While burning some time waiting for my flight, I found myself walking around golden gate park and remembered how much my girlfriend likes egg tarts. Im not too much into sweets as most are too sweet for me but she urged me to try one. The egg tarts are $1.30 or so which I thought was very cheap compared to the size of the tart so I got 2. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up eating both! They weren't too sweet and had a nice consistency with the crunchy outside and soft inside. I would definitely stop by again when I come back to San Francisco! read more

I ordered a mixed fruit sheet cake for my son's baptism. Ordering was a breeze and the cake was ready for pickup at the specified day and time. The cake was perfectly moist and light. The frosting was the perfect amount of sweetness and complimented the flavor of the fruits very well. The only issue we had was the front of the cake getting a little messed up because of how flimsy the box was. If you're getting a large cake I'd suggest bringing something a little sturdier so the box doesn't bend during transport. read more

Felt like an old school Chinese bakery that's cash-only and is cheap! I think it's a bit cheaper than bakeries in NYC Chinatown. I bought the egg tart for $1.25 and it was pretty good! Kudos to my friend who suggested hitting them up before heading to the Golden Gate Park. read more

Great spot! Love the bbq pork buns and their cake. Price is reasonable too. Always looking forward to a trip to sunset bakery.

Ordered a half sheet of their Fresh Strawberry with Whipped Cream Icing Cake for a family friend's 93rd birthday. So yummy delicious, not too sweet, and great value! Still as good as I remember it when I used to order their cakes whenever we had birthday parties for the kids 30+ years ago! Sunset Bakery has been around a long time and still great! Nothing fancy. Love this bakery! read more

Lightest sponge cake with fresh strawberries! The bday nephew & whole family loved it!

This is literally the best cake in San Francisco. Everything including buns and bao is exceptional too. But the classic cakes are absolutely delicious. Light. Not too sweet. Fluffy. Frosting is whip cream like, an absolute treat. Every holiday cake is always from here. My absolute favorite. read more

Sunset Bakery is the first place I recommend when someone needs an affordable - delicious cake. It's neighborhood institution in every sense - and it has never let me down. I'm partial to their strawberry cake - which is lovely. It's made with fresh creme, sponge cake - and it literally melts in your mouth. I'm such a big fan of this spot - that I asked them to make my wedding cake a couple of years back. I picked out the size and cake design that I wanted - and then I picked it up - the day of my wedding. It all worked out perfectly (I even added some additional color to the cake - by placing fresh flowers on it). Support an amazing hard working local bakery and be sure to check out the delightful cakes and pastries at this small spot. Trust. read more

I was contemplating buying a cake, but this whole custard pie for $11 is such a steal! The crust was the perfect texture, and the flavor of the egg custard was really good. It wasn't overly sweet! The person in the front desk was also very friendly, and she even recommended me this pie too. I look forward to trying their cakes and other pastries! Everything here seems really well-priced. read more

I picked up a cake at sunset bakery May 10th. I called in the morning to pick up a cake at 3. The lady named Diane was super sweet! She totally scolded me for buying a mother's day cake the day after Mother's Day, but she was so nice and gave me two free breads. Maybe she felt bad for me. Ahaha. Anyway, please support this business! The cake was light and not too sweet (the best asian compliment for any dessert). Everything tasted fresh. I'm also eating leftover cake as I'm typing this. I will definitely be back for more! read more

Growing up I'd always come to this bakery. Unfortunately, it's not as good as it used to be but if I'm in the area and in the mood for some baos, I know I can stop by for something reliable. The baos are pretty cheap; I got 5 baos for a little over $8. The bread they use for all their baos are sweet. My favorite is the cocktail bun. It's a typical Chinese bakery so it will carry the things you'd expect. Not sure if they take card so bring cash just in case. read more

So I waited in line at Golden Gate Bakery for 20 min to get to the door only to see they don't have egg tarts that day. UGH! And every other pastry was a moon cake (it was Mid-Autumn Festival time). My friend tells me we should go to his favorite bakery. I don't want to drive all the way to The Sunset (where he used to live for quite some time) but I say ok anyway. Great decision! There are a large variety of pastries and buns at this small bakery. The prices here are super reasonable as well. Each egg custard was $1 and the were quite tasty. Super creamy with a crispy flaky shell. I even ate one the next day and it was still really good. I do have to give a shout out to the wintermelon cake (sweetheart/wife cake). Probably the best bite out of all the things I bought. The girl behind the counter was really patient with me and I appreciate that. I was trying to get as much as I could knowing I would have to fly with it. Be aware they only take cash. read more

Nice neighborhood Asian bakery that has been around forever. We got 1. Cream puff: Choux pastry filled with dairy cream. Rich in taste while light and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. 2. Wife pastry: An improved version of the traditional. The filling consists of candied wax gourd, sesame, and coconut, and the pastry is light and flaky! I like the traditional one, but I can have twice as many of this. 3. Pineapple bun with red beans paste: Flaky 'pineapple top' over the classic bun with red beans paste filling that isn't too sweet. 4. Milk tea: Silky and fragrant. Perfect to go with the pastries above! I really like that everything from this bakery isn't too sweet... Except the very friendly lady owner. :) Recommend! read more

Been going here for over a decade now. Still support them every time I come to SF! Their cocktail bun, bbq pork bun and egg tart is .

I've been coming here since the 90's and they have the best baked pork bao in my opinion. I've tried other places but nothing compares. Their cocktail buns are huge and heavenly. The slices of cake are so light and made with the freshest fruit. One piece of advice, call ahead in the morning to order your pork bao or whatever you're getting. They're right on the 43, 44 and N-Judah Muni lines. The first time I went later in the day I did get a lecture about coming so late and expecting bao. It was at that time that I was told to order in the morning. Best. Advice. Ever! Unfortunately, I use a walker or cane now so I have to wait for my sisters to come into town. The ladies at Sunset are so sweet helping me, insisting I sit at a table while I wait for my sister and even offering to carry my goodies to her car. Parking is really bad but there are spots if you're willing to circle the block or walk a bit once you find parking. The best thing is to come with someone so that they can circle the block while you run into the bakery! read more

This is the hidden gem you were all looking for. I've been coming here for 5+ years for their strawberry whipped cream cake. $25 for an 8-inch cake that is always immediately devoured in one day. The sponge cake is light, fluffy, and bouncy. The whipped cream is airy, and never too heavy. The strawberries are always fresh, no matter what season you order it! The sponge cake literally melts in your melt... it's so divine. Thank you Sunset Bakery for making every birthday celebration that much more special. It's our household favorite! read more

Very friendly proprietor was patient with me as I asked questions. The chicken pie $1.20 had a nice flaky crust and very substantial pieces of chicken. The crust is a bit sweet, which was a bit weird. Sheng Kee sells a $1.80 chicken pie with a better full puff crust but substantially less filling. I wish I could combine this filling with Sheng Kee's crust. The beef curry horn $1.50 also had a flaky crust and was filled with delicious curry beef. Sheng Kee's is also $1.50 and is substantially smaller. Again I wish I had have Sheng Kee's crust with this filling. Rounded it out with an adorable mini mocha roll, $1 I prefer the pastry at Sheng Kee, which is a full puff pastry rather than the rough puff pastry here. But the portions at Sunset are much larger, the fillings more substantial, and the price is much lower! read more

I ordered an 8 inch mixed fruit cake for my dad's birthday. I added mango to the cake so the cake came to a total of $32, which is still cheap compared to most other places. MIXED FRUIT CAKE ($32 w/ added mango): 3.5/5 The cake layers were light, moist, and not too sweet. What's best about the cakes here is that they don't overdo it on the cream. The cream and fruit layer was filled with fruit (pineapple, tangerine, peach, mango, and strawberry). The cakes are so light here that you can eat multiple slices without feeling guilty. However, I must say that my family and I were extremely disappointed to taste that they used canned fruits (pineapple, tangerine, peach) and only the mangoes and strawberries were fresh. Also, I paid extra money to add mangoes to the cake but there were barely any mangoes?? EGG TART ($1.20): 4/5 Not sure what kind of black magic the lady has but she somehow convinced me to buy some fresh out of the oven egg tarts. They were actually really good- flaky crust with melt in the mouth filling. I noticed that the filling separated from the crust which I actually had never seen any egg tarts do before. Filling was a bit sweeter than I would have liked but delicious nonetheless. Price is great too; I've seen egg tarts go for more than $2 now. read more

Take-Out during Shelter In Place Overall: 7.5/10 Strawberry Cake: 7.5/10 I personally don't like this type of cake (sponge with cream- chinese style) too much. However I was dying for a piece of cake and the staff said the strawberry cake is their best seller so I decided to gave it a try. I am happy for the decision as the cake tasted pretty good, mainly because they used a good quality cream unlike the others. The cake had the good amount of sweetness unlike the American desserts. Yummy delicious light cakes! We always get our cakes here because the strawberry cream cake is so light and fluffy; also it's such a good deal!
