Growing up in a Chinese family, bakeries like Maxim's is a staple for birthdays. I think went through the entire cake menu at least once every year. In Vancouver, it's easy to get caught up chasing the newest "it" spot but a recent stroll through Metrotown reminded me of why classics endure. I couldn't believe it was only $3.25 compared to the pricier and smaller portions at other bakeries. I got a slice of coffee cake and it was exactly as I remembered: pillowy soft sponge with perfect light cream. Sometimes "tried and true" spots are the best because they never let you down. Maxim's is pretty much an institution when it comes to HK style pastries. Parking is available in the Metropolis lots. The most convenient one is on the (formerly) Sears end, which connects right by the T&T. Staff are friendly and professional. The place is still run the old school way. Grab a tray and tongs (and try not to think about hygiene issues), and self serve. Pricing is reasonable, though obviously prices have gone up over the years. Because of the high turnover, everything is quite fresh. Totally brings me back to my childhood whenever I eat anything from the store. read more

Located inside the metropolis mall. Similar to 85 here in the US but a lot smaller. They don't have a wide variety, but what they do have looks good. We only grabbed a bunch of Portuguese egg tarts. But when we went up to pay for them the cashiers didn't really greet or acknowledge us. When they started to box the egg tarts, the girl dropped a good half of them face down onto her shirt. A good chunk of them smeared all over her body. She tried to continue to box them until she saw the look on my face - disgust haha. She didn't say anything, but I asked for new ones. They started to whisper quietly in a different language - probably talking smack. But I mean, would you eat them ? I'd stay away from this place if possible haha. read more

Solid Chinese bakery. They got parking in the plaza and while the store is relatively small, they got good selection. I personally like their HK egg tarts (custardy, flaky, yet set), though if you like the Portugese style, they have those too. Their pineapple buns have a nice crusty topper that shards on impact, which is fantastic. The bbq pork inside is deeply savory that plays a nice complimentary note. They also have a large selection of roll cakes, which are not too sweet. I have a fondness for jelly roll/cream roll cakes from my days as a kid, and they instantly bring back a hit of nostalgia for me. Definitely grab one of those if you like that kind of thing. Their hot dog buns are a bit run of the mill and mostly tasted like salt and fat from the hot dog, so that's something I don't recommend necessarily but everything else is definitely good. The staff were gossiping loudly in Cantonese behind our back when we were trying to browse. It was disturbing and the manager should not allow this; they could gossip during off hours. Also, they put a cart with boxes in front of the fridge that blocked us from taking the drinks from the fridge and made us difficult to browse. The place was already small. I like the cakes from Maxim's as they are not very sweet. The fresh fruit cakes are delicious. I also like the mini fruit tarts. The buns are nice too. Soft, fluffy with sufficient filling in them that you don't feel ripped off. I recently tried the curry beef bun and it was good. I was surprised.I wish they have luncheon meat (spam) with egg bun too. Unfortunately it is just ham and egg which is so not the same. It gets crowded in the evening and weekends. When you enter don't even think of it just grab a tray, yes the ones you see in the food courts trust me you'll need it everything is pretty affordable usually under a dollar per pastry except the cakes. I love the coconut buns, anything with red bean or taro!! If you like Asian pastries this place is for you! The white fruit cake are also delightful so light not too sweet. I always leave here with more then I planned on buying, its like the Costco of bakeries. Maxim's is an institution for baked goods that started in Asia. I wasn't aware that they were established in Hong Kong until one of my coworkers who happened to be Irish Canadian told me about it. She lived over there back in the 1980's and she said, "They were at almost every street corner!" As for myself, I've been eating baked goods from Maxim's since I started crawling. Hey, my first birthday cake was from Maxim's. That was when they had their first store at Chinatown in Vancouver. Now, they have expanded elsewhere to the suburbs such as Burnaby. They've been always reliable for baked goods such as fruit topped birthday cakes, buns that are either sweet or savoury, and egg tarts. I tried their coconut buns and it had generous amount of coconut filling and the bun itself was soft and moist. If you're a fan of coconut, you will love it! Their dark chocolate covered fruit tarts with custard and cream was quite tasty. The tart was lightly dipped in dark chocolate, so there wasn't much dark chocolate taste to it, but the fruit, custard and cream tasted fresh and flavourful. Like their mini danishes which are a good bargain and are a better deal than buying a regular size version. They have many types of buns, Chinese baked goodies, cakes and breads in addition. The mango cake I had there was good and not overly sweet. And the green tea bread that they carry makes for excellent toast. Interestingly I could not find this at the Chinatown Vancouver location when I went looking for it. As for the BBQ pork bun, it was okay but I felt that it was a little small and had less filling. TL;DR - DO NOT BUY CAKES HERE Bought my wedding cake here and upon receiving the cake my brother noticed the cake has cracking, holes, and marks all over the cake. When questioned they pretty much told him there is nothing they can do and go fix it yourself at the venue. My groomsman went and got additional flowers to cover it back up with the little time we had on our wedding day. Upon slicing the cake its 80-85% cream and no fruit filling, please look at pictures of two slices my wife and I got. We ordered a fresh fruit cake. Do you see any fresh fruit? We went back to talk to the manager and long story short they said the cake looks fine with the filling being empty. I said, so I pay you money and you make whatever and i'm supposed to accept it like that with no filling? The manager said look at the price list, all the basic cakes are the same price so if you pick fresh fruit cake its going to not have any fruit inside because of the cost. That is very unprofessional, especially for a wedding cake, why not charge more and make it propper, we already spend $560 on it. Then the reply was "oh it will be too heavy if we add more fruit" then just kept feeding excuses why its right and thats how it is. When questioned about the cake aesthetics , they said the employee should have fixed it, but I asked why is it like that in the first place? Pretty much said. Sorry. Nothing we can do. This place has delicious and fresh baked goods. My favorites are their BBQ pork buns, coconut cream buns, pineapple buns, coconut buns, and egg tarts. There's never been a problem with their baked good- it's always good. However, the service is really disappointing. I approached the cashier and she was talking a lot, and happily, to a client in Cantonese (who I presume is either a regular or a friend). Then, as soon as I give her the baked goods I wanted to buy, her face completely changed. She became silent and annoyed. She quickly took my money, gave me the change without saying a thing, and then went to talk to the other staffs. This really makes me not want to come back... but I do love their baked goods. This is my favorite bakery for Chinese pastries and buns. The coconut and BBQ pork buns are so soft and grabbable (I like grabbing buns!). And the coconut buns aren't too sweet. There is a lot of traffic here so you can be sure your buns will be fresh. Their egg tarts are delicious too when they're fresh. My other favorite thing here recently are their fruit tarts. I went there few days ago for the first time. One of my friends told me how this bakery carries chestnut cake and I was craving it so I went. I purchased 3 different types of buns(chestnut, red beans and pineapple), a slice of chestnut cake and a slice of tiramisu. Qualities of buns are like what many other Chinese bakeries carries, but they were all tasty. Quality of cakes were simply wonderful and I wanted more by the time I finished eating them. This is the place to buy your Chinese buns when you are done shopping at TnT. The buns here are fresh and cheap. You basically grab a tray and a tong and go medieval on their a$$. Buy at least six items and pay no HST. Most of the buns are smaller in size then the ones from New Town Bakery or Chinatown. But on the good side, you get to try more buns. They are constantly baking throughout the day, so it's easy to get a fresh batch. Although, I find their pork and curry buns to lack flavour as compare to New Town Bakery. Their buns are a little inferior in quality as compare to St Germains on the other side of Metrotown. If you need to buy a birthday cake, I would get it from St Germain. This is my favorite Chinese bakery in the Vancouver area. I love the chicken pies and chicken rolls. The egg white tarts are pretty good as well. My favorite thing to get here, though, would be the coconut buns, which come in a pack of three (not too big). It is always surprising when I give the cashier my items (mostly self-service: pick up a tray and some tongs and get what you like) and the total always seems to be around $10. I've never been so appalled from how terrible a business could conduct themselves. The lack of compassion, or effort in trying to help resolve a problem shown by employees of this establishment is ridiculous. I ordered an eggless fruitcake, followed the company's protocol, called in and ordered it two days in advanced. I made sure it was eggless and emphasized it. The day I went to go pick up the cake I asked the employee if the cake was eggless in which he responded yes. I then asked again to confirm due to an egg allergy. Only after indicating that there is an egg allergy, he then tells me that he was unsure if the cake is eggless and that there was no evident request for the cake to be eggless. If I had not double checked with him and assumed the cake was eggless, this would have lead to a terrible outcome. I understand mistakes can be made but the employee, Wallace, did not acknowledge the severe consequences of this mistake when he failed to apologize. Instead, he tried to push the blame aside, claiming that he trusted whoever took my order and implying that I may have been the one who failed to notify the employee that I needed this cake to be eggless. I have ordered numerous cakes from this bakery before and I always make sure to emphasize that I need the cake to be eggless. He then told me I could pick up a significantly smaller, but eggless cake across town at one of their other bakeries. This does not work for me because it would have been too small. At this point, he told me that there was nothing else he could do for me. I understand that there is nothing that can be done if they do not have an eggless cake made and ready, however, the manner that Wallace used in dealing with this situation was completely unprofessional and unsympathetic. He did not take any responsibility or accountability for the fact that I would have left with a cake that was not eggless under his advice had I not double checked with him. This experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. Best Chinese bakery chain ever. Everything is fresh, as there are always people running back and forth to place new trays filled with fresh buns on the displays. Prices have stayed the same for a long time, ranging from $1-$1.75 for each bun. You get to pick and choose the buns you want! I like Maxim's bakery in general and will continue to be their client for sure. My only complaint and recommendation for others is not to purchase the Maxim's gift certificates unless you get a special deal and not dollar per dollar. For our wedding we spent a lot of dollars to provide $10 Maxim's bakery gift cards from this Metrotown location for some of our many guests. We were told it was the same as cash at Maxim's bakery which makes sense just like any other gift card and as usual there was no special deal, it was straight cash dollar per gift card dollar. After our wedding what we and some of our guests discovered when trying to use the gift cards was they only allow them to be used on small items so if you're buying a large cake and want to pay for part of it with gift cards they won't let you. I assumed they were joking as that's obviously illegal as that would be the same as future shop claiming you can only use their gift cards on small items like USB flash drives and not their computers which wouldn't make any sense. When I told them that they said they wrote this (in Chinese) on the gift cards. I again assumed they were joking as you can arbitrary write anything on the gift cards but that doesn't change the fact it's illegal as people pay for them and should be valid for anything in the store. You can arbitrary write any rule on a gift card but it can't be against the consumer protection act. They even said well you didn't ask when you bought them. When I asked them how I'd even know to ask that because it's obviously assumed gift cards from a store can be used on any item from that store they just said it's on the gift card again which means nothing. For sure I will file a complaint with the Consumer Protection BC Group and Canadian Competition Bureau and let the Government deal with this. Anyways other than the gift cards they're gold and would recommend them. read more
