Cannot rave on more about their durian cake. Chunks of durian in between a white soft pillowy chiffon cake with white choc shards and mousse. A 6 serving cake is about $35 which is so easy to be inhaled by one person. It's divine if you're a durian lover. read more

These ladies courteously made my cake to order despite me messing up my online cake order. Oops! They were kind, friendly, and didnt make me feel (too) stupid for my mistake. They customized the cake while I was there and it was quick to boot. The passionfruit cheesecake was delicious and loved by all. Slightly sweet, fluffy, with a perfect amount of fruit and decorations on top. It was beautiful! I dont like incredibly sweet, dense cheesecake and this was made exactly to my preference (dont get me wrong, I'd still eat it, cause duh, cheesecake). The cookie crumb on the bottom was also really yummy and added a good mouth feel to the cake. Bonus, they gave us a candle for the birthday girl. Aww. I saw many many tantalizing items that I want to try next time, so I will be back. P.S. I ordered my cake online and took advantage of a 12% discount! I expected a very light cake, but it tasted more denser than expected -- it was more like medium light and it was a little sweeter than expected. The mango mousse was only available on the top layer and the bottom layer was just regular cake. The side of the cake could have been made better, as the assembly of the cake looked like it was rushed. I also tried their molten cheese tarts and they were very delicious and addictive tasting. A little bakery tucked in the metropolis mall. This review will be centered around the egg tarts as it was the only thing I had a chance to try here. I visited around 4pm and surprisingly they still had a lot of fresh bread and not a very long line. What caught my eye were the fresh flaky egg tarts. The pastry looked like it was ready to crumble the moment you bit it. In hand, the pastry shell was so flaky it was almost ready to break. The egg tart filling was very light and just melts in your mouth. It was just the right sweetness and had the proper blend of egg taste coming through. I love Chinese bakeries: the smell, the variety, the price and the quality. As you come up the escalators, you get a small whiff of freshly baked bread and boy does that make your mouth water. There are so many options, it's always hard to choose what to get but today I felt like having the Curry Beef Bun and the BBQ pork pastry. I bought few pieces of cakes and I only asked if I can have 1 little candle to go with it, the cashier (I supposed is a junior?) looked at the older lady behind the counter, and that lady gave me a stern face and said "cannot". I said, "what about I buy from you?" She said, "I don't know how to put a price to it. I will give it for FREE this time. BUT please DO NOT ask from us again next time!". Hey, I am a professional as well and in my thirties, can you not talk to your loyal customers in a kindergarten tone? I was quite upset. Ruined my mood for whole night. I'd rate the mango cake and hazelnut, chocolate and coffee rolls a 5! BUT. Other than that I'd rate it in the negatives. Why? Because the customer service is terrible! I came by to buy a mango cake for my dad's birthday and was super excited to purchase it. When it comes to Hong Kong style bakeries in town, Saint Germain may not be one of the cheapest, but it is definitely on the list of Vancouver's best in its category. Their locations are usually very conveniently located, in some kind of high-volume shopping centre (Metrotown/Oakridge/Aberdeen Centre). This one is right across from the Superstore. Perfect for a bakery fix after grocery shopping or when I get hungry from scoping the mall. SG offers an excellent selection of sweet and savoury: breads, buns, pastries, cookies, birthday cakes, sponge cake rolls, you name it. Where they really differentiate themselves from the run-of-the-mill is in the details. Workmanship of the the cakes, pastries, and especially the buns, is much finer than its competitors. The buns are always properly shaped, sized and do not look like they were slapped together like the cheaper bakeries. A look at the pineapple buns can be very telltale. The SG pineapple toppings are rather uniformly centred across the board, unlike a lot of other bakeries, where the toppings often flop to one side. That alone speaks to the care taken during the production stage. Fillings are ample and of good quality compared to many other bakeries I have tried to date. This is always where bakeries chintz out on. SG's cocktail (coconut) buns have noticeably more coconut in the butter/milk filling compared to many other places, with the filling occupying 2/3 of the bun, sometimes a bit more. So good! I have had way too many cocktail buns half-filled or even less. SG actually uses curried beef brisket chunks for their curry beef bun vs. some mystery ground meat that practically all other bakeries use. The few times I had their apple strudel/ pastry, it was loaded with actual apple chunks vs. filler sauce. Love it also because nothing is ever hyper-sweetened here. SG is not the cheapest, but for the tiny premium you pay over the typical crappy to mediocre HK style bakery, Saint Germain is still an insane bargain. The vast majority of their single items are under the $2 mark, with pastries as the exception but even those are nothing over $4. At those prices, I 'd pick up coffee treats from Saint Germain over any other place in a heartbeat. read more

I recently had a craving for some good Chinese bakery fare, and I happen to live near Metrotown. I've seen this place a number of times on my way into SuperStore and have always been curious - the outfits the girls wear are so freaking cute, and the bread always smells delicious. So this weekend, I decided to give it a go. It wasn't at all busy at the time I went, though I have seen substantial crowds other times. I guess the jewelry sale going on across the hall was distracting people! I decided on a pork bun, a coconut bun and a cheese bun - two each for me and the boyfriend. Under 8 bucks! Not too shabby at all. The cheese buns I gave to the boyfriend, who reported that they were delicious, so you're gonna have to take his word on those. The coconut buns were delectable - so rich and moist and sweet - mmm. The pork bun tasted great as I bit into it - the bread was sweet, light and fluffy...so I took another, and another...and finished it. There was no pork inside. I'm guessing they gave me a plain sweet bun - which was delicious. But I was really jonesin' for some pork! Oh well. At a little over a buck, I'm not complaining too much. I've been few times and my experience here is just okay. I bought corn mayo bun but the design of the bun was really stupid. It's like a donut shape with small hole in the middle, Corn & mayo just started to fall through that hole as I just opened a bag. it was also really greasy and I think they use margarine for this product. It's so greasy, bun was super shiny and super slimy. I could see all the excess oil in a package it was in(clear ziploc type bag).. Margarine was all over the bun and I think mayo was mixed with margarine as well. So it kind of tasted weird. I liked sausage bun and other sweets I've bought from here over the years. I dunno what it is. While Asians make delicious food, including traditional chinese buns, for me, Asians simply do not make good deserts and bread in my opinion unless they're copying authentic western deserts and not adding their own spin to the deserts. While these Asian bakeries may have great looking presentations, the texture, the body, the taste, the quality in their deserts, all seem to be lame. It's simply too light. I'd rather have jello and some coolwhip or whipping cream and some fruit on the side instead of these light deserts. As such, all the asian deserts I have ever tasted were very light and often fruity. I ordered a chestnut cake. I was wondering, "where are the chestnuts"? There was hardly any chestnuts in the cake and you could tell the cake was very light and unsatisfying. It was mostly light cream. I guess it's a matter of "protocol" instead of tradition to serve light deserts after a large meal because of just that, it's light. Being Italian, I am used to and expect the desert to be somewhat rich, not light. Light deserts do not sit well with me, yet for whatever reason, Asians love their light deserts. And that's ok; however, if you have a european name like SGB, I will be overly critical because your bakery name appears misleading to me. read more

Saint Germain is a Hong Kong style Bakery located inside of Aberdeen Centre, adjacent to H Mart. It sells a variety of bread, cakes, and chinese desserts. The display is particularly enticing, as everything looks delicious! I was craving something salty, so I went with the cheese and sausage bun.The exterior shell was crusted with cheddar cheese. The texture of the bread was soft (not as soft as some other asian bakeries though) and had an almost gummy like texture. The bread itself was subtly sweet. The sausage was just an ordinary hotdog, pretty average/standard in asian bread. Overall, this bun wasn't very good, average at best. I don't think I would eat this again. Egg tarts are always a hot item at any chinese bakery. These ones didn't disappoint, the texture shell was flaky and crispy. The egg filling itself was silky and the perfect median between sweet and salty. Overall average for a chinese bakery but still good, nonetheless. I also got a coconut pastry.The entire pastry is made out of coconut flakes, which lends an amazing aroma to the entire pastry. The dough is soft, sweet, and fragrant. Basically a coconut BOMB in your mouth. Fellow coconut lovers, you will die when you try this! Overall, Saint Germain is a pretty generic asian bakery, but bakes up some great cakes and buns! read more

This bakery locates in the middle of metrotown area, where it sits next to superstore. Can imagine tons of people walking by and also lining up for their baked goods. I like their buns, pies and cakes, especially chicken pie, Tuna Bun and Wife cake. The chicken pie is the big half rounded shaped baked pie with chicken filling inside. The thing that I liked is that they put leaned chicken instead of chicken with fat. This is much healthier to eat and showed their quality of work. Also, the cost is higher for the store too. This thing happens similarly to the BBQ pork bun. The meat is much leaner than other stores. The fact is that I don't feel too guilty after eating the pie. The tuna bun is a specialty food, as I don't normally see this in other Asian bakery shops. Only a few will carry this item. But the thing is that it tastes delicious. When the bun came out, they will be gone quickly. The bun has a square shape, and it's texture is flaky, and the tuna was mixed with their aioli sauce and herbs. That makes the bun very enjoyable to eat. Also, the bun is bigger than normal size. Will feel the weight afterwards! The wife cake is fairly common in Asian bakery shop. And I will get one when I visit the place. Also, check out their cake section. They make fantastic cake design - very modern style, colorful yet elegant overall. It is presentable to all aged groups. Saint Germain is a pretty easy stop, located right near one of the parking lot entrances in Metrotown. When I was in university it was one of my favourite stops on my way back from shopping, and when I'm in Burnaby I still love to go by. All of the items are at least good, though I really prefer their sweet offerings. I do enjoy the egg tarts and meat buns, which are consistently well-made. It's the cakes and such that bring me back. My two favourites are the macarons (which now must be purchased by the box, but are generally well-made in standard flavours - chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, strawberry, lemon, and pistachio) and the creme brulee. The creme brulee isn't quite the same since the top obviously doesn't remain crunchy, but the custard is absolutely delicious. The prices are pretty good, with everything being pretty affordable and the macarons being dirt cheap at $1 a macaron. Service is generally not overly friendly, but I've never had anyone act rude or unprofessional, and generally I've stopped by when it's busy, so it's understandable that they might not be chatty. It's really worth stopping by for something if you're in the mall. read more

I came out to Metrotown for a quick present-shopping and had a little time to grab something to eat that was looking for something small portion.... So I wandered near Superstore thinking there was a bakery that sells cinnamon roll (though this cannot constitute a lunch?) and stumbled upon Saint Germain. The baked goods look fresh and were nicely displayed with all the price tags. The minimum debit/credit charge is $5 so I had to buy more than a bun. Fine.. I will buy more for the family to share. I got two egg tarts, 1 taro bun, cheese and raisin bun, red bean bun, and BBQ pork pie. Each were under $1.50. The total bill was $8. Nice.. They packaged the tarts/pie in a seperate box so that it doesn't break, nice touch. The taro bun had plenty of fillings, creamy, meshed taro, that is smooth. Good bun-filling ratio. Don't you just feel cheated when you see a nice lookin' bun and you split it to find a loonie sized fillings. The pork pie was fresh, greasy, oily, and good. I would eat this again. The filling is not too salty and had good chunks of meat. The puff egg tart was only so-so. The pie crust was crunchy but the fillings had slightly sour smell to it.. Did they put too much citric acid or something.. The regular egg tart had crust that seemed burnt (very brown..) so I didn't get those. They've got a wide range of buns (from the pineapple buns, wiener buns etc, buttercream buns) and cakes as well, only quickly took a look though. One girl rolled her eyes at me when I asked to grab some bakery goods and told me in a horrible, harsh tone that I needed a number in order to be helped. In honestly, their sign in regarding the notice of their line up system is unnoticeable. Maybe should have made their sign BIGGER to let others know. Majority of the customers there also didn't know as well. The bun is dry and greasy all around. The beef in the curry beef bun was not even chewable. It's all the non digestible side cuts that doesn't even qualify as beef at McDonalds. This is the bakery beside Superstore. I have been going there for years, however, was finally inclined to write a review after my experience yesterday. There is a reason I keep coming back to this location....good pastries and awesome presentation of their little cakes. I love the flavour combinations and the fact that the desserts aren't too sweet. The lady at the til was super nice when she seemed apologetic that there were no macaroons left. My favourite items to eat are the pork buns. This has been my guilty shopping pleasure for over 10 years, it's good that I can express this in writing. Also, I found out after inquiring that you can get a 10% card that never expires once you purchase a cake $25 or over. I have seen the 15% cards also, but not sure how that person got that. I would give five stars if they had triple cheese toast available all day! These are too die for! -- speaking from a cheese lover point of view. :) I also love getting white chocolate strawberry cakes for my late night craving. The only down side is that they run out cheese toast quite often... Wish they make more of these so I don't have to drive all the way to Richmond to get them.
