Just had dinner at this place a few weeks ago after my friend received a coupon in the mail. I already can't wait to go back. It's hard to find traditional, quality Japanese food so this place was quite a pleasant surprise. (I live in harbor city and the number of good japanese restaurants are either ridiculously expensive or decreasing in quality)
Everything from their sushi to their cooked appetizers were delicious, fresh, and VERY reasonably priced (check our their happy hour monday through thursday I think) . I can't remember the last time I had fish this fresh, actually. Here were some of our favorites (it seems their strengths are in their "tapas")...
Salmon with Crispy Spinach--
OMG the most tender and delicious salmon ever. Lightly seared I believe and topped with delicious crispy spinach and some amazing citrus soy sauce. Light enough, but still flavorful to be filling. Win.
Garlic Albacore--
Truffle oil in a sushi place??? Why have I never had this before? AMAZING. Garlic was soooo tender and flavorful with a dash a truffle oil. Bold, but not overpowering garlic flavor.
Herb Crusted Tuna salad--
The herbs on this lightly seared tuna were so good. The mixed greens were fresh and dressed with some type of miso dressing (?). Great beginning for a dinner.
Chicken Teriyaki Box--
Perfect portions of chicken teriyaki, tempura and salad. I don't think I've ever had fresh teriyaki sauce like this before. (I think they make the sauce fresh to order) And you know you're in an authentic Japanese place by their tempura, which was perfectly crispy and lightly fried.
Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice--
We ordered this after hearing how good it was. I've had many versions of spicy tuna on rice so I wasn't expecting anything too different, but oh man this might have been my favorite of the night. The flavors are amazing, the spicy tuna soft but not too spicy over pan seared cubes of rice.
Kinme--
Some type of red snapper, which I've never seen or tried. Pleasantly surprised... It was dressed with some amazing sauce and the sushi chefs recommended us to eat it as is. DELICIOUS.
Soft Shell Crab--
Ive never had soft shell crab like this at a restaurant. It was lightly fried and topped with some amazing tomato and caper sauce.. Bold, clean, and delicious.
I must say, their roll selection looked a little sparse compared to other sushi places I've been to. But I don't think this will hurt them because everything else is fantastic. This is not the kind of place you go for a over sauced, over fried roll, BTW!!
Service was great and everyone looked like they were having fun at work, which made eating there better than expected. I wish I lived closer to this place!! Tell them Evan sent you and they will have no idea who you're talking about...... read more
