A lot of the bad reviews highlight the lack of cleanliness, but this isn't Nobu, it's the heart of Chinatown and I was honestly just happy to experience a real local spot while visiting San Francisco. As someone from San Diego, I've had plenty of roast duck from Convoy, but walking through Chinatown and seeing window after window of juicy roast duck made it impossible not to try it here. We walked into Kam Po Kitchen, a very small and packed shop, and were greeted and seated right away. The inside is a maze of tables and chairs, but our table was freshly wiped down. There was one woman handling both serving and running food, but despite how busy it was, she was incredibly kind and had such a good attitude. You're given two menus, one with photos of their popular dishes and another large traditional menu. It was honestly hard to choose. We saw their roasted eel clay pot rice advertised outside and knew we had to get it. We also ordered the beef chow fun, and of course the main reason we came, the roast duck. The clay pot takes about 20 minutes, which they let us know ahead of time. It wasn't an issue since we had the duck and chow fun to start. The roast duck was only $9 and a great portion. It was juicy, packed with that Chinese five spice flavor, and had tender meat with that perfect crispy skin. They put cabbage underneath which soaks up all the drippings and it was so good. The chow fun had great flavor too. The noodles were well coated in sauce and tossed with lots of green onion. I do wish there was more beef since it felt a little light, but what was there was really good. The clay pot came out looking different from the picture outside, but it still had that comforting, home-style feel. The rice had that crispy bottom layer, and there was a good amount of eel and preserved meats on top. The ginger flavor really came through and made everything super fragrant. It comes with a soy-based sauce on the side to mix in, and overall it tasted very authentic, like something my grandma would make. Overall, this place isn't about aesthetics. It's about solid, comforting food, and for that, it delivered.

I tried Kam Po Kitchen pre-COVID, and back then, their roasted pork & char siu were truly unrivaled. Returning recently, the experience was a bit more hit or miss. We ordered: * 1/2 Roast Duck & Char Siu: The char siu wasn't quite as flavorful & kind of dry. The duck had a decent taste, but it was mostly bone with very little meat * Fish Congee: This is a massive portion! Whileit was a bit watered down for my preference, it was still hearty and came with generous, large chunks of fish. * Mabo Tofu: It lacked a bit of that bold, spicy punch you expect from Mabo Tofu, but I did appreciate that it wasn't overly greasy. * Singaporean Style Chow Fun: I'd suggest skipping this one. The seasoning felt off and it lacked flavor. This is a CASH ONLY spot, so come prepared! If you need a fast, affordable, meal in Chinatown, this is the place.

Kam Po is under new management. Yes the lady with the jean shorts is still there but the owners are now a lovely couple. Lady with glasses and her husband hold the knife now. It's a mix of old school with new school. Music plays in the background of a wireless speaker and the standards mainstreamed. I been coming to this place a lot the new owners recognize me, and that's not a bad thing. Today I got a half duck for $17 and it was all meat. I am happy to see this place back in action. Reading past prior reviews its different / business practices better now with new management. Come in for the house clay pot rice that can feed two people and or the house bbq items. The cha sui lately had my family asking where I got it from. I'm blessed to be able to share food back the same way my grandparents showed me.

U P D A T E : Decided to give this place another try after a few years due to a Yelp friend mentioning the restaurant is under new management and ownership! The restaurant didn't change their decor, but the food seems to be better with some of their dishes. Same waitstaff, lady with short hair who remembers us. ***OUR PICKS*** BEEF STEW AND TENDON ~ tender and soft! Just like it used to be before Covid. So glad we tried them again. 5/5 ROASTED PORK AND BBQ PORK WITH CABBAGE AND RICE ~ the bbq pork was sliced thinner which tastes better. Roasted pork had crispy skin and juicy meat. It has a bit more fat but it's tastier and not dry. The same goes for their bbq pork. Boiled cabbage added along with steamed rice to complete the dish. 5/5 ON CHOY WITH GARLIC & SHRIMP PASTE ~ surprisingly not salty! Cooked perfectly and just the right amount of seasoning. 5/5 ROUND RICE NOODLES AND CABBAGE ~ overcooked that we had to eat it there. It wouldn't survive if we took it home to reheat. 3.5/5 WONTON NOODLE SOUP ~ wonton was a good size with shrimp in it. Noodles could have been crispier in texture. Like the rice noodles, you can't reheat again. Otherwise, it'll be a soggy mess. Blanching it in ice water would solve this. Hoping this would improve. 3.5/5 Happy that the stew and tendon is good again! We'll come back to try other things on the menu soon!

Great flavors, but serious cleanliness concerns I found Kam Pao on TikTok and decided to check it out after seeing a mix of reviews. It's a small mom-and-pop spot in Chinatown, so I went in knowing it wouldn't be fancy -- just hoping for good, flavorful food. The good: The food really was delicious. My partner had the black pepper beef over rice -- super tender and flavorful with jalapeños -- and I ordered the roasted pork belly and duck over rice. Both had crispy skin, juicy meat, and great seasoning. Prices were also very fair (under $30 total). The concern: While I was there, I noticed some hygiene issues that made me uncomfortable. I could hear frequent sneezing coming from the kitchen ,not just a couple times but several and it was hard to ignore. I did see a worker come out who looked visibly ill; his mask was pulled down below his face while he was handling cups and dishes. The other staff I saw had masks on, but a couple also had theirs pulled down. I completely understand that people get sick and still need to work, and I respect that this is a family-run space. But it made me uneasy from a cleanliness standpoint. The food was good, but once I noticed all of that, I honestly couldn't finish my meal. Bottom line: The flavor and prices are solid, but I can't overlook the hygiene concerns. If those things were addressed, I'd absolutely recommend Kam Pao but as it stands, I probably wouldn't return.

Roast Duck and Roast Pork combo, delicious!

Really good no frills Chinese restaurant. Probably the best one around the area. It's cash only, dining in can feel a little dirty and brisk, also they serve hot tea in those plastic cups which really shouldn't be used for hot scathing drinks. Parking is non existent. I'm in town for a staycation and walked here from Union Square so it was fine for me, but I don't know what I'd do if I had to drive here.

Family run and fast-service! You can see from the window where they chop up all the meats, all the other dishes are made in the back. Small eating area and limited decor. We got a roast pork/duck rice combo plate and a side of green beans. Got a soup on the house too, shoutout to our server. Keep in mind: this place is cash only!! No frills, just cheap and hearty food.

I love their BBQ meats. No frill dine-in experience, the inside is kinda smelly of cleaning products with sticky tables, but they serve some mean BBQ meats that has me coming back when I'm in the area to take home some BBQ. You can't go wrong with BBQ pork, duck, or crispy pork. Cash only.

Giant portions for a great price! Came here on a Sunday afternoon to pick up takeout for dinner. Some people were seated inside eating, and the portion sizes seem just as large in person. The staff are very efficient with taking your order, just be aware they're cash only. They cut up the meat immediately and we were out in 5 minutes. We got Pork Belly and Roast Duck over rice, which was so much food for 2 people and could have been split for 3 people. I appreciated the touch of a layer of cabbage over the rice to separate it from the meat. The Pork Belly was so crispy and Roast Duck was so juicy! All of it was so good and tender. I definitely will be back!

Metal bristles in my entree. I rinsed out to get a closer view.

My family members and I have been buying Chinese entrees from here recently due to its proximity to On Lok facility half a block away. Both my brother and I ordered entrees from here on different days and found large metal bristles, most likely from a very old wok cleaning brush, in our food!!Please see pictures. Luckily, we, and including my elderly mother, didn't end up swallowing it! Be aware, the cooks are obviously not concerned with food safety here! Additionally, as mentioned by another reviewer, if your dish is $11.80, the cashier will ask you to pay $15.00, purposely adding an extra $2 to each entree you order after taxes.

1/2 roast goose. This was $36. It tastes good but the duck is better and cheaper.

It's been a while since I last came here. I usually get a rice plate or rice noodle soup dish. This is a restaurant that also serves Chinese BBQ items. The restaurant is your typical Asian diner/eatery with kinda sticky tables and Chinese speaking staff. It's your standard 3-star, nothing fancy, local eatery serving supposedly inexpensive and filling dishes. We came here for lunch with intention to get some roast duck but kinda got sucked into the server's pace/enthusiasm on ordering. She recommended the roast goose, which only came in 1/2 or whole portions. The customer next to our table said it was good so convinced, we decided to yet it (wish we had the foresight to ask the price of it first). Then she recommends a combo plate with duck and choice of BBQ pork or roast pork. We opted for the BBQ pork. She said we are just missing a veggie dish and recommended the mustard greens. She said it's stir fried with ginger and garlic with a drizzle of Chinese wine to give it an aromatic flavor. We asked if white rice was included but she said it's for an extra charge so we decided to get fried rice instead. Food came fairly quickly and portions were decent. The goose arrived room temperatured, was meaty and decently flavorful. When the combo plate came, it was hot. The duck was very good - in my opinion it's better than the goose. Bbq pork was piping hot, lean (which I'm fine with) but the flavor is just ok and it doesn't have the honey sheen to it. I've had better bbq pork elsewhere. The mustard greens and fried rice were normal good. Biggest surprise was the bill. It came out to an eye opening, jaw dropping $85! It turns out the goose plate alone was $36! The bbq pork/duck combo plate was $18. I was expecting the bill to be in the $50s. Overall the food was fine (the duck was really good - definitely get that), but it's hard to justify 4 dishes at an Asian diner/eatery to be a hundred dollar meal (after tip). They should definitely change the dollar sign for this place to $$ at least. It's not the $ days like it was in the past/pre-covid. Cash only. Also, ALWAYS confirm the price before ordering. 3.5 stars

Neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The food reminds me of home cooking when I was a kid. The service was quick and this was a great time to come in. Normally standing room only. Ambiance is clean and the decor is older but I am here for the food!

Do they only take cash or can you use credit card and or debit card? As of 1/14/2021 are they open for dine-in, carry-out, delivery, out-door seating?

From what I know, they only take cash. They are still open for indoor dining and carry-out, but don't believe they have delivery and I know for sure they don't have outdoor dining.

Do they have a whole Peking Duck you can order? Are they open?

Hi! Love Kam Po and enjoy their dishes as well as the take out deli goodies! The yummy ducks hanging at the ready are actually roast duck, NOT Peking duck. Roast duck is cooked using flavoring -- star anise, ginger, green onion and other herbs.… Read more

Do they have a new phone number? The number listed doesn't work and you cant order online.

They are closed until early 2021 due to construction on the building.

Is Kam Po still open? I saw the shop closed and boarded up. Would be really disappointing to see this place closed down. Hope it's just temporary.

Closed for building renovations for estimated three months effective 10/5/20. Hoping to reopen 2021.

Is Kam Po open for take-out at this time (April 2020)? Are they serving in the restaurant, technically spacious enough to maintain 6 feet between patrons?

Take out only for now. Unless they are forced to close.

Is this place open Xmas day 2018?

Most of the businesses in Chinatown including Kam po are indeed open (regular hours) on Christmas day.

The walnut chicken came with halved walnuts and had a nice honey glaze to it that made it sweet but not overly sweet. For the broccoli beef, the broccoli was nicely cooked and the meat was very tender. We really enjoyed the 606 house fried rice. It wasn't overly fried like most places and felt fresh. The mixture of proteins was also tasteful. Now for the pork dumplings, the presentation was nice and also tasted great with nice hints of shrimp. We noticed the place became very busy but the service was still attentive. I recommend getting a reservation for larger parties or if you visit during peak hours. Since we had reservations, we waited only a few minutes to get seated at the bar. The bar makes it easy to converse with your partner and to peer over as the fire from the range springs up from the kitchen. Our server brought us some "Free Bites" of roasted peanuts and smashed cucumbers. She was such a pleasant lady with quite the wit that made me laugh between courses. We ordered a full bottle of Negori sake. Note: if you do not finish the sake bottle, they cannot pack it to go for you, so drink up! Obviously, we couldn't order everything on the menu. Because yes, the R&G dining area was crowded and looked much like my childhood kitchen from the '60's (yellow flowered wallpaper, white ceiling, square-tiled flooring, round metal table and chairs). Yet, the food was delicious.. We had the Prawns with Honey Walnuts, half Peking duck and my wife splurged on the Lobster with Sticky Rice. My favorite turned out to be the Prawns, large, fresh and lightly tempura-battered. The duck, and especially lobster, were messy dishes, made messier by the lack of knives, forks, crackers and mallets I'm used to preparing such dishes with. The duck was chopped, served bone-on, so fingers were necessary to pull apart the meat. Likewise, the lobster was served in pieces and I believe was meant to be cracked although the claw meat was terribly difficult, dare I say painful. to reach. If able we'd have taken the lobster home and properly broken out all the meat. Instead, we left much of the lobster on the plate. Still, a fun place. We enjoyed our meal.

When ordering the BBQ pork (char siu), I always ask for a leaner portion since I prefer it without too much fat. There wasn't much of a line this time--decades ago and even pre-pandemic, there was almost always a long wait during their busier times like during lunch and dinner hours. A relative of mine used to work here over 30 years ago, and I remember how nonstop and demanding it was. It was hardly a slow or relaxed environment. They also suggested adding mochi to my order. I passed this time, but I'll give it a try on my next visit. These days, there's a lot more competition along the Noriega corridor, which may explain the change in crowds. Still, it's nice to come back for the familiar Cantonese foods I grew up with and love.

The pig tongue, however, wasn't really her thing and didn't have much flavor. We also tried the coconut mochi ($3.80 for 3). It was pretty good, with black sesame, peanuts, and sugar inside. They also have ginger pig feet and pork belly, which we might try next time. Overall, solid spot if you're here for roasted pork!
