Having been a while since we've eaten at Kiyo, we were wanting some sushi in the Richmond area and this is the first place that comes to mind. We ordered a few things including their Sashimi Bento and upon arriving home, I received a few missed calls from the restaurant saying they had forgotten the sashimi! Of course I was disappointed but they were quite apologetic and suggested that I could return in the future mentioning this mistake and receive the sashimi. In the end we had enough food so it worked out but I missed the sashimi. In addition to the bento, we ordered: 1/2 House Special Roll - quite pricey for 4 pieces but these pieces were HUGE. We couldn't really taste what was actually in the roll but I could pick out some deep fried eel(?), negator, crab meat, avocado and more. The avocado was a perfect ripeness and the sushi rice was done very well. Overall quite happy with this roll! Negitoro Roll - one of the rolls I use to judge whether they use fresh fish and Kiyo passed with flying colours! Very tasty! Rainbow Roll - classic california roll topped with slices of sashimi and a spicy sauce. They were light on the sauce (appreciated) and the slices of sashimi were quite thick. Overall a good roll. Chopped Scallop Roll - a larger sized roll with fewer pieces but plenty of fresh scallops! Chicken Karaage - huge pieces of juicy chicken thigh. Not over fried and plenty of meat (compared to just batter and fat). Great rendition of a Japanese Classic. Sashimi Bento (Beef) - a dinner set with beef teriyaki (a bit tough), tempura, ebi sunomono and missing sashimi. Can't say I was too impressed. Overall, a good place for authentic sushi with delicious rice and fresh seafood. Their prices are not "cheap" but I dont feel like they've increased over the years too drastically compared to other sushi places. read more

3.5 I've had dinner here several times in the last two months. It's a hit or miss with some of the sashimi. This is a small restaurant that fills up quickly especially on the weekends. The seating in the back is quite tight but the bigger issue is the noise level at those tables making it seem almost cafeteria-esque. Hot dishes were okay. Service is good. Urgh we haven't had such chewy seaweed for a looong time and it almost ruined the meal , at least the sushi and roll part of it . For a " Special " assorted sushi set consisting of " Deluxe " nigiri and hosomaki to include farmed instead of wild salmon is questionable at best . Also the inclusion of hokkigai is a head-scratcher , and I'd rather have tamago instead . We came here for the sushi but ironically the yakisoba was the relative highlight of the dinner . Our reso was for 7:30 and we waited at least a good 20 mins or more outside , and to compensate us they provided free ice-cream at the end . Thanks to some Yelp reviews and a promising menu, I had lunch at Kiyo sushi a few days ago, and it greatly exceeded my expectations! I'm a fan of honest, traditional Japanese sushi that focuses on the ingredients, the preparation, and covering the traditional bases (with or without any "mango peanut butter" rolls), and that's exactly the niche Kiyo operates in. I had the wild sockeye salmon sashimi (it was perfect), and also the sabashiso roll (mackerel with shiso leaf) and negihama roll (green onion with hamachi yellowtail) . . . both of which are hard to find at typical Canadian-style sushi restaurants . . . and those were both terrific too. I was by myself and didn't have a stomach big enough to try ALL THE THINGS, but other menu items that rarely make an appearance on less traditional sushi menus: Blue fin tuna toro (the holy grail of Japanese sashimi), Mirugai (geoduck), Kanpachi (amberjack), ShimaAji (striped jack), Aji (Spanish mackerel). They even offer asari-bata (buttered clams), ika shiokara (squid innards), and chawanmushi (steamed egg), none of which I'm a fan of, but further reinforced their commitment to preparing the traditional dishes. In addition, the staff are kind and friendly, the atmosphere is charming, and this is absolutely a place I would take out-of-town visitors to who might be underwhelmed with my corner hole-in-the-wall sushi places. TL;DR: If you want a Trevor Linden Banana & Cheese Roll and that kind of stuff, go elsewhere. But if you want the freshest, correctly sliced sashimi and traditional maki like umeshiso, sabashiso, oshinko, etc, this is your place. read more

First time trying Kiyo for dinner since the sushi chefs are Japanese. Many of the items we ordered were over priced for what was offered. The yakitori (chicken) skewers were bland and lacking in flavor and the meat was dry...2 skewers for $7.50. The most ridiculous dish was the beef tongue...6 very thin and extremely small sliced beef tongue for $15. It was chewy and the portion was unacceptable at that price point. Spicy tuna sashimi again were small little chunks with sesame oil that overpowers the taste of the tuna for $16. Portion again so small. Sushi is just okay...the toro..tuna belly was very good and fresh but the tako...octopus did not look too fresh. Each piece is about $5! The only tasty items we ordered was the assorted tempura at $18...great veggies and 2 prawn tempura...the batter was light and crispy and NOT greasy at all. This was the only thing that was tasty. I am surprised why so many people like this restaurant because the value is poor and the quality of food is just okay and the portions are so so small for the price point. They have been around for 20+ years in Richmond and they strive for quality and everything I had tasted was fresh. Kiyo Sushi is tucked away in the Cambie Plaza mini mall in Richmond. We came for a visit in early November because I was intrigued by their menu (I'm tired of "Japanese" restaurants that only serve sushi rolls). The interior is somewhat small with various nooks and crannies and the restaurant filled up with diners by the time we left. We started out with an order of Ebi Sunomono ($4.75) with a plentiful helping of baby shrimp in the rice vinegar. Their sashimi offerings look good so I picked the Goshoku Mori ($20) which consisted of the following assorted sashimi: salmon, tuna, hamachi, madai (red snapper), and amaebi. The sashimi here is very fresh and one of the highlights of our meal here... especially the buttery hamachi. Their menu said that it was the season for matsutake (pine mushrooms), so we ordered the Matsutake Dobin Mushi ($9.50) which is served in this cute little kettle and consists of dashi broth, ginko, honewort, mitsuba, chicken, and shrimp. Usually when we order BBQ Salmon Belly ($8), we don't expect to get such large pieces. I liked the crisp skin and the fatty salmon pieces but I almost felt like the pieces were too thick. Next up was the Oyster Motoyaki ($5.50) served in-shell. Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer places (such as Kiyo) which serve oyster motoyaki in an oyster shell (as compared with some places that serve it in a small tin baking shell). Last up was the Assorted Tempura ($13.50). I was a bit surprised at how large this dish was and it contained a good assortment of items: 4 pieces of shrimp, 2 pieces each of zucchini, eggplant, red pepper, yam, lotus root, green bean, squash, and another type of yam/sweet potato. Not only was there quite a number of pieces of tempura, they were perfectly prepared with a light and crisp batter and served with grated radish (something that we only see at select Japanese restaurants) Overall, the food here is quite good with the standouts being the fresh sashimi and the tempura. I like the authenticity of the food and atmosphere this place provided, which made me feel that I was physically dining in Japan. My family and I decided to dine in on a Saturday evening. We got there right before it began to fill up. My dad picked this restaurant. We were seated very quickly and the tea came almost immediately after. Within a 10 minute time frame, we were asked three separate times if we were ready to order. We ordered a sashimi plate, BBQ squid, BBQ mackerel, a few rolls and an ikura nigiri (dad's fave) once we were ready. The server brought out a different sashimi plate than we had originally ordered. I didn't realize until we were a few pieces in. We didn't relay this information back to the servers because the restaurant was gradually filling up and they looked rather busy. The sashimi was fresh. I'm actually glad we got the sashimi plate we didn't origanally order because the other one wouldn't have filled us. Everything was good but my dad noted the ikura was saltier than it should be. The service is very prompt and servers are friendly. Went to Kiyo Sushi for lunch today for a change. Haven't had Japanese food for a while. All 3 of us had different choices. Aside from the House Special Rolls and Oyster Motoyaki, my friend's son ordered the Gyoza and Teriyaki Chicken Bento, my friend ordered the Sashimi Bento while I ordered the Unagi Bento. Their Oyster Motoyaki wasn't that great. The oil from the butter or mayo was sickening. After eating 2 of the House Special Rolls, she couldn't finish her bento and am I glad I ordered the Unagi bento because it came with miso soup, 2 slices of tuna, 1 slice of red tuna, and 2 slices of salmon, 1 prawn tempura, one slice of zucchini, one slice of sweet potato tempura, and some grilled unagi on rice. The tempura prawn were precooked and were just warmed up. I couldn't finish my rice but I did well for the rest. The tuna just melt into my mouth. I won't have minded if I had 4 slices of tuna instead of 2 slices of salmon. I prefer the tuna better than the salmon. There was something missing in the bento and that's the fruit slices that are usually in the bento box of other Japanese restaurants. The Customer Service was excellent. One of their staff returned my call as I needed to change the time of our reservation. I find all their servers were polite and courteous. Nothing to complain about their service. Negative: The chef should find a better recipe for their Oyster Motoyaki as I have tasted better ones, contents were more, and larger oysters too. Secondly, those prawn tempura were precooked and were just warmed up. Nothing like a freshly fried ones. Yes, I'd go back just to have the same bento. Authentic sushi lunches!! We come here once in awhile for lunch during the workday lunches. It's always busy (with a line up), so we come a bit later to ensure seats. This place is traditionally decorated, with simple wood tables and chairs, nothing fancy. Their prices are a little higher that usual, but the quality of food makes it worth it. I usually get their sashimi box, which includes yakitori, rolls, sashimi, prawn croquette, and grilled salmon belly, which also comes with miso soup. Sashimi is fresh, croquette done perfectly, yakitori is juicy, and everything else just tastes great! It makes the rest of my work day that much better!! Service is efficient, and food arrives quickly. They cater to many business people during the lunch hour so they are quite good at this. I've worked down the street on Cambie for the last 16 years and have been here a few times for lunch...many hundred more times for dinner - generally when I'm too lazy to cook. I stopped going for a bit when my daughter was born but have now started going back because it's a great place for kids - well...they don't seem to mind the kids. Sushi is fresh. Though I've had better quality. I've had marginally better value but oddly, all outside of Richmond and I'm not willing to drive that far for a spur-of-the-moment-don't-feel-like-cooking meal. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Richmond. They are authentic Japanese here. Which is a must - thus no all you can eat garbage quality. One thing I've noticed over the years is their price and how it's gone up steadily. I can't see them going much higher...check that...I guess they can but value right now is right on the cusp of being not worth it. You can get more bang for your buck at Gyoza King right now but GK has no sushi. Anyway, the service, the food, the atmosphere (for kids), keeps my coming back. If you plan to go on a prime night, make a res. If you go on a Saturday night, the Chinese restaurant next door tends to have weddings or something...and parking becomes impossible so be prepared to walk. read more

This place is either a hit or miss -- but that depends on what you order and how much you're expecting to pay. Miss: Most cooked food and rolls. I find the rolls have too much rice that loses the fish, not to mention that they are quite pricey. Hit: Get their daily specials. Your tastebuds won't be disappointed, but your wallet will. Hamachi toro is amazingly fatty and you just wish it would NOT melt in your mouth because you want to savour the flavourful goodness. Tip: Don't chew on this too much, or at all... It will probably be gone before you know it. Maybe Mackerel is one of their expertise because they serve different kinds of it; however it does come with a heavy price tag. Don't expect a huge portion for $20 + sashimi. They are sliced very thinly and tiny. If you have grown the taste for oily fishy seafood, get the fresh saba. They have changed how they make this nigiri - it used to have 3 slices, but now it's just 1. (YES 3 slices!) They sometimes have the rare o-toro, which comes at $6 per nigiri. It is a bit chewy and not very fatty like the regular toro, which is completely unexpected. Perhaps I haven't grown the taste for it? Then about 15 minutes to put in an order after trying to flag down 3 different waitrons. Then another 25 minutes for the food to arrive. Then 15 minutes trying to flag down the waitrons to pay, and I finally gave up and walked up to what looked like the station where they do the bills. 1 star. So overall at least the fish was fresh! This is the best sushi restaurant in Richmond. It's always packed and the decor is quite plain with tables packed close together. However, this is the best quality sushi and sashimi in Richmond. The food is authentic and thankfully does not have that horrible all you can eat vibe that's at most of the other places in town. I love their premium assorted sushi and sashimi plates - they have higher end fishes and are worth the splurge in my opinion compared to the regular assortments. I think their weakness is the rolls. They are a little heavy on the rice at times, but this is my favorite place to go. Reasonable price. Aside from your regular sashimi, nigiri sushi and tempuras, Kiyo offers a variety of home cooked dishes - Onigiri (rice balls), black cod hot pot, kawahagi (Dried Filefish), etc. It is always a delight when we come here because service is always prompt and friendly. Although prices are slightly higher, I don't mind when freshness is always guaranteed. Saba Sashimi - Mackerel (market price): This salty fish always wins my heart. Served with green onions and ginger & sesame sprinkles. Uni Sashimi - sea urchin (market price): Every year only a few months there are live fresh uni and this can not be missed. Golden slivers are gooey goodness. Kawahagi (Dried Filefish) 4.50: grilled and served warm with a chewy texture and served with chili mayo. I like them on their own. Tako Wasa (wasabi octopus) 3.50: a cold appetizer of octopus marinated in wasabi sauce that is tangy, spicy but not too powerful to mask the sweetness of octopus. Served with seaweed. Negitoro Roll 3.50 & Chopped Scallop Roll 4.00: The rolls were a little disappointing today. They were loose and although fresh didn't do anything for us. I really love the quality and cut of the fish here! This is easily the best sushi you can get in Richmond and the quality proves it! The Mirugai (geoduck), Uni (sea urchin's insides), and saba are fantastic sashimi choices (or you can just get a great sashimi combo platter...several to choose from if I can remember). I also am a fan of the rolls; if you are in the mood for a variety of rolls, get the Kiyo platter. It has quite a variety of things that just about anyone would find outstanding. We still haven't been here for lunch....I don't find myself out on that side of town all that much. But, when I do get out there, its on the top of the list. Oh, by the way, the staff is great. I've been going to Kiyo Sushi for about ten years now, and I feel very confident recommending it to sushi fans. It's NOT an all you can eat place, instead, it's a genuine Japanese family restaurant. The menu is excellent and there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is really nice too. The booths make for a cozy meal and are fun for kids. Overall I find the place very clean and comfortable. I've heard from some friends that the quality of the food has declined over the years and I agree to a point, however, I still think the quality of food is a lot better than the majority of Japanese restaurants in Richmond. I think it's hard for small restaurants to maintain their excellent food quality when they become so busy all time (and they remain busy for a reason; the food is great). I consider it one of Richmond's best kept secrets, in fact, I think that Cambie Plaza, the plaza where Kiyo is located is a hidden gem of its own. This is one of the very few and rare sushi restaurants in Richmond that is actually owned and ran by a Japanese. It's a short drive from my work so I've been here for lunch too. This is also the first Japanese restaurant we went to the first week we moved to Vancouver... and I have to say, YUMs. Good value, fresh yummy sashimi.. decent Vancouver service. Great lunch specials and they have those fun little booths that make for groups. Be wary.. there's quite a line sometimes. Save room for dessert and head to the Diary Queen across the parking lot instead. read more
