Chicken Breast Plate x Salad x Miso Soup.

SanSai Japanese Grill is a casual counter-serve chain for health-minded Asian fare from sushi roll to salads to chicken breast. This location is at Lake ave in Pasadena. Its interior decor and atmosphere were modest and relaxing, respectively. Their menu items were vast. I ordered their Chicken Breast Plate x salad and soup. It has satisfying flavor and tender breast; I dig it. Service was fast. Prices were fair and competitive. Overall, I enjoyed their food and service. Perfect for a quick meal. I recommend you visit.

Stopped by while in Pasadena and it ended up being a solid, easy meal. Nothing fancy, just straightforward Japanese comfort food that does the job. Service was quick and the dining room was clean and relaxed. We ordered the shrimp & steak plate, yakisoba noodles with chicken, sushi special box, tiger roll, and shrimp & veggie tempura. The yakisoba with chicken was definitely my favorite -- good portion, well seasoned, and filling without being too heavy. The sushi was surprisingly solid for a casual spot, and the veggie skewers that came with the shrimp and steak plate stood out more than I expected. Portions were generous and prices felt fair for the area. There's also a small Japanese snack section inside, which is a nice bonus while you're waiting. Overall, a reliable place for a quick, satisfying lunch or low-key dinner if you're in Pasadena.

We've been dining at this SanSai for well over 10 years. We used to work in Pasadena, and it was one of our favorite places, but had not been here for at least a couple of years. Happy to report that the food is as good as we remembered it to be! My favorite is the salmon bowl---delicious grilled teriyaki salmon with steamed white rice. I always get the Sumi Salad, which is so flavorful and refreshing: Shredded green and purple cabbage, julienne carrots, green onions, roasted almonds and sesame seeds tossed with rice vinaigrette dressing and garnished with crunchy noodles. This was as good as ever. JJ;s absolute favorite is tempura, and he always gets the Tempura Plate. Tempura with steamed white rice. It comes with two side salads, Instead of the one salad, he gets the miso soup with the Sumi Salad. He said that the quality of the tempura plate was as good as he remembered it to be. Service is top notch---A plus! Several of the staff have been there for over 10 years, and they were happy to see us. Especially JJ, who always loves to engage with the staff. They are super friendly and service continues to be as great as ever---superb. The interior is spacious, bright and cheery, with plenty of seating. You order your food at the counter and pay. Then they call you when your order is ready---it seems like now they bring it to your table. Parking is plentiful---there is a huge parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. It was fun dining there again after such a long time, and seeing friendly and familiar faces. Such a nice experience! Highly recommended.

We needed a quick take out lunch for heading back to the hotel. So we stumbled here because of the large sign that said SanSai Japanese Grill while driving. Ordered: Spicy Tuna Roll Tiger Roll Steak Plate The food was not bad, just pretty average sushi. A typical mall japanese food, cheap and affordable.

Got salmon roll, salmon bowl and chicken bowl. both bowls came with small side salad. The sumi salad was pretty good. The salmon plate was decent and good sauce. The salmon roll was also good. Overall decent fast type Asian style food.

About $15 for this California Roll and Chicken Breast Combo Plate!

Not gonna lie, I'm a cheap date. Bring me here and I'll be one happy clam! I've been eating at various SanSai restaurants since I was a wee little schoolgirl. The quality has not changed and it's just as delicious as I remember! Their salads are my favorite part because they make me feel at least a little healthy while I scarf down rolls of sushi, terriyaki and rice Two plates which included 6 pieces of sushi, 2 salads, terriyaki chicken and rice only set me back about $30! That's a great deal if you ask me, and a much needed break from other unhealthy take out options.

for this being a fast food sushi restaurant i felt it was pretty good. prices are very reasonable for the quality of fish you get but if you're looking for high quality sushi then go somewhere else. this is perfect for a quick grab and go. the service was fast, workers were nice and overall it was pretty clean. would come back again!

Osawa is 100% worth the hype, and if you haven't heard of it, let me hype it up for you…read more The place is small so be prepared to wait if you're trying to go on a Thursday-Saturday, or show up when they open for lunch or dinner. Ambiance is super cute, love the little flags over the sushi/shabu bar and the art on the walls adds to the Japanese restaurant feel. The aroma when you walk in is mouthwatering (I was really hungry) but it doesn't smell fishy like some sushi places can. Staff is unbelievably great, super friendly and helpful if you have any questions about the menu or want recommendations. Don't be afraid to ask what the MP is on omakase, they totally work with what you're looking to spend or based on how many pieces of sushi you want to eat. Now for the real reason to visit Osawa: the food is absolutely amazing!!! Fresh, tasty, perfectly portioned. From the shishito peppers appetizer to the sushi, sashimi, hand rolls, and shabu; I cannot recommend this place enough! They have plenty of sake options to pair with your meal as well as beer or specialty cocktails if that's your preference. They offer to explain your order when it arrives which is great for those newer to sushi or just trying something different. Seriously, some of those fish practically melt in your mouth. I personally haven't ordered any rolls yet but they absolutely look delicious. If you're looking for a good sushi date spot, this. is. it. It's also good for a small group, maybe up to five or so before you feel cramped. Shabu is seated at the bar and their meats and veggie are delicious and fresh, enhanced by the tasty broth. It's even good on a summer day because they have solid air conditioning. Cannot say enough good things about Osawa. Go try it for yourself. :)

After more than a year away, I decided to give Osawa another try on May 8, 2026. Unfortunately, the experience confirmed why I had stopped coming. Around 9:02 p.m., my waiter came by to ask for last orders. I ordered chicken karaage. This is a simple dish that usually comes out in about 4 to 5 minutes. For whatever reason, the order did not arrive until around 9:26 p.m. -- almost 25 minutes later. It seemed obvious that the order had been forgotten. When the karaage finally arrived, it looked hastily sauced. Several parts of the chicken were unsauced, which is not how the dish was normally served in the past. Given the delay and the apparent mishandling, I did not touch the dish. A Japanese male manager wearing glasses then came over. He recognized me, and I explained that I had not been back for more than a year because of the food poisoning incident from fish in 2025. Instead of responding seriously, the manager smiled and giggled slightly, then launched into an irrelevant conversation about his connections in the Japanese food industry in Old Town Pasadena. When he asked why I had not touched the chicken, I explained the almost 30-minute delay and the problems with the dish. Rather than comping the item or offering a real apology, the manager asked whether I still wanted to eat it or would prefer to cancel it. He then ended the conversation by suggesting that I come in during weekday lunch for the $18 lunch specials. That response was bizarre and tone deaf. I did not return after a food poisoning incident to hear a sales pitch about lunch specials. I returned as a longtime customer giving Osawa another chance. Osawa's way of doing business has changed a lot. I've seen better customer service at Erewhon.

It was clear that the chef put a lot of thought into each bite. The ones that stood out the most to my group were the salmon sushi with toasted sesame (the nuttiness of the toasted sesame was incredible), unagi (the eel sauce was the best that I've ever had and I've been to Japan!), and the lobster hand roll. I will say that the restaurant has a dark/intimate ambiance since it's lit by the candles at your table. My table ordered 2 trust me's and 1 nozawa trust me. You're served with a plate of edamame and then each fish one by one. They wait for the entire table to finish eating the plate in front of you before going back to the kitchen to let them know when to prepare to following dish. The fish literally feels like it melts in your mouth. You get a chance to chew but then everything else melts in your mouth. The sushi rice they use is magnificent. When the sushi comes out, the rice is so warm and the fish on top is cold and it's honestly an amazing experience in your mouth.

My fiancee ordered the Bulgogi entree that comes with steamed rice & miso soup. They are not stingy with meat here and the meat quality is pretty good. 10/10 for him. My partner and I shared the rainbow roll, mango cha cha roll, lemon salmon roll, salmon bento box, and cheese bulgogi. I really enjoyed the creative specialty sushi rolls, with my favorite roll being the mango cha cha roll. It tasted savory from the crispy shrimp tempura, while the fresh mango on top added a nice, refreshing pop of sweetness. As for the lemon salmon roll, it tasted fresh and more citrus-forward. Surprisingly, the salmon bento box was very filling and balanced. This included 2 pieces of grilled teriyaki salmon, 4 pieces of California roll, mixed tempura, miso soup, and a small salad with dressing. For anyone who does not eat raw fish, this would be the perfect dish. For the cheese bulgogi, there was a sweet-savory soy garlic flavor. I liked that the meat was thinly sliced, which paired perfectly with the gooey melted cheese. However, it was a bit saltier than I'd like it to be. Some rice and miso soup was served alongside this to balance out the richness from the cheese. Service could have been better. It seems that the staff were not very attentive at times, even though the place was not busy. Nonetheless, all of the food was pretty good and there was a chill atmosphere. This is a solid sushi bar to visit for either lunch or dinner.

Supposedly there are Sushi Enya locations closer to where I reside on the west side, but I love Old Pas and the ambiance and quality of food here did not disappoint. The highlights of our meal were the Super Chirashi--which came with literally all of our favorite fish including a small spoonful of sweet uni and some extremely yummy tamago--the Cherry Blossom roll (a riceless Enya Special Roll, which means a dramatic presentation!) and the red snapper nigiri aka madai (served with yuzu paste and lemon juice). Although my husband felt that the amaebi was slightly slimy and wished that they served the hot sake in a way that kept the drink warm (you're probably wondering how I managed to survive his critical standards--you and me both!), everything else did not miss a beat. We noticed other customers were enjoying the omakase--the premium at the bar is $250 pp and the "lower" tier table omakase is $185 pp. everything looked delicious but I am also a control freak and enjoy being able to select what I want. With that perspective, the chirashi really was the way to go for me (and next time I'll just add on another order of uni!). In the end, Sushi Enya may not end up being our go-to omakase, if only because their other offerings are so good! Fresh fish, tasty sushi rice and tempura, and attentive and efficient waitstaff. 5/5 stars easy!
