Traveling again... I went here at the recommendation of a co-worker, and am glad I took it. It's in a ritzy part of Long Beach (I know that sounds redundant, but Naples Island has some serious money...), so it's on the pricey side, but has the quality and creativity to back those prices up. I had a couple of appetizers I've never had before: miso-glazed eggplant and smoked octopus carpaccio with lemon oil and paprika. Incredible! The sushi was also well-done. Salmon belly nigiri, smelt roe, snow crab hand-roll and a salmon skin roll, topped with bonito strips were all delicious and well-crafted. Sushi here was straight fire! Been living near the Naples area for the last 4 years always saw Kihon but never pulled the trigger. After a long day in LA, we came back and ate here. The parking lot is very slim and small but we found parking easily. We called in advance to put our names down but the host made it super difficult because she gave us a table and then called later to ask if we wanted to sushi bar. We walked in and there were plenty of tables. We got their rainbow roll which was really good and all the fish tasted fresh. Then we went crazy with the squid and tuna nigiri. Tasted very authentic and solid. Another thing we tried was their pan fried gyoza which was delicious add to our meal. Service was overall pretty good, it was a busy night here. read more

Excellent and very fresh sushi! Our family favorite! We ordered take out tonight. The place was packed on a Tuesday evening! Nice to see! Ordering online is very simple through ChowNow. It's ready on time for pick-up. The sushi and salad are packed very well wiith their individual sauces along with wasabi and ginger! We ordered three rolls: Spicy Tuna, White Russian, and Caterpillar. All three were amaxing. Definitely the best and freshest sushi around! We always get a salad. We love their Miso dressing. You can tell their dressing and sauces are inhouse prepared. Seriously, Kihon has the best sushi in Long Beach. If there was ever such a thing as modern Japanese, Kihon is your girl. Kihon is a very good blend of traditional sushi with some Americanized quirks. The menu isn't particularly expansive, but it's pretty dialed in. We started with lots of nigiri - 2 pieces come per order: -yellowtail ($7) -salmon ($7.50) -salmon roe ($7) -bluefin tuna ($9.50) The fish was melt in your mouth quality. Every single piece of nigiri was exceptionally fresh. We ordered the Dungeness Crab roll ($17) and it was so good. The roll comes with baked Dungeness crab and spicy tuna in soy paper. Baking the Dungeness crab really draws out the sweetness of the crab. The crab as well as the spicy tuna is loosely enveloped in rice then rolled in soy paper which really highlights all the flavors. Ten. Ngl. I bookmarked Kihon purely based on a passing recommendation. Someone told me to try the salmon with crispy spinach long ago and I final did. Honestly, it was such an unexpectedly good bite. Another visit to this wonderful restaurant. Great selection of food and good service. They have moved just next door but it feels as nice as the old place. I must say it is a bit pricey because we always end up ordering many different items as they feel so light and not super filling. In any case great place and we will come back. Long overdue review. We live across the street and would eat here almost everyday but the customer service here is ridiculously poor. Last night upon arrival to pick my order the hostess was reading a book! She barely put the book down , looked in the direction of the kitchen and in an unfriendly, unwelcoming tone says the order is not ready. Order brought up . Only 2 packets of soy sauce for 3 orders of sushi and a mussel appetizer. It's like pulling teeth trying to get extra anything here. And on one dine visit, our server completely ghosted us after delivering our food! Had to go hunt down the host for our check! read more

So delicious!! The toro tasting is delectable and is such a great price for such fresh toro of 3 different types. You can have them scale it based on your party size so as a party of 3 we got 3 pieces of each toro and it was perfect. The mushrooms are absolutely incredible. Great vibe/atmosphere inside and love the Big Lebowski themed cocktails! Service was so friendly and attentive, our waitress stood out as being so kind and helpful! If you can imagine the island of Naples as heart-shaped, then Kihon is located at the center of the heart. With each tantalizing bite, the food goes straight to your heart. I thought I had sampled almost all of the sushi places in Long Beach, but I am embarrassed to have missed this one until now. There are many excellent sushi joints in Long Beach, but none could rival Kihon. The interior dining space is arranged traditionally, with a long bar facing the sushi chefs and other tables for larger parties. I went alone so I sat at the bar, having an intimate interaction with the chef. I ordered the giant scallops, blue fin tuna, and salt-grilled eel. Each harbored its distinct flavor, and each shined at serenading the taste buds. After three courses, I asked the chef for a recommendation. I revelled with the rosy sea bass, a product of pinnacle culinary endeavor for a few fleeting moments, but my memory allows me to savor the experience long after. Went here prior to the naples Christmas Boat parade. Seated and Greeted at 5pm for a party of 7. Ordered a pitcher of Asahi, wine, and Appetizers. All came very quickly. Ordered our main entrees of Sushi. Received within 10 to 15 minutes. The place quickly became crowded. 80% of the food was delivered in a timely manner. The other 20% we had to remind our waiter a couple of times, stating if our other orders are going to be served soon. All was delicous, The portion size was small compared to other Sushi joints. Keep in mind, the surrounding area is above the middle class ratio. Meaning you know where you are at when you order food. Expensive and serving size to be small. The place has a warm family feeling. Overall, I will come back. Would not be my first choice, due to parking, cost and quantity. The quality is a given. The only thing bad about this place is that there is only 1 restroom for the entire restaurant! Overall a thumbs up. read more

Price is ok and I think that's the main selling point. The food is ok but for a sushi restaurant they don't have many roll options. Most come with a soy paper instead of seaweed and their rolls aren't the typical ones you'd find. I wasn't a fan of their salmon roll. The best part was the shishito peppers. Trying it once was enough but I wouldn't return. They do have a bar with sake, beer options that look good. Overall if you're in Naples you should try but i wouldn't go out of my way. read more

We came in on a rainy Saturday night. Lucky we snagged a seat at the bar. The service was super friendly and the chef was very accommodating to explain the different options. I got the sushi menu and with no prices I wanted to make sure that I understand what I was ordering in terms of cost. Because I have had this happen to me before and I got very excited and ordered a bunch of items without knowing the price. I will never do that again. So I asked the waiter to give me an idea of how much each item would roughly cost. And off we go. I ordered the trio tuna which had different types of Toro. That was delicious. And then I picked a few more items from the sushi menu to complete my meal. The fish were all fresh and prepared beautifully. We ordered a few more items off the menu like salmon carpaccio with crispy spinach and spicy tuna on crispy rice, both good crisp. A pitcher of beer to wash down all the yumminess. This is a good place to relax and have good rolls and sushi with beer. My only suggestion is ask the price on the menu. So you won't be surprised at the end of your meal. They will politely tell you. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing. I ordered a $15 Chardonnay that was advertised as a 6-ounce pour. When the glass arrived, it was clearly short -- closer to 4 ounces. When I mentioned it, the server explained that they pour from a small carafe into the glass. I asked to see the carafe, poured the wine back into it myself, and it only filled it halfway, confirming it was under-poured. Instead of simply correcting the mistake and bringing the additional couple of ounces, the situation escalated unnecessarily. My glass and the carafe were taken away, and another server returned with a different glass, pointing out "lipstick" on the rim -- despite the fact that I wasn't wearing lipstick. So not only was the pour short, but the glassware appeared questionable as well. What should have been an easy fix turned into an uncomfortable exchange over two ounces of wine. We spent over $100 on dinner and weren't trying to get something for free -- just what was paid for. The sushi itself was fine, but the handling of this situation left a bad impression. A simple correction and better customer service would have made all the difference. read more

This review is long overdue. We love going here. The food is amazing. We like to go to the sushi bar and do the omakase, it's always perfect. We also had a great time bringing our kid with us and sitting at a table. Everyone who works here seems happy and they always remember us. With the remodel, it's even lovelier inside than before. I had walked by Kihon countless times, but was hesitant to try it due to the font used for the name in kanji being so unauthentic. I'm glad I finally tried it though, as the food exceeded my expectations. Kihon is one of the few businesses still standing in this plaza. The interior is pretty and service was excellent. I believe there were some actual Japanese chefs working in the kitchen too. The menu is a decent size and food is definitely pricey but the quality is good. I particularly enjoyed the crunchy salmon skin hand roll (albeit a bit small) plus the miso eggplant dish. The mushroom miso soup was also tasty. I thought the menu said the ceviche dish had octopus, but there was no octopus in our ceviche. I feel like a measure of a good Japanese restaurant is also how tasty their steamed white rice is, and Kihon's was fluffy and warm. The spinach in the salmon and spinach dish was a bit oily and the texture a bit too melt-in-your-mouth (in a bad way, like disintegration) for my tastes. I've been going to Kihon for years and I don't normally leave reviews, but I love this place so much! I love taking my friends here when they visit because the food has always been amazing. this place is no frills, no loud music, no overcomplicated menu. It has exactly what you need. I love getting their nigiri, hand roll, and the white russian roll. Sometimes I get the seared salmon with the spinach crisps, too. All good quality. Over a decade in Long Beach and I have passed Kihon hundred of times thinking "there's no way that place is good." And I am ecstatic to have been wrong. We came in without reservations thinking we wouldn't need them but we were wrong. The host was able to get us in (whew) and we enjoyed a couple of rolls, the yellowtail collar, a crab hand roll and some other things. They have lots of gluten free options and even offer gf tamari. My favorite was The Dude, despite its name. The dab of yuzu made it special. I absolutely loved my glass of Satellite. I've been searching for bottles ever since. It's taken years for us to try it and we are glad we did. We will be back (with resys) soon! read more

He continued to get our order incorrect, and instead of being apologetic to us, we could hear him placing blame on us when relaying this info back to the chefs and going around the restaurant to talk about us inside a very small restaurant. Not sure where or how this behavior is deemed acceptable, but there's no way we will ever return. Far better sushi spots around Long Beach worth attending. Disgusting behavior. read more

This is our favorite local spot for omakase sushi and izakaya-style dishes. Staff are super friendly. Good sake selection. Fresh seasonal fish that's nicely, gently seasoned. I brought my in-laws from Wisconsin who don't have this kind food in their town, and they were so impressed. read more

Really good sushi! We had handrolls (snow crab/spicy albacore/spicy salmon), yellow tail- cut roll, and several tapas style starters. Spicy ceviche w/wonton chips, tempura calamari, green lip mussels, beef short ribs, and karaage (fried chicken). This was enough food for 3 people in our group. The sake we had is one of the best, in my opinion, kikusui, which was a little bit sweet and not too dry. This sweet sake went very well with the hand rolls and the sushi. The service was so-so our waiter was very nice and pleasant, but not too motivated or quick. For a small place, 25 people, including a small bar (sushi) seating, plus outdoor, it gets very busy on the weekends. So, it was a little bit loud and the lighting was light with the sun setting. I haven't put a review in a long time ! But this place deserves one. I moved to Long Beach 6 months ago and so far is my favorite sushi spot in LB . Everything so fresh, I love that their menu is a little more open and up scale to a regular sushi place , Monk fish liver , AJI, Negi- Toro . Amazing oysters as well, and the service ufff I can't stop taking about the service not just because that's what I do but when you can see that the chef can make a connection with all his customers , that's when I decided to even stay longer try a lot of things ! Checked out this small Japanese restaurant and was very pleasantly surprised! Located on the outskirts of 2nd street, Kihon serves sushi and small Japanese bites. We tried the eggplant, short rib, ramen, and yellowtail jalapeño sashimi. The nasu miso eggplant was surprisingly delicious! It practically melted in my mouth and each bite was so flavorful. I had high expectations for the short rib, but it was just ok. Too saucy and not as tender as I would've liked. The ramen was yummy, but you could probably find better at another ramen restaurant. Another first for me here. Clearly growing up in the area, there's plenty of places I haven't tried. Maybe it could be they're new or I just haven't noticed. Well, ended up here as a second option. Restaurant are opening back for outdoor dining and it's also Valentine's weekend. Trying to find a place that's actually open for reservations is kind of hard at the moment. Most place aren't taking reservations at the moment and it could be over an hour wait. Hence we ended up here. Even with a wait of about 45 min, it was still faster than the original sushi place we were intended to go to. Anyhow, wait time ended up being about half an hour. Outdoor seating of course and we were seated next to a heater which was nice. Our waiter was quite nice. I'm not sure if the menu was original or if it was covid menu . As it limited. The sushi menu was good but when you got to the rolls, it wasn't a big selections. Not sure if that's their original menu but it was limited. It didn't take long for the food to come out. We had a couple of the rolls and ramen. Ramen was good but could have been a little hotter in temp. Rolls was good. Towards the end, we still didn't receive one of our order. Not sure if they forgot or it wasn't place as it was an appetizer but it finally came out. Overall, nice place. Food was good but ramen could have been hotter. Toro tasting was very good. Everything else was kind of a miss. Albacore with crunchy onion was basically a big thing of fried onion, fish cuts were just ok. White Russian was absolutely disgusting; nothing but bad texture and overpowering sauce. Dungenous crab roll also had bad, mushy, texture, and overpowering mayo taste.
