Everything about this bakery is perfect! Their birthday cakes are always so delicious and beautifully decorated without doing too much. Their birthday cakes have the right amount of sweetness and fruits. Come here early because they sell out quick too! I also tried their pineapple bun and it was so crispy and warm. Their cake is gonna be my go to spot next time! My mom usually doesn't like very sweet cakes and she enjoyed it. Definitely would recommend their cakes to everyone that don't like too much sugar.
Ordered this cake and specifically asked for chocolate shaving, I was charged for it but wasn't given even after repeating it 3 times. It's cash only and a language barrier at times. But otherwise the cake was good it was just missing what I specifically asked for. So I would recommend keeping things simple.
Great pastries, and the cake is delicious without being overly sweet. Everything tastes fresh. You can beat the price as well!
I ordered a strawberry cake at Sunset Bakery over the phone for pick up a couple days later. The process was smooth for ordering as I already saw the menu online and the worker wrote down and repeated the message on the cake. The day I came to pick up, the bakery was fairly empty so I didn't have any wait. The worker or owner was so nice and showed me the cake, let me take a pic, boxed it up, and took payment. The process was quick and simple. The cake itself was light, fluffy, and delicious. The only thing negative was that the strawberries were not sweet, but then again, I ordered in late January, early February. Maybe the strawberries might be better during peak strawberry season? The cream was light and tasted well with the cake. Sunset Bakery also sells Chinese pastries and coffee. Nice hole-in-the-wall Chinese bakery that has been around for decades.
Delicious asian cake. Not overly sweet like American cakes. Ordered the mixed fruit 24 hours before and pick up was super easy. Would buy from here again!
This is one of go to places when I'm craving bbq pork buns. Today I dropped in around 9:15am to buy 1/2 dozen. The buns were still warm when I got home. Later I had one for lunch. I bit into the bun. Where's the meat? I had to take several bites to get to the pork. Somewhat on the less generous side. It's not going to prevent me from patronizing the bakery as I'm hoping this was a fluke today. I found metered parking around the corner.
Stopped by for my morning breakfast. Ate halfway through and noticed a cockroach in my bun . Other half tasted good though.
$31 dollars for an 8in Asian fruit cake. Cash only. Classic pink box tied with plastic red string. No frills. The egg sponge is SO soft. The airy cream isn't very sweet! Worker tossed in a free pineapple bread so my kid can eat it on the way home. What a great neighborhood business. Would definitely be back! Plus they are open till 630pm! Walking in this place looks nostalgia of the Asian bakeries in the 80s. Love it.
Solid Chinese bakery featuring cakes (light whipping cream), baos , tarts, coffee, cookies, bengs, quoks, pies, etc.... Quick, polite service. Their Baked Pork Buns are adequate however I loved their past version which had less sauce, more meat, diced onions, and puffier bread.
I think I got the wrong thing... bbq pork bun had a nice filling but the bread was kinda bland and not as soft as I would have liked. they only take cash

best egg tart! everything they sell here is so good, strawberry shortcake airy and fluffy, stuffed sticky rice so flavorful and packed with goodies. baked bbq pork bun, elephant ears, angel cake are my go-to as well. if you want to try one item from here, get the egg tart! read more

I had their strawberry cake a few months ago and really like it. It was fluffy, moist, and not very sweet...which is why I picked up a full 9 inch cake today to celebrate a belated Thanksgiving with family. I also tried the mocha roll previously but was not really impressed with it. Definitely recommend the strawberry cake though. The strawberries were fresh. In the bakery, you can see boxes of strawberries on the fridge. They are CASH ONLY. Their most popular baked good is the BBQ pork buns. I will try that next time. read more

We've been coming to this bakery for a long time now and they have been pretty consistent! Fruit is fresh and cake is always soft. Never any issues when I order and people working there are nice. Our cake turned out just as we requested! read more
I have been treated to dessert from Sunset Bakery twice. I also have bought food there maybe a half dozen times in the past dozen years. So I have a sense of the place. Here is praise: every time we eat their goods, my wife remarks they are good, and we ought to patronize them more than we do. She lives up the street. (I live in New York City. I'm dedicated to my marriage and my job. I fly lots. All good.) So she drives past Sunset Bakery probably every single day, maybe more than once. That means, relatively, we have not partaken much of their offerings. The last time was this past weekend. A guest at a dinner party we hosted at our home brought a custard pie. It was excellent. It was as good the next day, and I had saved a little piece as a treat, and my wife ate it, remarking I was stupid to have left that remnant, taking up space in the frig. Likewise, another time, a couple brought multiple purchases for a different evening. My wife commented that they were all tasty, and it was memorable enough that on this more recent occasion she pointed out to me that Sunset seems reliable. They make Chinese dim sum and Chinese American items. Those are fine. This is a hole in the wall take out joint. By that standard, it is excellent. read more

Neighborhood gem! The strawberry cream cake is delicious. I've gotten it on several birthday occasions and it's always a hit. The price is great and they've always had it in stock when I've ordered. Note, you have to pay in cash so it may require an ATM withdrawal. read more

*~CASH ONLY~* I grew up on this neighborhood but this is my first time stopping by here. I took a morning stroll with my son to get some quick bites to eat for breakfast and to snack on throughout the day. My favorites have always been cocktail buns from Chinese bakeries like these. They didn't have them on display but she showed me the menu. I also ordered ham and egg buns and a chocolate chip cookie for my baby boy. The cocktail buns did not disappoint! They weren't too sweet like some I've had before. The bread and filling ratio was good and the bread was soft, fluffy, and fresh! The price is good enough to get extra to share. The ham and egg buns were good. We ate it at my house so I added some mayo. lol! Also cheese would be good but these are great to pack for a day out at Golden Gate Park. The lady working there was warm and welcoming and had a big smile to her face. She was very friendly and helpful. The prices here were fair and made me order more to eat for later. The inside of the bakery is small with a couple places to sit but since it's next to the bus stop it's a perfect place to grab and go. This place is awesome and if you come early enough you can find free street parking quite easily. Great pit stop to go to before taking a stroll to the park or to grab a quick bite for breakfast or lunch. read more
This is my go to spot for getting pork buns. They have been around forever and are a staple in the Sunset area. They make great cakes to but I go their for the pork buns and custard tarts to. If you are in the area check it out. You won't be disappointed. read more

A great way to load up on snacks for Golden Gate Park. Very reasonable price and no crazy lines, unlike Arizmendi a block way. Only disappointment is that they were out of custard slices, despite clearly having whole large custard pies. BBQ Pork Bun: Pretty much what I'd expect from a pork bun. Warm from the bread warmer. Lots of firm bits of pork, with no gristle or chewy fat. A nice sticky marinade to give moisture to the bun. Golden soft. Chicken Bun: The filling tasted a bit like chicken pot pie, with a strong dose of black pepper and white pepper. Was a novel experience and I really liked the flavors, but the filling was a bit scant. Like after eating half the bun whilst trying to keep my bread bites moist, there was no filling left for the rest of the bread. Ham & Egg Bun: A bun cut open with a slice of ham and a slice of steamed (I think?) egg. Was pretty darn hearty for the price. Only way it could have been better would be with a little cheese slice. read more

I didn't preorder a cake this year and just bought one from their fridge. I got their 6" mixed fruit cake and customize the happy birthday message in blue. Their cakes are always very delicious! The sponge is light and airy. The whipped cream isn't that sweet compared to american cakes. This bakery has been my to-go for the past couple of years. The reason for 4/5 stars is because the cake could've used more fruits inside. The lady at the counter did mention that if you preordered a cake, you can request for any fruits. read more

Baked goods are amazing and so is there hk milk tea. Needed a custom cake and they ended up doing a jelly cat cake for me. It wasn't egregiously expensive for the custom cake. Maybe because it looked simple. Still they did it for me for the wife's 40th birthday. Have a look at the picture! read more

If you are having your wedding in the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend getting your wedding cake from sunset bakery. They are the most reasonable wedding cake spot around and do very beautiful and professional designs and can do multiple tiers for big parties. They are also able to deliver to your event. We got the vanilla strawberry cake which was light and perfect for our wedding. Just note payment is in cash only. read more

love their fluffy pillow soft cake. placed an order for same day pick up. Got the strawberry cake for a friend's birthday. we are night shift nurses and no one should work on their birthday especially night shift so I got this for him as a treat and a way we can celebrate it during our work shift. All the nurses were loving the cake and asking where I got it. Asian cake is the best, not overly sweet and heavy. It is light so can eat lots of slices. I got the 9 inch cake. The lady there is so nice, she hooked me up with loads of pastries and buns. so generous and sweet of her. I also bought a small mocha roll to try. Same light fluffy cake and not too sweet which is how I like my pastries and cake. This place was recommended by two of my friends. cash only. 9 inch was $36. parking is fairly decent to find on a weekday. I got nonmetered parking in front of bakery! read more

Best old school Chinese Sponge Birthday Cake!! It was my grandpa's 90 years old birthday, so wanted to get something traditional/classic to celebrate. Sunset Bakery was the first cake place that came to mind! Called in to make a cake order the day before pick up. CASH Only - the 8 inch strawberry cake was $31, very good price considering the quality! I went to pick up around 4:30pm, slightly earlier than the time I told her that I would pick up the cake. Pick up was smooth, and the lady was very nice. Asked me what I want the writing for the cake before handing me the cake. She also gave me two warm buns, very soft texture (one was creamy corn and another was scallion). That was so sweet of her!! **Parking wasn't easy nearby though** the only inconvenient point, and many bus stops around. Fresh strawberries and nice airy fluffy sponge cake! Cream was smooth and more on the sweet side. After all these years (I haven't ordered cake from there in many years since I don't live in the area), I would still say Sunset Bakery offers the best birthday sponge cake! Simple yet satisfying!! I used to come here in the in my younger years all the time for their buns and strawberry cake. Now I stopped back here for nostalgia reason and bought a $1.50 egg tart and they definitely changed the recipe on it. The custard is now more orange yellow and the crust is lighter and crispier trying to compete with what the new public taste buds are going after. It made me think of the old days with happy memories and how the egg tart used to be yellow with the crust still on the doughy and thicker side before. This new egg tart I do must say is a good improvement. Now I want to go to my other bakery that makes Macau egg tart because the crust reminds me of it. LoL oh yeah I will be eating double egg tarts this day! Today had a nice young girl to wait on me to ask what I wanted and help me with my order. I am not sure if this happens daily, but it was nice. No seating is available indoors or outdoors. Their staff were still wearing masks despite the mandate being lifted, but I did not see hand sanitizer. If you're looking to purchase a cake for a party, this is the place! The lady who works behind the counter is so incredibly sweet! She didn't try to upsell me and was very honest. She told me to get the smaller size for a party of 40. Placing an order was very easy. Keep in mind that they are CASH ONLY! On our scheduled pick up day, they were very flexible with the time. Once I arrived, the cake was ready. The box is a bit flimsy, so be careful! The cake was so fluffy and delicious! I would love to try the strawberry one next time. read more
I always love to try new places as you can see my reviews and most of the time I choose a place based on their reviews. Since this place had very good reviews I went there on Wednesday evening around 5 pm . I understand since it was very close to their closing there was not much items left . I ordered a mocha roll . They do not accept card at all . I didn't know and there are so many items hanging on the walls . When you go there as a customer you look at the foods not the walls . When I wanted to pay , I gave my card to the young woman working there behind the counter. And she said oh cash only with a kind of attitude in her face . How am I supposed to know ? Any ways I am glad I had cash with me . The roll was the worst. Very dry inside and outside . No taste just taste like dry sweet spiked bread . After I had only 2 small bites , I throw it away. I ordered a Mango Cake for my dad's birthday and the cake is super light and fluffy! I love a light and fluffy cake. It could have been better if there was less cream and more mango. I usually do not eat the cream just because its too sweet, but the cream was very light and not too sweet which is what I like. The lady behind the counter was super sweet and nice. I went to pick up the cake near closing time and she gave me two free buns probably because they were closing and needed to get rid of it. read more
