The sushi is good, but after several visits, we won't be coming back--especially with so many better options nearby. On our last visit, we were charged for an extra side without being told it would cost extra. When we politely asked about it, the waitress responded with a sarcastic attitude instead of trying to help. The manager was polite, but we hope they do a better job of being transparent about additional charges. The service has consistently felt unfriendly, and the air conditioning hasn't seemed to work during multiple visits, which is concerning for a sushi restaurant. My boyfriend, my brother, and I came here last night because this is a sushi spot we've enjoyed coming to before. Unfortunately, this experience completely changed how we feel about this place. We were excited to order the calamari, and after eating about 2-3 pieces each, all three of us noticed an extremely strong ammonia smell and taste. It was so bad that we literally had to spit it out. We immediately brought it to the staff's attention and even took the calamari up to them so they could smell it themselves. What bothered us the most was how unbothered everyone seemed, including the staff and the people working behind the sushi bar. We were simply told that they would take the calamari off our bill, but that completely missed the point. We weren't concerned about paying for the dish. We were concerned that three people had just eaten seafood that smelled and tasted seriously off, and no one seemed concerned about the potential food safety issue or even tried to make the situation right. It honestly killed our entire dinner. We left feeling uncomfortable and disappointed, especially because we had liked coming here before. When a customer brings up something potentially serious involving seafood, I would expect much more concern and urgency than what we experienced. This was once a favorite Sushi spot for us. We stopped by for lunch, just in time to order off of the lunch special menu. I tried the hand wrap lunch special, which allows you to choose three and comes with miso soup and salad for $25. The miso soup arrived and sadly it was not good. It was watered down and just not worth finishing. I chose Tuna, Albacore, and Salmon for my hand wraps. They arrived looking delicious with sliced cucumbers, sesame, and avocado. Unfortunately, the fish was not fresh and I had to send back the tuna, which had so much connective tissue. I could barely take a bite of it. The server offered to replace the tuna with salmon which I appreciated. We also ordered the Dragon Roll and Lobster Roll, which my husband enjoyed. The only reason for the three stars. Still solid picks. Overall, we won't be back. The fish used in the hand wraps were so off putting. The service was good, but the ambiance wasn't pleasant. We had never had a roll with cucumber of the outside but it was SO GOOD that even my kid who doesn't eat veggies said it was pretty good. That is a major compliment- trust me! The fish quality and taste were pretty mediocre. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, the sashimi set, vegetable tempura, and sex on the beach roll. The vegetable tempura was nice and crispy. But in terms of the fish, everything tasted just ok. Maybe that's why the restaurant specializes in rolls so the sauces add more flavor to the fish. My brother-in-law from Missouri was in town for business. He texted "is my office anywhere near your house?". Turns out he was 5 minutes away. I picked him up after work and asked what CA cuisine he wanted. He picked sushi. I was trying to find somewhere cool and this place was near the beach and had great reviews. We walk in the door and a stench punches us in the face. It smelled so bad in here I was instantly embarrassed and whispered to my wife "lets go somewhere else". My brother-in-law said "nah, it just smells like somebody burnt something" so we stayed. Unlike every single other person who walked in the door we were ignored and stood there until somebody realized we weren't leaving and sat us. Our waiter didn't seem interested in serving our table either. Every other customer they yelled out greetings and treated them like stars. This is why I can't give the place 5 stars. Food though was 5 stars all the way. For being from Missouri my brother in law was a sushi pro. He ordered a sashimi bowl. He was very specific on what type of fish he wanted and the waiter kept arguing saying "it's chef's choice" he said "well, this is the choice he's going to make". Again, service was very odd here compared to the treatment other tables were getting. The bowl that arrived was a work of art. Beautiful presentation of different fish. We were all amazed. He loved it. I ordered the happy hour special. The description was you picked three different rolls and got a smaller portion of them, miso soup, salmon skin salad, and a drink. The waiter carries out this gigantic wooden structure and I'm thinking "wow, that must be a family platter". He then sits is down in front of me, it's my happy hour special! Damn! This was HUGE. Three beautiful rolls and all three tasted totally different. Most places these days everything tastes like a CA roll slathered in sauce. These all tasted distinct. The glutton I am I devoured my entire family platter. The salmon skin salad was the best I've had and I'd come back just for that! Other tables were getting these giant wooden staircase looking things that sushi was placed on. Presentations here were works of art. My wife ordered a salmon philly roll, some gyoza, and veggie tempura. She also enjoyed her meal. Besides the initial stench and the really bizarre service we all had a great time and enjoyed our food. I would definitely come back to try more things. What a nice place! I came in on a Saturday evening. Surprisingly it was fairly empty but it didn't affect my experience one bit. This place is nice and can be found tucked in Seal Beach next to the Vons. The staff were super friendly and the dishes came out with some pizzazz and I was here for the show. ... I can't keep up with myself here. I've been here twice in the last week. First being Friday night with some friends and then I asked to come here for my birthday dinner with my husband on Sunday night. Both times were fantastic and our server both times was Molly. We tried the salmon skin salad, the awesome roll, the seared yellow tail with spinach, the tofu salad and the live scallops. With my husband, we had two basic "rolls", the cucumber roll with no rice, the DELICIOUS shiso peppers (Free with Yelp check in, an $8 value) and 4 orders of TORO. The toro was THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD, or that I recall having from anywhere. Buttery was an understatement. SO DELICIOUS!!! The sushi and sashimi presentation here is OVER THE TOP. It may take a little longer than usual because they do not spare any attention to detail. (See photos) Will definitely be back... as soon as I can round up more friends! ... Most likely next week. I came here after discovering Papa Poke and it was one of the most magical sushi experiences I have ever had. We were immediately greeted and welcomed as we opted to sit at the sushi bar. There is a large sushi bar in the back left corner and lots of tabletops with both chair and booth seating. The menu is very extensive and took me a while to go through. We ordered the 8 pcs sashimi set, Sammy Roll, and the Triple Tuna roll. The sashimi set comes with 8 pcs of sashimi, 4 pcs of the Absolutely Fabulous roll, seaweed salad, miso soup, cucumber salad, vegetable and shrimp tempura. The sashimi tasted so fresh and melts in your mouth. The Sammy Roll comes with fresh jalapeños on top and was so spicy, we had to take the jalapeño off. The Triple Tuna was ok, but out of the 3 rolls we ordered, the Absolutely Fabulous was our favorite. The service was great. Very attentive. Checked in many times and was great with suggestions. This is our go to sushi restaurant these days; and we've never been disappointed. The interior is brightly lit with a fun mural on both walls, and the service is always very friendly. My absolute favorite role on the menu is the fantastic four, which is cucumber wrapped and has a fantastic sesame dipping sauce. The triple tuna, IDK, Vegas, and absolutely fabulous rolls are all excellent as well. The Ryokan salad is usually good, just make sure that the seafood that is in it that day is all stuff you like (made one mistake one time where it was heavy on the eel and nobody at our table was a big fan).
