    Mango Roll Cake
    Kay F.

Wow, what a hidden little gem in Port Moody. No frills shop inside with no seating but loved their homemade treats. We tried one of their tea puddings as well as their mango roll cakes and did it hit the perfect spot. So fresh and it literally just melted in my mouth. Can't wait to come back here to try more of their goodies!

Still my favourite cake shop in Tricities! Can't resist the beautiful seasonal Nerikiri & Sakura Mochi. Satisfied both my eyes & stomach!

The strawberry daifukus that I enjoyed at home. $1.65 each.

Have been meaning to try this place but wasn't in the area until I went to the gallery bistro for brunch next door. Little unassuming place with 2 Japanese ladies working there. I ordered some daifukus. The mochi was soft and so chewy but I felt there was too much azuki bean paste (not really a fan) in them. I also got the royal milk tea and original Purin the royal milk tea one is super flavourful and good. The consistency is a bit denser than other Purin I be tried. I also got the Japanese cheesecake which has good cheesecake flavour. It is a takeout place so don't plan on sitting in. Nice benches outside in the area though if it's a nice day.

Not a lot of options when I came by pretty disappointing actually but the rice cake daifuku or very similar to mochi was excellent. It was filled with red bean and the rice cake itself was soft and tasted fresh. $1.10 each it was worth it. Small little Japanese bakery located in Port Moody. They also had match cookies and some rolled cake but I wasn't tempted enough to get it.

Some of their items can be ordered at La Chocolaterie in Richmond

This is a "Cakery", not a regular bakery. They don't carry things like bread. Have tried: Soufflé Cheesecake, Mont Blanc (chestnut cream), and Chocolate Banana Roll Cake. I liked the cheesecake best, followed closely by the roll cake. Mont Blanc wasn't as yay as I had hoped. I think I was thrown off by the huge loaf, since I've only seen single-serving ones before. By the way, all their cakes are that size (a bit bigger than a six-inch sub). For those of us that can't make it out that east that often, their custard puddings are available at Izumiya (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/izumi-ya-japanese-marketplace-richmond) in Richmond. Their roll cakes can be ordered at La Chocolaterie (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/la-chocolaterie-richmond) (inside Izumiya). The newspaper article in which I learned about this store, two years ago, mentioned that they have daifuku - a rice-flour and red bean paste-based Japanese dessert. Either they stopped making those, or were sold out both of the times I went. P.S. Yelp's survey seems to think it's a eat-in place, but it's not.

    Unassuming bakery!

I heard about this place though searching for bakeries in Port Moody. Upon arrival, the store front is unassuming- nothing fancy, in fact you may walk past it and never realize it is open to the public! No desserts or anything on display. I found out that they are actually a supplier for various Japanese cafe shops in Vancouver. There is no actual sit down place inside. They do sell a small selection of roll cakes, pudding and cookies. Most of what they offer is made to order. I picked up a matcha bean roll and matcha shortbread cookies. They were each delicious! I would come back again to try their infamous chestnut cake roll.

The chestnut cake .. So good and made fresh to order!

While their pastries/cakes are on the pricier side, the quality was really good. The dark chocolate raspberry mousse ($8.25) was decadent and rich without being overly sweet and honestly their canele tasted pretty much like the one I had in France! The matcha latte here (~$5.50) also was better (less milky and had a stronger matcha flavour) than some other cafes in the area. Overall, a pretty solid cafe in the Coquitlam area though you might need to check ahead for pastry availability.

My favorite is Soboro chestnut cube, sweet potato cube, Shio pan, mugwort mochi bun, mochi mochi bread and roll cakes. Cube breads are excellent items. Dough is very soft and fillings are great, especially Soboro chestnut cube's small chestnut pieces and crunchy soboro topping makes it addictive. Shio pan is very buttery , one of the best in town. I also liked Mochi mochi bread which had very chewy texture like mochi, but this time, I felt the one I had in the past tasted better. However, Rich bread was very good. The dough is similar to brioche with very rich, buttery flavor. This one is definitely better than before. Overall, I really liked their products. I've long heard about Korean salt bread and had been wanting to try. Maison mori offered a couple of salt bread selections. I didn't know which to get so I asked for recommendations. The staff wasn't helpful at all. "They're all good." She also said the bread is Korean style bread that is popular in Korea. Then I asked why use the Japanese word for salt, i.e. "shio". She then responded that the bread is Japanese style. Like, which is it? Korean or Japanese? After consulting Gemini AI, the two styles are fundamentally the same but the texture is different. Regardless of Japanese or Korean style, I got the original and black (squid ink). I honestly don't see what the hype is. It's essentially just butter roll with salt sprinkled on top. Lol.

Unfortunately, its quite hard to find marzipan in the lower mainland. So you can imagine that I was quite excited when I saw they had one on the menu. At first glance the chocolate drizzle on top looked too little, but it was just the right amount. The all butter croissant was perfectly flaky. I heated mine up in the toaster oven for a few mins. The amount of filling that was inside amazed me. However, it would have been more enjoyable if it was more spread out, instead of a "log" of filling. Also, after warming up the pastry, the bottom was extremely oily. So oily that it was literally dripping. The meringue on the Lemon Meringue Bar was a bit deflated and dry. The lemon flavor wasn't overly powerful. The Mango Bar, mango flavor was very mild. I would have liked to taste something a bit more prominent. Also, I didnt like thay they added so much sugar to the Graham Cracker crust. The Spumoni Bar tasted mostly of coconut, but the bar was super flavorful and tasty. The Cheesy Bar cheesecake texture was nice and light. The Fruity Bar was very tasty. Although I wouldn't say that it tasted like strawberry. I liked the crunchy texture from the white chocolate covered rice krispies. I liked the Matcha it could have used a touch more matcha, but I know not everyone likes a super strong matcha flavor. My top picks would be SpumoniBar, Matcha, and Fruity Bar. However, I feel that all of the bars could use more flavor. Additionally, I would like to note the fantastic customer service that I received. I had a dog with me and she has major separation anxiety. One of the staff members noticed us and was kind enough to offer to watch the dog while I quickly ordered inside. I would rate the croissants 4.5 stars, the bars 3.8 stars and the customer service 5 stars.
