The Miso Soup was watered down.
    Yvette M.

This was once a favorite Sushi spot for us. We stopped by for lunch, just in time to order off of the lunch special menu. I tried the hand wrap lunch special, which allows you to choose three and comes with miso soup and salad for $25. The miso soup arrived and sadly it was not good. It was watered down and just not worth finishing. I chose Tuna, Albacore, and Salmon for my hand wraps. They arrived looking delicious with sliced cucumbers, sesame, and avocado. Unfortunately, the fish was not fresh and I had to send back the tuna, which had so much connective tissue. I could barely take a bite of it. The server offered to replace the tuna with salmon which I appreciated. We also ordered the Dragon Roll and Lobster Roll, which my husband enjoyed. The only reason for the three stars. Still solid picks. Overall, we won't be back. The fish used in the hand wraps were so off putting. The service was good, but the ambiance wasn't pleasant. Listening to the comments and odd noises coming from the sushi chefs and staff was weird and unpleasant.

We absolutely love Sushi Ryokan! We found this spot a few years ago and this review is long overdue. The sushi rolls (and honestly everything on the menu) are always delicious. The customer service is amazing everyone is so welcoming and always goes above and beyond. We've tried other sushi places in the area, but nothing compares. A must-try! Thank you Ramoncito ( Monchi!

Great sushi! Miss the happy hours though! The Lobster roll and the first kiss are my favorite! Oh and don't forget about bitchy bitchy. Absolutely fabulous!

Yellowtail sashimi (hamachi), Fresh Cucumber Salad, and Spicy Garlic Edamame all 10/10

I came here after discovering Papa Poke and it was one of the most magical sushi experiences I have ever had. We were immediately greeted and welcomed as we opted to sit at the sushi bar. All staff were extremely welcoming and attentive. We were recommended the toro sushi and it was so buttery and melts in your mouth. The hamachi was so fresh and tasty. The spicy tuna crispy rice here!!!!! Shoutout to Em our sushi chef for making everything perfect. Just found my new favorite sushi spot.

What a lovely lunch! The happy hour menu had amazing prices and everything tasted fabulous. We tried the Sex on the Beach roll, the First Kiss roll, and the calamari (pictured)-- which were all included on the happy hour menu. The service was very friendly and speedy, no complaints here! I will most definitely be returning.

First time trying Sushi Ryokan! I ordered the bitchy bitchy & the absolutely fabulous! Fresh, perfectly packed, and ready on time! Will definitely order takeout again!

The fish quality and taste were pretty mediocre. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, the sashimi set, vegetable tempura, and sex on the beach roll. The vegetable tempura was nice and crispy. But in terms of the fish, everything tasted just ok. Maybe that's why the restaurant specializes in rolls so the sauces add more flavor to the fish. I will probably stick to other sushi restaurants instead.

Tried this place for takeout and unfortunately, it was rather awful both in terms of the quality of the fish, the combination of ingredients and sauces they use in their rolls, and overall taste. Truly surprised because the Yelp reviews are really good and yet what we had was so bad..

What a nice place! I came in on a Saturday evening. Surprisingly it was fairly empty but it didn't affect my experience one bit. This place is nice and can be found tucked in Seal Beach next to the Vons. The staff were super friendly and the dishes came out with some pizzazz and I was here for the show. We tried several dishes but I only captured the prettiest ones. However, everything I ate was delicious and fresh. The cuts of fish were humongous, which I appreciated!

This is our usual sushi local spot! Always look at the specials they have. We make girl dates just to have sushi here. Chef panda is always nice and helps us order. Sit at the bar to get to know the chefs and ask for recommendations. Then from there on you will know what to order next time!

This is one of my favorite places to come & eat sushi! The restaurant itself is very clean + friendly staff! They have a variety of different sushi rolls to choose from including appetizers and drinks. My two favorites are the IDK roll & dragon roll! Definitely 5 stars

My brother-in-law from Missouri was in town for business. He texted "is my office anywhere near your house?". Turns out he was 5 minutes away. I picked him up after work and asked what CA cuisine he wanted. He picked sushi. I was trying to find somewhere cool and this place was near the beach and had great reviews. We walk in the door and a stench punches us in the face. It smelled so bad in here I was instantly embarrassed and whispered to my wife "lets go somewhere else". My brother-in-law said "nah, it just smells like somebody burnt something" so we stayed. Unlike every single other person who walked in the door we were ignored and stood there until somebody realized we weren't leaving and sat us. Our waiter didn't seem interested in serving our table either. Every other customer they yelled out greetings and treated them like stars. This is why I can't give the place 5 stars. Food though was 5 stars all the way. For being from Missouri my brother in law was a sushi pro. He ordered a sashimi bowl. He was very specific on what type of fish he wanted and the waiter kept arguing saying "it's chef's choice" he said "well, this is the choice he's going to make". Again, service was very odd here compared to the treatment other tables were getting. The bowl that arrived was a work of art. Beautiful presentation of different fish. We were all amazed. He loved it. I ordered the happy hour special. The description was you picked three different rolls and got a smaller portion of them, miso soup, salmon skin salad, and a drink. The waiter carries out this gigantic wooden structure and I'm thinking "wow, that must be a family platter". He then sits is down in front of me, it's my happy hour special! Damn! This was HUGE. Three beautiful rolls and all three tasted totally different. Most places these days everything tastes like a CA roll slathered in sauce. These all tasted distinct. The glutton I am I devoured my entire family platter. The salmon skin salad was the best I've had and I'd come back just for that! Other tables were getting these giant wooden staircase looking things that sushi was placed on. Presentations here were works of art. My wife ordered a salmon philly roll, some gyoza, and veggie tempura. She also enjoyed her meal. Besides the initial stench and the really bizarre service we all had a great time and enjoyed our food. I would definitely come back to try more things. The beautiful presentation alone is worth the trip.

Clean and friendly atmosphere. Rolls were a little small but fresh and delicious. Sashimi on point!

No Live Scallops were available, which displeased my daughter and granddaughter--but not me, because they are one of the most expensive items sold here when in stock. The two disappointed diners were comforted somewhat by two Seal Beach Rolls, while I enjoyed a great Spicy Tuna Roll which did not have overwhelming spiciness. Diane was happy with two orders of All Shrimp Tempura, while I dabbled with one order of Assorted Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura that included great-tasting delicate Sweet Potato, Zucchini, Broccoli, Mushroom and Onion Tempura, besides hot and juicy Shrimp Tempura. Miso Soup was good, as well as a small included salad. As to which dressing is tastier between Ginger and Poppyseed Dressing, I still can't make up my mind. So, as usual, I applied each one to half of the salad. For my chosen entree Sukiyaki was fine--just not as hot as usual. And the portion was large enough to give some to my granddaughter and still have enough food remaining at dinner's end for a likeable lunch the next day. I don't feel that asparagus should be anywhere near a sushi roll, but that was my bad. Also ordered their Yuzu cheesecake, which was a no for me. It was too strong and screaming Yuzu simialr to lemon zest and super tiny. The quality of the ingredients they use here are pretty good. I would come back to try other items, but I do not suggest getting their dessert or their long beach roll.

In recent months, I have been ordering entrées from the menu. With this in mind, I am submitting this Yelp. Clam Chowder: The menu lists this soup as "award winning". Staff assured me that they make their own clam chowder (it does not come out of a can). The chowder is very good. The taste stands out from chowders I have had at other restaurants. It has a savoriness, which I assume comes from bacon. Surf & Chips: This entrée has 3pc of white fish and 3pc of shrimp, fried in a tempura type batter. There is a small bowl of sesame slaw, and a lot of shoestring French-fried potatoes. I "feel" that the pieces of fried fish are a bit small. I suspect that the fish is sized to match the size of the fried shrimp for presentation purposes. But at $25, I think the pricing is reasonable in the current environment. Grilled Ribeye & Nate's Fillet: I have ordered both steaks (ribeye and filet mignon) on different occasions. The steaks here are very good for a restaurant which is not steakhouse. Service at the bar has always been good. If the pace of drink orders isn't too brisk, the bartenders are entertaining. They also mix their cocktails well.

What's funny is that we've both lived around Long Beach forever and somehow never fully connected with Oho despite hearing good things about it for years. We had randomly stopped in one afternoon recently thinking we'd just split a roll and head home, but the food ended up being so good that we kept ordering "one more thing" until we accidentally skipped dinner entirely later that night. That experience was good enough that when we found ourselves trying to figure out dinner again yesterday, Oho immediately came back into the conversation. We got there early evening and the timing was perfect. Busy enough to feel lively and like you were out for the night, but not so packed that service slowed down or the room became chaotic. The pacing of the meal was honestly one of the best parts. Dishes came out steadily without crowding the table, and everything felt very natural and relaxed. The tuna crispy rice was fantastic and a little different from the usual presentation. Perfect crisp on the outside, almost caramelized, with really airy spicy tuna on top that reminded me more of a tartare texture than the heavier versions you sometimes get elsewhere. We also had bluefin tuna, toro, salmon sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, and the Extreme Crunch Roll with light eel sauce, which ended up being surprisingly balanced and not over-the-top despite the name. Even the iced green tea stood out. Bright green, almost cloudy, super refreshing, and honestly exactly what I wanted with sushi. Service was excellent both visits. It felt very team-oriented behind the sushi bar and on the floor, which kept everything moving smoothly without feeling rushed. A couple practical notes: parking is easy overall, but the lot is shared with the motel, so just be mindful where you park and try to stay closer toward the restaurant side of the lot. Also, this feels much better suited for couples or small groups than large parties. Four people would be ideal. Six is probably pushing it unless the restaurant is unusually quiet.
