My mom and I shop here once in while. Today is the second day of Lunar NY, most shops were closed. Came in around 10:30am, or it would be busy like other shops. My mom and I made a quick stop before heading home to do some more prayers. We purchase a whole roasted duck and a pound & half of roasted pork. Both were fresh cooked from the oven and it was volcano hot!! The service is always nice and fast. The guys there are always accommodating with what we want and don't want. We rolled in here late to get some dinner takeout. It was around 5pm on Saturday and their duck was already sold out so we settled with charsiu and roasted pork. Everything was cooked perfectly and definitely solved my craving for roasted pork. Just a bit sad that I couldn't get the duck since my bf loves it. Seems like they change the veggie options as well since we got lotus root instead of bokchoy or other veggies in the photo. They only accept cash, Venmo or Zelle. This place straddles the line between BBQ joint and restaurant. They have the typical roast meats, but they offer multiple permutations of meal options that use the BBQ meats. More than just your boring roast meat over white rice pairing. I'm especially a fan of their noodle soup with BBQ meat. Sweet & Sour Pork w/ Chow Mein: This kinda looked like something from Panda Express, but tasted much better. The pork chunks were bigger and very firm and nicely fried. If I was a betting man, I'd even suspect they twice-fried yesterday's crispy pork belly that didn't sell. Anyway, it all tasted great with the sauce and peppers and pineapple. Pro-tip, you can substitute the chow mein with white rice, which I think goes very nicely with the pork. Unfortunately, they wasted space with some green vegetable side dish. Would have much preferred if they just put more sweet & sour pork in that slot. BBQ Pork, Roast Pork with Rice Noodle Soup: First of all, these weren't rice noodles. They were more like the egg noodle used in wonton soup. But that's actually a plus in my book since I only like rice noodles in pho. Anyway, I absolutely love the combination of noodle soup and freshly cut BBQ meats. The soup broth and all the starch of the noodles really help cut the saltiness of the meats. Much better than munching the meat by itself or with a little rice. Best of all, the last few slurps are broth are full of flavor from the meat! Roast Duck w/ Wonton Noodle Soup: Another nice pairing of roast meat and noodle soup. The duck meat portion was smaller than the pork in my other soup, partly because there were fewer pieces but also because the duck had bones. But to compensate for that, there were six large wontons. So meaty, they were like pork meatballs with a light doughy wrapper around them. It was a bit of an effort to careful pick off the meat and skin from the bones. More concentration than I usually care to spend on soup. But it still tasted nice together. Unfortunately, not edamame as was seen in the photo. read more

** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** I was kinda wondering if this Yummy was related to Yummy Bakery on Jackson, also in Chinatown. Is there a Yummy dynasty that I'm not aware of and perhaps the basis of an Aaron Spelling family soap opera about power, greed, big shoulders pads in sequin gowns, and cat fights in a public fountain. OK, maybe I grew up on too much '80's TV because this compact spot looked like a more intimate family operation with chickens and ducks hanging in the window. I was actually lured by a photo of their $10 Salted Chicken. It was as close to steamed chicken I could get since it came with garlic ginger sauce. Delicious lunch special - you can choose rice and three items or noodles and two items for $6! Are you kidding me?! 6 dollars for a meal in San Francisco. Unheard of. Instead of a business just tossing the food in the garbage they sell it at a reduced price for less of a lost than just tossing in garbage. There's usually not a whole lot to say about quickie Chinese food places, because they just fulfill your hunger or whatever Dim Sum cravings you may have. But man, I never thought I could be pleasantly surprised by some old school Cantonese-style food for under 10 bucks! For some reason, while I was in the area, I had a deep craving for some Spare Ribs with Bok Choy and Cantonese-style soup that includes the best pieces of roasted duck. Yeah, I ordered both on two different visits and they were so perfect and just brought me back to feeling like home. The counter staff here are real chill here and they speak suprisingly good English, along with Cantonese, and Mandarin. So don't be shy when you order, 'cause they'll understand you. I had a nice lady at the counter who was just the kindest. Like a long lost Aunt! But, like I said, the staff here are all chill. You can also dine here, as there are some tables for patrons. There's a lot of good bbq in Chinatown, but if you're getting budget dim sum at Dim Sum Bistro next door, you could do worse than hit this place up. I grabbed half a duck for $11, and it met my expectations. Not quite as much tea smoke as I like but they made it up with the accompanying sauces: a dark one which was actual pan juices, not soy with extra salt, and a lighter citrus-y one that made me wonder if this is what that terrible "duck sauce" at Chinese-American takeout places is trying to imitate. There's also an organic duck for $2 more per half; whole ducks are currently $20 and $23 respectively. And there are quite a few combo dishes, I notice from other reviews; I'll be back to try those. It's a pretty long trek from my office to here... but the MealPal selection was fairly lacking today so I decided I was finally going to try this place and get some beef chow fun. Walked the 10 minutes to the busy street of Broadway and picked up my order. Fairly typical Chinatown fair... roasted meats hanging by the window, trays of ready to eat items being kept warm at the counter. Items are extremely cheap, but holy hell are the portions GIGANTIC. My beef chow fun was honestly enough to feed a family of 4. It's fairly oily, but for beef chow fun that's not exactly a bad thing as when it gets dry, the noodles stick together and aren't edible. It made the item reheat really well too, but... again, oily. It tasted pretty good, not too salty, the beef was tender. Definitely would come back if I was craving cheap Chinese food. I was in Chinatown for the first time in a very, very long time the other day. As I walked to a dim sum place next door, I couldn't help but notice the duck just hanging off the rack here. I love duck, especially Chinese style roast duck. I ordered a whole duck and a pound of their BBQ pork, and I am so thankful for it. The owner told me that I would love the freshness, and when I got home, they weren't kidding. It was fresher than other Chinese supermarkets I've been to, but the real winner was the lack of grease, oil, and fat. I live in the East Bay, and it's hard to find a place like this that is Chinatown style. The only place I can find it is a supermarket, and I never liked how greasy and oily their food was. I remember when I got to the bottom of this takeout box, there weren't any pools of oil, grease, or fat. I am a huge fan of Yummy BBQ for that. They do take Venmo or cash, just so anyone who stops by knows how to pay. Maybe it's because I came after their busy hours, but the noise level was still normal, room conversation level. It's not too loud, and I like this place. I can't wait to find myself back here for my next round of duck. read more

This is the former Mon Kiang and it's pretty much the same on the inside. It's a go-to for lazy saturday take-out lunch. $3.80 for rice and 3 dishes. It's such a big packet I normally have enough for lunch and a "snack" later on. They also have dim sum and roasted meats. Out of all the cheap dim sum places that populate chinatown, they are actually one of the best. It's consistently warm and the shrimp in the siu-mai and har-gow is actually quite fresh considering it's 3 for $1.40. The real star here however is this one lady behind the counter whom I fondly regard as an adopted aunty. She never fails to make sure I have enough to eat and that I am eating well at that. I come here quite often, and usually come here to get the BBQ meat items (the best thing here). Another popular item the locals like to get is the Plain Bun if you're looking for a quick snack. And for variety I personally like to get the "3 items and 1 soup". It's incredibly affordable and tastes great! Just remember to tell them to pop it in the microwave if it happens to be late in the afternoon, because it does tend to get cold easily. My favorite (and cheapest) chinese restaurant in the city! I ate here 4-5 times a week between 2011-2012 and it really reminds me of my mom's cooking. If you didn't live in a fobby Cantonese household then you don't get it. This is the stuff you see on the travel tv shows and what the Chinatown locals eat. Don't let the dirty floor and sticky tables scare you off, take it to go and eat it at Washington square park. Their food is different everyday but you get a potpourri of wtf deliciousness. No sweet and sour chicken here. 3 items plus rice for $3.75 and the portions are huge. What I'm talking about... Not a Cantonese speaker so "lunch combination" came out to be $5.25. It comes with rice and 3 options that you can point at and nod at to choose. I chose some grilled chicken, broccoli and a fish soft tofu medley. I thought it was just tofu, but SF surprise there was fish too. Overall, I thought it was a really good value and yummy, at least on this particular day. I've been here on one other occasion and I liked this time better. 4 stars for bringing back the various porridges! For $1.50, it's a steal! Their porridge is thick and flavorful. Our favorite (my mom's too) is the salted pork with pork stomach, delicious! They also have: watercress w/ duck gizzard, salted pork w/ thousand year egg and roasted pork bone w/ peanut. Their dim sums are disappointing. First, it's not hot. We tried the chiu chow dumpling (hubby's favorite) and it was just ok. The shrimp dumpling was not good at all. The beef noodle roll is ok, not much flavor.
