Good efficient service at this location and the biggest con of buying the lobster roll here would be there's no space for dining in. The options are limited to trekking to the food court upstairs in Richmond Centre, walking to your parked car and eat or heading home quickly in order to enjoy their lobster roll warm. I would recommend enjoying the lobster roll warm as it's more yummy and it's refreshing to add some lemon juice to the warm lobster roll. Ambiance at this location is typical of the Chinese bakeries in town. Grab a tray for convenience if you are buying more than 5 items and be patient if there's a line up. There isn't a specific pastry item or baked item that I usually buy from St Germaine besides the lobster roll because the overall taste of their buns are on the sweeter side and I mostly buy savory flavored buns or items like the sesame pastry. Their mango cakes seem to get a lot of compliments and the pineapple buns are quite popular. St Germaine is good at making Cantonese pastries with different variations. We bought slices of the Black Forest cake, the Signature Cheesecake, Chestnut cake, and Chocolate cake. They were all smaller than a few years ago and they looked less appealing (no decorations and less substance) while the prices had increased. The design of the cake boxes had changed as well (now they did not look pretty; they looked plain). It was disappointing. They changed the staff from young ladies to older women who looked sad and uninviting. Also, they had renovated the store (the interior design) to make it hard to browse the buns and the individual pastries/cakes on the shelves. They used to be a pure bakery but now they also served drinks and hot food. Do they need more business because they are not doing well? read more

Tried out a couple of their cakes for new years eve and after some disappointing buns a few weeks ago, we weren't expecting much but were pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed the cakes here! All of the sponges were light and fluffy while none of the cakes tasted too sweet either. We tried out the black forest (family favourite) and chocolate which was quite dense and dark as well as the white chocolate strawberry which was my brother's favourite. My top choice was their chestnut cake which had a nice thick layer of chestnut paste and not too much whipping cream (my preference). Their pistachio cherry cheesecake had a nice cheesecake layer but I found the pistachio mousse a little bit artificial. Finally, the fresh fruit cake is a classic. It was one of those - one off days that I felt like having a cake. I knew my dad really liked chestnut cake and so I decided to come to Saint Germain to pick up one of those Asian Chestnut cakes for him. One thing good about Saint Germain's cake is that they are very generous on the fillings. Yes I have went to their competitors (Boss, Maxim and etc) and have bought the similar cake and there were hardly any chestnuts inside. Also their cakes are freshly made daily. You can't go wrong getting a cake from them. Prices are definitely cheaper than Anna's. Disappointed, ordered the passion fruit mango cake for my son and normally it's topped with mango chunks on top of the cake but as of recently they have been topping the cake with chunks of oranges which does not go with the flavour profile of the cake. I guess they are trying to cheap out on ingredients and use oranges instead of mangos. We won't be ordering from here anymore. The cake tasted fine after we removed all the orange chunks from the top of the cake. Disappointed as we have been ordering cakes from here for years but we will try one of the other bakeries. St. Germaine should not have a picture of a mango cake topped with mangos if they are planning to use only oranges or at least let the customer know to see if they still want this mango cake that has no mango chunks on top anymore. read more

My mom unfortunately hasn't been able to quarantine yet due to her work being deemed essential, so on her way home she was picking up a few necessities from Aberdeen Mall and was enticed by the fresh smelling baked goods from Saint Germain. Knowing how much I love these pastries, she bought a few for me. Bless her heart. I know they specialize in cakes and sweet pastries, but like I mentioned, I've only tried their savoury baked goods. My favourites are the chicken filled sweet bun and chicken buttered roll. The sweet bun has a generous amount of filling and the buttered roll has the perfect flaky texture. I know they have plenty of other locations, but during this time their Aberdeen location is the only one still open. They are currently also offering delivery via Uber Eats. I had been craving egg tarts and only wanted one but they were 20% off and it was already too late when I went to cash out (to change my mind). Chinese bakeries are all over Vancouver / Richmond, but few offer the kind of variety that Saint Germain happens to showcase. In addition to the traditional Chinese baked goods, there is a robust selection of western style treats, much more than the average Chinese bakery. Most of it is offered at a reasonable price and everything I've had so far has been surprisingly fresh and delectable. It isn't a fancy spot, this Saint Germain is just a small storefront located inside Aberdeen. The counter is spacious and the goods on display look beautiful. Customer service is pretty good and the selection is surprisingly decent for a mall location. The crowds can get pretty hefty on the weekends, but the staff has done well to keep the line going, making the wait (if any) bearable every time. In terms of Chinese goods, there is a lot to appreciate. Their custard cream buns are wonderful when fresh out of the oven, the bread is soft and even, and the custard is sweet with just a little bit of tart. Large egg tarts for 99 cents? Consider me sold. The egg custard is sweet and smooth, with the edges just flakey enough for a lovely bite. Not feeling the buns / pastries? Shoot for sack of their $3.99 almond cookies. The packaging is perfect for gift giving and the cookies themselves are best enjoyed with a nice spot of tea. Then there are the additional western items I don't see too often that have impressed me so, such as the vanilla bean creme brulee ($4), lemon berry tower ($4), almond coffee torte ($4), or a killer tiramisu ($3). The orange chocolate pyramid ($4) is as gorgeous as it tastes, with a smooth layer of chocolate and the citrusy burst after taste of the orange. Another pretty treat is the apple caramel dome, which just looks like a $4 edible pair of boobs. Worse atrocities have been committed, I'll let this one slide. In the end, I like everything Saint Germain has to offer. in order to enjoy a quality dessert / treat, it has to look the part too. Saint Germain sells lots of Asian breads and it is located in the mall. Super convenient! I tried the taro bread and the BBQ pork bun. Taro bread: 5/5 - The bread was soft and fluffy, while the taro tasted like real taro. You could see the fibers and feel the mostly smooth but slightly grainy taro when you bite into the bun. My experience has however not quite met my expectations. I tried the mango mousse cake, strawberry mousse cake, and passionfruit cheesecake. The mousse cakes are pretty delicious but the mousse:cake ratio was too high in my opinion. They were also very small for their price (4-5$). The passionfruit cheesecake was good on the first bite, but got really too heavy halfway through. And I was sharing with a friend. The passionfruit taste was also pretty faint. I used to like this bakery, but I really feel they're going downhill in recent years ever since they've started expanding the franchise. I recently had one of their mango passion fruit mousse cake for an occasion, and it was very different than the one I had tasted several years back. The strawberries were frozen to boot. They've changed the recipe and the sugar content is a lot higher than before... on a previous visit I've also tried a piece of the new rose cake, and again, way too sweet. Cakes aside, their egg tarts are still good, but that's about the only thing that keeps me going to Saint Germain now. Better options can be found elsewhere for cakes. Most items are around $1 each. I love their pineapple buns - great texture, moist with a great topping! The sponge cake here is quite dense and buttery - I liked it but it tasted a little different than the other sponge cakes I've had. The egg tarts are delicious when they are fresh, unfortunately they didn't taste that great a day after a flight home to Winnipeg. :-( I like the specials like 6 small pineapple buns for $2.80. They open at 10 am but many of the items don't roll out until a bit past 11 am. We were shopping inside the mall and decided to pick up some bread when I got caught up with the beautiful display of mouth watering cakes and other treats! I bought some macarons, mango and strawberry mousse cake. They were about to close so there was a line up because of the 20% discount. The staff seemed unhappy and pissed so service was kinda bad. As we walk back to the parking, I started eating the macarons and had a big frown. The lemon was just ok but the hazelnut and chocolate flavour didn't taste good at all. And just because I have tried most of the authentic french macarons downtown and in other countries that I was truly disappointed! What a great bakery inside a shopping mall! Don't be confused with the other Saint Germain you may encounter, whether in US or Asia, since the name is quite popular and many bakeries use it. Came by on a Sunday afternoon to find this place packed with Chinese people buying bread and buns. I ended up trying the pineapple bun and the evaporated milk bun. The evaporated milk is not overly sweet so that was a plus. Both were very good and as far as buns go, probably one of the better ones I've had. It was soft and it just tasted... fresh. The bread texture reminds me of bread from Japanese bakeries but the buns and the filling are definitely more towards HK-style. Probably would've been amazing if it was still warm. Anyway, I stayed in line for 20 minutes and got 2 little pack of Japanese Cheese Cake and 2 of the Apple Tarts. The Japanese Cheese Cake is moist, light, fluffy and full of cream cheese flavour.
