Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux
Shonah M.

Hello new year 2024, new beginnings, new look, eating healthy food & going to the gym everyday ... hold up wait a sec ... nah! Hee. Gosh what can l say ... get the Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux & the Milk Chocolate Passionfruit Cake. That's all you need in your life. Lucky me to have noticed a FTR post by local Yelpie Marge B. Because I was in Coquitlam for a new years eve celebration, I knew I better check out Pourquoi Pas, or I'd regret it big time. Absolutely no regrets - presentation & taste were absolutely on point = 10/10. PP is a tiny bakery with limited seating. Recommend take-out & going directly home with your goodies, cause they're very delicate. Located in a small strip mall 3mins from the massive Coquitlam Centre Mall, call ahead to check availability - the pastries will sell out. Staff are friendly & informative. Best wishes to y'all for 2024.

Great addition to the area. I work in the area always looking for good bakeries. I've been here before highly recommended by one of my clients. The pastries are amazing, buttery, and flaky everything you want in a French pastry, I've had double baked almond croissant ( a local fav for a reason ) the french onion pull apart was one of my fav which was recommended by the staff working. You cant go wrong with the classic butter croissant. The caramel coconut apricot danish was delish. You cant go wrong everything tasted yummy! The lady helping was also lovely and very patient with me. My second visit I received a gift card so I wanted to pick four pastries. The cafe is cozy has several seating inside and out. Located at a strip mall with plenty of parking. I haven't tried the coffee but I will next time.

St. Honore croissants This was so good! I loved the smooth and delicate cream in addition to the flavorful vanilla custard. My favourite thing about this was the croissant! I absolutely loved how buttery and flakey the croissant was. The only thing I didn't like was the sugar on top of the choux because I felt it tasted burnt but I am aware that it does have a deeper caramelized taste that I am just personally not a fan of. I would definitely come back to try some other pastries. the store is also soo cute despite being very small. They had limited seating inside and some tables outside as well but it's starting to get really cold so I don't recommend sitting outside as that is what my friend and i did. However! don't be concerned if you want to get takeout instead because their packaging is soooooo cute. this place is definitely a hidden gem in Coquitlam and a must visit!

Such a cute gem of a place in an unsuspecting area. It is small and cozy. The pastries and cakes are delicious.

Matcha black sesame cake

I was pretty excited to finally get cakes from here, since it's my 3rd attempt (they're usually sold out of cakes)! I love their clean quaint storefront, with it's warmly lit interior and glass showcases of their pastries. Staff are friendly and not pushy at all, I took my time reading through all the descriptions before deciding what pieces to get. I got their Mont Blanc, hazelnut roasted banana choux, and a matcha black sesame cake slice ($7.85 each). Beautifully crafted cakes and aesthetically pleasing, the attention to detail is evident here. Our favorite was the matcha black sesame, as it had rich sesame flavor which paired well with the slightly bitter matcha. The cookie bottom added a nice texture and was delicious as well. The Mont Blanc had wonderful nutty flavors and overall well rounded. However, the chestnut on top was super hard and dry, it was difficult to chew. The chestnut cream also looked a bit dry, as if it had been sitting out for quite some time (I bought these around 2pm). Again, the cookie bottom was flakey and paired well with the cake. I was a quite disappointed with the choux because the flavors were a bit odd and the choux was soft (I expected a little crunch/flakiness). The hazelnut mousse was smooth, rich, and amazing--like having a Ferrero Rocher in mousse form. However, the candied banana was mushy and the slightly sour taste didn't pair well with the rest of the pastry. I hope to try the other pastries next time, maybe today was just a down day for them, since I see so many raving reviews and they sell out so often!

I recently ordered a cake on their website for a birthday in the family. The ordering process…read moreonline was super easy, straight forward and simple. No issues there. As someone who is dairy free, I love the fact that they had a dairy free option for the cakes. When I arrived to pick up the cake, the service was wonderful and quick. I was able to grab the cake with no issues. The space itself is gorgeous and bright. There are a few tables for seating area and I noticed they had a ton of other desserts to choose from (if I recall correctly, they had a vegan option too). I ordered the double chocolate flavour cake. I couldn't eat it unfortunately as I am dairy free but here's what my family said: they all really enjoy the cake and loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It was just the right amount of sweet. The only thing that I guess my family preferred was they felt the cake was too dense (they preferred more sponginess) but other than that, it was really good. No complaints. I'd love to come back again soon and try their other desserts.

First time to this location and their goodies were just as good as the Vancouver location! Got the…read moremini cheesecakes and tarts. They have a "Buy 5 get 1 free" deal and you can mix and match between these 2 categories. For the mini cheesecakes, we got the mango, ube, and passionfruit. My only critique is that the ube is not "ube" enough. (Being Filipino, I know the ube flavour well and while the colour was there, it wasn't standing out enough, in my opinion.) For the tarts, we got the chocolate raspberry, lemon yuzu pistachio, and the raspberry mango. I love pistachio flavoured anything but I personally did not like that flavour combo. Maybe if it was on its own, it would've been better. Almost forgot that I also bought a slice of the coconut pineapple cake! Lots of fresh pineapples in the layers. Perfectly sweet and the cake slice is a good portion for sharing with someone if you're wanting to try other sweets. Overall, everything else was great! The staff were friendly and it's a cute little place.

Damn wow! I saw a Sailor Moon cake and cookies at a friend's birthday party and had to find out…read moremore about where she got it. Gamers, movie, cartoon and anime fans alert, you're gonna love this cake designer. Bad Ass Cakes is based in Vancouver, BC. Their Facebook page says their location is in North Vancouver, but their location is actually in the central Vancouver area which is convenient and accessible to everyone. The page is www.facebook.com/forBadAssPeople. I'm a total gamer and anime geek at heart and was excited by what I saw. The creator designs cakes and cookies with themes like League of Legends, Sailor Moon, Iron Man, Star Wars, MineCraft, Portal, etc. He does fashion and regular custom cakes too for weddings and birthdays, and cakes at EXP Restaurant + Bar (another favorite venue of mine). When my gf unveiled the cake at her birthday dinner, all the guests (and myself) were really surprised at how gorgeous the cake and cookies were. The designer made a pink Chibi Moon vanilla cake with pink icing inside, and the exterior was made with fondant. It was high quality tasting fondant, and tasted like a delicious marshmallowy flavor. The fondant was not overly sweet (which other bakeries tend to do) so it paired very nicely with the cake. The cookies were super cute, they were shortbread cookies that were chewy and soft, and the icing was also not overly sweet. Everything tasted good and I highly recommend Bad Ass Cakes, especially to those who love games, anime and movies if you're looking for that extra special custom cake! I want one too now. The photos below are hers, since mine came out too blurry with my crappy phone cam. I received permission to use her photos for my review. I was there physically at the party.

Tishin Bakery

TISHIN ON A MISSION…read more Nothing beats a good old fashioned mom and pop shop. And for those who are keen on Persian pastries and other goods, or those who are just into trying new things, then this place is for you. It appears Tishin is on mission to culture Westerners while living the Canadian dream. When you walk in you might feel claustrophobic with all kinds of grocery and imported sundries from the Middle East region surrounding you. All the merchandise was tightly stacked up and down the walls, and packed in the shelves, within the relatively small area. There's even a cold case they managed to squeeze in there with fresh refrigerated foodstuffs. On one half of the store there are pastries galore. The sweet treats fill the display cases and stacked full on top of the counters. I'm in awe of the variety of different items and how much is on hand. It begs the question...How do they produce so much?? There's gotta be some elves, or smurfs, or oompa loompas, or mice named Gus Gus, or some kind of helpers behind the scenes baking like the wind. The pastries are generally pretty light in sweetness and in density, unlike the heavy, highly sugary baked goods that we are used to, which makes it perfect to eat with the Persian tea (Yes, they sell that). You can tell that care and precision went into all the lovely bakery items. The woman working the counter, presumably the owner, was a reflection of the pastries. She was lighthearted and sweet and eager to help you fill your pastry-lovin, pie hole. If you are open-minded and want a taste of the Middle East without the expensive plane ticket, then travel to Tishin.

The place is jam packed with goodies that look intriguing and delicious. Once you walk into this store you will be undoubtedly be hit by the fragrant aroma of their pastries. Your stomach will immediately make room for dessert. Apparently talking to the owner, they have been at this location for 8 years!!! Yet I have never heard of them...perhaps their core customer base is the Iranian community. I kind of bumped into it by accident. Their pastries are sold by the weight. Interesting concept. The dozen of bites we ordered came to be less than 10$. Good deal. Iranian desserts is very unique with all sorts of spices!!! Colour and taste profile one normally not associated with desserts. Great service. Delicious and interesting pastries. Great price. Must try!
