This hidden upstairs restaurant is fun to walk too. You walk through other restaurants and shops to find all up stairs into a dark candle lit restaurant. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. We had dinner here as a family and I only got a few pics but it was delicious! We ordered the Gyoza, Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice, Crudo Tacos, Hamachi Crudo, Tuna Tartar and seared steak. They have these DIY hand-roll class (they do it every Thursday). It's fun and beginner-friendly..you learn the basics of sushi prep, make different hand rolls, and they also go over sushi types like nigiri vs. hand rolls plus a bit of the cultural background. $79 per person and it includes champagne, 5 hand rolls, and 3 appetizers. The perfect restaurant for a date night!! This was my second time at Kaviar. The atmosphere, service, and food were top tier quality. For the hot dishes, I highly recommend the uni pasta because the flavor was on a whole other level of amazing. It's one of their best sellers and I understand why. I also tried the hamachi kama and the portion was impressive. Although the flavor of the fish was bland on its own, the pickles, lemon, and provided soy sauce made for diverse flavors to savor the fish meat. The rolls were the stars. I tired a few, and my favorite was the toro (which had a subtle truffle flavor) and lemon (spicy and refreshingly sour). The amaebi goma roll was also delicious, and must be eaten on its own without soy sauce, otherwise the sweetness gets masked. The garlic albacore was good but a bit too similar to the lemon. Parking in this area of Pasadena often requires payment. I parked in a public garage for $10 for 2 hours. Overall, I had a fantastic meal here. I highly recommend folks to come visit. read more

We came for Valentines and it was a busy night. The food and drinks were taking too long. I believe we waited about 30 min for our drinks and an additional 20 min for food to arrive. I went to Kaviar for my birthday dinner on a Friday night and it was surprisingly empty. It might have been the fact that it was Black Friday and a holiday weekend, but I didn't mind it. Let me start my saying that it's a beautiful space. The ambiance is romantic and definitely a nice place for a celebration or a date. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by our host and also our server Narine, who was very friendly and attentive, and were immediately seated at our table. My boyfriend and I each got a cocktail. Mine was the Emerald city, and high came with a bit of a show. The server brought a rosemary and torched it to add smokiness to my glass, which was a bit over powering. The drink it self was sweet and delicious but wasn't a fan of the smoke flavor. My boyfriend ordered a shishito pepper drink which he enjoyed. Next, we ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice ($22) as a starter and 4 rolls. We ordered the spicy yellow tail, the amber jack and bluefin roll, Toro roll, and the waygu shishito roll. All priced between $29 and $40. Our favorites were the spicy yellow tail and the amberjack and bluefin roll. The toro tasted bland, and the waygu roll was nothing special for the price. They offered a $250 per couple menu and another option with select items from the menu posted online. I was hoping to try some of the other hot food items I had seen on the website. We really enjoyed the caviar service, the sashimi tasted fresh, and the A5 Wagyu melted in my mouth. It was my first time here, but the server didn't make any recommendations. I was on the search for somewhere fancy to take my niece for her graduation celebration. She would be happy spending quality time anywhere, but I wanted to make this celebration special. Kaviar exceeded my expectations and really provided that extra touch we want in a celebration. Highly recommended for a romantic date night and special ocassions. Kaviar is located in the Old Town Pasadena area. They have valet parking or would validate for the nearest parking structure right across the street from them (Raymond & Union). My niece and I were excited to go up the beautiful staircase, and took some pictures along the way to the entrance. There was a hostess at the door who welcomed us and took us to our seats. I had reservations from Yelp to ensure we wouldn't have to wait on a Friday evening. We were given their dinner menu, but I didn't see the tasting menu I saw online, so I inquired with Jess, our lovely waitress for the evening, and she said it's available upon request. Perfect! We did the Kaviar Chef's Tasting Menu ($130/person) with the Caviar Service Add-On ($60/25 grams) and 2 Lychee Mint Martini ($15/each). I liked the lychee martini and didn't taste too much mint, which is fine for me, but when something is in the name you'd expect to taste it more. Caviar Service - 25 grams of caviar topped with 24 karat gold fakes and served with blini, toast, a cream, butter, chives, and shallots. Solid presentation. This was my niece's first ull caviar service experience so I loved watching her arrange her little bites. As a base, I prefer the blinis overall but it was nice that they offered a blini and a toast so you can alternate between soft and crunchy textures. The tasting menu started coming out, so I did ask Jess to pause everything so we can take our time enjoying our caviar service. Truffle Edamame Yuzu Shishito - A very huge portion that we didn't even finish by the end of the meal. I liked the glaze on the edamame. The shishitos were too on the soggy side for my liking. Yellowtail Ceviche - This was more like a carpaccio than a ceviche. Nevertheless the yellowtail was nice and fresh. A great light bite to start. Truffle Toro - Toro topped with caviar, truffle oil an 24k gold. Super soft and buttery in texture. Melts in your mouth and soooooo flavorful. Maguro Crispy Rice - There was a strategic piece of radish separating the crispy rice and the spicy tuna and avocado aioli to keep it from getting soggy. It was a nice crispy bite. Wagyu Taco - This wonton shell taco has skirt steak wagyu, chili manzano and an avocado puree. I liked the wonton shell but I wasn't too impressed by the wagyu, sadly it was a bit dry. The avocado puree was also overpowering its' flavors. Signature Roll - We each picked a signature roll and decided to pick items with different proteins for a better variety. We decided on the Toro and the Spicy Yellowtail Escolar. The toro signature roll has avocado, cucumber, truffles, salt crystal, lemon and chives. It was my favorite between the two. The spicy yellowtail escolar signature roll has seaweed salad, cucumber, serrano, rayu, eel sauce, goma dressing, and inferno sauce. It definitely had a kick. The thing I didn't like was how the roll was soggy from the beginning. Looking back at the ingredients now, that's a lot of wet ingredients to throw into a roll, no wonder why it was soggy. Quick recommendation to the restaurant. I would move the rolls after the Miso Glazed Black Cod and Wagyu Skirt Steak cause they are really filling. I actually asked Jess to send out the next item or I'll be too full if I tried to finish the rolls. Miso Glazed Black Cod - Loved the super sweet flavor of the miso glaze. The black cod was so soft and tender. I hate to pull it off the sizzling plate they serve it on to stop it from continuing the cook. Wagyu Skirt Steak - Served on the same platter as the miso glazed black cod. I also pulled these off the platter to stop the cooking. Staff also brought a torch if we wanted to sear the meat. We liked it as it was. I thought this was okay for a piece of wagyu, not the most tender cut but still tasty. Dessert - A mini brownie and golf ball size scoop of ice cream comes with the tasting menu. This brownie has nuts, so beware if you have food allergies. I didn't particularly love it but it was nice. Complimentary Celebration Dessert - Jess asked my niece to pick from 3 desserts: a cheesecake, a brownie, and a hana cake. My niece decided on the hana cake since Jess mentioned it was light and airy. To our surprise this glorious dessert comes out with this epic sparkler. My niece felt really special and we got a good amount of photos and videos in to celebrate. Great service by Jess the entire time. She was so sweet and helpful, and she was an essential part of making our celebration so special. Also shout out to Henry who was part of the team that cleared the items we were done with. Old fashion was great! They nailed the flavors and it was smooth. The smoked feature added an extra touch. Parking: plenty of paid parking nearby, but no designated spot for the restaurant. Ambiance: dark inside almost like a bar but looks really modern and hipster Service: The waiters were attentive, but for some reason, it seemed like our rolls were forgotten. We waited almost 1 hour after ordering our food to get the last remaining rolls. This was disappointing. Food: What stood out was the Uni pasta, NY waygu, and the coconut mango roll. These were all delicious and worth it in the end. Somehow the cream cheese and mango worked on the roll! They also charge a service charge too. Let's be honest, this is basically theater with chopsticks. From the first dish to the last, this omakase experience was a curated rollercoaster of texture and flavors. Had a small hiccup where we ordered non-alcoholic drinks but ended getting drinks with alcohol in it. Rich and silky like it had been designed to ruin all appetizers in the future. The lineup that followed: Bluefin Tuna, Red Snapper, Aji, King Salmon, Halibut, Yoto, and Black Salmon. This was a nonstop parade. Each piece arrived dressed subtly, just enough to accent the fish without stealing the spotlight. Unfortunately, the bonito fell very flat. Did not think it deserved to be part of the team. The toro hand roll pulled me right back in though, wrapping up the savory portion of the meal. The finale salvaged the last few bites.
