I must say that I truly enjoyed lunch with John in St. Augustine. Sunset Grill's Open seating area was actually pretty packed so we asked to dine inside. It was a lot cooler that than the outside breeze. It was actually rather comfortable. Our server showed up immediately and presented us with the catch of the day. I was only interested in the fish bites since they had rave reviews on here. Hubby wanted the Blackened Fish Sandwich, which I truly believe she said was trout. We placed our orders. We started off with a Frozen Pina Colda. We talked as our order was being prepared. John is a St. Augustine native so everyone knows him. He was able to see a few lifelong friends during our lunch date. Our order came out. It was hot, tasty and well worth the drive over from the shores. My fish bites were juicy as well as tender. I asked them to cook them a little longer. I pulled off the breading and enjoyed each bite. I had enough left to take for dinner. John on the other hand, left nothing on his plate. My husband and I ate here this evening due to its close proximity to our hotel. We checked in at the host stand and were seated. Due to the large groups outside we were hopeful for good food. We ordered drinks where I ordered the Sunset Lemonade ($12) and my husband ordered an old fashioned ($12). The drinks arrived and there was no taste of alcohol at all in my lemonade - I honestly think I paid $12 for a glass of lemonade. My husband's drink arrived in what he called a "fancy Dixie cup" due to the size. I then ordered the fish and chips and my husband ordered the shrimp toast. After 30 minutes of waiting for food, it arrived and nothing was very hot. The fish was ok but definitely not crisp and the wedges were slightly burnt. We witnessed the gentleman next to us sending back his shrimp plate for coldness as well. The service was fast and excellent, the atmosphere clean and fun, and the food was absolutely warm, delicious, cooked to perfection and a great price. Our server (Destinee) was super nice, friendly, helpful, accommodating and made our time there pleasant. -My mother ordered the fish and chips, she states that the fish was cooked perfectly and was a large portion, the potatoes were good and got quite a lot of them. It does come with malt vinegar and coleslaw but my mother opted just for potatoes and fish because she wasn't that hungry. My mother also got an alcoholic cocktail named Sunset Ship Wreck which she described as tasty, refreshing, and had a great amount of alcohol in the glass. -I ordered the Baja Bowl with chicken, it was absolutely mouthwatering. I got a nice big serving and everything in the bowl was fresh and flavorful. The bowl included chicken, rice, corn, salsa, avocado ranch, beans, cheese, tortilla strips, and jalapeños. We were on our way out of town from a wonderful weekend in St. Augustine and decided to go across the Bridge of Lions towards the water for lunch. I read some reviews about their famous coconut shrimp and decided we had to give it a try! The food was good and the coconut shrimp did not disappoint. I also had the caesar salad, which was a good size. My husband had the conch soup and the blackened seafood combo with rice and beans. The soup was definitely our favorite and reminded me of a Manhattan Clam Chowder. We sat in the "lounge" near the bar. The staff is nice and the menu has many options for seafood and non-seafood lovers alike. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. Let me just say that I love having dinner at the bar at Sunset Grille. We've eaten inside the restaurant and it's just not the same for me. I like the noise an excitement at the bar and love watching Angelique and other bartenders do their thing. For appetizers we had a bowl of Minorcan Chowder and a bowl of Minorcan Conch Chowder (both delicious!). My wife then enjoyed an order of Peel 'n Eat Shrimp for her entree while I enjoyed the Fish 'n Chip Dinner. I also enjoyed a few Stella Drafts and my wife had a Classic Vodka Martini that was expertly prepared. During our visit we also had the pleasure of being introduced to Michael who s one of the owners for the past 30+ years. So yummy and fish was done perfectly to fall apart and be moist. The bang bang shrimp were individually so large! But the five star meal is dampened by the dreadful margaritas it was as if the first layer was blended ice and tequila with a layer on top of that of awful sour mix with a horrific aftertaste and on the rim was salt. The Sunset grill is celebrating their 30 year anniversary and it's clear why they have been in business for so long. It was busy but as after a short wait while having a beer at the bar we were seated and immediately greeted by our server. We had the smoked fish appetizer which was great. The owner and his brother the general manager both stopped by and suggested the Datil sauce on the fish dip, which was a citrus pepper sauce that paired perfectly with the dip. Need a good dining experience while in St.Augustine with good food? Then Sunset Grille is your place. The name is deceiving because you will not see the sunset, not even from there second floor seating but it's one of the closest places to the beach. This place has good affordable dining and pretty great service. Service is way better when you sit in the 1st floor dining area (not bar) because tables are closer together and the older crowd typically sits there. Our second night we headed up stairs and it does say have a seat at your own risk. What was a great sunny day turned windy and rainy and because their was 8 of us there was no reseating us for dinner, but we got through it. Just sit wisely!! Onto the food! So many options! Plus their own house favorites. Their Datil sauce is nothing special. It's a sweet red jelly like salsa with a nice big kick. I've had way better sauces but it's not bad by any means. Their food is served to impress with garnish and clippings. The mozzarella sticks appetizer came out on a bed of lettuce and parmesan cheese. They weren't home made and I've had similar ones at a cafe in a hospital I used to work at so nothing special, but an A for effort!! It was the last night so I went big ordering the most expensive thing on the menu, the Lobster Mac n' Cheese. $26 and was it worth it? Not so much, unless you are a big left over person. I say this because it was a lot (see for your self in the pic attached). You also get a side with this, and their fries are addicting! Penne noodles with triple the cheese topped with melted cheddar and seasoned bread crumbs and grilled lobster. It was good! And I'm not one for bread crumbs on my Mac n' cheese but this was good. We waited definitely less than 10 minutes before we were seated. Our server was really attentive and friendly from the beginning! We opted to order the Ahi Tuna App! It was really tasty and flavorful with a nice sear on all sides and a light seasoning. I would have liked to see a tad more seasoning, but the Asian slaw and seaweed salad that came with it made up for it! It also came with an Asian peanut sauce which was okay. I ordered the coconut shrimp entree with a baked potato and coleslaw. The coconut shrimp were huge! It was cooked very well and was still moist and juicy! The outside had such a nice, sweet crunch from the batter combined with the coconut!!! I loved the shrimp! The baked potato was standard with butter and sour cream. The coleslaw was definitely more mayo than cabbage. I took 2 bites and just decided it was way too heavy for me. My friend ordered the blackened seafood combo that came with a catfish filet, scallops, and shrimp. He said he enjoyed it, but was very seasoned and some scallops were overcooked. Thumbs up on new minorcan soup (half England chowder and half conch) Husband ordered steak as usual and came out perfectly well done on spot. Honestly a welldone steak is something a chef/cook couldn't make it right firsthand. Either comes out rare or burnt lol so yes this was unusual experience for him. I ordered the fish grouper with creamy sauce that comes w/clams and little shrimp to it. The sauce could be too bland for others because of the lack of salt but those can easily fix. The right amount of salt and other spices are just what I needed on which I didn't have to add anything. My side dishes tasted crunchy yet juicy as well.
