Despite how often I find myself around here, I'd be lying if I had paid much attention to L H Restaurant in the past. In part, it's because I had no idea the old Five Happiness restaurant that used to call this place home had even closed, but, really, I just tend to forget about every restaurant on this block (save for Brothers Korean BBQ). That is, until we heard that they sell Chinese BBQ roast pork and roast duck here, which we're always on the lookout for! Compared to some of the other nearby Chinese restaurants, L H feels a bit bigger in size, but, outside of that, not much about it feels all that indistinguishable or notable. As for the menu, we knew we were going to be trying their Chinese BBQ, but it was nice to see that they have over 140+ dishes to choose from, even despite how it didn't seem like there was a specific signature offering or specialty. Still, with so many options available, it was nice to see just about every Chinese staple dish was accounted for and that there seemed to be something for everyone. -- THREE BBQ ITEM PLATE with Roast Pork, Roast Duck, and Char Siu The dish we came here for, but it was a mixed bag. The biggest issue for me was how everything was cool/room temp, but at least the Roast Pork wasn't bad - a touch underseasoned, but crispy-ish. The Roast Duck was also decent (albeit lean), but the Char Siu was a bit dry. -- BEEF STEW & WONTON NOODLE SOUP with Egg Noodles While the portion size was generous, nothing about this stood out. On the plus side, the wontons were fairly plump and the noodles had a nice bite to them. However, the broth wasn't very rich and several chunks of the beef stew were chewy/tough. -- TOMATO BEEF JI MIEN This didn't do much for me, but, to be fair, I'm not a big fan of the dish in general. Although it came with a generous amount of tomatoes on top, all of the sauce and everything didn't leave much crispiness to the noodles. -- BEEF WITH SCRAMBLED EGG OVER RICE I didn't have a ton of this one, but it might have been the best dish we had. Sadly, some of the rice felt a little firm, but the eggs were cooked exactly how I prefer for this dish and the slices of beef were actually surprisingly tender. Much like the food, the service here was fine, but it seems they may not be as generous as they used to be. While the workers were friendly enough, my relative, who comes here often and is the one who put this place on our radar, mentioned they no longer give free soup with their lunch plates and that the portions looked slightly smaller than he remembered. I personally can't say if that's actually the case or not, so take it for what it's worth, but I also don't have any reason to doubt him either. All in all, even though nothing about L H Restaurant, or their food, amazed us, I can't say anything specific failed us either. Rather, our visit just felt really lackluster and generic. If anything, the most notable thing about this place is how curiously early they close, even on weekends (closes at 7pm). Given all of that, I can't say we have much of a reason to come back, especially in an area like the Richmond where we really don't have to go far to find the same or better. Other than the soup, most of the stuff the hubs ordered was not very good. The egg rolls were mushy inside. Why, we couldn't figure out. It was almost like they were filled with a paste. The chow mein was also sour. We couldn't figure that out either. I don't think it was bad as in spoiled, but we did throw this away. The chow fan was fine. Just very bland. When I checked the order at the restaurant, I noticed the duck was plated rather messily in the box, but I did not consider the significance of it until I got home. The fact is, some pieces were missing. I ordered a whole duck, and just like a puzzle, you should (can) reassemble it. I suspect they combined leftover duck pieces from previous orders to make up mine so it would look "whole". That would save them from carving up a whole duck. Now, if this were a Too Good To Go order, I would understand since the idea is to minimize food waste, but this was a direct order for a full entree, so I expected a full entree. This is a sit down restaurant, but they do takeout and that's what I got. It looks like they specialize in different meats, as you can see from the reviews. But they also have a full menu that looked interesting. This is a very authentic place. I didn't see a single white person in there. That usually means service that isn't up to the standards of some diners, very affordable food, and freaking AWESOME Chinese food. For $15 I got a big plate of food that included 2 meats, rice and basic steamed cabbage. I came at noon and the place was mostly empty. The meat was pretty cold, which could mean it was yesterday's meat or it could just be how things go when you have meat hanging by the window. Either way, it was delicious. I probably wouldn't come here as a dedicated trip, there are other takeout places nearby that have a variety of vegetables to choose from. Formerly Five Happiness Restaurant, now it's a Chinese BBQ takeout & restaurant. Recently opened and newly renovated. You can do take out or eat in. We recently tried both. Firstly, the BBQ meats like roast duck, BBQ pork and Crispy roast pork are great. We also heard the roast chicken was great too but we haven't tried yet. It's also a tad less expensive than the prices on Clement St. A huge deal because of these inflation prices. Secondly, maybe they are still new and trying to find their sea legs, but their dim sum are not that great. Very thick skins and some of the dim sum tasted off. There are so many other dim sum spots on Clement that we would not recommend them for now unless you are adventurous like we were. Had good experiences doing takeout BBQ lunch plates and also gotten a whole roast duck (under $30) for visiting family, so we recommend that. Restaurant was dead at 5pm on a Sunday but it probably one of the cleaner if not the cleanest restaurant in the area. I feel like they do more catering/ take out orders than not. The only place I've had roast duck noodle soup is at Lam Hoa Thuan on Irving St. I live on 34th and Geary and don't really know where to get good roast duck noodle soup in the neighborhood. Well... Since I didn't find any payment info, I went to the bank for some cash before meeting my friend in the restaurant. It turns out you can pay by credit card if the bill is $30 or over and you pay 3% of the card transaction fee. I ordered a roast duck wonton egg noodles and shrimp dumplings. My friend ordered the veggies egg noodles with chicken feet dim sum. The wontons were pretty big. They served me six cut pieces of roast duck and two of them had only skin and no meat. The egg noodles were ok. There were lots of veggies in my noodles. The shrimp dumplings (ha gow) were pretty small and one of the shrimp was not completely deshelled. My friend liked her veggie egg noodles which she only ate half and took the other half home. She also finished the chicken feet. I personally think the roast duck and wonton noodles are better at Lam Hoa Thuan in Sunset. The service staff was fast and courteous and the restaurant seemed popular. I didn't believe in my eyes when I saw their menu because the price of the food is low compared with other places. I suggested my mom to try this place yesterday. We ordered the Pig Liver, Cheung Fun, Bitter Melon Cheung Fun, and the Three Items Choice: roasted duck, bbq pork and roasted pork. For the Cheung Fun itself is soft, but not slippery and chewy. They should put less water in it. Also, the soy sauce needs to be more sweet. The soy sauce on the table is not meant for Cheung Fun at all. The portion of the food is pretty generous. Customer service definitely failed. Three staff members working, one guy and two girls. Most of the time the guy is the one running around front and back, but the two girls just stood there, day dreaming. Only tried their BBQ stuff & was very pleasantly surprised. I ordered their Fat Chasiu (as told to me by the cashier), the roasted pork belly (siuyok), & their roast duck. Very good Chinese BBQ style roasted items, paricularly the roasted pork, duck and ribs. The skin of the roasted pork is so crispy and the meat is not salty and overspiced like In other BBQ places. The rolled noodles (cheung fun) are great too, especially the ones with cilantro. They are very generous with the quanity of cilantro rolled in the rolled noodles. The ones with pork and beef are great too. My family tried their Singapore noodles and stir-fried ho funs with beef and they are awesome. Dim-sums are not that great, guess that they order the dim-sums somewhere and reheat to serve. Ordered a bowl of noodle soup with cha siu and wontons. The wontons are too big and just pork with no shrimps in filling. They are not typical wontons. cha siu tasted a bit sweet but not honey-glazed. And the soup is plain in taste.
