Came here thinking it was Hunan Restaurant now is Thaishan, I used to eat at Hunan as child; so I'm not sure if is new owners or the same , the menu change from what I remember , before you could order as a group and they had packages with different food item selections. Bobo was our waitress she was very nice and gave a us marker to mark the food we were Ordering, prices were extremely reasonable specially for SF, portions were good size and everything was fresh and tasty. There's parking in the street but let's be honest is SF. There's a public parking down the street however pay attention because they want you to pay with your phone as soon as you park however there's no reception and they issue tickets...

Food was amazing and it was a nice relaxing place. My friend and I were being spontaneous and wanted to try a local food place and this was it and the food was amazing and we had our bellies full. Authentic

Imagine my shock to discover that Hunan Home's on Jackson closed for good. Say what? Now where the hell am I going for a full steamed chicken? It was my go-to comfort food in Chinatown even though I sometimes competed with busloads of tourists who swarmed the restaurant. Alas, only the overhead sign remains, and it has now become a Taishan-style restaurant named rather generically Taishan Restaurant. I was unaware that their signature dish was the $29 Taishan Roasted Chicken, which looked appetizing from what I saw on Instagram videos. Regardless, I just wasn't in the mood for a whole chicken which was their only serving option. Instead, I went for the $18 Steamed Pork Belly with Shrimp Sauce. I was expecting something lighter than what looked like a wok-fried creation with black bean sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/Nui1k4aMki). The pork belly itself was tasty in its uniquely fatty way. I had also ordered the $6.25 BBQ Pork Noodle Roll but was informed rather late that none was ready to be prepared. I quickly decided to get the $6.25 Steamed Pork Ribs with Tempeh. I'm not sure where the tempeh went, but the ribs were chopped up, immersed in broth. and served up as dim sum (photo: https://yelp.to/e6K32QLUTQ). It was fine though shame on me for ordering two similar pork dishes. FOOD - 3 stars...execution was not quite what I was expecting though the quality of pork was good AMBIANCE - 3 stars...still looks like Hunan Home's but unfinished SERVICE - 4 stars...the server was trying the best she could TOTAL - 3 stars...still newish...I'll probably come back and try the roast chicken RELATED - Exploring Chinatown? Came here bc mark & chenle came here (lol) but overall gives very homey, good chinese food vibes. Service is quick & they are very well known for their claypot rice offerings. The egg yolk custard buns were also a favorite of ours

Taishan restaurant is situated on Jackson street where Hunan Homes used to be (between Kearny and Grant). The decor did not change much, actually felt more won down even. Food was all decent and very reasonably priced. Service was attentive as there were not a lot of folks there when we went that day. In the private room below, there was a crazy huge screen available for karaoke. On the side was a Mahjong table. We didn't use it, so uncertain if it was functional. Overall high value, good food. I recommend the black pepper pork stomach soup, eel crispy rice.

The vibes reminded me of Asia with a whole table of 8-10 uncles bantering loudly with occasional cigarette breaks right outside of the restaurant. There was only one waitress running the whole dining area (props to her) so service was a bit slow but understandable. Food was up to standard and will come back again to try their other dishes for lunch and dinner. Overall the experience was not as pleasant as I wish but it's all for the vibes so I'll give it another chance!

Curried beef brisket over crispy noodles and Bok choy

We were driving back from north bay and decided to stop here for a late dinner. They have an extensive menu and even dim sum! The 4 of us ordered garlic string beans, curried beef brisket and bok choy over crispy noodles, lamb stew and rice, and a beef chow fun. It was shared family style on a lazy susan. Garlic string beans - good texture and flavor. 5/5 Curried beef brisket and bok choy over crispy noodles - the noodles were packed instant noodles, sauce kinda thick. Beef and flavor was ok. 3/5 Beef chow fun - not very flavorful. Noodles tasted old. This dish wasn't good. 1/5 Lamb stew - good 5 spice flavor and not gamey. More rice than stew. 4/5 Maybe we didn't order the right dishes? Some were hit and miss. Dim sum could be better? In any case, they're open late and some things were ok. Now that I read some reviews, were we charged tip with our meal and paid tip again? Businesses who practice this should tell customers so they know! Definitely will rethink coming back if at all.

    Clay pot eel rice
    Grace Z.

I came here with my parents for lunch and there's lot of open seating. My parents wanted to come here since they missed the eel clay pot rice they grew up eating in China. Even at 12pm there were only 2 other tables that were occupied. They have a large selection on the menu with many chefs and house special dishes. They also serve dim sum here if you're not sure what type of Chinese food you want. Yellow Eel Clay Pot Rice (4.5/5) - the rice was well made, and the crispy rice from the bottom of the pot made for great contrast in texture! It's very close to traditional yellow eel clay pot rice that you can find in China! Steamed White Eel with Black Bean Sauce (5/5) - best dish of the meal! The eel was the perfect texture, slightly crunchy (in a good way) and not mushy. Flavors were bold and nostalgic! Taishan Five Flavor Goose (3.5/5) - the flavors were great but the goose itself wasn't great quality (most likely can't compare to what you find in China) Green String Beans (5/5) - they were just right! Well seasoned in a garlicky stir fry, crispy and light. If you are in the area and looking for authentic Chinese eel or clay pot dishes, you should check out Taishan Restaurant! Fun Fact: They have a karaoke room in the back!

    Menu

My son and I wanted to try something new, so we decided to dine at Taishan Restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown. We ordered the yellow eel clay pot rice, sautéed string beans, and braised beef stew. The yellow eel clay pot rice and sautéed string beans were both delicious--perfectly seasoned, not overly salty, and generous in portion for the price. I was pleasantly surprised that the eel had no fishy odor at all, and every grain of rice was full of flavor. We couldn't stop eating it! It was well worth the $49 for the dish. The braised beef stew was just okay in comparison, but the overall experience was great. The service was friendly, and the restaurant was clean. I'd definitely come back for the clay pot rice again!

pork pan fried baos, beef noodle rolls
    Samantha O.

I came here pretty late, half an hour before they were closing and they were super kind to me and welcomed me as if I was at home. They gave me their recommendations as well and I tried something new/different from what I would normally order. The pan fried baos were super yummy and the noodle rolls had a nice chew to them.

Everyone who grew up in or around Chinatown knows that the majority of the Cantonese population here hails from Taishan, a district in Guangzhou province. It only makes sense that this would be the dominant cuisine style here. The most popular and oldest one is on Broadway, known to locals for closing late, as in the next day early mornings. There are no less than four now in Chinatown alone and some in other neighborhoods now. I tried dining here but learned that they are closed Wednesdays. I came here on a Tuesday a little after noon to find two tables occupied (parties of 2 and 4 respectively). Another gentleman waited at a back table for a takeout order. There was only one lady manning the cashier and dining room. After waiting a few minutes for her, I walked back towards the entrance and seated myself. She brought a glossy one-sheet menu (2-sided). Being slightly familiar with the menu, I wanted to try two things, a dim sum item and a claypot rice. In reading the menu, there were only two rice options and they were sized for family style. I pivoted and started with the Taishan shrimp noodle roll (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=IX00TdYyXlgpNHQ88Jd2wg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); I was surprised by a. the noodle choice (a wrinkly version, likely house made, b. the size shrimp (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ukLRoM5nYmO-6_rUL-3pNQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) more akin to prawns, and c. portions which were generous as I only finished 1/3rd of it. It was tasty but a bit difficult to eat. At the lady's suggestion, I also tried the braised beef stew over rice (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=EmcKV13MJud2SS5kZSTyqA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); again, the portions were generous with a mix of beef stew, tendons, and 'mystery' pieces on a bed of cooked Napa cabbage. The flavors were good on the sauce and it wasn't overly thick. Here's what was left on my plate (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Ct-3EHOrpeZS7Fk9tdcssg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), an overly generous portion of rice and a large inedible piece of protein. I was impressed with the tea, giving me a large teapot. As the other diners left, both parties with takeout boxes, two pairs of diners entered and dined as I prepared to leave. I noticed that every table had an induction heating unit, used for hot pot meals which were listed on the menu. I had to flag the lady for my bill as she took phone orders and tended to the other customers. The food was okay taste and quality wise but one may bump this up for the food quantity. Not sure if I'll be back unless it's with friends or relatives to try one of those claypot rice dishes. *** For me, this location will always remind me of good memories for family and church group meals when it was Sun Tai Sam Yuen in the '60's and '70's and later Hunan Homes from the '80's till a few years ago. The Hunan Homes sign is still up.

Amazing food. A sleepy hole in the wall place, run by a family. I got the green beans, orange chicken, and noodles. All great. Such large portion sizes too. Will be returning.

Everything we ordered was very good and tasty (see rating in each photo). Our lady server gave great recommendations and provided fast and friendly service. We will definitely come back to try Chef's Specials and other dishes on the menu.

Now let's talk about the food!! For dinner, we ordered the honey walnut chicken, broccoli beef, 606 house fried rice, and the pork dumplings. The walnut chicken came with halved walnuts and had a nice honey glaze to it that made it sweet but not overly sweet. For the broccoli beef, the broccoli was nicely cooked and the meat was very tender. We really enjoyed the 606 house fried rice. It wasn't overly fried like most places and felt fresh. The mixture of proteins was also tasteful. Now for the pork dumplings, the presentation was nice and also tasted great with nice hints of shrimp. We noticed the place became very busy but the service was still attentive. I recommend getting a reservation for larger parties or if you visit during peak hours. We aren't local or else this would be a regular place for us.

"Everything!" That's all one needs to say. At the entrance, clearly marked are signs reading, "Reservations" and "Walk-ins". Since we had reservations, we waited only a few minutes to get seated at the bar. The bar makes it easy to converse with your partner and to peer over as the fire from the range springs up from the kitchen. Our server brought us some "Free Bites" of roasted peanuts and smashed cucumbers. She was such a pleasant lady with quite the wit that made me laugh between courses. We ordered a full bottle of Negori sake. Note: if you do not finish the sake bottle, they cannot pack it to go for you, so drink up! Obviously, we couldn't order everything on the menu. For our first visit, we definitely wanted their special dish, Fried Squab. It was delicious! The meat was moist and the dipping salt with Sichuan peppercorn paired perfectly! Just don't focus too much on the visual... the head and claws. Hot Mustard Jellyfish Salad ~ I loved the "crunch" of the jellyfish and the hot mustard marinade was just spicy enough to start a slow burn up the nose. Beef Chow Fun Noodles ~ Delicious and so very savory. I was amazed at how flavorful this dish was without being salty. Clay Pot Rice w/Chinese Sausage & Bacon ~ Loved how the entire pot was seasoned nicely. The sauce did not only sit at the top, but penetrated deep down into the rice. XO Escargot w/Milkbread ~ I've only had French Escargot and these are just as good, if not better! Fish Fragrant Eggplant ~ Another savory and very umami dish. Red Bean Shaved Ice ~ Always a refreshing dessert. Dig in for the surprise in the center. We had such a nice, cozy dinner here. Even while at the bar, we never felt for lack of space. They paced the dishes out perfectly, so there was always room to eat and enjoy. Looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu.

The duck was chopped, served bone-on, so fingers were necessary to pull apart the meat. Likewise, the lobster was served in pieces and I believe was meant to be cracked although the claw meat was terribly difficult, dare I say painful. to reach. If able we'd have taken the lobster home and properly broken out all the meat. Instead, we left much of the lobster on the plate. Still, a fun place. We enjoyed our meal.

We came on Thursday and got the roasted pork and pig tongue. My mom really liked the roasted pork,…read morethe skin was crispy and the meat was super tender. The pig tongue, however, wasn't really her thing and didn't have much flavor. We also tried the coconut mochi ($3.80 for 3). It was pretty good, with black sesame, peanuts, and sugar inside. They also have ginger pig feet and pork belly, which we might try next time. Overall, solid spot if you're here for roasted pork!

We ordered : - Braised beef wonton noodle soup : noodles had that perfect springy bite, the broth was light , well seasoned & comforting. The braised beef was melt in your mouth tender, and the wontons were fresh, plump, and juicy. Everything was on point. - Fish porridge : I appreciate that the congee is not too soupy/ watered down. It was hearty and fish was delicately cooked just right, not dry or rubbery like some places. - Curry fish balls with pork rind : Good side dish, nicely seasoned with a spicy kick which we loved. Parking was relatively easy, there's metered spots across the street. Service was fast & efficient, the aunty who served us was super friendly and on top of everything. The interior is clean and comfy with a chill, welcoming vibe. Definitely planning to return, especially for another bowl of that beef noodle soup!

Went here with my girlfriends to celebrate a wonderful dim sum dinner for AAPI month! We had heard about this place because it is a Michelin recognized restaurant and while we live closer to Chinatown figured it was worth heading down to SOMA. It was good, but like similar reviews say, pretty shocked with how comparable it tasted to some other dim sum places in the city. Imperial Peking Duck - 10/10! XLB - 11/10 just for the presentation! The waiter serves you the first one :) House Pan Fried noodles - 8/10, not the best but still tasty. We also had the egg cake for dessert and we've never had that before so it was nice to try something new. Would come back if I was in the area but since I'm close to Chinatown, can find places there too.
