I especially enjoyed the salted caramel donut. The staff were very friendly and super quick with getting everything packed up. The Blueberry cream was seriously the best cake I've ever had. I will be coming back every time I'm close to Steveston. I tried the blueberry cream + the hazelnut. Both were really soft and good. The hazelnut was rich and chocolatey, the blueberry was lighter and perfect if you have a sweet tooth. They have so many cake options and some other baking as well. My parents took me to their favorite bakery in Stevenson and this place did not disappoint. Their selection of baked savory and sweet goodies was vast. We came by for a coffee break and ordered a cinnamon roll and chicken curry empanada to try and both were delicious. The location is on a quiet street with plenty of parking and some indoor and outdoor seating which was super convenient. I was excited to try the blackforest cake, well actually donut, here after reading a Yelper mentioned the strong cherry liqueur. I am on a quest to find a good blackforest cake in metro vancouver, to match the best I had in a German cafe in Singapore (of all places). I figured I really like that version because it did not stint on the liqueur and the cake texture was fluffy soft with the right amount of cream and chocolate. I digress. I was looking for blackforest cake and did not see it. So I ordered the espresso chocolate fudge cake instead. Then I saw blackforest donut and ordered that too. I walked out of the bakery and went to the bench a few steps away so that I could take a picture of the goodies. The donut had a white frosting. I looked at it, feeling puzzled. White? Blackforest? Luckily I usually take pictures of food I buy so that I can remember the description. I looked at the photos and discovered I was given the Earl grey donut instead. I was so disappointed as I really wanted blackforest so I went back to the store, intending to get the blackforest donut. However when I told the owner I was given the wrong donut, she immediately took the box and replaced it. That was great but then I saw her put the Earl grey donut on a plate and into a fridge at the back of the shop. I just hope that piece will not be put out again on the display case to be sold to other customers later. Though I did not touch or breathe over the donut and I only opened the box to take a pic and immediately close it, I will still be very concerned about the hygiene since it has left the shop. That said, the blackforest donut was not bad. I did not really taste the blackforest part of it but the donut texture was nice. It was cake like and fluffy soft like a sponge cake. I did not really like the cream or frosting. The espresso chocolate fudge cake was the thinnest slice I ever had from a cake shop. I did not like it. The fudge was had an oily creamy taste to it. Their donuts are absolutely fantastic. Try the earl grey donut (best paired with london fog; or if that's too much tea, have it with coffee). Just the right sweetness; really great texture to the donut (it's not chewy like crispy creme but more of a cake structure). There is really a complexity of flavoring at play here with the novelty flavors. Do be aware of the Black Forest cake: the cherry liquor is quite strong. Have heard great things about the bakery from friends, and was eager to try it out. The price point is excellent (especially if you buy five pieces - they give you a sixth for free) and genuinely can't be beat. We tried a variety of cakes, the matcha cake, the matcha cheesecake, the mango cake, and a few of the chocolate ones (can't recall exactly what they're called), and while the mango cake was quite good, the cake portion of both the chocolate cakes and the matcha cake was a little on the dry side. Maybe it was a one off, but the cake portion was definitely more crumbly than anticipated. The mousse helped to make up for it, but it was a little disappointing considering the good things I'd heard about these cakes. Extra points for enforcing social distancing and making sure that patrons felt safe and respected space between one another. The layers consisted of dark chocolate, cream, and sponge cake. Second cake we got was the Bailey's Dark Chocolate Cake. I preferred the Bailey's cake as it wasn't as sweet as the triple chocolate mousse. Both cakes were very fluffy and dense. Situated in a quieter part of the touristy village of Steveston, this small bakery is a true hidden gem! We had heard good things about this place before so we stopped in today to satisfy our sweet tooth with some fresh baked goods. The 2 slices of cakes we had (Caramel Crunch and Tiramisu) were rich in flavour, without being overly sweet. My fave was the Caramel Crunch - I loved all the crunchy bits! The ham & cheese croissant was delicious as well. Ask for it warmed up! Nice and bright ambience, but the indoor seating space is quite limited. Diplomat Bakery has been operating in the Steveston Village area for as long as I can remember. I've tried their tiramisu cake a couple of years ago and honestly, thought it was average. I decided to come back to give it another try! It's good to give second chances, right? Right off the bat, service needed improvement. The girl operating the cashier did not smile one bit. She was standing there playing with her nails. I was deciding what to order and asked her if the matcha latte was available in both hot and cold (some cafes don't offer both so I wanted to make sure) and she looked up from playing with her nails, paused, and replied "yes" in a way that made it seem like it was a stupid question. Then she went back to playing with her nails. We ordered a matcha latte, hazelnut cake, and ham and cheese croissant. Matcha Latte - I enjoyed this! This was hard to mess up since was just matcha powder and soy milk (I asked for soy milk and no sugar). Ham and Cheese Croissant - My bf said this was quite yummy, but would've been better warmed up. Hazelnut Cake - I was a little surprised that this was quite small. I wish there was less cream and more cake. The shortbread cake added a nice crunch, but was a little hard. This was mediocre. The bakery is small inside - 3 round tables and a few window seats. My biggest pet peeve is that the cafe only has two outlets (I could find) and no wifi (only Shaw Open). But they also have some tables and chairs outside. That day, it was a bit windy, so we decided to stay indoor. They have a variety of cakes and I quickly settled down for their tiramisu (Mascarpone cream cheese, vanilla sponge cake, espresso-soaked lady fingers) and my friend got their Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake (Dark, milk, and white chocolate mousse, chocolate sponge cake, coated in ganache). My friend made me try the Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake and that was a big mistake...! Because I ended up liking that cake more than my tiramisu... I even regretted ordering their tiramisu! Don't get me wrong, I'm a big big lover for tiramisu and there was nothing wrong with their tiramisu either. In fact, it was pretty good! The sponge cake was not dry at all, the layers were flavorful yet not overly sweet. However, there wasn't anything that made it special or standing out as compared to their Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake (I can't believe I'm saying this since Tiramisu has always been my all-time favorite). I normally don't have a sweet tooth but I would eat a whole Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake by myself! We were walking aimlessly around Steveston and happened upon the new location of the Diplomat. All I can say about that experience is that the place was busy. There was definitely a line out the door! All we wanted was coffee and we stayed. The coffee and rum balls (some sort of delicious baked, rum infused cake-like half confection, half doughnut) were delicious and rich. I thought I may need to stay away from this place! It was my birthday very recently. Guess what? My birthday cake was from the Diplomat Bakery! The chocolate gnache cake was easily one of my favourites. after hearing some rave reviews of the cakes here, decided to grab a few for my birthday! with a buy four get one free promotion, we obviously left with 5 slices for 3 people :D Of all that we tried, my favourite was the hazelnut cake it has so many layers of amazing semi-sweet and fluffy sponge, a good crispy and contrasting dacquoise and a not too sweet hazelnut cream. the best is that the sponge is really light and the whole cake doesn't feel dense or too decadent similar to asian bakeries. definitely recommend! baileys white chocolate was okay... again, not too sweet and had a nice flavour but i couldn't taste the baileys, just white chocolate. cappuccino cake was also one of my favourites. the mousse is really light and the sponge, like the rest of the cakes, was fluffy but still delicious. nice chocolate base on this one with light coffee flavour throughout. tiramisu was scrumptious with layers of sponge, marscapone and coffee flavour. I'm just going to keep saying it but, again - fluffy, light and not too sweet similar to all the other cakes. mango cream was the last one we had and it was the one with the most layers but surprisingly not my favourite (i think i just really like chocolate). there was a layer of shortbread, cheesecake, cake, mouse and then more cake. it was a bit sweeter than the other ones but a great choice for fruit lovers. also, the different textures and flavours make for a great bite! finally, i highly highly recommend this place. i hope to try their other cakes as they have MANY choices! its a far drive from central richmond but really really worth the time and effort. read more

I'm embarrassed to gift this as a birthday cake later. $40 (for a 7 inch cake) , looks uglier, skimpier and cheaper than if I bought it from Walmart. I was disappointed with a birthday cake months ago with their Red Velvet cake (dry, crumbly, tasteless, and barely decorated), but thought I'd try out their Strawberry topped New York cheesecake this time. $40 for a thin measly layer of strawberry jam that barely covered the top, half a strawberry, and undercooked plain crust. I heard about Diplomat Bakery when it first opened a couple years ago. It was a little bit out of the way though, so I hadn't had a chance to visit until now. It's really more a cake shop than a bakery, although they do have an assortment of breads and cookies. The coffee was good, and the prices are eminently reasonable, ranging from $3.50 to $4.50 for a slice of delicious cake. Tree's Organic charges about $7 for a slice of cheesecake, so I was surprised by the relatively low prices here. The service was epically bad though. I was actually offended for the first minute or so by the awful service. Usually, I expect coolly competent, disinterested service from baristas and bread shop staff. In some places, I actually get a friendly albeit fake smile and some patience. None of that here. Instead, I got this spectacularly passive-aggressive customer hatred and loathing which I usually associate with unhappy gas station attendants on a cold, wet Vancouver evening. After watching this level of customer grief for a few minutes, I couldn't help but start laughing. It was so atrocious at so many levels that it was beyond humorous. I used to work in a coffee shop before, so I am familiar with the trials of early mornings, long shifts and disagreeable customers. Diplomat Bakery is located beside a marina, an industrial park, and a small residential complex. The sparse population of the neighbourhood would seem to make it difficult to maintain profitability especially during the cold winters when cyclists rarely pass through. It also closes relatively early at 5pm or 6pm most evenings, so students won't be coming here for studying. I'm amazed that the shop has stayed in business so long already.
