This tiny ramen shop was such a wonderful experience. I tried it for the first time today and was surprised by how close together every thing was in the dining area. I felt welcomed by the cool tones of the interior design and layout actually. We waited by the door as a party of two. Not too long after we entered were we greeted by the hosted and seated outdoors, as we requested. Even though it is on fourth street which has plenty of street traffic, it was still a quiet, comfortable dining experience. Every thing on the menu looked and sounded amazing but I planned to try the ramen because I've been craving a good bowl of ramen for a while. I landed on the shoyu ramen with tofu. I really enjoyed the taste of the broth. The flavor and seasoning was soul-healing. I don't usually go with plain chicken broth in ramen but I felt confident in my choice. I was literally happy dancing with each bite. The ramen was so good! My partner went with a spicy order of tonkotsu ramen with chicken, garlic, and black oil sauce. I tried parts of it and it was also delicious! I wanted to try the sushi but did not have that big of an appetite for both sushi and ramen so I opted for the salmon poke tacos. They tasted very savory and the salmon was flavored really well. The temperature and consistency was not too overwhelming for the tacos shell. The service was attentive and not too invasive. We took the check to the counter to pay. I am excited for our next trip here. It is dangerously walking distance for us! Extremely disappointing experience from the moment we walked in. We were not greeted, and the woman at the front immediately had a visibly annoyed/disgusted expression and rudely told us there were no seats and that we needed to sit outside. She then said we could wait for an inside table and walked away, so we stayed inside to let her know we would prefer to wait indoors because it was extremely hot outside. When she came back, she asked if we were sitting outside, and when we said we were going to wait for an inside table, she rudely responded, "Then wait outside," and walked away. We hadn't even been seated or ordered yet, and we were already being treated so disrespectfully. We understand that restaurants can be busy, but there is no reason to speak to customers or treat them this way. The way we were treated right when we walked in says a lot about the customer service and overall atmosphere of the establishment. Definitely not the welcoming experience we expected. read more

I've been here a few times for their ramen and appetizers, but the main reason I always come back is for their coco cloud matcha. Unfortunately, today was a huge letdown. We came in specifically to order two coco cloud matchas and requested extra matcha cloud. The cashier/server explicitly agreed to our request. However, when he handed us the drinks, I was in total dismay-the matcha cloud wasn't even at a normal level, let alone extra. It was literally just a splash, leaving us with mostly coconut water. When I politely pointed this out, the employee told me to "just mix it and it'll taste good." When I said I wanted what I paid for and asked for more matcha, he shrugged it off and said they were running out and couldn't do anything. Customer service goes a long way. He could have easily offered a partial refund, explained the shortage before taking our order, or made more. Instead, I paid for a specialty drink that tasted like plain coconut water. Disappointing experience for a place I usually enjoy. It's truly bothering me that if they were running out of ingredients, they should have told us beforehand rather than charging us for a specialty drink and giving us a watered-down version with zero accountability. The calamari was the highlight--nicely cooked, not overly salty, and genuinely enjoyable, although the dipping sauce was just alright. The gyoza wasn't bad overall, but the wrappers were a little too thick, the dipping sauce was forgettable, and it tasted like it may have been frozen. The spicy tonkotsu was pretty good. The spice level worked well, there was a slight hint of miso in the broth, and it was served at the right temperature. The pork belly was a little tough though. The portion reflects the price point. The place has a slightly unusual layout where the staff may not notice you immediately, but once they do, service is fast and friendly. The setup is also perfect if you enjoy sitting by the window and watching the street while you eat. Overall, Jounetsu Ramen doesn't disappoint, but compared to LA's heavy hitters, the ramen still has ways to go. read more

The tonkotsu ramen was good but I prefer a richer broth and it just kind of missed the mark for me. The 99 degree roll was good and worth ordering. Finally a cold moment to come to probably the best ramen spot in all of Long Beach and enjoy a terrific bowl of spicy miso broth with plenty of noodles, chicken meat and everything else. The spice level was actually perfect. I was also surprised that I didn't feel full after having consumed every single drop. My partner and I enjoyed the gyoza while she partook the crispy shrimp appetizer. The help looked after our needs for water and brought out food swiftly. I am a returning customer because my wife and I loved the food and experience the first time. This time I stopped by to only get the coconut matcha drink and before placing the order I had asked for extra matcha. The employee agreed to add extra matcha on top and so I proceeded to order 2 of the coconut matcha instead of just 1 for myself. When I was given the order, there was a thin layer of matcha and I was told that they are running out of matcha. First of all it is only 5:30pm and they close at 9:00pm how can they serve customers just coconut water with a few splashes of matcha .. Secondly, even if that was the case that they are running out of matcha, it should have been brought up to my attention and I would have only ordered 1 for myself. If I wanted coconut water, I would have gone to the store and gotten it for $5 or less and not spend $13 on 2 coconut water drinks. How disappointing. This is a nice Thai owned Japanese restaurant with very friendly service and delicious appetizers and ramen lineup. Parking is tricky as you will have to hunt for a street parking spot hopefully nearby. I was able to snag one right across the street but nearly got mugged and got hit by a car just to get to the entrance. The shrimp appetizer was something worth revisiting just for that. It was THAT good. The ramen was also delicious. The dining space has indoor and outdoor choices. The 2-seater table we got assigned was uncomfortable to sit in. Hardly any elbow rooms and nowhere to put the bag down or even phone / sunglasses. People walks right behind you constantly making it sorta awkward to chomp down on food. What I found really off putting was the wafting of marijuana smoke the entire time we were eating. I guess the dude next to us couldn't give two shits about lighting up a bowl. I hate the stench and so did my dining companion. Appalling to me that the restaurant staff didn't say or do anything about it. Giving it a 3 out of 5 here -- it's a shame the food was otherwise delicious and the service friendly and prompt. This was my first visit to this spot. It's located on a busy street lined with shops and eateries. The parking is awful there's usually no spots in front and only occasionally on the entire block which is why my daughter and I took an Uber ride over on Sunday in Cali. Crushed garlic was my daughters she loves it in her ramen. Spicy siracha had a nice kick. Chicken Gyoza For me they were nice and flavorful next time I'll get them fried harder overall they were tasty I ate them with spicy siracha and soy sauce but they are best eaten hot. Tempura Shrimp I asked them to be fried extra crispy and they were so good and I used spicy siracha as the dipping sauce. I love Ramen a lot and usually eat vegan when I'm eating dinner with my daughter vegan ramen is healthier and very tasty on my next visit I'll order Tonkatsu grilled pork and grilled quid with lemon on a solo visit. TLDR: Difficult parking, unanswered calls, overly salty broth, dry chashu, cold staff. - - - - - - Jounetsu was a recommendation from a friend, but in addition to the difficulty in finding parking, I found it to be a disappointing experience. The only thing to top this is the echo of other reviews of how their phone is more of a decoration than a feature. Do they ever answer their phone? We tried calling in 10-minute intervals a few times, and when we visited in the late afternoon, it wasn't busy. At the time of our visit, the staff that were working there were not too happy when we asked for them to close the patio door as the wind kept blowing right into us. We started off with the Takoyaki and we both ordered their Tonkotsu Ramen. The Takoyaki was okay and expected. The Tonkotsu Ramen took some adapting. Compared to other ramen, this one was grilled and fairly tough to chew. The broth itself was extremely salty. With most ramen, I finish the broth, but for this I really had to leave it. Leaving it (and the restaurant) didn't take too much effort on my part, but eating here was a chore that I wish not repeat. read more

Such had high hopes for this place bc the rating was good We waited about an hour which was kinda reasonable given the weather and the limited seating inside. My family & I wanted to wait and try their food. When we finally got seated, our server wiped our table once and left. The table was still sticky on one side. We ordered 3 ramens in total, 1 tonkotsu & 2 spicy. I wanted to get chicken with my ramen but the server hit me with the "are u sure? the chicken will take too long" so i was like umm okay i guess i'll do pork. We got our food 30 mins after order and by this time, the place wasnt even busy anymore. There were a couple empty table (people left the line cause the wait was so long). When we got our ramen, the server just put the bowls down & left & didnt specify which two were spicy and which wasnt. Turns out none of them were spicy LOL but we didnt wanna tell them to take it back and wait another half hour so we just asked for chili oil. About the time we were almost done eating, the two guys next to us told the server they never got their appetizers & we realized we also didn't get ours. The server brought our appetizer after we were done eating so we just asked for a box to take it to go. A friend's birthday party got postponed due to the rain so I decided to try Jounetsu Ramen for lunch. Street parking can be hard to find, so I had to park several blocks away. The restaurant itself is long and skinny, with half of the tables indoors and the other half outdoors. I was able to get one of the indoor tables after a brief wait, but by 1:30PM almost all tables including outdoor ones were taken. Service was friendly but rather slow. I had to wait a considerable amount of time between my salad, mini rice bowl, and ramen. There were only two workers so I felt like they were also a bit overwhelmed. I ordered one of the lunch specials, a combination of tonkotsu ramen plus mini eel rice bowl (comes with mini salad too). The eel was broiled nicely and the rice seasoned with some furikake. Salad was standard. The tonkotsu broth while rich was not as flavorful as I expected after the touted 18-hour stewing time, and the soup was also not hot enough for me. The pork belly was also fatty, but not in the good way (i.e. the fat was grisly and hard to eat). The ramen noodles were just okay, not firm and chewy but also not super overcooked and soft. Overall, for the price, I left full and food was decent, though not spectacular. Prices were fair so value was good. read more

I've driven by this place quite a few times and have always wanted to stop by! Finally, got a chance to when my son and his friends wanted to eat RAMEN before our movie play date 2 weeks ago! They failed to tell us that we were not going to get our appetizers because they "don't have time" and we only found out after asking. The salmon bowl was okay. The regular tonkotsu was served warm and not hot and the pork belly was dry despite being drenched in broth. I didn't touch them and waited for server to return to send them back. She apologized and took the plate to remake them. Katsu arrived and looked delicious, again disappointed.
