Their Chinese pastries and breads are one of the best in the city. I always get strawberry shortcake slices because they not only taste good, but they look like they're straight from an anime (heehee). I love their cakes because it's the asian type, not too sweet but sweet enough. I appreciate how they use whip cream instead of frosting. Their sponge cake is like the fluffiest and bounciest pillow ever. My boyfriend's mom loved their cake for her birthday. We ordered a small 8" inch strawberry cake For her birthday. It came up to $23 no tax. You gotta be quick because they sell out and they don't make anymore for the rest of the day. I hate to write this review because we have frequented Sunset Bakery for decades. My parents have been such loyal regulars that the staff knew their order when they walked in the door (usually one or two dozen of their awesome baked baos, cocktail buns, or occasionally a strawberry cake). However, there has apparently been a change in ownership, and this is what my mom got yesterday upon getting home with her order of mini baos. She cut one in half and then proceeded to cut the rest of the buns in half after her shock at discovering how little meat filling was inside. She then brought the box back to Sunset Bakery to inquire if she had possibly gotten a bad batch and to show them what she received, and unfortunately was made to feel like SHE was at fault for not knowing that "this is how we make them"--they even went as far as to try and say it's not possible for them to put any more filling in because they would be unable to close buns. I'm sorry, but if you look at the picture, there is no way this excuse holds any water. I honestly thought that someone scooped out and removed all the filling. She attempted to try and explain how long we've been customers and have NEVER gotten buns like this. The person behind the counter remained insistent, became rude, and told her to go to get her baos elsewhere. Please don't worry because from this point forward, we plan to. Most of our friends and family have been coming here for years as well, but are not likely to after hearing about this. This could have been a very different review if they had handled the situation differently. Definitely miss the old management and staff, and sadly will not be coming here any more. read more

I ordered a two-tier red cake for my mom's 79th birthday and was extremely disappointed when I got a flesh salmon color cake instead. The woman who took my order said it wouldn't be a problem making a red cake and that they always make wedding cakes. I even texted her the photo on the left to confirm the red color I wanted. I was then disappointed when I asked for an open box to put the cake in because my trunk needed a little TLC, nope, not possible.... "because the cake will slide around in a box." I've ordered two-tier cakes from other bakeries and have never had that happen. As for taste, I ordered a mixed-fruit cake, there was hardly any mixed fruit in it. read more

So I have been debating whether or not I should leave a comment. My review is solely because I am mourning for my childhood, and should not detour people from trying this bakery. OK so here goes, I literally grew up on these baked goods. This was one of my family's go to bakery back in the days from their curry beef Pastries to their sponge cakes were all exceptional. I also remember as a kid I couldn't wait for my birthday to come around because that meant I get to have their fresh strawberry cake! Their cake was the best thing I have ever tasted it made me so happy! Their quality kept up for a good while, and like every kid I grew up. Fast forward to recent yrs... I went back to this bakery maybe a year ago for the first time in idk 25 yrs? Cuz I was pmsing and it was close to my birthday, and I said to myself "sure why not!" and bought a whole cake to myself (don't judge). Obviously I was over the moon cuz I for real could eat this whole cake by myself if I wanted to, no one could stop me! However, when I ate a slice my joy turned into disappointment quicker than my mom could grab a feather duster to hit me with. It didn't taste the same I thought to myself maybe it was me or maybe it was this one off chance? I didn't go back again until this past weekend. My girlfriend and I wanted cake and shes been wanting chasiu baos... So I'm like okay win win! Cuz she has never had the strawberry cake and I'll get her some baos and some other Pastries for brownie points. *side note* I called the bakery to make sure they still had strawberry cake, and the woman on the phone literally made me reserved the cake when I literally just asked if they had the cake and told her I am on my way. Drove across the city to pick up the goods. Again so excited when I got to my girlfriends place said to myself it's gonna be good its gotta be good. Took a bite and instantly I knew that my favorite cake is gone forever. It is confirmed that the recipe has changed or maybe they used different ingredients. The original strawberry cake's (and I'm assuming their cakes) cream use to be very very light and airy taste very much homemade. The sponge cake itself use to be slightly airier. Now the cakes' cream is alil heavy initially said it tasted like it was factory made cream. It also gives a weird after feeling like there's a film on the roof of your mouth. My girlfriend liked the fact that it wasn't heavy and too sugary, but nothing special. I brought the cake home and my parents didn't like it they said the chef changed. If you have gotten this far in my review thank you. My last take on this bakery is yes, their quality have changed and I probably won't go back. But if this is your first time and since you don't have a comparison you might like it their products aren't bad, pretty standard, and if you plan on calling them be prepared to being bamboozled into placing a hold on a cake. read more

Maybe the good reviews are for the items they sold out of that we couldn't try. But 2/3 things we ordered came out pretty disgusting. We were walking around Golden Gate Park all day, starving, and craving sweets when we walked by this little bakery. Our favorite Asian bakeries nearby were closed, so we strolled in. The entire bakery smelled like cigarettes but no one was smoking outside the entrance. It had to be coming from the back kitchen. No bueno. What if I was pregnant? Food babies don't count, I know, but come on. Not to mention it's highly unappetizing as a bakery should smell like freshly baked goods. STRIKE 1. Nothing really stood out and they were sold out of egg custards and a few other things we wanted. Well we were inside and the lady looked eager to take our order, so we bought 3 mini cakes with yellow and red colored jelly on top (the kind Chinese bakeries often use to write on birthday cakes), 4 pineapple buns with red bean inside, and an eclair. The lady charged us a little bit more than what we totaled up, but oh well. Against the principle, but oh well. Not going to argue over that. Still though - STRIKE 2. They take cash only. We paid and she handed us our goodie box and as we left, realized she didn't hand us the other half. I ran back in and asked for it, and she hurriedly retrieved it and told us NEXT time we come, she'll give us extra. STRIKE 3 Let me tell you why we're never coming back... First off, the mini cakes tasted nothing like we expected. Colored jelly/frosting is always artificial but should be very tasty, right? Not here. The jelly had gone bad or they used too much chemical coloring and no other flavoring. The red jelly had zero flavor. Bland, fine. That sucks, but not as much as the yellow one sucked. It had a bitter, plastic-like aftertaste that was bad enough that I spat it out immediately. It's probably that same infamous yellow 5 in Mountain Dew that kills your sperm. Or something worse that kills your liver. DO NOT ORDER ANY CAKE WITH JELLY IN IT. STRIKE 4. The cake inside and white cream on top was very plain and lacked that light fluffiness you expect from Chinese cakes. No flavor, too. Perhaps if that had more flavor it would mask the nasty jelly flavor, but nope. The eclair had a very weird after taste, and I'll tell you how bad it was now. 1. As soon as we picked it up the chocolate on top completely flaked off. Weird. 2. The cream inside had an odd aftertaste, like they used a bunch of fillers. The main ingredient in custard is egg yolk. That's what makes it rich, creamy, and yellow. 3. That weird bitterness we tasted in that yellow jelly returned. DAMN IT STOP USING THAT NASTY YELLOW #5. 4. The baked outer portion tasted like it sat in a fridge for days. Safeway eclairs taste 10x better... STRIKE 5. As for the 4 red bean pineapple buns, they were pretty standard, didn't taste old or stale like the other items but could have had a lot more sweet crumbles on top, and more red bean inside. 3/5. Overall 2/5 not coming back. read more

Its getting harder to find freshly made baked goods of high quality. I tried this place because I saw their large selection of buns. I bought a couple different ones to test the waters. They were all great but my favorite has to be the BBQ Pork. It's really good. Beyond their bun offerings are traditional cookies, cakes and pies. I picked up a slice of the strawberry cake and of the more classic sheet cake. Both were light and very tasty. The service was good. The place is a little cramped and really for takeout and pre-orders although they do sell coffee as well. I can see grabbing a few items and heading over to Ocean Beach or Golden Gate Park to take in the scenery. I now make a mental note to pick up something when in the area. read more

Since I live in the area and went to the school in the area, a lot of my friends and family know about this place. American Cakes are very hearty and they can be good sometimes, but the way these Chinese Bakers make the cake are down right amazing! I'm turning 21 next month, and i'm truly excited to order my birthday cake her once again. =] I'm planning on ordering three sheets of different sizes and have a 3 tier cake! I'm a native of San Francisco, and and each one of my family members and I used to get our fruit decorated birthday cakes here ever since I was a kid. Now as an adult, I still come here every once in a while to get their buns and cakes because the cakes are light and fluffy, and the buns are always served to me warm if I get there early enough. Also I feel that their pastries are 100 times better and fresher than any Chinese bakery in San Francisco's Chinatown. read more

When in need of last minute desserts and you don't want something overly sweet, this is the place to come grab a chinese-sponge cake with fruit or warm, fresh and ginormous cocktail buns. They have never disappointed with last minute birthday cakes and best of all, the frosting is whipped cream. Not that sugary buttercream stuff. The prices for a last minute to go cake is 30-40 dollars depending on size ($30 for at least an 8-inch round). And the staff is really wonderful. Only drawback is its cash only. read more

Got our wedding cake here 22 years ago! Over 100 guests went crazy for the strawberry cake. They came before the ceremony and did the assembly. They were like ghosts in no one's way! Highly recommend. Parking is a disaster so when picking up baked goods bring someone who can run in while you circle the block. Literally have been going here for over 25 tears. Their cakes are tradition in our family (immediate & extended) for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and special occasions. First time here, ordered a strawberry cream cake for Mother's birthday. It was good, but the ratio of cream to cake was a little too high. There should definitely be less whipped cream (frosting and filling) and more cake or even custard filling if they'd consider subbing custard for the filling. Overall though the sponge cake was fresh and fluffy, the berries fresh if rather firm and tart (can't blame the shop for the unseasonal fruit though), and the decoration appropriate. I will return for either the mixed fruit cake or the mocha cake and ask about custard filling option. read more

Definitely one of my favorite Chinese bakeries in the neighborhood! Lots of cheap, fresh buns, cakes and other baked goods. Great friendly service. Bilingual staff. Most baked goods are around $1 or under. If you don't see something on display, just ask -- what you're looking for may be currently baking or staying warm in the ovens. There's a few chairs and tables inside, but mostly people take their goods to-go. My favorite item by far is their green onion bun -- always comes to me fresh, warm, and moist. Their version consists of little bits of meat, is in a twisted form, and isn't super oily/greasy like those from other bakeries. We used Sunset bakery for our wedding cake. We went to the bakery in person not knowing what to expect and it surpassed expectations. The prices were very affordable compared to other wedding cake providers, and there was a catalogue of options we were able to choose from to pick our perfect cake. We ended up going with a 3 tiered cake, with strawberry and buttercream frosting. The cake was a big hit with our guests, lots of compliments on having a wedding cake that actually tastes good! Note: the bakery won't necessarily decorate your cake so we opted to work with our florist to add flowers on top of the cake once it was delivered to the venue. read more

I wish I had the option to give NO STARS. I just called this bakery to see if we can order a nice cake for us here at UCSF since they had nice reviews but now i regret calling them and wasted my time. The lady who picked up the phone was VERY RUDE. I asked her if I can order a cake for this thursday and what the prices were then she gave me attitude saying that she doesn't have any cake for the day but I clearly said this was for Thursday not for today. When I was about to talk again she cut me off by saying THINK WHAT YOU WANT AND CALL BACK and hangs up on me. She obviously doesn't want any business. Was moist but not as strongly poppy flavored as what you would get typically (perhaps from Sprouts, Trader Joes or Panera). Almond cookie: 4 stars. Soft like cake inside. Huge cookie. Tasted fine. Pineapple bun: 4 stars. Soft bread inside (better than Kee Wah and most chain bakeries I've recently tried), large bun, nice crumbly sweet crust. I think it's a really nice convenient place to go for a snack if you're on the go and hungry. I came around 1:30 pm on a Monday, and it was a quick, nice purchase. read more
