I ordered the ultimate seafood salad. The menu said chilled lobster, shrimp, crab and crawfish tossed in a creamy lobster roll sauce. What I got was a scoop of bland mush made in a blender with no recognizable pieces of any of the ingredients but shrimp. They took it back and offered me something else. I ordered the chicken wings. They were covered in what they call "Datil Sauce," made with the locally grown Datil pepper. It has the heat index of a habanero, around 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale. But unlike habaneros, datil peppers are sweet, but with a strangely hot, fruitful tangy taste and orange color. They were the worst wings I've ever had in my life. My wife had the clam chowder, which was quite good, and the coconut shrimp, which were greasy and tasteless, served on a bed of plain, cold and unseasoned shredded cabbage. Lastly, the service was not bad but the prices were not the ones listed on their website menu. We come every year to this area but we won't be returning to the Sunset Grill. read more

We live one town over and came up to St. Augustine to surprise my dad for Veteran's Day. They were busy but got our party of 5 seated quickly. We wanted to sit upstairs and enjoy the view but it was closed off. Our waitress was pleasant but busy (short staffed like many places) so coffee did not stay refilled and we never received the bar drink that one in our party ordered. Our food was good and hot. I do have to say, the salad that came with the meal was the best part of the meal. It was fresh and crisp with some mandarin oranges and house dressing. All lacked flavor and freshness. Very disappointing. The tortellini was very light and tasty, however, there was way too much of it. (The shrimp and the scallops got lost). Menu and dishes are in desperate need of an overhaul. We went on a Friday night and there are no reservations so we expected a long wait. There are several different sections to choose and each has a different host to give your name to. We chose the one upstairs and it was only about 15 minutes. There were plenty of places to sit while waiting and you can also get a drink from the bar. The service was great and there were so many items to choose from. Prices were fair and food was excellent with enough to take home. The shrimp & scallop pasta was amazing. Stopped in for appetizer and drinks. Started with coconut shrimp and an old fashion, while eating we were looking through yelp and I saw a picture and asked the waitress about it. She said it's a very popular item so we figured we had to try it something we never had before so we ordered the cup size. OMG if we had of ordered this first we would have got the bowl the second time, this appetizer is out of this world delicious the French fries stay crispy for a while but even when they get soft they taste great. Every bite of potato was perfectly cooked lots of clams NO skimming here. The next time we return it will be to eat here no where else and we will start with the fries with chowder. Decided to try this spot despite the hour long wait. Being a seafood place, I had blackened triggerfish and shrimp. It was a bit over, but otherwise good enough. Wife had spicy shrimp with black beans and rice. Declared it good, but not spicy at all. Our son had tortellini alfredo that he inhaled in about two minutes and demanded seconds. I tried it just before he finished and it was indeed killer. Special kind of Parmesan? I don't know, but it was great. I insisted on key lime pie for dessert. May have been the best I've ever had. Wow. I did not expect this place to be SLAMMING before 6pm on an early weeknight (Monday or Tuesday, I can't remember). We arrived, a party of 5 and they were already packed inside. They did offer us heated seating upstairs, which we accepted though it was quite windy and chilly (not their fault, of course). Our waitress was super fast. Like I just ordered a beer and it was in my hands mere minutes later. Thumbs up for that! 3 of use split a small bowl of the chowder fries. GOOD LORD, this was so delicious. I went out last night for dinner. The place was very busy but we were told 20 minute wait. I went to the bar area and there was an open table. I asked if we can sit there and they said yes it's first come first serve. We ordered clam chowder it was just how I liked it! It was creamy and not watery, but it wasn't even warm. Had great flavor though. Ordered bang bang shrimp it was okay. I like the sauce mixed in with the shrimp. The sauce is just poured over. My Baja fish sandwich blackened was very good! French fries were crispy not my favorite. I had plenty of beer loved that they had local breweries on tap! The key lime pie was very good! The waitress was short and to the point but she was busy. The first dish I ever had here was a shrimp dish with deep-fried grits. I have had it a couple of times and never could recall the name - I don't think it is available. Way more than I could eat a one sitting. Another dish I have had twice is Nina's Shrimp Toast. All the things on that plate should not go together - SHOULD NOT, but THEY DO! Pickled vegetables and spicy honey syrup?! Seriously?! Datil Ranch - why not?! So good! Now, you only get one piece of fish with the fish and chips - but no worries - it is one substantial piece. If you really think you should have two pieces with your order - cut it in half - yeah, that should do it! I'm not a drinker - not so much the booze/buzz aspect - I just can't see me paying for a drink almost the same price as an appetizer or dessert - so as far as rating their bar selections, sorry. Parking should not be an issue most times. They have an on-site parking lot and a lot across the street dedicated to the restaurant, but grab a flag from the holder - here comes one of those idiots in they 4-wheel drive with the front jacked up and rear end dragging the pavement - so they probably won't see you! read more

The ahi tuna tacos tasted fresh and cool (Bc they're cooked to a rare perfection) with a wonderful ginger & wasabi accent. Omg. The rice & beans.. surprisingly really good too! I ordered the shrimp, scallops with penne noodles in a cream sauce. All the different spices made my taste buds dance. The large succulent shrimps and scallops were cooked to perfection. I love coming here whenever we are near St. Augustine beach. The last time we were here we had the lobster mac and cheese and it was so delicious! This time we got the sunset salad with grilled shrimp and the shrimp was very delicious. They were all out of the sweet potato hummus which is supposed to come with the salad but it was still very good. We got some peanut butter pie and key lime pie for dessert which were both really good. The key lime pie was better if I had to choose but overall loved them both. I love how this restaurant is so close to the beach. It has such a nice beach vibe inside and the service is always so nice. Such a GREAT "I just spent a day at St. Augustine Beach and I'd love to have a cold one" kind of place! We had just spent the weekend on the other side of the state and wanted to stop for an early dinner prior to going home. In other words....we wanted to chill before heading to unpack. They definitely hit the spot. Both my husband and I enjoyed the blackened grouper sandwich with crispy French fries. The fish was so tasty, just the right amount of spice! It was moist and flakey and so large the pieces came over both sides of the bun. My husband finished off his meal with a fresh piece of Key Lime Pie---just like one might find in Key West. The views, the beachy vibe, the good service, the delicious food---all reasons we will become regulars! Visited Sunset Grille a few time during my stay in the area and was impressed with each visit. I sat in a different part of the restaurant each time, so I had a different staff help me each time. I had food ranging from the Baja salad to fried shrimp. The orders always came out quick and the quality of the food was great. I happen to be served by a crew of young men on all of my visits and they were all friendly and attentive. I personally came back for a great key lime martini - just how I like it - smooth, not too sweet, not too vodka taste and not too strong to knock you down. We were seated on the second floor open area and we did enjoy it at the fullest with a nice sunset going on. If the night is a cold one, I highly recommend crab and artichoke bisque which will soothe your stomach a lot, but be aware it will also fill you up a lot. Coconut shrimp is a highly recommended as an appetizer also. Good crust, smooth coconut flavor without any grease on the shrimp. Macadamia Mahi-mahi is to die for. However, when we arrived, we were seated quickly in the bar area right next to a big open window, with a nice breeze. It was quite lovely. The food was really pretty good. Husband had the fish bites (mahi, grouper and snapper) and was pleased. Kid had the cheeseburger kids meal. It was way too big for her but she enjoyed half of it. I had the Sea BLT; a BLT with catfish. It was tasty! But the catfish filet is super huge! Like, a third of it would've been more than enough. But it was a good sandwich! Our hotel was right down the street so it was a convenient place to stop in. It's about as "beach front" as you can get in the area, not being truly ON the beach, just FYI.
