This tiny ramen shop was such a wonderful experience. I tried it for the first time today and was surprised by how close together every thing was in the dining area. I felt welcomed by the cool tones of the interior design and layout actually. We waited by the door as a party of two. Not too long after we entered were we greeted by the hosted and seated outdoors, as we requested. Even though it is on fourth street which has plenty of street traffic, it was still a quiet, comfortable dining experience. Every thing on the menu looked and sounded amazing but I planned to try the ramen because I've been craving a good bowl of ramen for a while. I landed on the shoyu ramen with tofu. I really enjoyed the taste of the broth. The flavor and seasoning was soul-healing. I don't usually go with plain chicken broth in ramen but I felt confident in my choice. I was literally happy dancing with each bite. The ramen was so good! My partner went with a spicy order of tonkotsu ramen with chicken, garlic, and black oil sauce. I tried parts of it and it was also delicious! I wanted to try the sushi but did not have that big of an appetite for both sushi and ramen so I opted for the salmon poke tacos. They tasted very savory and the salmon was flavored really well. The temperature and consistency was not too overwhelming for the tacos shell. The service was attentive and not too invasive. We took the check to the counter to pay. I am excited for our next trip here. It is dangerously walking distance for us! The calamari was the highlight--nicely cooked, not overly salty, and genuinely enjoyable, although the dipping sauce was just alright. The gyoza wasn't bad overall, but the wrappers were a little too thick, the dipping sauce was forgettable, and it tasted like it may have been frozen. The spicy tonkotsu was pretty good. The spice level worked well, there was a slight hint of miso in the broth, and it was served at the right temperature. The pork belly was a little tough though. The portion reflects the price point. The place has a slightly unusual layout where the staff may not notice you immediately, but once they do, service is fast and friendly. The setup is also perfect if you enjoy sitting by the window and watching the street while you eat. Overall, Jounetsu Ramen doesn't disappoint, but compared to LA's heavy hitters, the ramen still has ways to go. read more

The ramen was delicious the pork belly was good not great. The shrimp were a disappointment. The shrimp looked to haven prepared and frozen in a factory and refried at the restaurant. Service was prompt. The restaurant is small with limited indoor seating as well as a. Patio. Overall I liked the food and felt the value was there. I would return and explore more on the menu. It was a dark and stormy night.... Finally a cold moment to come to probably the best ramen spot in all of Long Beach and enjoy a terrific bowl of spicy miso broth with plenty of noodles, chicken meat and everything else. The spice level was actually perfect. I was also surprised that I didn't feel full after having consumed every single drop. My partner and I enjoyed the gyoza while she partook the crispy shrimp appetizer. The help looked after our needs for water and brought out food swiftly. It's a small place but we got a table pretty fast. They have outdoor seating with heaters pointing in the right spots. Parking was a small challenge but manageable. A big fan of the crispy rice because the rice was both soft and crispy but not a big fan of the pokemon roll. This is a nice Thai owned Japanese restaurant with very friendly service and delicious appetizers and ramen lineup. Parking is tricky as you will have to hunt for a street parking spot hopefully nearby. I was able to snag one right across the street but nearly got mugged and got hit by a car just to get to the entrance. The shrimp appetizer was something worth revisiting just for that. It was THAT good. The ramen was also delicious. The dining space has indoor and outdoor choices. The 2-seater table we got assigned was uncomfortable to sit in. Hardly any elbow rooms and nowhere to put the bag down or even phone / sunglasses. People walks right behind you constantly making it sorta awkward to chomp down on food. What I found really off putting was the wafting of marijuana smoke the entire time we were eating. I guess the dude next to us couldn't give two shits about lighting up a bowl. I hate the stench and so did my dining companion. Appalling to me that the restaurant staff didn't say or do anything about it. Giving it a 3 out of 5 here -- it's a shame the food was otherwise delicious and the service friendly and prompt. I visited this place back in March with some friends, attracted by a limited time discount offered to CSULB students, which we really appreciated as broke college students haha The staff was kind and attentive, and while the restaurant is a bit small, it had a nice, warm, and welcoming atmosphere, especially since it was raining outside. We ordered takoyaki (and also dumplings, that aren't shown because they were really good and ate them before I could get pics lol), a chicken bowl, a pork bowl, and tonkatsu ramen. Such had high hopes for this place bc the rating was good We waited about an hour which was kinda reasonable given the weather and the limited seating inside. My family & I wanted to wait and try their food. When we finally got seated, our server wiped our table once and left. The table was still sticky on one side. I wanted to get chicken with my ramen but the server hit me with the "are u sure? the chicken will take too long" so i was like umm okay i guess i'll do pork. We got our food 30 mins after order and by this time, the place wasnt even busy anymore. There were a couple empty table (people left the line cause the wait was so long). When we got our ramen, the server just put the bowls down & left & didnt specify which two were spicy and which wasnt. Turns out none of them were spicy LOL but we didnt wanna tell them to take it back and wait another half hour so we just asked for chili oil. About the time we were almost done eating, the two guys next to us told the server they never got their appetizers & we realized we also didn't get ours. The server brought our appetizer after we were done eating so we just asked for a box to take it to go. This was my first visit to this spot. It's located on a busy street lined with shops and eateries. The parking is awful there's usually no spots in front and only occasionally on the entire block which is why my daughter and I took an Uber ride over on Sunday in Cali. Crushed garlic was my daughters she loves it in her ramen. Spicy siracha had a nice kick. Chicken Gyoza For me they were nice and flavorful next time I'll get them fried harder overall they were tasty I ate them with spicy siracha and soy sauce but they are best eaten hot. Tempura Shrimp I asked them to be fried extra crispy and they were so good and I used spicy siracha as the dipping sauce. I love Ramen a lot and usually eat vegan when I'm eating dinner with my daughter vegan ramen is healthier and very tasty on my next visit I'll order Tonkatsu grilled pork and grilled quid with lemon on a solo visit. I showed up at the right time because there was a large party outside. I like how open the restaurant is in such a compact space. I ordered the Spicy Tonkotsu with Chashu. The pork belly was fat. TLDR: Difficult parking, unanswered calls, overly salty broth, dry chashu, cold staff. - - - - - - Jounetsu was a recommendation from a friend, but in addition to the difficulty in finding parking, I found it to be a disappointing experience. The only thing to top this is the echo of other reviews of how their phone is more of a decoration than a feature. Do they ever answer their phone? We tried calling in 10-minute intervals a few times, and when we visited in the late afternoon, it wasn't busy. At the time of our visit, the staff that were working there were not too happy when we asked for them to close the patio door as the wind kept blowing right into us. We started off with the Takoyaki and we both ordered their Tonkotsu Ramen. The Takoyaki was okay and expected. The Tonkotsu Ramen took some adapting. Compared to other ramen, this one was grilled and fairly tough to chew. The broth itself was extremely salty. With most ramen, I finish the broth, but for this I really had to leave it. It seemed like there was only one server working and he was very overwhelmed and I got my food before many tables that were sat before me. The spicy tonkotsu orders were backed up so much that there was a 10 minute gap between me finishing my food and my partner receiving his food. They failed to tell us that we were not going to get our appetizers because they "don't have time" and we only found out after asking. The salmon bowl was okay. The regular tonkotsu was served warm and not hot and the pork belly was dry despite being drenched in broth. A friend's birthday party got postponed due to the rain so I decided to try Jounetsu Ramen for lunch. Street parking can be hard to find, so I had to park several blocks away. The restaurant itself is long and skinny, with half of the tables indoors and the other half outdoors. I was able to get one of the indoor tables after a brief wait, but by 1:30PM almost all tables including outdoor ones were taken. Service was friendly but rather slow. I had to wait a considerable amount of time between my salad, mini rice bowl, and ramen. There were only two workers so I felt like they were also a bit overwhelmed. I ordered one of the lunch specials, a combination of tonkotsu ramen plus mini eel rice bowl (comes with mini salad too). The eel was broiled nicely and the rice seasoned with some furikake. Salad was standard. The tonkotsu broth while rich was not as flavorful as I expected after the touted 18-hour stewing time, and the soup was also not hot enough for me. The pork belly was also fatty, but not in the good way (i.e. the fat was grisly and hard to eat). The ramen noodles were just okay, not firm and chewy but also not super overcooked and soft. Another place that had been on my list to try for aeons - finally tried it last Friday for lunch (most of the menu is a dollar or two cheaper for lunch on weekdays than the rest of the time, as indicated by the slashed prices on the menu). Funny enough, I'd passed it by a million times on my way to places further down 4th st - it's a lot smaller than it looks from the outside, with only a single row of a few tables, plus the patio area (though it is fun that the tables inside look right into the kitchen, which takes up the rest of the building.) Ramen prices are currently $15-16 for lunch on weekdays ($16-17 the rest of the time), which unfortunately is pretty reasonable-sounding these days (I had the spicy tonkotsu, my usual ramen order). They also have a combo where for $6-8 more, you can get a mini salad and a half-sized rice bowl - being my first time trying the place, I had to also upgrade and try their unagi, especially after the last time I'd had unagi being rather disappointing. Service was great start to finish, zero complaints there. The salad was just a salad, nothing particularly exciting about it - pretty good dressing, but obviously not the point of the combo. The unagi was *excellent* (definitely worth $8, and almost as large as some nominally full-size unagi bowls I've had other places.) Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned unagi. The ramen was... good. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, and probably as good as any other ramen I've had in Long Beach. Not as good as some ramen I've had in parts of LA with more of a Japanese restaurant focus, though, but solid. Good but not amazing broth, good but not amazing noodles, good but not amazing portions... I will say, though, the *meat* in the ramen was top tier - some ramen places, even extremely good ones, skimp on the pork belly unless you pay extra, with just a couple thin-shaved pieces of pork. Here, you get a solid amount of pretty thick-cut, juicy, meaty pork belly, definitely more than I was expecting. Zero complaints there. (I was going to give them 4 stars, but decided to give them 5 entirely on that basis. It *is* probably where I'd send people at this point if they were looking for ramen in LB - HiroNori has better noodles and slightly more umami-ful broth, but Jounetsu definitely has better - and more - meat, plus you're probably more likely to get a table quicker.) Their special lunch prices also include *extremely* cheap Japanese beer (the usual imports you see at every Japanese place), and $2 off all the sake. I had a $12 nigori (normally $14), which given it was a 375 ml bottle, isn't bad at all (admittedly the same bottle is $6.50 at Total Wine right now, but obviously you're paying for more than just the bottle itself.) p.s. parking sucks, but you know what there's always plenty of parking for? I've driven by this place quite a few times and have always wanted to stop by! Finally, got a chance to when my son and his friends wanted to eat RAMEN before our movie play date 2 weeks ago! Parking was a bit tough but I got lucky parking down the block. The kids wanted to put our name in, while I looked for parking, because it looked super busy, which is a good sign! Anyway, when I got there, we waited less than 10 min, got seated and ordered: - Crispy rice w/ Spicy tuna = so yummy! The kids loved it too! We had relatives that came to town from Houston and happened to see this ramen place on yelp . We've never been there either and wanted to try some place new as we love supporting local restaurants in the LBC. My son made reservations easy for party of 8. Intimate space with Japanese inspired decor. There is out door seating but they were able to accommodate us inside. Since most of us have been to Japan , it reminded us of those ramen places we went to around Tokyo . Service was excellent and food came out timely. Tonkotsu ramen was delicious. The chicken ramen was also very good. We also tried the Pokémon roll since we're collectors . Parking was a little bit of a challenge because it's street parking.
