Stopped by after hearing good reports from several friends. Owner/chef John is so nice, cool, authentic person. The people there waiting for their food were all big fans of RetRoll Sushi. Parking can be challenging but manageable. We had a couple of the bentos which came with sushi rolls, and two sides. I got the spicy tuna rolls with tempura and seaweed salad. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and recommend this place! read more

I ended up giving this place another try and the sushi was great! I got a bento box and the seaweed salad and crab salad were generous portions and perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The only downside I have is I tried going a third time today and they were closed. I checked their instagram beforehand and there was no post about them being closed so I thought it was safe to make the journey over. Sadly, they had a closed sign at the window. Totally understandable that things happen with small business. It would just be nice to have a heads up online so we don't waste our time coming out here to not get what we came for. read more

I just accidently tried the best sushi. The buttery soft salmon, quality is top tier. The service is so sweet! Friendly and quick. While there isn't anywhere to sit it's a quick walk up to pick up and go. Very highly recommend read more

It's a really good sushi place but it takes forever to get your food. It's really small so I get on the weekends but during the week even if u call ahead and they tell u 30 mins prepare to wait 20 more after that because it won't be ready. Don't go or order ur your in a rush read more

Take out sushi! This spot is so cute! For a quicker way to satisfy a sushi craving, this is for sure a great option. If ya blink, you may miss it. Located right next to a small movie theater, and mostly recognized by the A-frame sign out front, is a walk up window to place your order. Food is made fresh while you wait. Took about 10 mins and my order was ready. Although 4th street can get quite busy, I was able to find parking right in front. Quality little place and prices are affordable. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Very good quality sushi in an unassuming tiny storefront. While I do miss Hip Pea dearly, I must admit it's nice having a good casual sushi option on 4th St convenient to me. Too bad the two couldn't coexist. I guess Jounetsu Ramen further west on 4th does some rolls but I haven't tried them so can't speak for their quality. The hubby and I decided to get some dinner here on a weeknight and got: Ultimate Roll - basically an omakase roll. The chef asks what you like and assembles something. I told him I was totally open and to make whatever. He asked if I liked eel (I do), and he came up with a roll with an eel base topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, crunchy tempura bits, masago, and eel sauce, which I asked for light (I hate goopy rolls). I was very pleased with this roll--it had good quality fish as well as good sushi rice and was assembled with care. Veggie Roll - fresh avocado, cucumbers and carrots with the aforementioned good rice. Simple, but well done. These weren't cheap, but I'd say reasonable for the quality. I'm looking forward to trying more of their offerings soon, like their poke bowls! The hubby was hoping to try some of their other vegan sushi that looked interesting, but according to the chef they weren't doing very well so he's discontinued them--bummer! At least most of the standard vegetarian options are vegan anyway. As with Hip Pea, just the small outdoor tables if you want to eat there--not the best on cold days, so I imagine most people get stuff to go. The chef is very personable and really cares about the food and customer service. I wish him the best and hope this place will be able to stick around! read more

A pickup window sushi joint for your takeout guilty pleasure? RetRoll recently replaced Hippea...and while I was so sad about the change because i loved those falafels, I recently decided to give them a shot during their sushi happy hour and I was not disappointed. I did ask the owner whether he would do an omakase for a budget, but he instead gracefully offered to help me order. I ended up going over budget, but it was worth it. I do wish their happy hour had a few other options (i.e. $2 off any roll) instead of the few rolls they offered, but nonetheless-if you're looking for some takeout sushi, definitely grab some sushi from here. They have a bunch of specialty rolls, as well as some classic ones. I do remember wishing they had a more classic yellowtail roll when I ordered, but either way don't let that deter you. This is a great takeout spot for sushi. Despite missing Hippea, I'm glad this neighborhood spot has come in to take its place and hopefully it's here to stay! read more

A few friends and I went to check out RetRoll Sushi Long Beach. Food was yummy, service was great, for a small take-out restaurant. We had placed our orders online, it was ready in the expected timeframe. The owner was very friendly and professional. We were blessed with a nice cool evening breeze too. John makes one hell of a sushi roll & my favorite favorite favorite roll is the Hawaiian Roll. I highly recommend ordering it if you're here. So glad to have a sushi spot on 4th street :) It's located next to the theatre & art du vin wine bar. I got the ultimate roll which is basically a roll they customize to your liking by asking what fish + sauces you like/don't like. I also got a spicy tuna roll which was tasty and classic. Everything was fresh & I waited about 10-15 minutes for everything to be ready. It's a walk up window so be prepared to eat it to-go! Absolutely love this place! There are a few seats outside on the sidewalk during business hours, but mostly a grab n go type set up. The wine bar next door lets you take the sushi there, which makes for a perfect combo! John takes great pride in his work, and it shows. His food to absolutely wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone in the area. My favorites are the Ultimate Roll and the Salmon Avocado Roll. read more

RetRoll is some super delicious and clean sushi. The location is perfect for a quick pick up and stroll, and the staff is friendly and attentive. We were just there on a busy Fourth Friday and found the staff to be very patient and helpful. I spend a lot of time working in Japan each year and sometimes I find the American versions of sushi to be overly complex and involving ingredients that really are not found in Japan. RetRoll is authentically clean and tasty. They are located right near the Art Theater and steps from loads of interesting shops. Oh and we recently discovered they deliver to the wine bar next door. #perfection read more

Fills the sushi void that existed on 4th street. Simple menu done very well. The tuna sushi was melt in your mouth fish quality; absolutely delicious. The Hawaiian roll was very tasty and the chefs choice roll was customized according to whatever you want pending availability. This was great to give some variety. It is set up as a takeaway window, but they had 3 tables on the sidewalk which we ate at and made for great people watching strolling retro roll. Caught a movie next door afterwards for the perfect date night. read more

This is a wonderful little sushi spot on 4th street, Retro Row. I was craving sushi and was able to quickly place my order through the Toast app. The avocado caterpillar roll was delicious and it tasted so fresh. The person at the window was really nice and I can't wait to stop by again. There are a few tables right outside in case you want to eat there. The hand roll was elegant, fresh, and delicious. I loved the seaweed. The Spicy Scallop was my favorite because of the quality ingredients and value. It was definitely spicy. The TNT Roll was amazing, but I had to remove the Jalapeño due to it kicking my ass. I'll definitely return because I had an exciting experience.

A couple things to know before you go: parking isn't great, and the restaurant gets busy. We showed up around 5:00 p.m. and only waited about 20 minutes, but I could see larger parties having a much longer wait. My go-to dish is the Pad Kra Prow Eggplant with chicken. It's a Thai basil stir-fry with eggplant, onion, and Thai chilis, and I absolutely love it. We also ordered the mussel curry, which my friend picked, and it completely surprised me. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but it was excellent. The standout, though, was the Khao Soi Noodle Soup with sliced rib-eye beef. Somehow I'd never ordered the dish they're most famous for, and now I understand why. It absolutely lived up to the hype. The broth with the rib-eye was incredible and is something I'd recommend to anyone visiting for the first time. My biggest criticism is that the rice portions feel smaller than they used to. With how much delicious curry and sauce you get, I found myself wishing there was just a little more rice to soak everything up. I also noticed that the green beans in the Pad Kra Prow Eggplant are very al dente. Personally, I'd prefer if they were blanched just a bit so they were slightly more tender. If the goal is to add texture, I'd almost rather see crunch come from something like cashews instead--but that's just my preference. For dessert, we had the mango sticky rice and another dessert with sweet milk dumplings and red beans. Both were fantastic and a great way to end the meal. Vibes of the restaurant are great. It's a small venue, but they work quickly, and a staff was very welcoming. Overall, Chiang Rai continues to be my favorite Thai spot in Southern California. If it's your first visit, the Khao Soi with sliced rib-eye is absolutely the dish I'd tell you to order.

We ordered quite a bit: spicy Pad Thai, Bang Bang Shrimp, Pad See Ew, mango sticky rice, and of course the Thai tea with the popsicle. I'll give credit where it's due. The Bang Bang Shrimp was easily the best thing we ordered and was absolutely delicious. The Thai tea popsicle also lived up to the TikTok hype, although the actual Thai tea itself was on the sweeter side. If you love sugar, you'll probably enjoy it. My biggest complaint with the food was the spicy Pad Thai. The flavor was great, but it came with what felt like a whole chicken farm and a cameo appearance from the noodles. I ordered Pad Thai, not chicken with noodle garnish. The Pad See Ew was also noticeably salty. Now you're probably wondering why I'm giving this place a low rating if most of the food was decent. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the meal. When it was time to pay, my aunt was figuring out how much everyone needed to Zelle her since the restaurant only allows a maximum of two cards for split payments. While we were trying to do the math, our waiter stood over us watching the payment screen like he was supervising a final exam. He was clearly waiting to make sure a tip was entered. My aunt politely asked him to give us a minute, and thankfully he walked away. Maybe when you see a family actively calculating a bill, that's your cue to...actually give them a minute. Keep in mind we also tipped 20% despite all this. Throughout the meal, he did stop by our table, but it rarely felt like he was checking in to make sure everything was okay. If anything I felt rushed. He also gave off that "customer service smile" that disappears the moment you stop looking. The cherry on top for me happened as we were leaving. We had been sitting on the outdoor patio talking for a bit after paying, which is pretty normal for my family. Before leaving, I went inside to ask where the restroom was. The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. It's unfortunate because the food had some highlights, and the restaurant itself has a cute atmosphere. But the service made it feel like customers are viewed more as transactions than guests. Between hovering over us during payment and questioning whether I even belonged there after spending money, I left feeling more unwelcomed than satisfied. I'll happily support a restaurant that appreciates my business instead of making me feel like I have to prove I earned the right to use the restroom after paying for dinner.

As we were served our drinks I overheard the manager speak with the table next to them he greeted them and mentioned he would be going to the liquor store. Sushi Mafia stood out for its unique fusion sushi and affordable prices. And did not disappoint! Being tempura lovers, we had to get the vegetable tempura that came out piping hot and 2pcs of each: broccoli, onion rings, sweet potato, pumpkin slice, shishito. Great start of our meal! Sushi Mafia has an extensive menu with 2 huge full pages anything your heart's desire, whether you're craving sashimi or any types of rolls: shrimp tempura, deep fried, no rice, vegetarian, baked, fresh or cooked. MAFIA sashimi specials, MAFIA specials, ramen or more traditional cooked entrées. Since we were in the mood for sushi and our first visit, we tried the MAFIA special Underboss and the FANTASTIC 4. Totally love it! Fresh fish and generous portions, great value for the price. Of course we have to try the rolls. Can't go wrong with the deep fried ROYAL STRAIGHT FLUSH roll. Thick and mouthful of delicious shrimp, eel, avocado & spicy tuna -- and eel sauce! Speaking of eel sauce. I always have to end my sushi meal with unagi! I made sure to save room for the eel bowl: UNAGI DON with 7 pieces of fresh water eel on steam rice with avocado and eel sauce. Excellent service, we felt welcomed the moment we stepped inside and love the casual chill vibes. Definitely have to come back soon to try more dishes! Mostly street parking in the area. We lucked out with a 2-hour street parking spot right in front of Sushi Mafia when we visited.

As a solo diner, I sat at the bar, and found the sushi chefs to be friendly, and low-pressure. The other customers at the bar were also personable.

Halibut or Catfish are my favorites, so having a carpaccio or crudo with Halibut is top tier! It was perfect in every way and spicy enough to keep me sweating. The Yellowtail was excellent and I used the ponzu & truffle oil from the carpaccio to dip the rice. I understand why they offer shooters here because I could've slammed a few ponzu shots. The salmon tatsed really fresh no fishy taste at all. And crunchy roll was actually crunchy. Serivce was quick and super friendly. Inside small but enough seating. Salmon skin salad: if you like salmon skin, this is yummy. A perfect crunch seasoned really well to complement the bed of greens. Furikake fries: thinly cut potato's with furikake seasoning paired with a sweet mustard dipping sauce. I would have enjoyed more Furikake on the fries, but that's just me. This place has real wasabi if you ask for it instead of the watered down stuff you usually get. It's actually pretty good! Overall great food and great service. I'd come back for sure!
