Went to Anna's this morning at 945 am to find completely empty display cases. The shop worker says they haven't gotten their delivery but to come back in 30 minutes. The shop opens at 930am. Strange way to do business. Apparently this is normal, so why open. Then she asked if there was anything I was looking for, maybe it will come in the delivery. From the website, I chose the mini mousse cakes and was told they don't make them anymore. Update your websites. Opted not to wait for the delivery, unpacking & stocking of the display cases. Not worth the drive, will go elsewhere in the future. read more

Anna's has been around for ages and the reason is that their pastries, cakes and buns are just so yummy! Not the overly sweet and heavy offerings at most western style bakeries, but the light, fresh and delightful Hong Kong style that just satisfies the palate. Another plus is that Starbucks and Bonjour Banh Mi are right next door - thus one can have a great Banh mi, coffee and dessert just by hanging around this block - nice!! I ordered a birthday cake in the morning and right on time at 2:30 it was ready for pick-up. Great staff who's been there for years and who always seem to welcome you like an old friend each time one comes. And oh, if you're around there at 5;00 pm, you can get 20% discount on your cakes/buns - thus ensuring that their product is fresh each day. Highly recommend!! read more

They have really good chinese chicken pot pies. As well, their cakes are fresh, made daily. You have to come here early to get your pick. They tend to sell out quite fast but they do make couple batches a day. So no worries. Unfortunately, I sometimes wish they can open later. They closes early, so unless you come here right after work or you will just have to miss out. Their staff are friendly. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is the Chinese bakery of choice for my work area for their selection of pastries, sweet or savory. This place has a ton of traffic right beside the Starbucks on the corner of 39th and Cambie. I see they have caught up with the times and now take debit. Usually my boss comes in here to pick up two box of treats for our office, and they are pretty consistent, and good. I do like the curry beef puff pastry they have here, I haven't run into their apple turnover, which I liked so much in their Burnaby location. In terms of Chinese bakeries, Anna's rates way up there as one of the best, not just for the individual servings, but also for their cakes made to order. Whether it is a birthday, or any other festive event, they have it covered, some popular favorites are chestnut (not my favorite, due to the paste), fruit toppings, and chocolate to name a few. Just remember that Anna's, because they also know they are rated high up there come with a price tag. They are not cheap, and you can go in here and spend a good chunk of change. They have sales of items after a certain time, I think 5, or it could be 6. With this place you know the cakes aren't too sweet, just right for my palate, and they have always been dependable for that. This is my go-to bakery for buying a birthday cake. They never disappoint (mango mousse cake is my and my family's favorite) and service is great! The other day, I called the morning of, right when it opened to place an order for mango mousse cake. The staff said they'll have to check with the bakers, and that they'll try to accommodate, but it might end up being a mango-strawberry cake. I replied as long as it has mango, I'd be fine with it. When I went in to pick up the cake before the store closed, they let me know it worked out and I was able to get the cake I wanted! As usual, the sponge cake part was extremely fluffy and the mango mousse had the right bounce and mango flavor. I've been a fan of Anna's since I was a preteen! My top three favourites are the Strawberry / Mango Mousse Cake, the Chocolate cake, and the Chicken pie! Okay wait ... it's a tie between the Chicken pie and the Curry Beef Pastry. I notice lately though that some of the recipes have changed. The chocolate cake I once knew and loved is not the same. STILL very yummy, but not the same as before. They changed the sprinkles. That makes a huge difference in the way the cake tastes. This location is smaller than the Broadway location, therefore has less to choose from but still solid pastries!! read more

They did not have the item labels for the bread on the counter and the cakes in the fridge so we needed to ask them what they were which wasted time for everybody. However, when I tried to ask a cashier about them, the other cashier told her loudly to continue to key in the prices. She was rude to stop her coworker from helping us, the customer. Also, our cashier did not ask us if we wanted anything else before she started to key in the prices into the cash register. Normally, the cashier would confirm my order before proceeding to payment. We found out later that they did not give us the pineapple bun that we requested. In addition, the fact that they had some items at the rear of the tray in the fridge was odd because we were not able to see them unless we bent down. Does that mean they did not want customers to get those items? They seem like they just want to get the customers out ASAP. The quality of their products went down significantly. The taste of the green tea for their green tea cream puff was not as intense as before. There was only a hint of coffee taste in the coffee bread loaf, and there was no coffee taste in the coffee sponge cake; the coffee taste was only in the coffee buttercream. The chocolate cake was sweet without much chocolate taste. The tiramisu was just a cheese mousse cake without any taste of coffee, chocolate, or alcohol and the cheese was sweet. Also, it should not have shredded coconut on the side of tiramisu. The Swiss napoleon was just a coconut cake with pastry sheets on the top and bottom of the cake; it was not a napoleon. They put it behind the walnut napoleon on the same tray without name tag and the cashier only informed us about the Swiss napoleon but not the walnut napoleon. It was confusing that they put different items on the same tray while they looked similar without name tags. I would not return even if they have the discount; It is a waste of money. P.S. Their 20% discount after 5pm was not advertised on the window; you would not know if you do not go into the bakery. read more

Great location though the parking sucks a bit--busy area w/ Starbucks, Vancity & CIBC plus the apartments above, unless you're a sharp parallel parker like me, then you could find some on the side streets. I call in sometimes late in the day 3-ish to see if their famous egg tarts are still lying around, & their raisin bread plus their plain version, is quite plump when they're just out of the oven. smaller store, but good service, if you place your birthday cake order in the morning by 10am, it's ready for pickup by 4pm-ish. The cakes here are so light and fluffy. They are sweet but don't feel like they're giving you instant stomachaches. In particular, I recommend the mango cake. This is such pleasant departure from the boring cakes you get at a supermarket. Try one for your next birthday or office party. People are always asking me where I get them. Easily some of the best in Chinese baked goods and cakes. This long established cake house has brought me many celebratory cakes. If you're looking for a change of pace from typical Western cakes, take a stab at any of the cakes they offer here. Most of them are lighter in both density and taste. They give you that taste of sweetness without making you think your teeth are rotting out and that you have to go in for a dental cleaning the next day. Anna's is an oldie amongst the handful of well established Hong Kong style bakeries of decent quality. The specialty here is really just the cakes -- the mousse cakes being one of the best. The strawberry and mango mousse is excellent, which is actually made with significant amounts of fresh fruit instead of being comprised entirely of some artificially flavoured mousse mix. Another good one to check out is the coffee flavoured cake, in all available forms -- from their plain coffee sponge cupcake, the coffee Swiss roll with chopped walnuts and coffee cream rolled up in the centre, to their coffee layered cake. Geez.....just writing about it is giving me mad cravings already! It is most notable for the strong coffee flavour in their moist sponge and especially the coffee cream.....and I've had my fair share of bland ones. Normally all cream is scraped off the cakes I eat but when it comes to Anna's coffee cream, all fear of fat and calories is thrown out the window, at least temporarily, until I inhale every bit of it. No joke. The egg, coconut and fresh fruit tarts are also pretty good. The buns and bread are honestly very 'meh' -- definitely have had better ones elsewhere in terms of taste and appearance by the way the buns are shaped, ingredients used and such. There are much better places to hit up for that. But it is absolutely a worthwhile visit for the the cakes, which are sold whole or by the piece. Oh, and these guys actually accept debit and credit card payments, which is a rarity for Chinese bakeries. read more

I came across this Asian bakery in my travels and decided to pick up a cross sampling of cakes, pastries & buns to take home. As a rule I have found the pastries from Asian bakeries to be less sweet and lighter in density than their European counterparts, and this held true at Anna's. Although everything looked remarkably beautiful, there was nothing that stood out taste-wise as needing a second try. Particularly intriguing was what I believe they called a Cappuccino Tart. The tart filling had this really bizarre consistancy like Crazy Foam (google this youngins who don't understand the reference), albeit a Crazy Foam with a nice subtle coffee flavor. I'm not sure that they are using premium ingredients to produce their goods which might explain some of deficiencies in the end product. I'll say that Anna's is a lot of flash and just some substance and I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. read more

You'll be a fan of Anna's if you like airy-fairy Chinese-style fruit cakes -- the kind with immaculate layers of sponge cake with fresh fruit filling and light whipped cream. I prefer European bakeries, but if you are looking for cakes that aren't as rich/buttery and cloyingly sweet, then Anna's really delivers the best of this genre. There are also other baked items such as curry puffs. Yeah, carry this on the bus home and you'll have heads turning because it smells so delicious and tastes even better. Only the best place on the planet to get Chinese buns! I buy boxes of it, especially near closing when they have a discount. I came here one day while I was in Vancouver about 3 weeks ago. I stumbled upon this place after arriving at the oakridge mall I was walking up the street looking for something to eat and saw Anna's bakery right next to either a Starbucks or some other coffee place. I decided to walk into Anna's bakery and knew I was in for a pleasant surprise. I bought a pineapple bun, an egg tart, a coffee tart and a cookies and cream tart. I ate all of these items at different points of the day since this was a day trip for me. The pineapple bun is comparable to what you'd find almost everywhere else. The tarts, I thought, were delicious and correctly priced. The egg tart in particular took me back to SoCal. The filling and the tart crust were just at the right ratio and the taste had good consistency to it. The reason why I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is the seating area. It's practically non-existent, but I think that's largely because of the expensive rents in the area. read more

Love their chicken pies. They make a mealy crust like all Chinese bakeries do their chicken pies, so don't expect pie crust like a Swanson pot pie. And it works for them. The crust is so rich and their chicken and ham filling is yummy addictive. I also like their egg tarts. They make cookie crust egg tarts, which I occasionally crave and they do a great job with it. I liked Anna's famous chicken pie. It is tasty and filling. For the savory items, they are more lean. My boss will come and pick up a few pies for the office when she pass by this store. They don't make too many batches in the afternoon, so watch the time when you go there. They make fantastic cake. Their cake and dessert are normally less sweet than other bakery stores. In my opinion, it is healthier. I liked chestnut and mixed fruit cake there. The quality is there as they are one of the better Asian bakery stores out there. I recently ordered a large cake from Anna's to serve a party of 30 people. I got the fruit cake, which was a lovely white cake with cream and fresh fruit. It was a perfect summer dessert: light, creamy, and not too sweet. I do not like the thick buttercream that is so commonly slathered on white cakes, and there was none here. I come here once a week to buy treats for my kids. It's a great walk in our neighborhood and right next to starbucks - so hey, why not! The buns are always super fresh and uniform, though pricey. I went to Anna's after reading everyone's reviews and reviewing their website. For my birthday, I wanted a Black Forest Cake, which they listed in their fresh cream cakes. It looked very nice, but we were all surprised to find instead of a dark cherry layer, or cherries in the cream, there were chunks of red jello. Very firm, but not much flavour. Nice light sponge, fresh cream, but this was odd. On the positive side, we also ordered egg tarts which were wonderful. Short pastry and a light egg custard. The pastry was a bit thick in proportion to the custard, but both components were well done. read more

Favourite pineapple bun with custard filling! Not too sweet, texture of egg custard was smooth but not runny, tasted of egg instead of powdered custard, great cookie pineapple bun topping. I'd heat it up in a conventional oven and gobble it up with my coffee from the Starbucks next door. read more
