I would give this one a fat zero if I could. My girlfriend who is sick ordered takeout. She's eaten there several times and the presentation of the food was what you would expect from a $14 roll. The Vons across the street has better sushi than what we received this evening and she paid $66. She decided to take the food back for a refund but one waitress said that they don't do refunds and took the food and receipt from her without any more explanation on how she can get a refund from Uber eats. I had to go over there after she came home with just an empty bag, we explain to the manager what happened and that we want our food and the receipt for that food back. Good rolls, good price. Location, 50/50. Centrally located in LBC's east arts village but also across from the grimiest Vons. Not their fault tho. Staff are super nice and they kick out the orders fast, fresh and to my standards. During COVID they, like many other businesses, opened up a parklet seating area. It was fab for us as we like to stop and eat while on evening walks with our dog. (Sadly, the city bureaucracy screwed. This one up for more than 100 businesses citywide in order to make an extra buck and due to the whining of the snooty OC housewives side of town). Now we only order takeout and bring it home but still solid offering for the price. Service staff is lovely and it makes my mouth happy. ;) Recommendations: Massive menu, give it all a try. Yeah, this place knows what they're doing. It's not wild, crazy, pretentious, overpriced... but it's clean and it's cute enough. The servers, every one, were attentive but not hovering, friendly but not overly familiar. Our waitress made rockstar recommendations, I was feeling ambivalent so just told her to bring me the best two rolls... American Gangster and Syndicate, I think they were maybe called, and they were just awesome. Big rolls, fresh, flavorful. The shishito peppers were perfectly done too. Sake was cold and creamy. They let us pick our table and had lemon water and complimentary miso soup ready for us the moment we sat down. The menu was extensive but wasn't overwhelming. We got two handrolls yellow tail with scallions and salmon with avocado. We also got a couple orders of salmon and yellowtail nigiri. The handrolls were great. I really liked the yellow tail - scallions added a nice crunch. The nigiri was amazing!! The salmon was so rich yet smooth and the yellow tail had a buttery texture and delicate flavor. Great spot to have sushi/maki for lunch! It seems to be the common practice now for most sushi places to have lunch specials...not just one or two rolls on sale (like it would be for a typical happy hour), but having a variety pack of common, inexpensive fish and rolls prepared in different ways. It's a great opportunity to try a restaurant's menu, and if the quality of the fish is good, one can assume it gets carried over to their more expansive menu. Plus some of the restaurants will go a little further and include soup/salad/app....following the model that Chinese restaurants have done for the lunch crowd. Our initial choice for sushi fell through, so instead of going to our usual sushi chain (Kura) where prices are the same for lunch and dinner, we did a quick search and found sushi mafia close by. We found free street parking a block away. We were very happy to discover that Sushi Mafia had a well-defined lunch menu, and the prices were really good...one of the better choices for lunch we've found. It is only available from 12 - 3, M-F. The sushi lunch specials came with a satisfying bowl of miso soup (plenty of tofu and seaweed) and a side salad (very pretty) with house dressing. The vegetables were fresh (even had an orange slice)...and came with a fork without even asking. We shared the sushi & Roll lunch and the roll lunch (shrimp tempura, spicy salmon, and salmon avocado). The pictures will describe it better...but suffice it to say, all of it was good...and a steal for the price ($14 and $15). It did take a bit of time for the rolls to come out after placing the order, but as mentioned we had soup and salad to tidy us over. I'm pretty sure the 'Shrimp salad sushi' was really a seafood salad (made out of imitation crab/surimi)...maybe they added ground shrimp to it? In any case, it was probably the weakest piece out of all that we ate. The servers were super attentive, keeping our water always full and clearing our dishes. When we asked for the check, we were handled a table side register, where you can do everything yourself to pay. As long as the kitchen is able to deliver the sushi in a quick fashion, one could absolutely take their 1 hour lunch break to have a meal here. This being so close to where we are, it's definitely at the top of our list if friends are over and want affordable but good sushi. read more

Service was great and always has been. I was a regular at this place during COVID, and they kept it solid throughout! I am picky about the temperature of my sushi, and it is always nice and chilled here. I am not always a big fan of "fancy" complicated rolls, but there are a few here that are very good, I really like the Gangster Roll and the Mafia Roll. Beer is cold and the standards like edamame and the crunchy tuna are very tasty. The inside of the restaurant could probably use a little attention, but everything is about this place is so good it doesn't really matter. We chose to go to Sushi Mafia based on the reviews and it was about 20 minute walk away from our hotel. The reviews did not disappoint. It was good busy on a Tuesday night, we found seating, and were serviced Miso soup right away. Our server was patient with us while we looked through our menu and I chose to go with the Tonkotsu ramen and my fiancé chose the chicken fried rice. We shared the shrimp tempura hand roll and wow it was delicious! The hand roll is an appetizer choice if you don't want to eat anything from the actual appetizer menu. I recently stopped in here on a Monday night for dinner and was shocked at how busy they were! Clearly a popular spot. Thankfully we were able to snag a table and didn't have to wait. I was really intrigued by all of the positive Yelp reviews. They have a great menu selection- your standard sushi options and even some extras. There was a bit of confusion with the waiter when we wanted to order sake and initially asked for one option but then switched to another. We have gone here for years. Tonight we went in ordered Katshu chicken and an Awesome roll. The woman server never brought the soup to us, the table that came after us got soup. I had to ask for soup. I got the chicken and my other half NEVER got the roll. People that came in after were getting their food. This was such a great find. We were in town for visit the aquarium and walked here for dinner. After we were seated, complimentary miso soup (the best I've had) was served. My kids loved the chicken katsu, my middle order the Fantastic four sashimi platter which was so good- four types of salad with four types of sashimi. Called to get an order of wontons and the guy was disturbingly rude. Not only did he just answer the phone and say what can I get you? No 'hello!' No 'hi Sushi Mafia!' Nothing. He said that it would be an hour and a half wait for just an order of wontons. I think that's pretty absurd for an appetizer that take maybe 3 minutes to cook. It was a pretty small restaurant, but great music and cute windows to see the neighborhood. Food was really great, we had some sushi rolls and the fish was great quality. I can see why Sushi Mafia is a favorite in DTLB. They have a pretty extensive menu offering hot appetizers from the kitchen, ramen, teriyaki, other noodle and rice dishes as well as sashimi and lots of rolls! I particularly love how they organize their rolls by type such as ones that are fried, baked, veggie, with shrimp tempura, fresh and no rice! It makes looking for what you want easy! Service is very welcoming and attentive. They won't turn you away 20 minutes before closing as long as you put in your order by closing time. I hate coming into a restaurant late, but we were close by, hungry and thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. As we waited for our drinks and food, they brought our setting, condiments and complimentary miso soup. I don't care for miso soup as it's more of a filler for me, but hubby does and happily slurped my complimentary serving. Spicy Triple Crunch $10 for two half pieces of sweet potato tempura topped with spicy tuna, shrimp and scallops. I've had this a couple times, and it wasn't really crunchy nor spicy. Big Boss $16 baked "baby lobster" or langostino with seared Cajun tuna and shrimp (actually was imitation crab) salad on top. I could tell the tuna was frozen, but to be fair, most average sushi places use frozen fish. American Gangster $17 of snow crab, which I didn't really taste, avocado, tuna, salmon, albacore, shrimp (atop like a Rainbow roll), tempura batter and various sauces drizzled over. Sounds like you're getting a lot based on the listed ingredients, but it's literally a bite of each. Overall, my mind hasn't been blown after trying their food a few times, but it still satisfies some common sushi and Japanese cuisine cravings. My partner and I LOVE sushi mafia! The fish is always fresh and the rolls are a work of art. The service is wonderful, even when you feel like you are forgotten, someone comes along and checks in on you or brings you your order at the perfect time. Chill vibes. Seating is tables and chairs with booths along the wall. Booth spots are typically busiest/taken up during lunch hour and people seem to stick around and chill after they are done with their food. I ain't mad at that! The vegetable tempura appetizer is so good! Not pictured but know it's flaky and cooked to perfection, not overcooked and perfectly crispy. The LB sun roll (pictured) is definitely shareable for two! It comes with 4 different types of fish. It tasted incredible. I usually need siracha and eel sauce with my sushi/sashimi but this was a star on its own. Y'all gotta give it a try. Hours vary so check their hours before going in! read more

I was so impressed by this small little sushi place downtown. This was my first time trying sushi in Long Beach and it was delicious! My friend and I shared 3 different rolls thinking we were starving and I was stuffed!! My favorite was probably The Godfather because of the different textures. The jalapeño also added a delicious kick to the roll but wasn't too overpowering. My second favorite was probably the yattsu roll. It was really unique as I've never had sushi without rice before. The fish was really fresh and perfect with some wasabi and soy sauce. The evil roll was also delicious but didn't stand out as much as the others. On its own the roll didn't have much flavor for me, but that sauce with it totally elevated the roll - I wouldn't have enjoyed it without it. We never needed to ask for menus, water, napkins or our plates cleared. They just made me feel, if I was the owner, I'd be very happy having them work there. Solid sushi spot in Long Beach. Plenty of street parking nearby. We got some appetizers - Shishito peppers and fried calamari - which were average. However, I thought the sushi was great - super fresh and tasty. At some places, I feel like different rolls end up tasting similar, but we tried three rolls which all tasted great while also clearly being different from each other.
