Went in for a quick bite mid-afternoon and unexpectedly stayed for an early dinner. That should tell you everything you need to know right there. Sat at the sushi bar. Ordered a small nigiri spread; yellowtail, kurodai, tuna and salmon. Mixed tempura. Green teas. The iced green tea came out cloudy and matcha forward and COLD in the best way. My companion is still talking about it. Also, genuinely excited to see kurodai on the menu. Everything was presented beautifully and the fish was fresh across the board. No complaints. The crispy rice though. Caramelized outside, warm and soft in the middle, and the spicy tuna on top is so light it's almost whipped. It comes loaded with mayo, sriracha and jalapeño so if you eat clean and sauce light, just know that going in. Still delicious either way. Easy parking. No wait. Fair prices. The space is nicer than you'd expect for a strip mall, cool art on the walls, comfortable seating at the sushi bar. Works for a date night. Works for a Tuesday. Long Beach has pretty good sushi. Overall, a decent sushi place with a good selection of fish. The chef was friendly and introduce one of his favorite types of fish, such as smoked saba, which I thought tasted very good. We were there for an early dinner in the middle of the week. So the place was empty with 2 other parties. The choice of fish were limited, and they did not have some items on the menu, which I was a little disappointed. And the chef mentioned he doesn't have uni, because there are not enough demands for it there, which I thought was surprising. Overall, the place is clean, good service, and decent sushi offering. We shared their chicken teriyaki plate and ordered their Maui rolls. We liked that the teriyaki sauce was served on the side allowing us to determine how much we wanted. This place has a killer lunch menu tuesday-Friday 11am-2pm. I got the sushi set with a spicy tuna roll, it comes with 10 pieces of sushi. Firstly, it comes with a miso soup, which they load with red seaweed and tofu. The sushi pieces come out and it's two pieces each of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, albacore, and shrimp. The sushi pieces were a great ratio of thick slices of fish and well seasoned rice. The fish was cold and fresh. The spicy tuna roll was also actually spicy and was a balance of spicy tuna, rice, and cucumber.  Everything was delicious, and for $22, this is a great deal. Based on reviews, I was excited to try this place but that turned into disappointment quickly. I'll start with the positive. The place was very clean and we were immediately welcomed & sat down. Service was good - the team was friendly and food came out quick. The issue was all around the flavor. We had a mixture of tempura and fresh rolls. One of the rolls that came out was somehow extremely salty. It was so salty that it was rough to eat it. The Tiger roll was the opposite but in a bad way - it had a sweet & sour sauce on top that was overpowering. Even the spicy mayo we had on the side had an odd smell to it. My husband and I have been going to Sushi Kinoya for the last year. It's in an unassuming location in the middle of a plaza in Long Beach. We probably go here at least once a month and every time we come to eat, the fish is always of super high quality cuts and the service is absolutely delicious! I decided to come check out their lunch special on a weekday and I was seated right away. I got the sushi set for $22 and it came with 10 pcs of sushi and your choice of California or spicy tuna roll and miso soup. The miso soup was okay, there wasn't that many seaweed and tofu compared to other places. I got the spicy tuna roll and it was pretty good. I don't want to sound harsh, but this is an honest review. I love food and I get very disappointed, when the quality doesn't match the price. First of all, this is my first time at this establishment. Sushi Kinoya changed ownership, last year, I believe. i've been wanting to try this place. When I entered the restaurant, I noticed that it felt warm. The ambience was simple and clean. We were greeted by a nice server. We were the only two people in the restaurant at 4 PM. The food is average, at best. I would rather eat sushi from the counter at sprouts and Ralph's. I feel like the quality of their fish is below average. A good way to test if a sushi restaurant is decent is by the taste of their spicy tuna cut rolls. When the spicy tuna cut rolls came out, it was quite off. It looked like they had used a white fish that was dyed red to make it look like tuna. Also, they added way too much sesame seed oil to cover the taste of old fish... We also ordered a dish that had albacore on top, and the thinly sliced fish were separating and falling apart. The albacore slices looked like they had been frozen and thawed out many times. We are never going back there again. I regret that my friend prob spent over $110 before tip on different dishes. The fried stuff were OK, but the "fresh" fish were all barely edible. The new owner, and his sushi, chefs, really need to spend time and effort in quitting a menu that provides fresh and delicious fish options. The quality of fish that they use, is not it! . read more

It'll met my friend here for dinner for my early birthday celebration! We ordered black cod, salmon roll, a real blue crab California roll, and a Hamachi sashimi and ponzu sauce. All of it was good except I would skip out on the black miso cod. $30 and it was very unimpressive. It's been almost ten years since my last review, and it deserves an update. First and foremost, the sushi is as good as ever. My son even ranked it higher than our other favorite sushi restaurant in Long Beach, and that's high praise. My tempura bento box was simple yet satisfying. All the items were lovingly prepared, and the tempura was fried to a crispy perfection (without being too greasy). Service was even better than I remembered, and it really feels like a mom and pop operation. The interior seats less than twenty customers, and I think the table arrangement was still stuck in pandemic, social-distancing era, further restricting the dining space. It doesn't take away any of the charm and dining experience though. The price was also outstanding. It's rare to find a sushi joint that costs less than $20 per person. Parking can be a competitive sport in this crowded shopping center, but you can perceive it as pre-meal entertainment. read more

This place is seriously price gouging. I am unsure how they've received such high reviews unless perhaps things have changed recently because of inflation? For a $10.50 cut roll of soft shell crab, we literally got maybe at best 50% portion of any other sushi restaurant. Yes at another restaurant the price of the roll would be slightly more but for 20-30% less price we are getting 50% less food. Our $25.50 chirashi was similarly small and didn't have premium cuts to support the price (no scallop, no amebi, no ikura, non house made tamago, etc). Our friend got hot food (udon) and also felt similarly disappointed with portion size. My husband and I ordered a salmon roll, a soft shell crab cut roll, a chirashi bowl, and a tempura dinner and we were still hungry and had to go elsewhere after. The service seemed short staffed. Our server at one point just asked us to write down our order on a piece of paper and hand it to her. We never got a water refill or tea refill despite having empty cups. read more

Sushi Kinoya is by far the best sushi restaurant in Long Beach! Their miso soup is perfectly balanced so you taste a variety of flavors with each spoonful. The ambience of the dining areas are so delightful that I prefer dining in vs take out. I usually will meet up with a friend for lunch. Finally got to try Kinoya under new ownership and I wasn't impressed. Albacore is my favorite and Kinoya used to make it the absolute best so I tried the Bonsai Roll, the Hot Albacore Roll, and some pieces of Albacore sushi. Honestly they were fine! They just tasted like every other sushi place now and the prices certainly reflected that. Kinoya used to have this ridiculously good garlic ponzu sauce and spicy mayo that went on the rolls but I guess they did away with that which is disappointing. I also wasn't impressed with how my rolls were cut up. The pieces were pretty uneven, some big some small and the big pieces would fall apart when I tried to grab with chopsticks. Old Kinoya rolls were uniform and bite sized. Honestly I'm pretty sad I won't ever have my favorite albacore roll again. End of an era I suppose. read more
