I've heard of Sushi Roku and how people fell in love with Sushi their first time coming here I dunno about that. We were in Old Pas and were hungry to dine somewhere. Old Pas has a lot of places where you can dine at but not all are good. case in point. I guess I have been to many sushi places and after eating here I just feel it wasn't all that. Some dish were good but in general hmmm it was a disappointment. I was looking for fresh sushi and the night we went my experience wasn't all that. I came up on this restaurant by chance and glad that I did. Didn't have to wait for a table, even though we didn't have reservations (just lucky). From the start, service was great. Everyone was very extremely attentive. The food and drinks were great. I highly recommend this place, except for their lamb shops. It was too gamy for me. read more

I have to say that I was unimpressed with the food. For the price, I should trek it over to Japantown and eat at Hide. While the food was good, it should blow me away for what I paid and honestly nothing did. My husband liked their spicy miso soup but everything else was just meh. We ordered the yellowtail sushi which was fresh and I liked the seared albacore sashimi, but the rolls were really lacking, especially the sauce on the lobster roll. Bland. The server was just so-so. Being gluten intolerant, the benefit to eating here is they have a gluten free menu, however I got the feeling the waitress felt like she was being inconvenienced and would rather pay attention to those spending exorbitant amounts of money. Also, as I know the is a chain, I think that was part of it that blew it for me. The menu seemed limited to me in terms of traditional sushi items and caters more to the touristy Caucasian crowd that eats fried rice and California rolls. I plan to go to Japantown next time or maybe Sugarfish or Kazu Nori downtown. read more

I just love the ambience and food at this restaurant. Located right across the iPic theater and in the middle of a romantic quaint square in old town Pasadena, this restaurant offers a fantastic mood, particularly for dinner. The vibe is a very cool and trendy one, particularly for the seats around the front of the restaurant, and feels more like a modern lounge/bar than a restaurant. If you go inside, the restaurant offers a more traditional, but still modern/western feel, with your standard sushi bar and tables. If you're in the mood for something cool and chill around old town Pasadena, I would highly recommend this restaurant. The food is great also! Their rolls are delicious. Definitely try their baked crab handrail and the Gensai, which are truly amazing. Portions are small though, so be sure to order a lot! Another favorite of mine was the Uni Udon, Japanese style sea urchin pasta. This is definitely a fusion type of Japanese restaurant, so the food consists of a lot of interesting mix between traditional Japanese food with a modern touch. Highly recommended! Honestly the drinks were my favorite. Way overpriced sushi/main menu items, as they are like every other sushi restaurant's same menu, so not sure the reason for the uptick. The interior is nice so maybe paying for the decor? Not really worth the prices unless you get the rolls. The friend chicken was spot on. The part that bothered me was $11 glass of wine from New Zealand that the bottle costs $9 retail. I know that because that's my cheap house wine. Come on! As someone who eats sushi about twice a week I had high hopes for this place but honestly the sushi there was kinda meh. I think people come mostly for the ambiance but overall the food was kinda so-so. I would recommend maybe coming for a drink and an appetizer to chit chat with friends. We ordered the deluxe sushi plate, filet mignon, and crab fried rice. The the sushi was overpriced and quality was so so. Again, paying for the ambiance. The filet mignon was actually really good but not good enough to make me come back again. The waitress recommended the crab friend rice but we regretted ordering it. The staff other than our waitress were very warm and friendly. I think our waitress was having a bad day. Come here for a drink, or don't. You decide. Served only in the bar area (inside or outside), the selections are varied enough for those who like cooked and raw choices. I began with a $5 beer since it was so hot. A yellow tail and scallion cut roll and a salmon skin hand roll (not crisp) at $5 each started things off, segued into $5 tempura green beans and another order of the yellow tail cut roll. We came here for dinner so we ordered from the main menu not the happy hour. Try the hot eggplants if you like sweet miso. The tobanyaki tofu and mushrooms come out on a sizzling grill, and we enjoyed this dish as well. The Chilean sea bass ($27) is delicious though it's a bit pricy, and it was a tad dry. Torn to give three Stars but please hear me out. Sushi Roku offers delicious sushi and appetizers and beverages. Their service is spot on and friendly as well as fast. Here is where they have a HUGE area of opportunity. Clean up the patio, improve food presentation and increase the quantity of food you will receive. Patio: Bus pans visible , cleaning supplies laying out, caution tape , bird poop all over planters, floors. If you will be spending $100 for a can barely fill you up dinner , you should be in a nice setting that is clean and organized. With all of the many many wait staff, bussers and managers walking around there is no attention to detail. My suggestion is to have 5 less tables outside and really go for that cleanliness goal. The bus pans were not being used. They just sat there looking dingy. The food is high quality but you feel really let down when it gets there and looks so plain. Zero presentation effort. This is the time to set yourself a part from the other Sushi places. To spend $60 on sushi and receive 18 smaller pieces is a let down. If Salmon is listed as an ingredient and there is only tiny strip of it on one piece perhaps change the menu descriptions. At any other place you would be satiated, we were both still hungry after dinner and slightly disappointed. Again, taste all good, presentation and ambiance greatly can use a boost! Management can really improve a few things and give their restaurant a boost. The ramen was very well seasoned but with one tiny tiny piece of tough chashu on the bottom I was disappointed again. read more

I ordered the omakase option, and the sushi they served were salmon and yellowtail, with 0 twist. This instantly raised a red flag, since they were serving supermarket sushi on a 75 dollar supposedly fine dining course. The nigiri sushi was pretty decent; the fish and rice stuck together unlike how it falls sometimes at Sugarfish, but the rice is on the lighter side of seasoning providing a subtle sweetness and acidity to help highlight the fish. Came here for a belated Valentine's day dinner, and was pretty excited given all the amazing reviews on Yelp. We made a reservation ahead of time, which is a plus! When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and showed our table. The service was very quick, prompt, and response. I enjoyed the ambience and the decor with the sparkly lights, bamboo, and romantic lighting- definitely not your traditional sushi experience -- more like an Americanized/fusion sort of experience; there's a bar too with a large screen TV that plays sports while a separate section with tables for regular dining. We started off with drinks- I got the lychee mojito which was sharp, light, and had a tinge of lychee flavor in it. As for dinner, we ended up ordering the fried calamari, which was delicious- the "fried" portion wasn't too dry or hard, as I have had negative experiences with before; it was juicy, tangy, and chewy. The Japanese fried chicken was something we threw on last minute, which was tender and soft; the sauce was what made the dish! We also ordered the crunchy spicy tuna roll, which was hefty and sooo filling. The ume chef special was also delicious, as all the fish are smooth, buttery, and flavorful. Finally, the toro was the STAR of the show! Slabs of buttery, fatty fish that just slips off the tongue. We ordered a chocolate lava cake (shaped in a heart!) to end the night, which was perfect-- we walked away with a huge smile on our faces and full bellies! My family of 8 came for my brother's bday, as this is his favorite place. First we made reservations which I recommend. We got to sit in this cool spot surrounded by Neolithic rocks. This is an expensive, really nice place to go for a special occasion, especially if you are a sushi connoisseur. I recommend getting the Matsu dinner. It comes with 8 pieces of nigiri for $42. Yep.... That's right and worth every penny. Each piece is a premium grade fish complimented with unique and amazing toppings like caviar, truffle oil and uzu jelly. The ankimo was top notch. The uni was great and even some in our party that don't usually care for it, enjoyed it. We started the dinner with three plates of raw oysters.....divine. I was hesitant going here because I saw the 3.8 star rating on yelp. Although it's a good rating, I've been to other sushi places with a higher rating. However, I was pleasantly surprised with everything sushi Roku had to offer. First, their service is impeccable with waiters always being there for you even before you ask them for anything. Second, their fish quality is some of the highest I've ever had. The salmon melted in my mouth, and the spicy tuna was to die for. All in all, there's nothing more I could ask for. I love coming here not just because of the fresh sushi but also because of the ease. We have a lil baby so for us it's important to get seated right away and to be able to run out when he gets too fussy. We called on a Saturday to ask how long we would wait to get seated outside. Connor was working and he said we can get seated if we came at the moment. We said we were 20 min away and he said not to worry that he would take care of us. We walked in and had a reserved table. Loved that I didn't even ask for it but simply told him we have a baby and just wanted to enjoy a good vibe with some good sushi. Had a great time the last time we were here but tonight. I had the feeling of preferential treatment towards Caucasian customers over Asian customers. Tonight is a cold night for outdoor dining. There is a table next to us that is empty and a directional heater is pointing towards our table when a Caucasian family sat next to our table the hostess literally took the heater and pointed it to them leaving us in the cold.
