Ordered the sushi platter A as I was in the area at a friends place and they were craving sushi. We called for dinner on a Sunday evening and was informed the wait would be 20 mins, which is a typical, if not quick for a platter pickup. Overall the sushi was good! Each piece tasted fresh, and of typical of quality sushi in Vancouver/Burnaby. My favourite pieces include the chopped scallop and the salmon nigiri. Went back to try their pressed sushi - wasn't hungry and I only ordered salmon oshi and some nigiri sushi. I liked their Saba nigiri and Toro nigiri. Service was deserving of the 20% tips - servers were friendly and super attentive in filling up tea and checking on you. I visit this place for sushi and was pleasantly surprised by their nabeyaki udon too, where the udon was ok in broth (not salty) and great in udon texture. Nabeyaki udon came with 1 prawn tempura, 1 fried egg, 2 broccoli, more veggie bits and many chicken pieces. The fried egg seemed Chinese style but the udon noodles part tasted like udon from Japan. Ambiance is relaxing as it wasn't busy to dine in on weeknight. I like visiting this sushi place for its comfortable booth seating, consistency in freshness, good service when dining in, and the overall ambiance, diversity of menu items plus free parking. I have been to Sushi Yoi a few times now and it slowly grew on me. The menu with the 3 items for $15.95 (as usual, prices kept going up) reminded me of the many sushi places in commercial drive. That was back in the days when you could choose 3 items for $10 or so. I typically ordered the bento and it was decent. On my last visit, I decided to get the nabeyaki udon and it was surprisingly good. The shrimp tempura was light and crispy. Lots of chicken pieces and spinach. The broth was tasty. A nice filling bowl of noodles hit the spot on a cold day. 4 stars for that. For the sushi stuff, it was more of 3 to 3.5 stars. Average to a bit higher than average, depending on what you ordered. Three out of the four of us didn't enjoy our lunch that cost $me 80.39 on Sat, May 27th. My mother requested lunch at this cute Japanese restaurant. Three hours of free parking is allowed in the Madison garage. Service-Okay Food-Could have been better Atmosphere-Quiet we were the only ones in the establishment until 30 mins later. My miso soup was weak in taste. My cooked/grilled salmon that arrived in my salmon sashimi bento box $18.45 was so compressed it had the texture of overcooked leftovers. The raw salmon was okay, not much flavor but the raw tuna was a tad slimy and was tasteless. The California roll was the only enjoyable part of my box. The beef in my husband's Oyako don bowl $14.45 was overcooked and did not taste or even look that desirable he stated. My daughter's tempura in the Bento box combo #1 $14.95 was "okay" but the beef over rice was just doused in a sauce that overpowered that entree and she couldn't enjoy the beef. The shrimp sunomono salad $5.75 was small in quantity and was swimming in the vinegar dressing. You had to scoop and save the noodles and cucumbers from drowning! Yikes! I left a good tip for the server who was trying to be efficient and it could have been an off day for the kitchen. More like 3.5 stars. This place is my togo place whenever I'm craving deep fried sushi. I visited here around 3 PM on weekdays to order togo. I was going to order the usual Osaka Roll, but opted for Deep Fried California Roll instead. I picked up my order after around 20 min ish, which is understandable due to how busy it is. Food is as expected, taste pretty good and crunchy enough. Kinda regretted that I picked Deep Fried California Roll, cause Osaka Roll is a better value and taste. Will come again for sure! read more

This restaurant gets a solid satisfactory rating - which you could really take or leave at this point. I know this joint gets frequented for nearby businesses for lunch. However, this wouldn't necessarily be my go to spot. The staff are nice which is always a plus in my books but I'll find a sushi quality to be a little different to my liking. Their agedashi tofu is one of my fav appy's and their dragon/caterpillar (I forgot lol) roll was good too. I find their sushi to be on the smaller size for the price so that's mostly the reasoning for my rating. Their sashimi is soso and quite small as well. I haven't had too many of their other bento/entree dishes so take my review with a grain of salt. I know there are definitely coworkers that enjoy this place - it just isn't a home run for me. read more

I ordered from Sushi Yoi on doordash twice and finally went in person the other day. It was great booth seating, we came in at around 5pm and it wasn't busy which was nice. It filled up around 6:15pm ish. We ordered the $15.95 Any 3 Items on a menu. The Mackerel Nigiri (the white nigiri) was obviously frozen and wasn't thawed out properly so that sucked. Other than that we ordered the B.C Blazer and Firecracker Roll and they were both great. The Salmon Oshi was great, usually it's overpriced but it was decently priced here. The staff were attentive, kinda awkward, but they were really nice and friendly. They constantly were checking if we wanted more water or tea. I would return again! read more

Had lunch here and ordered the choose 3 special. The waitresses came a total of 3 times rushing me to order. It was definitely not welcoming. From the menu, I chose the dynamite roll, tempura app, and masago sushi. A miso soup came with the combo. It was extremely salty and definitely need some kind of water to dilute the soup. We were already starting off on a bad note. Next, the tempura app came. It came with 2 shrimp, 2 yam, and 1 carrot tempera. The oil that fried the appetizer was distinctly old. It gave off that 2nd fried flavor. After that the sushi and roll came. The masago sushi was ok. Probably the best out of all the choices. Then the dynamite roll came with lettuce embedded inside of it. Please go somewhere else if you have the chance. I really didn't feel welcomed here and the food was mediocre at best. I ordered takeout from this japanese restaurant because it was close to my workplace. When I first entered the restaurant, the lighting was a bit dark inside. Not sure if the windows were tinted. The servers and a chef that I saw were Chinese. One of the servers gave me a takeout menu. The menu had 8 pages. There are so many items on the menu that it took me sometime to read through it. The menu has too many items that I lost my patience to read. Also, there were not too many photos on the menu, so I just ordered what I wanted. I ordered a Katsu don, dynamite roll, beef yakiudon, ikura nigiri sushi and chicken karaage. The quality of all these dishes here was only okay. The ikura nigiri and dynamite roll were better among these 5 dishes. The Katsu don looked delicious, but when I had a bite, the flavour was quite bland. I had really good Katsu don somewhere else. This one couldn't compare with it. The beef yakiudon was okay. They could have used better udon. I loved chicken karaage the most as it was the best dish among 5 of them. It was very crispy outside and soft and juicy inside. The pricing was reasonable. Would I recommend this Japanese restaurant to others? If your standard is not high and if you only care about filling the stomach, sure you can come to this restaurant. However, if you are looking for something high quality, I would say you better look for another sushi restaurant. read more

Working my way through the sushi restaurants in the Brentwood area, Sushi Yoi is a decent fusion style sushi place. The restaurant itself is large and spacious, and the staff are friendly. Take out and delivery are available as well. Their sashimi is decent, but a bit thinner slices compared to Sushi Garden. However their nigiri, specialty and maki rolls are much better than Sushi Garden and Joy Sushi. One of my favourite rolls is the BC roll which is grilled salmon skin. However most places offer it with salmon meat, or barely any salmon skin and stuff it full of California roll filling which is super disappointing, but here it's packed full of crispy salmon skin. Best place I've tried so far to get BC rolls. The dynamite roll is also one of my go tos and nowadays most places offer it with two prawn tempuras, but they only do it with one here - just an FYI cause it's still tasty. The Aburi is around $10 which is on the less expensive size, however it comes with a larger of rice and the presentation and quality is not as good as Green Leaf, and Miku still does it best. Overall a solid place for sushi, and will probably be my new go to. read more

Service was okay as we just ordered take out, we got chicken teriyaki and a mango dragon roll, the chicken in the teriyaki looked inedible and didn't taste any better, the veggies were almost in a soup of water not even sauce as I got it in the side, the mango dragon roll was also not good, the yams inside were absolutely disgusting and the avocado was completely brown. I was here on Feb 2nd and the experience was different than the first time. I had Chicken Sashimi Bento ($12.55, it wasn't really Chicken Sashimi, but it comes with Chicken Teriyaki) it tasted alright. I found the Chicken Teriyaki to be a bit dry and the rolls were breaking apart so easily. I guess the Sushi was made in rush to be so fragile like that? My and my brother both got the Yoi Combo (pick 3 items + miso soup) for $12.95. We both got the chopped scallop sushi, BC roll, and spicy salmon roll. As someone who usually only eats all-you-can-eat or ayce sushi, this tasted great. The chopped scallop pieces was surprisingly large, and the BC roll's salmon skin didn't have any sort or burnt taste, it was deep fried nicely. The Spicy salmon roll was what you would expect but still very tasty. The miso soup was also very tasty, not too salty or too bland. Came by on a Wednesday for lunch with a Groupon in a group of four. We made reservations but they failed to reserve a table for us...not a great start. After a short wait, they cleared a table and we were seated. The room is pretty tight and not a lot of space between tables. The Groupon was for a dinner for four and it was a great value which included: edamame, tuna and salmon sashimi, tempura (prawn and veg), miso soup, spring rolls, chicken or beef teriyaki rice bowls, a California crunch role and a spicy tuna roll. That is a lot of food. We all enjoyed the teriyaki bowls and unfortunately that was really the only part of the meal that stood out. The rest of the food was okay but nothing special. The staff were pleasant and fairly attentive. I would recommend Sushi Yoi if you are looking for good sushi value for the price but we have no plans to return. Best sushi in the area. I chose Sushi Yoi over Sushi Garden for their service, parking and menu options. Sushi Garden still has the bigger sashimi pieces if that's what you're going for though. I've tried a lot of items on Sushi Yoi's menu and while they're all pretty good, they need to work on their aburi. The bento boxes are the best bang for the buck. I always get the Osaka Bento, which comes with miso soup, 2 pieces of tuna sashimi, 2 pieces of salmon sashimi, seaweed salad, Alaska roll and a choice or either chicken terriaki on rice or beef terriaki on rice. Sushi Yoi is a busy little Japanese restaurant located on Rosser Street in Burnaby, right next to the large grove of Japanese cherry blossom trees (bet this place is a great place to have lunch during the spring). Having been on my list for quite some time, we finally dropped by for lunch in mid-November and started out with an order of Prawn Tempura ($8.95). Deep-fried to perfection, the prawns were coated in a light and crispy batter. The Chicken Teriyaki ($9.95) was prepared exactly how we like it - perched on a large bed of bean sprouts and served on a sizzling hot plate. I love when chicken teriyaki has a nice crispness to the skin. The Sockeye Salmon Oshi ($10.95) was seared which gave it a nice rich, oily, and buttery texture. I like that they don't use too much rice in their oshi sushi pieces but this also means they're a bit on the small side. Loved how the Sockeye Salmon Carpaccio ($12.95) was presented. Their sashimi pieces are pretty solid and this dish had a bit of a kick from the jalapeño slices but it was tempered with the mayo drizzle that they use. Last up on our first visit was the Gommae ($3.95) which is a simple appetizer of boiled spinach with sesame dressing. I think they might have overdone it a bit with the dressing though. I found myself in the area about a month later and dropped by for lunch again. It was pretty hopping here and it seems like they do a lot of takeout orders as I could see a number of delivery drivers coming by to pick up their orders. Remembering how good their oshi sushi was, I ordered the Unagi Oshi ($9.95). As previously mentioned, their oshi sushi tends to be on the small side but I do like that they don't use too much rice. This dish was nice and creamy with just a hint of spiciness. I also decided to order their BBQ Salmon Kama ($4.95) which is the neck or collar area of the fish. While there's a bit of work involved with all of the bones, the meat here tends to have a lot of buttery oiliness (which I enjoy). For the price, these were really large pieces. read more

Got takeout from here today and everything came packed nicely. Ordered the takoyaki, alaska roll and california roll and everything tasted delicious and the salmon in the alaska roll tasted so fresh. The rolls had the perfect amount of rice and tasted nice and the takoyaki were crispy and hot and had a generous amount of sauce and toppings. However we were seated outside on some small patio table with folding chairs in the sun. The service was fast. It was a double date night with my boyfriend, my girlfriend and her fiancée. My girlfriend picked Sushi Yoi because it was in-between where we are both located. We are both YELP'ers and love to pick places to eat based on the reviews we read and post:) When we got there they had a reserved table for us, service was great, always filling up our teas and what not. My boyfriend and I ordered the Awesome Roll, along with some other rolls and Sashimi it was all really good and fresh tasting. They had good buck of beer special which all enjoyed as well. Prices were decent, not overly priced. Good casual place to eat. They even had TVs there as well, which is nice to see - it creates more of a relaxing atmosphere, rather than just "eat and leave", like some places. I would definitely go back to Sushi Yoi, it's funny I use to work very close by BUT would always pick to eat Sushi Garden. I have no idea how you can botch miso soup but they have managed it. It was lightly flavoured water. It obviously must be a mix and someone put too much water in it. It was seriously clear like water. The salmon oshi sushi was pretty decent. Small but it's only $7.95 so that's fair. The beef sashimi is pretty decent too and the meat portion is rather small but again it's $7.95 so that fairs. It comes with so much radish and greens that you pretty much could call it a salad. I was there for about 40 min and the entire time there were take out bags on the table next to me. They had different bills attached to them so I know if was more than one persons order but it baffled me as to why they sat so long. If you have pick up orders I would ask for a phone call when ready or if they were delivery then I'm assuming you can expect your food cold. read more

When I finish working out, there a few places where I want to eat to recover my glycogen. This will be one of the places where I would be heading to in order to recover my energy. I have been trying to hunt for the perfect sushi joint for my needs and this is the place for what I am looking for. I ordered their All-Day Special which was 3 pieces of Nigiri Sushi of Tuna and Salmon with 3 pieces of avocado on brown rice sushi ($2 extra) It came with miso soup as part of their special. The miso soup was alright. Nothing fancy really. When it came down to the main course, the slices of fish were so big, I could have literally wrapped the rice around the sashimi it was that decent. Needless to say, the fresh was conventional fresh. The brown rice was chewy, firm and had some white sushi rice to balance the flavor to prevent it from being disgusting to eat. I can see this place being better for being as a take out place because it is tucked between so many apartments and townhouses. We decided to give this restaurant a try as we were nearby. We were seated right away and served hot tea. Right away, we noticed the variety of bento boxes and reasonable prices for the area. We also noticed how most customers at the other tables were also eating bento boxes. Hence, we ordered a couple bento boxes, a chopped scallop roll and a tamago nigiri. The miso soup arrived pipping hot. The teriyaki was made well. The tempura was crispy. However, the rolls were poorly made. Also, the dynamite roll had lettuce which was odd to us as it usually does not have lettuce. The California and chopped scallop rolls were also poorly made and fell apart when picked up by chopsticks. Our tea was never refilled despite our cups were empty. They were busy with take out orders. I think this restaurant does well because of the lack of competition in the area. Also, the prices were reasonable. Sushi Yoi is good. I would come here over sushi garden any time.. Walked in without any expectations but I was super impressed :) Everything is priced well and delicious. We had the awesome roll, the $8.95 special (which is fantastic), ebi sunomo, and cream corn croquettes (also fantastic). With two drinks and tip plus tax we paid a little less than $30.
