Restaurant that has a small seating area, but gets a steady stream of customers doing take-out. This place is convenient because it's across from Price Mart. I use to go to this place years ago, and it was pretty good. But I think the quality changed. If your looking for basic tuna and salmon sashimi, this place isn't bad for price and portion. I ordered a bunch of sushi rolls with my family because I was craving sushi. Tokyo joe is pretty affordable, although prices have gone up a bit for to inflation. :( Overall the sushi was ok. Alaska roll was my favorite. But we were disappointed with the dynamite roll. We had ordered 2 and although the rolls were gigantic, they were filled with lots of imitation crab meat, some cucumbers and only had one shrimp tempera that was a bit soggy. There was no avocado and if they made the roll smaller, it might taste more balanced. read more

This place has gone down hill fast over the past year. It's dirty, customer service is awful, they will ask you to move mid eating to accommodate a larger group, and rush to get you to pay the bill before you're finished eating. They also push you to use Debit or Cash to avoid paying surcharges, when Credit Cards work just fine. Try using a Credit Card next time and watch them talk their language behind your back. This was a picnic experience with friends at a nearby park. We figured sushi is good picnic food, so we got some takeouts from Tokyo Joes. We got a DX spicy combo, Unagi don and my friend got a combo with miso soup, chicken teriyaki, and a California roll. They were fast and the presentation of the food was nice. (Photo ready) considering they are in takeout boxes. The portions were very decent, particularly the unagi don. I haven't had that in a while and most places nowadays are skimping down on the fish. These guys however were quite generous with the amount they lay on the rice. Flavoring for both the Don and the Sushi was good. The DX combo came with some spicy tuna sashimi, tuna roll, nigitoro roll, and they pretty much just covered everything with a bit of that spicy mayo. It's their quick and dirty way of making everything "spicy" but I don't mind that, it worked for me. Overall, I've enjoyed the meal. Definitely a great option for budget sushi in Richmond. One thing to note tho, they don't have a proper website with a recent menu these days, so when you search for these guys, Doordash and Skip will be the first things that pop up. Tokyo Joe's is a Korean-run sushi restaurant in the heart of Richmond that offers a variety of dishes at moderate price points. This is not my go-to sushi place, but I order from them once in a while for convenience since they have really quick service. You can typically walk in to place your order and be out the door in 10-15 minutes. The food is mediocre at best and reminiscent of Japanese food you might find in your local grocery stores (like PriceSmart next door, although personally I find PriceSmart's sushi/sashimi to be of better quality). The sushi rolls are packed rather loosely and and fall apart once you pick them up, so you have to be careful when eating them. As for the sashimi quality, do not expect the best quality cuts. All that aside, this is a decent choice to fulfill your Japanese cravings if you are in the area but there are better food options nearby. read more

So I ordered TJ Combo 1 ($12.95) that came with Cali Roll with 5pcs of Sashimi. Food was satisfying; however nothing special about it for the price and the taste. If you've got a sushi craving you just can't shake, then look no further cause Tokyo Joe's got you covered. Support this local business! For what it is, this place has pretty much everything you could expect of a simple sushi joint. Operated by a full staff of friendly Koreans, Tokyo Joe offers a wide variety of the tried and true Japanese dishes at an affordable price and with decent quality. Some of the items I've ordered in the past: Crazy Roll - very good, tasty Red Dynamite Roll - good portion size Tuna and Salmon Combo - very good value, large nigiri sushi, good quality salmon Maki Combo A - good value, large portions One of the things that immediately stood out to me about Tokyo Joe's sushi was the portion sizes for the items I ordered. For all four items above, I paid about $50.00 including taxes and tips. For feeding two or three people, that's not bad at all! The nigiri sushi sizes were almost on par with what you'd find at Samurai Sushi or Banzai Sushi - they were extraordinarily larger than normal. Also, the Red Dynamite Roll pieces were so large they could barely fit in my mouth. Portions aside, it only took them 15 minutes to prepare my order! None of my rolls fell apart while eating so that's a testament to how Tokyo Joe works with speed, but doesn't sacrifice presentation. If I could give half-stars, my real review would be to give 4.5 stars to Tokyo Joe. For me, the tuna in the sushi I ordered were too fishy-tasting. I also want to point out that, while I was ordering for pick-up over the phone, the server answering my call hung up the phone near the end of our conversation before I was finished speaking, probably because she thought I wasn't going to add any more comments after stating my order. I thought it was a tiny bit rude, but I'm sure she didn't mean it so I can let it slide. In person, service was friendly and on-point! Whenever I'm in Richmond I make point of going to Tokyo Joe Sushi. The food is always super fresh, good portion size and well made. The staff are really friendly, the place is clean and the service is incredibly fast. Meal usually in front of me within 3 minutes of entering the place, that's way better than so called fast food places "ie McD's" even when ordering something not specifically on the menu. Added bonus is I believe they are Korean so getting gochujang sauce added or on the side is no issue. Parking can be a little challenging but not a huge issue. Prices are not the cheapest but definitely reasonable and definitely value for the product and service your getting. I highly recommend, they are the best at what they do, I been going there for years and will continue to do so. read more

Tokyo Joe is one of our go-to place for sushi in Richmond. It's conveniently located and lots of food choices. You can choose to dine in or take out. We used to dine in more often, enjoy their self served miso soup, but lately with a kid we prefer to take out and eat at the comfort of home. The rolls are always freshly made. We love the rolls with crispy noodles on top and eel inside (forgot what it's called). They have lots of variety as well, including lots of vegetarian options. I love crossing the border to get decent sushi for a reasonable price. I have to admit the sushi in this little joint is way better than what I would get where I live. It's such a shame because I probably would have paid twice the price here in Washington State for what's considered average sushi in the Richmond Area. The pros of this restaurant is the service. The waiters are attentive and they are super efficient. We also got our food right away and we were given complimentary miso soup which is itself great! The sushi is good. The fish is great and the cuts are decent. The price is very reasonable. We got a party platter and it was great for us- a family of 4. Although the rolls are good, I wasn't super impressed with them. I just feel like we've had better rolls somewhere else. Maybe it's just a fact that these rolls were prepared for someone else because they were served 5 minutes after we sat? I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars because we spent about $60 CDN with tip. They're not the best sushi that we got in the area but they're still pretty decent. Parking wise, park your car in designated areas. Parking up front is limited for 15 minutes. read more

Tokyo Joe is my new go to sushi spot in Richmond. I discovered this place about 3 weeks ago (thanks to Yelp) and have already been back 4 times. I love them that much. A few reasons why I love this spot: + Unpretentious, but delicious sushi. You kind of get hole in the wall vibes when you walk in, but the quality of the sushi is fantastic. + Quick, efficient service. From sitting down, to ordering, to the food coming out, it all took less than 10 minutes. I was amazed with how quickly the food came out, I had to ask our server if it was ours. + Free miso soup. You read that right. But I will repeat... they serve free miso soup. + Free spacious parking in the plaza next to the restaurant. This is defintiely a pro for Richmond. A couple sushi rolls/dishes I've tried and loved: + Mango cali roll + Crazy roll + Deep fried dynamite roll + Unagi roll + Fire dynamite roll + Dragon roll + Gyoza Like I said, I've been here 4 times already have not had a bad experience. Stopped by on our way up North for some quick takeout to bring to the hotel. This place is definitely a hole in the wall and parking is limited. The whole takeout ordering process was smooth and when I got there the place was packed!! Seared Salmon Salad - I really wanted seared salmon and this is the only seared salmon item they had. However, the seared salmon didn't have the fiery taste to it that you'd expect but the pieces were big and fresh and the salad dressing was good. Udon Combo A (small veggie udon + 8 piece California Roll) - the veggie udon was surprisingly good with lots of veggies and decent sized for my toddlers! The Cali roll was also solid as well! Dynamite Roll (4 pieces) - HUGE roll and tasty filled with shrimp tempura and something else crunchy! Chirashi Don - nice thick slices of fresh fish but don't be deceived by the deep bowl! There is a lot of rice and salad at the bottom but a good amount of sashimi too! Overall solid and awesome cheap yummy eat! We'll be back for more takeout!! read more

Know sushitown? Its exactly like that.. but less in everyway, except for their service! Which is definitely a good thing. Korean owned, but doesn't have the korean pow to it, as Sushitown does. Atleast at sushitown I can always rely on their really flavorful spicy sashimi (with nice korean hot sauce). At Tokyo Joe's.. everything was sloppy sushi, and the quality of the sashimi wasn't as appealing. I will push again that their service was great! (Even got free miso soup and edamame beans). They're loud and entertaining too, but unfortunately.. the only thing that they've got going for their food.. is their portions and price. I guess everyone needs that at times. read more

I have a friend from work who is obsessed with this place so I decided to check it out to see what it was all about. I got a TJ combo that came with a dynamite roll and 5 pieces of sashimi. The roll was large and it came stuffed with imitation crab meat, one shrimp tempura and some yam tempura. Not bad for the price but the tempura had been cooked for a while and were quite soggy. Not terrible but nothing special. The sashimi were a standard size to any fast food sushi joint but the quality was only okay. I've had fresher fish elsewhere. I also ordered their Soo Special which is an inari (bean curd) pocket stuffed with JUST spicy tuna sashimi. No rice. This was by far the best item in terms of quality, taste, and price point. Miso soup and tea are complimentary here. I ate in and found the service a little stifling since I was sitting close to the register and they kept walking around me. I appreciated the thought but wouldn't have minded some breathing room. All in all this was a pretty standard take out joint and next time I'll stick with the tried and true. read more

Came here for the Tokyo Joe's after the Tokyo Joe. Felt like coming in for a snack (Tokyo Joe across the street has small portions, but I digress), and ended up here. In case you're wondering, these locations have the same owner (same uniform and everything), but they are NOT the same as the Tokyo Joe's in downtown Vancouver. I asked. Parking here is available in the covered lot nearby, with some 5 spots directly in front. The interior is pretty ghetto, with floor tiles and beaten up walls. The staff were Korean (surprising!) but were very friendly and attentive. As I was only here for a snack, I didn't get to try too much. I settled for the Richmond Roll ($5.50) which is salmon and.. orange. Yes, the fruit. I had to give this a go. It doesn't work too well. The orange wasn't too fresh either. It was quite dry. I don't think the Richmond Roll will be surpassing the Alaska, California, or BC rolls in terms of popularity anytime soon. My friend Vincent N. had the gyoza. I gave it a try. It's the frozen type. You can tell. Oh, and they're bite-sized. One plus here is that there is free unlimited miso soup (served out of a big pot by the back wall), with a giant bowl of chopped green onions too. I came here for dinner with my friend because I remember they serve great sushi.It is a small restaurant with a few small tables. The servers were friendly and we were seated pretty quickly but I did notice that there weren't many customers in the restaurant but they had many take out orders. I ordered the chirashi don for $16.95 it is on the pricier side but I was not disappointed. I had fresh large pieces of salmon, tuna, and octopus that were pretty fresh. I really did enjoy my meal. I would give this place a 4 star but when we when to pay they tag 15 or 18% gratuity on the bill. We were a party of 2 and I was surprised they did because it more of a fast food place.
