Sushi has gotten so expensive and reataurants have been skimping. This place still provides good quality and quantity for a reasonable price. Remember when you order the so called special rolls and theres nothing special except for a few pieces of sashimi on top of a roll they alreadt have and suddenly it's 2-3 times the price? The kiss of fire roll has a mountain of delicious sashimi more on top of each sushi. Well worth the dish. Their chopped scallop was super fresh. The spicy tuna I found the fish to be kinda mashed. I like the ones with whole tuna marinated in spicy sauce. The chicken teritaki don had a good weight and super deep flavors. A little on the salty side. The parking lot under is free for the first certain minutes. You just have to put your license plate in the app. read more

This place was quite busy with several customers popping in to collect their take out orders. The chef was busy making sushi and I saw many boxes waiting to be collected when I was there. I decided to get the house combo as it came with 5 nigiri sushi (tuna, salmon, ebi, surf clam and red snapper) and house roll. I always liked to get the house roll to try as it tended to have a bit of everything. The presentation looked good. Simple and clean. The house roll was tasty. The nigiri was disappointing. The sushi rice was a bit hard and the fish slices pretty thin. With the many sushi joints in metro vancouver, this is solely meant for the neighborhood. It is decent but nothing special or outstanding to make a special trip for. I believe this is the only Japanese restaurant in Highgate which is great for people shopping here and need some food after that. read more

This place is a petite venue and a fast joint for sushi. On that day, I ordered the Roll Bento Box. It was a disappointment dish for lunch. Every item was pre-made and reheat. The tempura tasted like it was made in the morning with thick batter of shrimp, yam and carrot. The California Roll was ok in taste but there is no effort in presentation. The Miso soup tasted like it was made a few days ago in a crop pot. I have to throw it away with a sip of the soup. Overall, I don't recommend this place for meals any day. read more

Tasty but snack sized sushi place in the Highgate Mall. Parking is available in the large lot underneath the complex. The place actually doesn't look like much from the outside. Thanks to the name I actually thought it was a produce store. There is some outdoor seating there (2 seats) which is nice. Staff were friendly. The place was busy with plenty of takeout orders. Ended up having to wait some 30 minutes for my order. Quality is decent, but portions are definitely on the small side. Something to keep in mind. The assorted sashimi (12 pieces) was a kid sized snack. For this reason I am a bit hesitant to go back. It sure was tasty though. read more

Got take out from here last night. I opted for the Maguro A Ke special roll, and two nigiri (small eater). While I see a few other reviews mentioning small portions I thought this was perfect for me, and their pricing for special rolls is actually pretty good. The roll was decent overall but I gotta say they are REALLY good at deep frying. Like I was floored by how crispy it was. Tamago nigiri was also decent, though they didn't quite put enough rice inside the Inari nigiri so I might not get that one again (the tofu pocket was all flappy lol). Anyways, I'll definitely come back to try more fried rolls here next time. read more

I didn't expect to be blown away by the little sushi restaurant at High Gate Mall, but I was a little disappointed. The fish in my maki rolls were barely visible by the time I got to my 5th piece. The middle pieces were normal, but the end pieces that the chef cuts off were mostly rice. Speaking of rice, it was a little hard as well. Fresh Box would be somewhere I would eat again if I was too hungry to drive another 10 minutes. I appreciate that they take Visa and MC though. read more

Cozy little sushi place in my neighborhood. My first time here was with a friend before going to the gym right across, quick bite and it did the job. This place can get busy around dinner time as people like to order takeout, but don't worry as their service is efficient and food still good. Second visit by myself I tried their salmon sashimi again(!) and the deep California roll. Sashimi is still very fresh, doesn't remind me of the frozen fish that some sushi restaurants serve up. I should've known the California rolls are deep fried as it states on the name...guess I was daydreaming when placing the order, anyway it was deep fried with mayo and teriyaki sauce drizzled on top. Surprisingly I enjoyed them although deep fried sushi is not usually my thing. The batter was light and the ingredients were held intact in the rolls: the usual stuff imitate crab meat, avacado and cucumber. They do have other special rolls on the menu and I heard many people ordered the crispy roll, maybe try that next time. Brown rice is also on the menu as it becomes quite popular nowadays, I'll stick to my traditional white rice sushi for now. I have eaten dinner here and I really liked it. The staff are really nice, and the sushi is good! I like the refill tea station and the place is always clean . I also had a party and bought a few of their catering platters, the sushi was fresh and everyone loved it! They also included loads of napkins wasabi, soy sauce and chopsticks (I have found surprising amounts of useful applications for chopsticks!) last time I bought platters from a place in oakridge, they totally stiffed me on the wasabi and chop sticks. I go to this sushi place not for the sushi but for the chicken yakisoba! I just love it. It's on the salty side according to my mom but I like savoury food. Sushi for me are ok and like the fact that you can refill your own tea. This place is small. Wish they have more sitting. The place is clean and staff are friendly. I really did want to rate this place higher and find myself wishing (again) that half stars existed in Yelpland. This would be a 2.5* place to be fair. The staff are friendly once you get their attention and the food comes relatively quickly, my best guess is that there are separate sushi chefs for the take out and eat in orders. There is a small, clean, no frills seating area... comfortable enough to eat your food and go. (I just counted 10 seats...so you can literally count the amount seating space on your fingers!! Yes! Finally get to use that line!) Finally ... did it pass the salmon roll and toro nigiri test? (If you've never seen any of my other reviews or met me... this is the standard on which I benchmark my sushi ... always eaten straight up, no soya sauce etc) Sadly the answer is no. The fish to rice ratio in the salmon roll was poor, only a sliver of fish swimming in a sea of rice. Considering that the quality of fish and price is similar to sushi garden, I would expect a similar level of salmon roll. The toro nigiri was tasty and the fish portion was alright, but of the 4 pieces that I ordered, 3 were half thawed. To be fair, the waitress did warn me that the fish was cold. Anyway, it's a decent place to stop for a nibble if you are in the highgate shopping area. read more

I am very angry at this restaurant- I went in ordered and paid for 30$worth of sushi even left 15% tip which I totally regret! I told them I was going to liquor store and would be back to pick up my order- they had locked the doors and I could see my order on the counter .. Went there for lunch today and ordered a couple rolls. The gal taking the order seemed completely uninterested in being there. No smile, no friendly chatting while I was placing the order. When she was packaging it up I saw her grab 3 soy sauce packets so I asked for one more. She looked at me like I had a third eyeball. She told me I already put three in so I said yes I saw that could I have one more please. She obviously wasn't pleased with that because she said nothing just grabbed one more and put it in the bag. The food was good and was ready fairly quickly which is why I gave them any stars at all. This is usually my go to place for a late dinner. I like the wide selection of different sushi (they also have brown rice sushi, if you're feeling healthy). I usually get their chicken teriyaki or salmon teriyaki but they are on the saltier side. If you're feeling hungry, they also have a lunch box option that gives you a big portion (tempura, teriyaki,salad,and rolls). They also have a nigiri combo. This place is small but clean and the staff are very nice and always smiling when taking my order.The price is decent for the food too, just wish they can lessen the salt. read more

was in the neighborhood after getting some frames downstairs. was feeling peckish and the person iat hakim optical said it was good after i asked her opinion about it. it was really good. the spicy tuna crunch roll and the caterpillar roll were delightful, caterpillar roll is a dynamite roll with avocado on top and crab meat. spicy tuna had this crunch-y crumble that added zest to it, and the spicy tuna was good. i am still thinking about how yummy the tuna crunch roll was. tasted v. fresh, portions were good. this was pricy for a student but relatvely decent. spent 17$ on two specialty rolls and a half order of salmon sashimi it is definitely a small to-go place that i wish was closer to where i lived! :) read more

I live close by, so I've ended up going here more often than I expected I would and you know what? I'm starting to grow attached to this little place. Those yam rolls are damn addictive! The girls who work in the front and so sweet! I always eat in because it's such a warm, quiet, relaxed atmosphere, I could sip away my tea there for hours. Right on my door step so gave it a try. The house special it is a monster, has everything in it so it test your chop stick skills out for sure. Slightly pricey for the quality and quantity but I guess that's all part of having a location like theres. This has quickly become my favourite sushi go to place. It may look like not much from the outside, don't judge with your eyes, judge with your mouth. My wife has mentioned this place is an office favourite for lunch. I've dined in 3 times in the past few months and have noticed that they do a booming take out business. They do brown rice sushi, a huge plus in my opinion. Try their deep fried California roll, it's the best one I've had since Oyama sushi stopped making decent ones. The sushi list isn't massive but will accommodate most tastes. They often have unique specials that are noteworthy. read more

I was disappointed :( I just moved into the area and considering that we spend a lot on sushi every month, we wanted to see if this was our next new hangout. Mayo in the california roll? Really? They told me that's how it's supposed to be made. Sorry.... I don't think so. She even said Safeway has mayo in their rolls. My response? I would never go to Safeway for sushi. They made no attempt to make me another one without mayo so they just lost about $400 a month in business just from my household. The dynamite roll also had tempura prawn that was pre cooked. If small businesses just went that extra mile, they would understand why bigger businesses make more profit. Customer always comes first. I go here all the time and the staff is usually nice and the sushi is good. However, today, I called them for pickup and the lady on the phone was very rude and condescending. When I asked a simple question, she got impatient and said "I already told you!" in a rude manner. It's not my fault I can't understand her because of her thick accent. Fresh Box is our favourite sushi place in our neighbourhood! My husband and I get takeout here a minimum of once per week and have enjoyed everything we have tried. It is always very fresh and tasty, and the fish is always high quality. They also have great sushi rice - it is nice and al dente rather than mushy like many other places. I also like that the roll pieces are a manageable size to eat in one mouthful - I hate it when you have to either try to stuff a ginormous piece into your mouth or attempt to eat it in two bites only to have it fall apart and make a giant mess! It is more so a takeout restaurant but has a few 2 person tables and a small bar. Takeout is always fast and service is great. read more

I've been a regular to this place since I moved into the area six months ago. They have now lost me as a regular for good. Their sushi is mediocre at best and they need to get a new counter girl. Clearly she doesn't listen because I've had my order messed up three times now and I'm done. Not worth the convenience, go somewhere else. read more
