The bag was filled mostly with savoury goods in it but we did get one baked good that seemed to be more of a dessert. When I picked it up, I inquired about whether there was any meat in any of the foods. The lady was kind enough to switch some of the foods for me so that it was all Vegetarian food in the bag. To be honest, we weren't crazy about every single item in our bag. For the price we paid though, I think it was still very good value and we did find at least two items in the bag that we very much enjoyed. So would I go back to Nana's Bakery? Absolutely! There was some kind of savoury pastry that had a potato filling in it. Loved that. Also, there was some kind of spiral pastry with cheese in it. Loved that as well. I had this place bookmarked long long time ago. I even talked about visiting it many times. The time has finally arrived. B, S and I were going for a walk in the area. We ended up walking over to Nana's. It is a small bakery but at the same time, it is a very busy bakery. It is super popular. We got the beef savory pastry (Borek) and oh wow. It was nice and flaky. Lady behind the counter is a grouch who gives smart a** responses to questions about their food, terrible tone and attitude. Completely ruined my enthusiasm over the food and experience. Will not return. Shockingly rude service. I came in here a while ago, on my bike, since it is off the bike route. It was convenient and food was ok. Returned recently, along with friends. I tried to look at the menu posted on a rear wall. Since I'm not familiar with this type of Eastern European food, I tried to ask the worker more about what was available and more about the food. She was beyond rude. Apparently, I was standing next to the counter, so I could see her, while I asked her questions about the food and menu. She shouted for me to go stand in front of the counter before she would give me any information, stating, "You're making me uncomfortable." It was so bizarre, I would have left without ordering, but did not want to put out my friends. Discussing with my partner later about this incident, it felt like racist behaviour to me (I'm non-white man). My partner was more generous and said "maybe she is just uncomfortable with men." Still left a very negative feeling and impact. Too bad because it does seem like an interesting place, with food and eastern european groceries. read more

I only noticed this place cuz their ad always pops up on my FB feed. I noticed they have roast lamb and I love lamb. It's kinda in a industrial part of town, off the beaten track for sure. The girl who served me was nice, she told me they have lamb on Fri/Sat and Sun. when I asked her about the availability. It was pretty damn tasty...the skin was a bit on the salty side but it was very moist and tender. They have a small parking lot and their is parking across the road. Great family run business! Small storefront, tucked away but with good signage as you approach. (I can confidently say I would never have found this place without Yelp.) They have a seemingly large bakery in the back. They sell delicious and fresh flatbreads (huge for $1!), pitas, apple and blueberry hand pies, pitas (meat combos and spinach, mushroom). Read the other reviews on the pitas - they're probably not what you're expecting but they are yummy! The mushroom was earthy and satisfying but I also really liked the spinach. The store offers their baked goods, some meat based meals, balkan groceries (I enjoyed browsing the neat and different items) . The desserts they had were baclava, custard style cakes, cookies etc., they all looked fantastic. Looking forward to picking up some Baclava up next time to try that out. After watching the 1998 film 'Cabaret Balkan' last night on MUBI, I decided the best course of action would be to bike to a Balkan bakery for böreks on my birthday. My first borek experience did not disappoint. Great value. It made me want to open a börek food truck, more people need to know about these delicacies. I am very familiar with spanakopita, spanikopita and I go way back, but it's less popular cousin, börek, remained a mystery to me until today. The Greeks must be better at marketing. My brothers partner from Bulgaria lamented how it's referred to as 'Greek salad' even though other Mediterranean countries also have similar versions of that salad. Anyway, back to the böreks... Favourites in descending order are beef, mushroom, potato, chicken, feta and spinach, then cheese. Try them, you will not be disappointed. Nana's Bakery specializes in pitas. These aren't your typical pita flatbreads if that's what you're thinking. These are filo pastries stuffed with either mushroom, meat, cheese, spinach, zucchini, sauerkraut, potato or salmon. I haven't had a chance to try them all, but the few that I tried ranges from average (sauerkraut) to amazing (meat or mushroom). The zucchini is worth a mention as well because it's delicious and I don't feel guilty since I'm eating my vegetables. Nana's also about 4 types of desserts including baklava, but I haven't tried them yet. Call ahead to place an order for pickup because these aren't always made ahead of time. When you walk into this place, it's more like a grocery store. They also sell pitas and other baked goods. The staff are friendly. English is ok but not great. My favourite thing to buy here are the pitas. I've tried many of them and my favourite pita is the mushroom one. It's packed with flavours and so yummy. I re-bake them when I get home. I'm gonna buy the frozen ones next time. Price is very reasonable ($2 each) for their fresh pitas. I can't wait to try some of their other baked goods. read more

These little pita babies are actually bureks which come in savoury and sweet fillings. The owner explained that bureks are usually filled with meat, but since he also fills his with vegetables and fruit, he calls them pitas to avoid confusion. I actually prefer to call them bureks because I don't see any resemblance to the pitas I've eaten. They're nice and warm and a steal at $2 each. I tried the beef, spinach and mushroom savoury ones. All were good and filling. They were even more yummy served with hot sauce, spinach/artichoke dip and mango salsa. I also picked two sweet ones, apple and cherry. The "pitas" are very good, even better when you take them home and put them in the roster oven for a few minutes, they get extra crunchy. I think they do mainly do wholesale orders as I saw I few restaurant vans outside. There are a few tables inside of you wanted to eat in. Outstanding! Nana's Bakery has truly earned its stellar reputation on Yelp. Perhaps dear reader, you are in the same position I once was: hungry, lazy, wanting to order from Skipthedishes but not knowing what to get. Suddenly, you spy the logo for Nana's Bakery. The word Nana sounds vaguely Indian to you, so you idly click on the restaurant. How wrong you are! Browsing through their website, you become intruiged by the Balkan spelling of some of the menu items. You think to yourself, "How could something with this many 'j's and 'k's not taste good?" You then head to Yelp, and see a plethora of four and five stars reviews, and suddenly you know. "Yes, Nana's is the chosen one." Seriously though, I didn't know what to expect from Serbian cuisine. Wanting to try a wide sampling of their items, I ordered the Pljeskavica beef, Ćevapi, a piece of the Vanilla Custard, as well as a Spinach-and-cheese stuffed savoury pastry. And may I just say, WOW! Each and every single menu item was incredible. The Pljeskavica beef was so hearty and flavourful. If you're a vegetarian, Nana's is not going to be the place for you. But if you love beef and you love burgers, imagine a burger the size of a small cake, bursting with roughly chopped onions, piled on top of freshly baked bread. The pita (if I can call it that) is divine. It's soft, but still kind of rough and chewy. I tried eating the bread with just the onions, and I was still wowed by how yummy the whole thing tasted. Now the Pljeskavica beef was bit on the tough side to be sure, but a quick google search revealed that that's the way they're supposed to be cooked (and with good reason, YUM!). The Cevapi beef was a bit softer, but every bit as delicious. And the savoury cheese-and-spinach pastry was still warm (after a 50 minutes drive) and soft as a cloud. If you're in the mood for a hearty meal with some heft to it, this is your kind of place. I can't wait to eat here again. And vegans and gluten free individuals? I always love coming to Nana's, as it is one of the best places for Yugoslavian food in Metro Vancouver. I came with a friend of mine for lunch, we ordered two plates of civape and two pitas (one cheese, one cheese and spinach). Our food did take about 15 minutes until it was ready but that was understandable because of how busy they are and how they make everything fresh to order. My only complaint was that they used to put a veggie spread with the civape (Ivar I think is the name) that they seemed to miss this time. Nana's also offers a wide variety of Yugoslavian treats such as Samo Ti chocolates, blue fanta and various smoked meats to name a few. If you look at the pita it doesn't look appetizing whatsoever. The dough is thick. Attitude by staff tends to be uninviting and quite grumpy. This seems quite common amongst Slav and Balkan places. I learned about this place from my Friend Steph. It's not appealing from the outside and understandable why it would be missed. I was able to find parking thank god. The minute I walked in I could smell the fragrance of baked goods which warmed my heart, especially since it was really cold outside. I got 12 pitas for lunch time as I am making some frozen "pizza pockets" via pintrest for the new year and wanted to use these for the project. Prices were surprisingly reasonable. Amazing food ( both meat dishes and deserts), really outstanding quality and taste, with friendly staff, lovely environment and affordable prices. They have pitas ( burkes) with different fillings - meet, cheese, spinach, and also sweet, small size for one person $2 only!!! And when you try it you are hooked. They have all Mideastern deserts ( also popular in Serbia and Bosnia) - tulumba, baklavas etc the best in town. They also have traditional "chevapcici" ( grind meet sausages) served in fresh baked bread with diced onions, and "pljeskavica" ( Serbian hamburger) etc... yummy! They also sell merchandise from different East-European countries. To make the story short, they are awesome and they do not change their standards for many years now, only getting better!
