Been here multiple times before today but will not be going again. Was served a sticky rice chicken (loh mai gai) that had soured. I told the lady who brought it back to the kitchen. She came out shortly with some sesame balls and told me they were gifted for serving spoiled food. When I got the check I see the charge for the spoiled food. She told me the sesame balls were the replacement and since they cost more than the sticky rice chicken, we got a deal. Still had to pay for the food that was spoiled and that was not eaten. My throat's felt sore following a wild weekend of clubbing and partying for my Leo friends' birthdays, so what better way to soothe it than some nice, warm congee, especially since Karl the Fog rolled back into the neighborhood. I ordered some fish fillet congee and a youtiao on the side for a light dinner, and it was a fire combo. The youtiao was perrrrfect! Some youtiao are too crunchy, some are too soggy, and still others are too greasy, but this one was just right - the absolute goldilocks of youtiao. The fish fillet congee was pretty good. It arrived hot, so I burned my throat by eating a full spoonful too soon and resorted to dunking my youtiao in it until it cooled off. I wish the congee were a bit more savoury and aromatic, but overall, it was delicious, and I'm sure I could "spice" it up a bit more with condiments if I dined in instead. read more

Just had to go to that place after I got passed it during the Holiday Bazaar Night Market. After my eye exam, I had to quickly order Silver Needle Rice Noodles for takeout before heading home at night. She definitely asked if I would like to have a congee or at least a lesser dim sum to pair with my order. But I insisted that I had just one for takeout. Thankfully, I had a free cup of hot tea while waiting 7 to 8 minutes for my takeout order. Silver Needle Rice Noodles was my most favorite dish since I had one as a medium dim sum back in Seafood Peninsula. They're like the size of a broad rat's tail; the shape and color made to look more interesting than the thick layered chowmein I had as a kid. That's why I can't stop having so much of it until I'm satisfied. Back home, the Silver Needle Rice Noodles lacked moisture as they came off with the rolling of my tongue. Other than that, it's not too bad. Hopefully, I was expecting a veggie option for my most favorite dish; well, I take what's given to me anyway. When I look at Sun Maxim's, this Cantonese eatery was completely similar to the Maxim's Hong Kong in many different places during my last family trip overseas. Staff are fast and friendly. There are smaller tables in the entry and large tables toward the back. There's also a tv that runs a continual silent ad on the food lol. I ordered a century egg and pork congee $6.50 and a Chinese donut $3.25 thinking it might be fast. The owner tried to up sell me on her rice rolls. After waiting for over 15 minutes, I went in the back and ask her not to heat it up as this is for my breakfast tomorrow. They didn't even have the oil heated up yet. Our book club decided to visit Sun Maxim's in inner sunset given ease of access and likelihood to be seated without a long wait. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food at sun maxim's, with many of the dim sum dishes tasting as good as some of the more expensive and well-known SF options, but at probably half the cost! After a relaxing session at Facial Plus, I asked my esthetician for a nearby restaurant recommendation. She suggested Sun Maxim's, raving about the delicious food at reasonable prices. She mentioned that everything on the menu is good, but especially recommended the rice rolls, clay pot rice, and pan-fried sticky rice. Yum! My husband and I were lucky to snag the last table for two. The waitress was friendly and attentive, quickly bringing us drinks and menus. Despite the steady flow of customers, she had to turn people away, asking them to return in 30 minutes since the restaurant was at full capacity. The phone was ringing constantly with takeout orders as well. We ordered the preserved egg and pork congee (5/5), BBQ pork rice rolls (6/5), and the preserved meat and spare ribs clay pot rice (6/5)--all absolutely delicious! However, it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which I suspect was due to the place being short-staffed. Since it's a small restaurant and the weather was unusually hot, all the customers were sweating while waiting. Would I go back? Absolutely! The rice noodles are very soft, and the soy sauce is good too. Highly recommended! The mushroom chicken claypot takes around 30 minutes. I guess they not like some other restaurant, precook the rice and put it into the claypot. At the bottom, it has a lot of crust. It's very crispy! The chicken is soft and juicy. It really helps with digesting so if you get the clay pot rice it will balance out the meal. Beef cheung fun (5/5): the noodles are so silky and just holds the flavor so well. Preserved meat clay pot rice (4/5) : I like how they give a lot of meat unlike other clay pot rice spots. It does take a while to come out so make sure you order this first.
