The smash burger was very tasty although technically smashed i didn't get the Maillard reaction and there was no crust. That being said the beef was well seasoned, bun soft and fluffy, cheese melty and delicious and pickle tart to cut through the fat. Very good burger! I had seen some reviews for this place and was intrigued by all the goodies I saw in the photos. Unfortunately, when I stopped in they had almost nothing left in the display case. I got an almond croissant and a lemon tart as they were some of the only items left that weren't cake. Both of them were quite good, but I've had better croissants. The lemon tart was something I'd definitely order again though. Very good lemon flavour and not too sweet. Service was standard counter service, nothing exceptional there. There was a small lineup when I arrived, about 6 people ahead of me, but it moved fairly quickly. It was busy but not excessively loud. Seemed like a nice place to grab a coffee and a pastry with a friend. I just wish the parking situation was better. Very small lot out front and almost no available parking on the street. First time coming to the Royal Oak location after being a huge fan of the jubilee location for years. Its interior is small and cozy, but there's no seating inside. The way they decorated it is nice and simple. There are some tables outside, but very limited. They're super slow. It was a weekday at lunch time, there isn't a rush of people.. but they take their time. There were only two people in front of me who ordered one drink each, but my entire interaction from waiting in line to getting my drink took about 20 mins. The workers were nice, but seemed a little inefficient. Drinks and food were good-- about the same quality as the other location. Was introduced to La Foret when my office ordered their sandwiches for catering. The sandwiches were so good, I had to check out the actual location. This is a full brunch/cafe/lunch spot with so many items on the menu from specialty drinks, cakes, full brunch items, sandwiches and pasta. I usually don't enjoy how overwhelming and out of theme big menus are but La Foret made me want to come back to try out more dishes/baked goods. This time, we came for a very light breakfast, we got an americano, a golden apple oat latte, the banana cake and coffee bun. Everything was very good and tasty. Especially loved the crispy bits on the coffee bun. This was a $20 order. Parking is very limited at the restaurant. There are some street parking around the residential area. This is an odd location as it is at the of a cul-de-sac, but right near the Royal Oak skytrain station. You wouldn't really know it's here as you have to go off the walking path, over what was once railroad tracks and cross the round part of the cul-de-sac. The lettering on the outside could be more 'vibrant' as it is black, so it is blends into the black building facade. There are some food icons on the outside though, but you wouldn't know if it was a commercial bakery that only does large orders or if it's an actual customer bakery. It is in an industrial area. They do have a good selection of pastries, not as much as their main location since this is a small place. They tend to run out of some items by noon so if you want something, it's best to get it in the morning. I haven't tried their drinks yet, mainly been here to grab pastries before going home or just enjoy it there. Inside there is some seating by the window and some small tables. One thing I do find about the inside is that it tends to be warm in there. I usually have to take off my jacket and sometimes take off my hoodie/sweatshirt/pullover if I'm sitting inside. read more

That's always the most difficult aspect...anyone can put up a few lights and decor). But service is tough. Specifically, wait/line management. Huge line. Two cashiers. All it takes is one customer with a big order - or trouble with mobile pay - to hold up the line. This is what happened when I was there, and it was mid-afternoon on a weekday. I urge them to take a page out of Breka's **fantastic** management and have one person run the orders down the line with an iPad so customers aren't stuck waiting. I also recommend pickup notification (those things that buzz when your food is ready). And/or QR ordering and table delivery (though that adds cost to a business' operations). My coffee order was ready quickly, but the barista didn't call it out, so it was just left idling unceremoniously next to the espresso machine, as I sat and wondered which one of the drinks was mine. I guess I should have ordered an Americano, since on the menu it states that it's served hot or cold. My mistake. I just wish they suggested it. I came here as the first outlet on Jubilee was busy. This cafe near Royal Oak was tucked away at the end of the street with a dead end. Parking is limited with only 3 spots but you can probably find street parking. This place is much smaller with a few tables on the patio. It is more of a to-go place for your pastries and cakes. They also sell sandwiches and paninis which are pre-made in the boxes. Unfortunately they cannot heat up the sandwiches, only the paninis. The food was good. The quality was consistent with the main branch. The flat white I had was pretty decent. I did like the chicken cranberry sandwich which was on the sweet side. I also tried the matcha cloud croissant which was quite sweet too. It was huge and it would be good to share it. I had a hard time finishing it. The toasted whole hazelnuts added a delightful crunch to the soft pastry. This is a good place to just get pastries and cakes to go. Not really a place to meet friends and have a leisurely chat. They had the most amazing fruit croissants with a delicious buttercream filling, absolutely worth the visit! The service was quick even though it was pretty busy for a midweek morning. One small note: there were several tables marked "for three or more," which left a lot of smaller parties standing around and unsure where to sit. It might help if that setup was adjusted a bit. Back to my pastry reviews. La Foret might look unassuming from the front but it's one of the prettiest cafe I've been to in Vancouver. Serving Korean-inspired desserts (with aesthetic to match), this cafe is usually always full during the weekends. It's a counter service but the staffs were friendly and helpful in providing recommendations. My friend and I got blueberry and kinako (soybean) croissants. The pastries were definitely crunchier and airier versus traditional French croissants, but we felt that actually work well with the generous cream fillings. Also, La Foret managed to secure the ultimate stamp of approval from my friend: "Not too sweet". She did tell me not to buy the pre-made packaged almond croissant though, as it's apparently stale and did not taste fresh. read more

I ordered a blueberry supreme croissant and a salted caramel donut for the hubby. I loved my croissant, it has lots of filling and layers were well done. Not too sweet yet still indulgent. Hubby said that the donut was a tad bit too sweet but we're just glad there's a solid pastry place near us. I also tried their blueberry cheesecake ice cream and I enjoyed it. I've been on a mission to try out more cafes with a new baby at home and today's destination was La Foret in the Royal Oak in Burnaby. Easiest way to get here would be on transit from the Royal Oak skytrain station and there is even a little ramp area if you have a stroller to navigate the curbs and bumps. I got a strawberry cake slice and a cream pastry to go and have to say that both were delicious! They also have a points program that will give you a free birthday treat so also signed up for that while I was there. They have a small space outdoors with some seating which makes it a cozy shady place to hang out in particular during the summer. Will definitely be back with my little one! read more

Salted caramel and vanilla walnut. Limited seating compared to their other location. But still super cute. I'm glad they added this location. Came back several weeks to try another pastry, one of my fave pastry is almond croissant, saw several option but thought just stick to what you like, it was a bit of a let down, it was hard and borden line burnt. It's such a surprising, eye-catching cafe in a somewhat nondescript area. I dropped by on Thanksgiving and was pleased that parking was slightly more accessible compared to their other location. The shop is grab n' go but they did have some patio seating. The seating inside was awkward because the chairs were too short for the table/bar ledge. Other than that, the shop was aesthetically pleasing. They had an assortment of pastries and ice cream. I came specifically to try one of their brioche donuts. I loved it, it was chewy and with ample filling. I was definitely tempted to grab a few (note: 10% off if you grab 6 or more pastries). Although I truly love the atmosphere that Laforet offers, the sweets are just not up to my standard. The drinks are not the best either. I tried this nice lavender drink which I thought it was a latte but practically ended up being lavender flavoured milk. Very unappetizing. If you're a coffee fan the salted Nutella latte does sound good and it did mention having espresso. It's not really a place that I would indulge in lunch as I see it more as a coffee shop with some decent baked goods. The croissants look appetizing and taste crispy on the outside filled with cream and my personal favourite strawberries on top. The cream is bland yet overly rich at the same time so I ended up scraping some out but the croissant is nice with a sweet glaze. The service is fast for the most part but it can get quite busy at this location so you could be in for a wait depending on how elaborate your order is. read more

My favourite colour is pink so obviously I was thrilled to see the soft pinks used in their design! My favourite doughnut is the strawberries and cream one! I love the bright fruity flavour combined with the cream and it doesn't taste too sweet or artificial. The dough has that satisfying yeast-y SQUISH! I got four flavours of their donuts (black sesame, vanilla, strawberry yogurt and injeolmi) all were creamy, flavourful and lots of filling. Beautiful pinking ambiance, friendly staffs and I follow them on instagram they mostly update and post new or available foods they have. We though its hard to find a parking lot so we took the skytrain which is just 5 mins walk from the station but actually theirs plenty of space to park. Upon entering, I noticed that it was a grab and go place and that there's no actual seating. At this location, they serve brioche style donuts and pastries like croissants and kouign amanns to name a few and also sandwiches and hot items like rice bowls and crispy ham and cheese sandwiches. We got their strawberry yogurt and salted caramel donut and vanilla kouign amann. We thought the donuts were more on the dense and bready side in comparison to Mello and they had limited flavours. We also got their crispy ham and cheese and it was too much imo. It was heavily covered in panko which made it so messy to eat and made the sandwich very "heavy". The inside filling is also on the sweeter side ( I think they used some sort of sweet mayo/jam filling). Overall, I think the concept is nice but I prefer their first location better. read more

Oh wow, I absolutely loved the pastries from here! They're so unique and delicious! I finally got a chance to try their version of a supreme croissant (which they call a Kouign Amann here) and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I got their Pecan Vanilla Kouign Amann, which was my favorite of all the items I tried. The vanilla filling was so good and the croissant shell was crispy and wonderfully textured. I would get this again in a heartbeat and now want to try the other flavors. I also got the Injeolmi Cream Donut, which had a yummy and unique injeolmi flavor (like a sweet, toasted bean flavor) and was generously filled. Finally, I tried the Croissant Maple Yakgwa, which was flaky, sweet (but not overly so), and delicious. As a Korean, I especially liked these latter two items as they brought a unique spin to flavors I grew up with. I loved how they do not skimp on their fillings (the Kouign Amann and donut were abundantly filled) and the creativity of their flavors. This location is a takeout location (although there are a few tables outside), but it's definitely less crowded than the main location with lots of available street parking. I also recommend ordering online if you want to ensure getting the item you want as I heard they sell out of their popular items as the day goes on.
