I ordered general tso chicken, white rice, and mixed veggies. It was ok. The experience was better than the food. The service was ok. Nothing special. I won't be going back. Wish I could get a full refund.
Wenchang is my favorite Chinese restaurant ever. I don't live in San Francisco but sometimes we drive there just to eat wenchang. I've brought relatives here to eat the best Chinese food and they all say it's the best aswell. Fair warning that they only take cash and the parking can be sparse but always been worth it. The service is always amazing and it has such a cute mom and pops shop vibe. 5/5 recommendation you must try their most popular crispy honey chicken, fried rice, four seasons chow mein, and walnut prawns. 5/5
So I was hanging with my friend, and he knows all the good spots in the Richmond. We both love dumplings, so he suggested we grab a quick bite for lunch at WenChang since we were nearby. Filling, fast, and good is how I'd sum it up! We came to the restaurant at opening on a weekday. It was virtually empty. The establishment is on the smaller end, super casual, and has little decor and art here and there. The service was fast and efficient. In terms of paying, you can either pay in cash or pay through their menu's QR code with a card. We ordered the Crab Cheese Puffs, Xiao Long Bao Soup Dumplings, and Shu Mai Pork and Shrimp Dumplings. I had both dumplings and they were good. Decent size for the price. I wish the soup for the xiao long bao were hotter and more plentiful but it was overall fine. This is a good neighborhood spot for affordable dumplings. Richmond has plenty of great dumpling spots, WenChang Dumpling Restaurant is convenient if you're nearby. I wouldn't go out of my way for it. It's easy to find on the corner of Balboa St. with residential parking around.
Deep in the heart of a residential neighborhood on a quiet corner in the Richmond District, we were drawn by Yelpers promoting WenChang's crispy honey sesame chicken. It's one of my son's favorite dishes to eat. It. Is. Sensational! Ask for it a little spicy (it's lightly so). Unlike most places, it's alllll chicken, not a bit of chicken in mostly deep fried coating. These are thiccccc pieces of juicy all-breast meat in a crunchy, crispy, light batter piled high over an irresistible, sticky sauce. Honey walnut prawns were hot and crunchy with a lemony sauce, not as rich a dish as some restaurants serve; it let the shrimp shine. The D.I.Y. Moo Shu wraps were savory and delicious with a heaping plate of wok hei flavor with cabbage/mushrooms/carrots/ginger and egg and a plate of steamed wrappers. You can add steak, shrimp or extra egg. XLB were good although I'm not sure they make them there. They were hot and soupy. It's a tiny place, there's only seating for about 15 people. Husband and wife do the cooking and service; it's a warm and tidy place, very homey. My only suggestion for improvement would be to list the current prices on the online menu and handwritten receipt. I understand a small mom & pop and rising food prices make it difficult to update their menu but I do like to see what I'm paying for. It was so good we rushed back to have dinner after we had lunch earlier today. I don't think we've ever done that. Lots of regulars seem to populate this busy spot. One meal and you'll become a regular too! PS Cash only. In a pinch, you can work-around by ordering online and paying by credit card if you're short on cash.

I was craving some dim sum after finishing a 10k race, and we found this place! The restaurant is a bit small and only has 4-5 tables. We ordered their siu mai, xian long bao, and sweet and sour chicken based on the reviews on Yelp. I highly recommend ordering their siu mai; it was packed with flavor and filling, and it was just delicious by itself. For me, I don't have to dip it into any sauce, and it tastes great already. But the xiao long bao was a bit disappointing. The skin was too thick, and there was only a little bit of soup inside, and they didn't even provide any ginger to pair with it. Maybe it's because my baseline standard for xiao long bao is Din Tai Fung (?), so I ended up disappointed. It's my first time trying sweet and sour chicken dish, I would say the chicken was tender and juicy, and the sugar coating makes it have a good crispy exterior.

We visited WenChang on a Sunday morning. This restaurant is quite small, so there were only 3-4 two tops and one larger table, and fortunately there was an available table. We actually chose this place because we were craving dim sum, so we ordered the xiao long bao and siu mai, and also ordered the honey sweet and sour chicken. siu mai 4.5/5 - I was pleasantly surprised by the siu mai. The size of it was smaller but the filling with the shrimp was actually quite a triumph xiao long bao 3/5 - was a bit disappointed with the XLB - given that this is supposed to be the main dish of the restaurant, the skin was a little too thick. Soup in the XLB was alright. Also weirdly, we were not served ginger with the XLB sweet and sour chicken 4/5 - nice and crispy exterior, chicken was tender and juicy
This smells amazing before you even walk in. It's a small establishment but we got lucky and sat right away. Hands down some of the best Chinese food we've had.
Place is quite small but cozy. Note that it has a sign that says cash only, but you can order via QR code on their website and pay with card that way. I think the prices are a bit higher though compared to what is listed on the physical menu. We ordered soup dumplings, steamed dumplings, and string bean chicken. The dumplings overall were decent, but my friend thought the string bean chicken was a bit on the saltier side.
First visit, thanks Yelpers. This place is the real deal, Chinese-owned and good. We had shrimp dumplings (8 to an order, solid but not huge), chicken wings (banquet style, good but no added flavor), and Honey Walnut Prawns (light breading like I like it, served in a pile with walnuts on the side and nothing else). It's sad that Chinese food is getting pricey and no longer the kind of cheap eats they used to be ($53 for all this, including tip), but they do have lunch specials for under $15. I'm pretty sure many of their dishes are worth trying. As another reviewer said, it's cash only, but you can order and pay off a QR code with a card, even if you do it AFTER you eat.
I spent $32, and was really disappointed. It's ordering online and wait to be seated but I think they are primarily take out?? Usually they give 3 bao, and only 2, and SMALL ! Chix wings nothing special! Shui Mai tasted ok, but small ! They only gave us a fork, didn't ask if we wanted tea. Maybe the entree size items are better, we may have ordered the wrong items, it sure felt that way ! ! Dont get dim sum here !

Delicious Chinese food, friendly staff, big portions, cozy small homey restaurant Went 25 minutes before closing with my friend and the staff was kindly willing to seat us as long as we ordered quick Ordered the chao he fen, beef with broccoli and xiao long bao. All were fantastic. We could've ordered just the noodles and it would've been enough for us two. Noodles were one of the better he fen I've tried in sf! Solid American Chinese food, generous portions and lots of good veggies. Their hot and sour soup is one of the best ones I've had, and their sesame chicken is so crispy and juicy in-person. Overall - 10/10 food, so glad this is in my hood. read more

This place was good! My husband and i stumbled upon this spot while parking near by. We decided to try it and had a few great dishes! The chicken dish is their speciality and it was a good siza portion. Actually all the dishes were. I recommend tring WenChang! read more
This place is cash only, which is something to keep in mind before visiting. My friend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately in a space with less than 30 seats. The spacing is limited, which felt even more small due to the random shu mai around my seat on the ground. We ordered the Bistro Fried Rice with Beef, XLB, and Shu Mai. The seasoning for the Fried Rice was good. The Shu Mai seemed like it had more artificial coloring, and the XLB had the right dumpling texture with the right amount of soup. We didn't wait too long for the food either, and it was worth the minimal wait on a warm day. We would love to visit this place again and try their other dishes next time! read more
This is a family run restaurant with little seating in the Richmond, we loved this place and have been back for a second serving of XLB already! The service is great and they're very friendly. XLBs all had the skin intact and hot broth inside, with well marinated stuffing, the mapo tofu was the right amount of spicy, and the sesame chicken were so crispy and juicy. The fried spicy chicken and crab cheese puffs were okay, nothing exceptional. We wouldn't hesitate to come back and try more things! But we'd be sure to order the XLB every time. read more
tl;dr -- 3/5 for XLB but 4/5 for the value; where are you going to find 10 XLBs for 10.95? Also note, this restaurant is CASH ONLY. I stopped by WenChang for lunch this past Thursday since I was craving soup dumplings. There were a couple others picking up to-go orders, but no other person was dining in. The interior is a bit cramped with only a few tables. 'XIAO LONG BAO' SOUP DUMPLINGS - 10.95 I'm used to each order coming with 6 XLBs, but this one came with 10. Wow. Overall, the soup dumplings were just OK. It didn't taste that fresh and there was a lack of broth in each one. But I can't complain too much if the price is such a steal and there's not really good XLBs near where I live. WenChang is convenient if you're craving soup dumplings near Inner Richmond. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way for them. read more

Passed by so many times but never try until this evening. This was my first and last visit. The food: - Mushroom mapo tofu: looked great with a lot of cliantro on top. Luckily, our family love cliantro. Seemed to taste good, hot and spicy but the aftertaste was sweet and the gravy was so thick, used too much cornstarch. - Fried chicken wings: very disappointed, the wings were so tiny. The plate was not a normal size serving plate but like a saucer for teacup. There were 8 small tiny wings, kind of plain in taste. For $10 a plate, no no no. - Singapore style rice noodles: definitely not authentic - no shrimps, no chasiu, not sufficient curry flavor, couldn't recall if there was scrambled eggs, possibly not much if there was. Taste-wise, this dish was not bad. - Four season chow mien: all veggies, the best dish that night but it was hell of salty. In fact, every dish was salty except the wings. Price-wise, I understand ingredients are expensive now but the quantity and quality need to be reasonable. My husband and my kids drank so much water that night. I knew and I could tell that there was a lot of msg in the food. Maybe I should have ordered the dumplings instead. Anyway, we will continue our food venture elsewhere. Parking is suck in that neighborhood and that's why we always passed by and never tried this restaurant before. "Luckily and unluckily", there was a parking space right outside and we decided to try something new. read more
5 stars for the honey sesame chicken alone! This place is a hole in the wall...tiny space far removed from the hustle and bustle. I certainly wouldn't recommend going with a big crowd as the dining room seemed to seat only about 20 people max. We chose to pick up our food to go and even after a 20 minute drive, the food was piping hot and the chicken was still crispy. We ordered the Mongolian beef, which comes in 3 heat levels. The medium was pretty spicy, and that's coming from someone who puts sriracha on everything so beware of the hot one! The chow fun noodles were bouncy with the right amount of chew and the xiao long bao were decent but not very broth. Ordering online the food was ready in 29 minutes and no line to pick up. I did notice a cash only sign for dine in so come prepared. And order the honey sesame chicken! read more
Everybody have fun tonight, everybody WenChang tonight! A friend recommended this place to me when I asked about a lunch spot to take my dad in the Richmond district so I came on a Sunday for lunch at 1pm along with my son. This corner restaurant is small and probably fits around 20 people max at most. There was a big party of 10 people ahead of us but luckily we were able to get seated within 10 minutes at a small table. The service was ok since it looked like there was only 1 lady working the front area. She took our order and within 10-15 mins our first dish came out. Lots of people seemed to be ordering the same dishes that we had which were: Crispy honey sesame chicken (my fave dish even though it was a bit sweet but the balance of the crunch with the sauce was perfect) Xiao long bao (I've had better but these were still very good) Chow fun (the rice noodles were a perfect texture and it was not too greasy or saturated with soy sauce) I would order all of these dishes again and highly recommend this place. This is a small casual restaurant. Basic and nothing thrilling. Unfortunately, there is no parklet to enjoy the food outdoors, but 2 small tables set up against the windows of this location. However the food does not disappoint. Honey sesame chicken 10/10. Mild-medium spicy with plenty of viscous sauce. It has a very crunchy but lightly battered outer layer and tender chicken meat. Very well done with a large portion enough for 3-4! Xiao long bao 9/10 with a perfect outer skin that won't break apart but isn't doughy. Not very soupy and with a light broth to it. read more

Usually order their sesame chicken to go but decided to dine in today and try their other items. Came around 1:30pm for lunch. Place is very small so not great for big groups. They had about 2 4 seat tables and 3 2 seat tables. Their sesame chicken always slaps. Their chow fun was pretty greasy but as expected from ho fun noodles. There was more chicken than noodles which is debatable whether that's good or not. The basil eggplant is really flavorful if you're a hoisin sauce lover. WenChang is a winner. I was staying a couple blocks away and stumbled upon this nondescript neighborhood eatery, and I'm so glad I did. The food and prices were great. The crispy honey sesame chicken was a treat. I'm not a big fan of sweet dishes, but this plate was loaded with nice pieces of chicken, fried to perfection with the perfect mixture of sweetness and sesame. The soup dumplings are another must-try dish--savory and juicy. The vegetable chow mein was fresh and not overly cooked. They have two prices for many entrees: cash and credit card. So make sure to bring cash for the best prices. read more
