I ordered the food off of UberEats and I am for sure to say that I won't order from here again. The food was very sweet. It was as if they added extra sugar to everything. The Alaska roll had too much sweet unagi sauce and the bc roll strangely had miso sauce on it. The croquette had a very strong sweet flavour to it. The sad part was that it did not have that nice crunchy outside. The worse roll was the crunchy roll. It is basically a fried California roll with sweet unagi sauce on it. Decent but snack sized sushi place at Lougheed and Bainbridge. Parking is available in the strip mall lot. The place appears to be run by Koreans. The sushi is therefore Korean style, much like Sushi Garden. Staff were friendly. No complaints. The sushi is definitely a bit on the smaller side. Even the Alaska roll was bite sized. I've heard good things about this sushi place so I came in with a friend. Japanese restaurants tend to have excellence in customer service and good at maintaining the cleanliness of their venue. This restaurant is really good at that. The washrooms are also pretty clean. Their rolls are average and not memorable. I think that they had new sushi chefs and they were being trained at the time of my visit. I'll give it a try again next time. read more

Located in a small strip mall on Bainbridge and Lougheed, its a small family run sushi joint. We came around 9pm on a Monday night and the place was pretty empty. The prices are fair for the portions of food, and there's a good selection on the menu. The sushi was pretty standard - size and quality of most other sushi joints. Their katsu don (rice bowls) are massive! We were all pretty stunned by the generous portions for the price, and the taste was not bad. Their salmon sashimi looked super appetizing and was a large generous slices, and tasted pretty decent. They also had spicy chicken karaage on special, so we got a couple orders of that and it was surprisingly spicy! It has more of a Korean fermented bean paste spicy flavour to it, but was fried well. The most disappointing things were the price of Sapporo was $10, and the chicken yakiudon... It was a sizeable portion, but was super greasy, had no wok flavour and had this sour tangy flavour which was unusual. Overall an okay place for the price point, but somewhere I would just order takeout sushi. read more

It's been a while since I last visited and it's probably gonna be a while till I return. I used to love this place but it really seems like they're not able to handle large lunch rushes as orders end up getting lost. I called in a takeout order, arrived 30 mins later (quoted 20 mins for takeout), paid, and still ended up waiting 15mins in their store. So 45 mins after I ordered, the waitress apologized for missing my order and then had the chefs make it right away. Wish the waitress had checked with the chefs to the whereabouts of my order when I arrived to pay, maybe I wouldn't have had to wait this long. I love Gaya sushi. It's like a more quality controlled Sushi Town. Prices are a bit higher than Sushi Town an Sushi Garden, but they make up for it in their quality. I like to order the combos since deciding a la carte proves to be difficult since they have an extensive menu. Spicy combo is delicious, and definitely my favorite. My usual go-to sushi place in burnaby is Sushi Town on hastings but this place is like 5 mins from my house so I come here for take out. Last time I ordered the Alaska roll and the red dragon roll. The quality of the sushi here is really good and it is pretty cheap. The pricing is not the cheapest in Vancouver but the quality is worth it. The two rolls cost about $9 and it was more than enough for one meal. Kind of a random location in a little plaza but the decor is nice and new and the service is good. I love sushi and seeing a place in Burnaby that has sushi similar in style to Sushi Garden but supposedly better, I had to come try it. It is really in the middle of nowhere but the special rolls and low prices is what makes this a food destination worth finding. I came with my mom and surprisingly, we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. After looking through the menu, we ordered the chicken kaarage first. It was a large portion with huge pieces of breaded and deep fried chicken breast. Unfortunately, the chicken was quite dry and not very tasty, but I enjoyed it since I love chicken breast and it wasn't very oily. Although, if you are a chicken kaarage lover, i have a feeling you might be disappointed. Also, we got both an alaska roll and firecracker roll. The alaska was quite standard with avocados in the middle and a salad dressing on top without too much rice surrounding the filling. The firecracker roll is what made me really like this place. My favourite things (scallop, spicy tuna and smoked salmon) all in one roll for only about $5!! I really enjoyed this roll and the combination with the classic spicy korean flavors. Finally, we got a hamachi carpaccio which was alright in taste but a very large portion and generally good quality fish. Was my go-to sushi place for several years, but after consistently getting worse over the last year, will not be returning. They can't seem to figure out their rice. Often it's hard in the middle, the rest of the time is so overcooked that the rolls just have a mushy paste of crushed rice wrapped around them. Was desperate for some food in the neighborhood tonight so stopped in at 9:30, server came to us after a couple of minutes pointing to her watch that read 9:34 telling us they were closed. Despite their hours being listed as until 10, and their open sign blinking away. Another table was sitting without their food, having obviously just arrived. I will say that this establishments advantages are that it's open really late, and its sushi rolls are okay (avg prices and they don't taste bad... especially common rolls like California). However, I think there are better options to choose from. Whenever I've ordered sushi, when I get my meal, the ginger is dry and tastes like its been out for a long time. While in general I have no complaints about the sushi, I ordered the Chicken Karage and it was quite underwhelming. A day later and I still cant get the smell out of my head (not in a good way). This experience definitely motivated me to write a review. My suggestion is use as a last resort if its super late and you live in Burnaby (nice for low delivery fee). Gaya sushi is a bit more expensive than sushi town but the quality is outstanding. I ordered quite a few rolls and nigiri tonight. The Toro Nigiri was super delicious. The size of the sushi roll is smaller than the one in sushi garden/town but the taste and quality are better. I went here today with my parents for the first time. I've heard and read good things about this place, so instead of going to Sushi Garden, I decided to 'drag' them here. We ordered 3pc of fresh oyster, prawn mayo, seafood salad, salmon and tuna nigiri sushi, sashimi, assorted tempura, negitoro, firecracker roll, bainbridge roll, and 3 bottles of beer (asahi black). Wow, I liked everything that arrived at the table except the seafood salad, but only because I've never been a fan of it in the first place. The rolls were really yummy. I know people love the firecracker roll, but I think I liked bainbridge roll a lot more. Nigiri and sashimi pieces were fresh and delicious. Tempura were deep-fried quite well. I noticed they used a new batch of oil for deepfrying, so the tempura had that extra refined 'clean' taste :D yum! The staff were quite nice too! We got what we wanted without a long wait. This place is so close to my house so I figured why not. I'm writing this review because I've read reviews that's on two end of the spectrum. So food is below average. I'll compare this with other Korean owned sushi joint. If I rate sushi Giwa a 3/5, this place would be a 1.5-2/5. The rice is not sushi rice. Tuna, salmon, hamachi, is not very fishy but definitely not fresh nor tasty. I've sat here for an hour and my cup had been dry for 45 minutes. The two servers are just chatting there in Korean laughing about something most of the time. I don't usually write reviews but we're done with our food for 15 minutes now and they didn't even walk over to check. There are a total of two tables eating. Anyway, even though I live 5 minutes away, I probably won't come back. Edit: funny side note as the server just scoffed and rolled his eyes when I asked him to pack my food a second time. I really wanted to try this place, something different from the usual Sushi California, and it was so close to home! Plus they had some interesting rolls on the menu. We ordered the bainbridge roll, firecracker roll, chicken karage, sushi pizza, and ebi mayo. For those who don't know, "sushi pizza" ($8) is essentially a flat round of deep fried rice, layered with all the "house" items: crab meat, avocado, and a few slices of tuna and salmon sashimi, cut into 6 pieces. It seems like they're not doing too well in the deep-fried department, because I wasn't a fan of any of our appetizers! The karage was pretty dry. Maybe if they were a bit thicker cut, they'd be a bit juicier? Def needs to be fried less! The coating/batter on the ebi mayo was really disappointing. I've had ebi mayo lots of times at other places, and this didn't compare at all. Sushi Pizza - a bit difficult to eat, I wasn't a fan of the deep fried rice. If anything, the house roll ($4-5) would have been a better option. My favorite roll was the firecracker: scallop roll topped with spicy tuna, seared with a blowtorch. The torched fish gave everything a different smokey flavor, I loved it! The service was disappointing for sure. It was a Tuesday night, and it did get busy at times. But when it was quiet, the waitress would be standing on the side watching the room, even though we've been waiting about 15 minutes and definitely ready to order. She was the only one on the floor, and I think there was another girl who was probably handling the cash and helping in the kitchen. We had a bit of attitude from her (apparently, we're supposed to know what a sushi pizza is), but when we tried to pay, the girl didn't say anything, just popped the card into the reader without confirming with us what we wanted to pay, and quickly went back to packing up boxes. Service was a bit abrupt and rude, leaving little to be desired. It seems they get a lot of take-out orders (I wonder why..) It was on that night of her dinner party (5 adults with 4 kids and a baby) that the manager? owner? came up to our table and asked if we could control our kids. (No, actually, but you can try.) A guy came over and tell us "outside food not allowed" and doesn't let my 2yr old eat her pizza!!!! We ordered more $40 food here, it doesn't mean we don't order here when my kids doesn't eat Japanese food!! What do they want me to do, leave kids outside or don't come in at all?
