I saw this on Reels and decided to give this place a try. I went during lunch time on a week day so it's less busy. I ordered and paid with Apple Pay -- you'd have to spend more than $10 to not get an extra fee. While I was waiting for my food, they offered me hot tea. I typically get shrimp rice roll but today the staff suggested I try their fish rice roll with congee. I can't eat that much in a single seating so I told her I'll order the fish rice roll first and then maybe the congee if I'm still hungry. The rice roll was thin, glutinous and silky. Since I came out here to get a haircut on Irving prior to Lunar New Year, we figured why not. It was a Monday around 1pm and there was only 1 other table of 2 dining in. When we left, two more tables came in around 1:45pm. We ordered: - Beef Rice Noodle ($7.99) - Shrimp Rice Noodle ($8.50) - Chinese Donut Rice Noodle ($8.25) - Sun Maxim's Congee ($6.99) Each rice noodle comes with 2 pieces on type that has the filling (whether beef, shrimp, pork, Chinese donut, etc) and then under the pieces are just plain rice noodles. The rice noodles were a decent, the filling was plenty for those pieces, though I would have preferred that they had filling for all the pieces of the rice noodle. The shrimp was crisp, the beef had lots of flavor, and the Chinese donuts were crispy. Definitely eat the Chinese donut rolls quickly, or else the Chinese donuts get soggy fairly quickly. The rice noodles were chewer that other places I've tried and did not complete fall apart when I picked it up with chopsticks. They do not put a lot of the rice noodle soy sauce on top of the dish, but they do have a bottle at the table for you to add more as you desire. The Sun Maxim's Congee was pretty good. For the price, I think it was pretty fair for the amount they give you. The bowl would definitely feed 2 to 3 people. This congee had peanuts, onions, and fish filets. If you want more onion and peanuts, you can always ask the server for more. The server tried to sell us on their dim sum, but honestly it did not sound appealing and the price did not sell me to try it. Plus, there are plenty of dim sum places nearby that is cheaper for takeout dim sum. They also tried to sell us their steam mala gow for the new year to take home. Besides the server continuously trying to sell us more of their items off the menu, we just stuck to our rice noodles and congee. I really enjoyed the rice noodle dishes and would recommend others try it if dining in this establishment. It is always better to dine in when it's hot out of the steamer. The only unfortunate part is that they are on Irving, so parking can be changing and it is metered :/ If you are lucky, you might find residential parking nearby. read more

The ambience and service seemed fairly typical for a busy "hole-in-the wall" dim sum spot. We enjoyed the shrimp rice noodle roll (my favorite of the items), pork siu mai, and the BBQ pork bun. Was walking down Irving Street solo looking for somewhere to eat for dinner and outlets because my phone was running out of battery. Service and friendliness is so warm here. I was reading the placard sign outside, and the waitress welcomed me to read the menu inside and started asking how I was doing and recommendations from the menu. This spot has the solid, classic dim sum you can find at most Chinese restaurants, and that's all I needed on this day. They had many outlets around the restaurant as well, so thankfully I was able to charge my phone fully! Here's a rundown of what I ordered: - Watercress Duck Gizzard (4/5): It's a classic. Solid amount of duck and veggies in the soup per usual. SF is always chilly, so this hit perfectly after a long cold day. - Minced Beef Clay Pot (4/5): Also always a classic. Lots of beef and very very filling. Wish I added more seasoning to it because it was otherwise fairly plain, but very yummy! I'll be sure to come back to this spot sometime if I'm in the area. This review is for the clay pot rice only. After devouring a few pineapple king butter buns next door, we needed some Cantonese comfort food on this chilly day. The classic preserved meat clay pot rice came out piping hot & was fantastic. The juices from the meat & the sweet sausage oozed into the white rice, creating wonderful aroma & flavor. The house soy sauce was light & sweet, when we poured it onto the mixture we can hear it sizzle. There was a descent layer of burned crispy rice at the bottom, this is quintessential for any legit clay pot rice. We also added extra veggie for extra $2. Went there because of the 4 stars review on Yelp. Definitely disappointed. We ordered fish fillet congee, rice roll with Chinese donut inside and siu mai. Saw the siu mai coming out of the fridge to the back to get heated up. The size of congee is very small for $6 and not much taste either. I asked whether the Chinese donut is fresh before ordering the rice roll. She said yes but it was not definitely not. It was a so so meal and expensive for the kind of food we got. I figured with the excellent reviews and typical hole in the wall shop, complete with authentic Chinese service (they grudgingly greet you without a smile and ignore you for the remainder of the time) it would be worth it. I was only half right. The siu mai was tasty but on the salty side. The haa gow skin was a little dry and the shrimp were salty. The pork buns were left out for too long and the bread was dry and hard. The filling was good but nothing to write home about.
