Food (5): Food was very good. I got the matsu which is 8 pieces of sushi that is chef's choice. The bonus is that they do prepare it in their own creative way. Not to say they would do something different every time, but it is more unique. For example, my toro (tuna belly) came with some caviar and some sort of radish on top which really gave a nice salty and sour taste to the already delicious toro. Some of the toppings on the other ones gave a nice savory moment the moment it comes into your mouth. Definitely worth getting. I learned later you can actually order the individual sushi as matsu style which I did. This is one of the best sushi restaurants I have came across in SGV. The chef's picked out very good with the fish. Ambiance (5): Very nice intimate atmosphere. A good place to take a date with. But aside from that, nice bamboos on top of the stone walls. Gives it that nice Japanese feel to it. The restaurant has more of a high end modern Japanese feel to it. The wood frame ceiling at the top was great. Service (4): I was at the bar so it was nice. I was able to quickly ask for more sushi and got it pretty quickly. They were quick and efficient at processing my check as well. Very nice people to interact with. Every restaurant has on off night every once in a while and tonight was that night for Sushi Roku. Everything went wrong from service to drinks to food and everything in between which was extremely inconsistent with our past experiences with this restaurant. At the end of the day the GM Brian came to the rescue and saved the day and made everything right. He took ownership of all the issues (primarily technical) and made up for the issues. I don't go to sushi place to eat California rolls or dragon rolls or something only Flyover states people call sushi. When it comes to sushi, authenticity trumps all other made up weird name rolls or ground up fish meal that they rolled into a rice clumps with bunch sweet sauce. You can get ground up old fish inside of a can of Fancy Feast. And I'm not a cat. We ordered deluxe sushi plate, sushi plate, edamame, cod, vegetable tempura and a couple of other stuff. Sushi rice was flavorful but man oh man, the fish were nothing special. Just Tuna, salmon yellow tail and some cooked stuff they rolled into a tight ball. The other IZAKAYA style entrees were good. Sushi was disappointing to say the least. Why this place is called "sushi" Roku is quite misleading. It should be called IZAKAYA Roku or Roku Japanese restaurant with barely adequate sushi. The place is clean and the ambience is good. Sake selection is ok but somewhat lacking anything very good and terrible value in terms of taste/price ratio. It's better to drink white wine here. The two main things that have to work, sushi and sake, were just meh to lower than average. For better sushi experience you should try Oji or Sushi Enya down the street. For upscale PF Chang style Japanese food for the novice eaters, this place is more than adequate. read more

The fish is fresh and melts like butter in your mouth. They also offer non fish dishes for someone in your party who doesn't eat fish and they also have a vegan roll, which makes them versatile. Outdoor seating is available which is nice because you're overlooking the square and depending on the night they may have a band playing live music. The night we went it was a little on the noisy side only because it was the same night as The Rolling Stones concert at the Rose Bowl so it was a little difficult having a conversation because it was so busy. There are many parking structures near by and they do offer validation for one of the lots. Would definitely come back to sit at the bar and go with the chefs selection. read more

Seriously the best fatty tuna sushi I have ever had, and the uni was fresh too! Very pricey but a nice splurge for Christmas Eve! When you come in you are treated kindly by the hostess and then by the sushi chefs as you are taken to your table. The inside is very nice too! My boyfriend had a hot green tea, which was generously refilled four times. We ordered a bunch of random sushi pieces, an unagi and avocado roll, the beef skewers and the pork belly rice. For a Thursday night after 8pm it was pretty quiet- for some reason they suggested we dine on the patio even though there was plenty of space inside. Maybe they were trying to make it look busier as people walked by but we were solo outside. I did end up using the bathroom and the restaurant is kinda cheesy- def looks like it was once cool but now it's dated. So how about the food huh? No one cares about the space, right! Ahahah! Ok you got it- pretty mediocre in my opinion. The appetizers are a hit or miss- for the price- they seemed all like a miss- most $14-$19 to me seems like the portions could have been a little bit bigger and better quality. My partner and I got the fried chicken- eh- it was ok but not worth the price for sure- and the string beans- fine- you can't screw those up I guess. The rolls were interesting but I found it hard to find some I liked because so many had shrimp or, jalapeño or some ingredient I didn't like. What we ended up with was good but we ended up ordering more because the smaller rolls were small and the appetizers had been weak. We ended up spending almost $100 for no reason. This is always a safe, good local spot for Pasadena locals. Amidst COVID, this is actually one of the first spots I felt safe eating at. This evening, we had to switch tables and they were immediate about cleaning the table we just sat at and even double checked the table to make sure it was truly clean (loved that!). I haven't been to Sushi Roku Pasadena in 10 years so it was a stroll down memory lane to come back and it was worth it! Better than I remembered. Our server, Alex, was all smiles and figured out we wanted something special and delicious off the menu so he asked us what kind of fish we liked and asked Manzo the skilled chef to create some dishes for us! The dishes presented were stunning and the flavor profiles were spot on and delightful! They started us with baby hamachi with ground yuzu in a yuzu infusion vinegarette and unique greens. Then we had scallops with black truffle and gold foil, red snapper in a black salt, crisp mirugai with caviar paper, Bonita and the last fish I forget but it was served with freshly shaved garlic bulb! We followed this with our favorite tried and true rib eye wrapped asparagus, yummy miso black cod, crunchy roasted cauliflower, beef skewers and a dessert of pound cake with berries and ice cream!
