very often (at least 2 times a week). I used to sit in to enjoy my lunch, but I am very dissatisfied with the waitresses there. Although I take my orders to go, the shortest interaction with the waitresses (ie: pay for my food), I would still leave with a disappointment. This small place is quite packed during lunch hours and they have at least 2 servers. Sometimes I would have to wait until my food comes before I get my tea. And I did ask for my tea.. about 3 times? The response was always "wait a minute".. does it actually mean 10 minutes? Ridiculous. Despite the service, the food is decent for the Sushi selections in the area given the price range. I usually order spicy tuna roll, negitoro roll and a california roll (comes in 4 pcs for $1.75), which comes to just over $9. Sashimi Salad is also very tasty with a good balance of both salad and fish. For cooked food, I highly recommend their Oyako don which consists of grilled chicken, fried egg, and veggies on rice with a sweet sauce. It also comes with miso soup, but isn't the best. They have a udon combo that comes with a few pieces of nigiri and a california roll for about $9 - not bad. If you're looking for a sushi place with decent pricing in the area, I would recommend here, but don't have high expectations for the service. read more

I've been here twice for take out and it's decent! Service is typically quite fast. The two times I ordered takeout were both bento boxes. I love the tempera, it's phenomenal. As for the california roll, it's decent. I'm also a big fan of the appetizer (salad). What I find that I least like, is the portion of the rice. It's probably about 1/4 cup of rice. It's extremely little rice. I'd have to go with the salmon bento just because that's what I like more. I've had the chicken teriyaki and it's not bad! I just prefer salmon. My girlfriend and I paid our first and now only visit to SushiVan earlier this week for dinner. Their storefront used to be a wrap zone if I'm not mistaken. Chairs were comfortable and we were allowed to seat ourselves. Unfortunately that's where the positives end. We ordered a beef teriyaki box and gomae to share, both of which the waitress repeated back to us. It didn't take long for the teriyaki, but it was missing the miso soup which was supposed to come with it. The gomae never arrived, nor were we charged for it, but we did see it sitting on the counter waiting to be brought to us. The beef teriyaki was nothing special and certainly didn't justify the ~$9 price point. We were also surprised that the california roll included with the box was 1/2 to 2/3 the size of rolls elsewhere. The prices were high for our liking, especially when compared to our favorite sushi place nearby - QQ. read more

SushiVan is great for both a take out option and sit down. It's one of the few sushi places where the ambience is good and the service is fast. There sushi is fresh and I've always had a good experience at this little restaurant. It's by no means fancy but definitely a step up from so many of the same style sushi restaurants in Van city. My favourite dishes to get here at the sashimi salad ($8.50) which comes with a good amount of fish and lots of lettuce and flavourful dressing, I also often get the tuna and salmon sashimi ($6 for 6 pieces) and one of there many rolls, and let me tell you they've got some fun ones! My one suggestion would be to switch up the sauce for the ebi mayo, the sauce isn't mayo based at all, its more of a sugar syrup. I live really close so I pop in quite often. The prices are a touch higher than some, but worth it. Surprisingly they've got two tables outside and when the sun hits them, they're a great spot to post up in the summer months. Horrible service. My partner went in and the server named Jane would give him attitude. I went in for dinner, and she was working so we walked out. It's too bad, we live in the neighbourhood and even our friends have stopped going there. We gave it our last try and it's not worth it. There are more than enough sushi restaurants in town and this is mediocre with annoying service. Better go to Suika: Great food and genuine service and just two blocks away! We went there instead. Best to spend you money elsewhere. We are taking our business elsewhere from now on even if that means driving to a different sushi restaurant. Bad service kills a business. read more

We decided to treat our sushi taste buds with this new opening around the corner from our office for lunch. We arrived in a group of six and our friendly host accommodated us on a long table. The decor is all over the place, neither authentic nor western so don't go for the ambiance. The place was packed as it was their opening day and they were clearly short staffed. It took them half an hour to serve half of our table while the other half was waiting for their food to arrive. Groups arriving after us had already got their food while our table was hungrily waiting. We each tried one of the lunch boxes, which were nothing special. As I was eating a buddy, ordered the Salifornia, Bacon Mountain, Volcano and the Nude Boy rolls. Definitely liked the no-seaweed Nude Boy; it tasted very fresh and light with not too much sauce. The bacon mountain roll didn't take like any sushi i have ever had, particularly with the bacon wrapped around the outside. Absolutely would try it again if not just for. the bacon. They're pretty new, so maybe it's not fair to be reviewing them already, but I've been twice in the last three weeks and have experienced lackluster service both times. Food was super slow to arrive, drinks or dishes were forgotten, no one came to check up on us to refill tea or water, and we had to go up to the counter to pay because no one came to collect our dishes and offer us the bill. Wow. One of the worst sushi in town. Their draft beer was watered down like crazy. It was not beer any more. More like beer-flavour water. Their Alaska roll was definitely one of the worst I have ever had. Tiny rolls with tiny thin salmon on top. The fish didnt taste fresh as it tasted blend. I stumbled here while starving and I'm glad I found this place! The decor is simple and modern with some greenery and white walls. More importantly though the food was bang on. I ordered 6x toro nigiri, Tokyo tower and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was very fresh and tasty. The sizes were more traditional(not too big, but rather just right). They also mix their rice with green tea giving it a cool healthier appearance; however it's really just white rice dyed. The staff were cute and very friendly. I love my yam rolls but each time it has been undercooked. Last time I got take out I asked them to cook it longer and it was still a bit under done. The other stuff I've tried there has been great. This is a review for the vegetarian bento bowl. It was fantastic! Got miso soup, edamame, salad with delicious dressing, 6 mini vege sushi, fried tofu on bean sprouts and 4 pieces vege tempura. It was fresh and really delicious. Very generous for $8.50. Service was great. Iced water immediately brought over and a friendly server. This place care about their staff too. They're all going on a picnic on BC Day. I really liked this place and I will come back. They do take out too. Great food and a feast for the money. read more
